Schmoll joins Lo Duca & Milledge
2008-04-17 02:20:00 Steve Schmoll came to the Mets in the Duaner Sanchez trade, prior to the 2006 season Omar sent Jae Seo to the Dodgers for Sanchez and Schmoll. Seo was subsequently traded to the Rays for Mark Hendrickson and then ended up pitching over seas. When Schmoll came over he was much less accomplished then Sanchez but did have some experience in the majors with Los Angeles (2005- 48gms/ 5. 01 ERA). I never understood why Schmoll didn't a chance at the end of the season but while he served for two years as the Zephyrs closer and late inning reliever, he never did come up. Schmoll had drastically changed his delivery from a 3/4 Laredo style to a full submariner like Chad Bradford, it resulted in his ERA going from 4.69 in 2006 to 3.76 last year. At the end of spring (this year) Schmoll was released by the Mets and Mack Attack is reporting that the Nationals have signed Schmoll. The Washington Nationals signed RHP Steve Schmoll. Milledge Goes Deep In Win
2008-04-01 08:28:00 Lastings Milledge hit his first homerun of the season, as the National improved to 2-0 behind 11 runs on 12 hits. Milledge was sent to Washington from the Mets this season for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider. One to play with a chip on his shoulder, Milledge is expected to offer immediate dividends for the Nationals. 20-25 homeruns with 20-30 steals is certainly realistic for the player who is known...

Fake Teams On Fantasy Focus With Jeff Erickson - Lastings Milledge, Nick Jo
2008-03-11 15:51:00 Update [2008-3-11 13:22:17 by Eric Hz]: Thank you to Jeff Erickason for having me on. I enjoyed the chance to talk baseball with one of the Kings of Fantasy Baseball. We spoke about the potential of Lastings Milledge along with 1B Nick Johnson as a serious sleeper in 2008. Look back at his 2006 season. He walked 110 times! I am not worried about the broken leg. After all, Jeff Kent has seemd to surive his well enough, hasn't he? Both Upton brothers were discussed. I like both very much and have drafted accordingly, but never at prices I considered a reach. FWIW, my Bluetooth went on the fritz for the first time! Figures. I am scheduled to be a guest on XM Radio's "Fantasy Focus With Jeff Erickson" on Channel 175 during the second segment ~ 12:25 PM. I'll provide an update later with what we spoke about for those who can't tune in. I will be following Steve Moyer. Here is the schedule courtesy of Jeff Erickson's Rotowire blog.

Milledge takes shots at Mets
2008-02-28 14:24:00 From high-fiving fans, to showboating after meaningless home runs, to arriving late at the ballpark more than a few times, Lastings Milledge certainly stirred things up during his brief stay with the New York Mets. And while he's with the Nationals now, he still can't seem to avoid creating controversy where the Mets are concerned according to the New York Daily News. The talented yet troubled outfielder sent a few shots from Nationals camp in Viera, Fla., to his old friends in Port St. Lucie this week. "I can't go through anything worse than I went through in New York. It only gets better from here," Milledge told SI.com. "A lot of veterans (on the Mets) didn't like the way I play the game. They thought I didn't respect it."

Nationals? Milledge has no regrets about time with Mets (AP)
2008-02-22 00:08:00 Give Lastings Milledge credit for honesty. The Washington Nationals outfielder did not let out one phony “I’m sorry” or a fake “I’ve changed” while speaking Thursday about his occasionally rocky time with the New York Mets. “If I had to do it all over again, I’d do it the same way that I did it. ...

Lastings Milledge or Takashi Saito?
2008-02-11 13:47:00 USATODAY.com Chat Transcript: "Port Chester, NY: Salaries things being equal, who would you rather have in an NL-only 4x4 league for the next two seasons, Lastings Milledge or Takashi Saito? For just 2008?Steve Gardner: It's easy to overlook the fact that Saito turns 38 this week because he's only been in MLB for a couple seasons. I'd take my chances with Milledge over the next two seasons, but with the adjustment period he'll have in Washington (and the lack of a definite starting spot) I'd go with Saito for this season only. The Dodgers could be ready to turn the closer job over to Jonathan Broxton or Jonathan Meloan in 2009."

The Milledge Trade Looks Worse Today
2007-12-06 18:58:00 If you haven't heard there's news from the winter meeting that the Tigers and Mets are talking about a possible trade that would send Dontrelle Willis to the Mets. What's the catch? Well, the catch is the Tigers have found themselves with a payroll overload and need to cut back so any deal involving Dontrelle would also include taking Pudge Rodriguez and his +$13MM salary. Now Pudge has a no trade clause, but would waive it if he was offered a contract extension from a playoff team (i.e. New York Mets). So how does this make the Milledge trade any worse? Well we now have an overload at catcher so for this deal to happen we'd either a) have to cut one of our existing catchers under contract b) find a way to package one of them in a deal for Willis/Rodriguez. The problem with option B is we just signed Castro to a contract and just traded for Schneider and are stuck with his contract. This is not about Ryan Church. Church will bat .270 for us and knock in 60 RBIs. This is about gett...

This is what I didn't understand about the Milledge trade
2007-12-04 22:26:00 No, this isn't another bash the Milledge trade post, the more I've thought about it, the more I'm OK with it. If Church stays we now have the left handed outfielder we need to replace Green and he is an up-grade over Green. Omar wanted a defensive catcher and he got him, if Schnieder improves the present staff then he might be the equivalent of a pitching up-grade. But why didn't Omar get a reliever out of the trade, I know it would have cost a lower level prospect or two but we need pitching. In the last two days the Nats have traded one reliever and another is being shopped. I'm not talking about Cordero but Rauch and Albaladejo would have been nice pick-ups.......The Washington Post is reporting that the Yankees have traded RHP Tyler Clippard to the Nationals for right-handed reliever Jonathan Albaladejo. He’s a big (6-5, 250) guy who made his debut in September and had a 1.88 ERA in 14.1 innings. Albaladejo is 25.I called the Yankees to try and confirm this and have yet to...

They said Jones was discussed if Milledge was moved...
2007-12-01 05:06:00 Yahoo Sports stated last week that the Mets had discussed Andruw Jones in case Milledge was moved in a trade, at the time it was presumed for a pitcher. Most teams have five outfielders and that would be about as deep as you can get in an outfield: Alou, Beltran, Church, Chavez and Jones. After a horrible year Jones might want to take a one year deal in a large market to raise his value and then try the market again. I have no doubt that Jones will rebound form last years performance........Finally Yahoo sports reports that the Mets have internally considered Andruw Jones for right field in the event that Milledge is traded. I say sign him now and figure it out later, much in the same way the Angels have done with Hunter. Jones is one of the best fielders in the league and offensively I believe he will rebound. You have to take into consideration he was a 19 y/o when he came up with the Braves, has been with them his entire career and then they laugh at his agents contract proposal ...

Was Milledge a precursor move
2007-12-01 04:06:00 I'm still having a hard time grasping this trade on it's own validity. I know the team desperately wanted to move Milledge, as I said earlier in the day they are systematically moving the players they believed contributed to the collapse. I also understand that Omar wanted what he calls a defensive catcher who calls a good game and the team needed a left handed outfielder. But all we've heard is that pitching is the top priority and that the team is keeping all it's chips to make a pitching trade. Then the first major trade they make is for a catcher and outfielder, and the player with the most potential up-side is the one leaving. This was a trade on the surface that didn't need to be made and especially didn't need to be made now. I mean, I have a hard time believing they couldn't get a set-up man for him. Even in this deal it would have made alot more sense if the trade was Schneider and Rauch for Milledge. Unless this trade is a precursor to another move.........4. The Me...

Trade: Milledge for Church & Schneider
2007-11-30 21:07:00 When I heard on the WFAN today that the Mets were close to announcing a trade, after last night's posts I'm sure you know I was saying finally some movement. Then I heard the deal was Milledge for Church and Schneider, so as I sat in shock and waited to hear the rest, because there must be a reliever involved or some unknown starter from the minors. But as it turns out the trade is strictly the three players. I will say just to start, I ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS TRADE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm not a huge Milledge fan, in fact for most of the 2006 season I plead with the organization (through this site and on forums) to trade Milledge. I would have done Heilman and Milledge for Zito in a minute back when it was a popular rumor. Milledge is an adventure in the outfield despite having a great arm and speed. At the plate he has power but hasn't learned to hit off speed stuff or lay off it, which makes him a high strike out risk. But he's an exciting, 22 y/o outfielder who has a potentially hig...

Mr. Milledge Goes to Washington
2007-11-30 19:41:00 This was not the trade we've been waiting for and it perplexes me more than interests me. Today the Mets sent Lastings Milledge to their divisional rival, the Washington Nationals, for C Brian Schneider and OF Ryan Church. Why? Who knows. And please somebody explain it to me if you do know. Now the Mets will have 3 catchers on their roster in Schneider, Castro & Estrada so I'm assuming one of them has to go. And we've replaced a potential young star in Milledge who was one of our best hitters with runners in scoring position last year with a slightly older, but still young outfielder who bats around .270.I know Ryan Church has hit well against the Mets in the past, but I think every National looked like a Hall of Famer against the Mets the last week of the season. Is there something in Ryan Church that we don't see? Would you rather see Church in right field than Gomez or Milledge? It just doesn't make any sense, but I trust Omar has a great plan in place that us plebeians can...

Trade! Mets Deal Lastings Milledge!
2007-11-30 19:11:00 Metsblog.com is reporting the Mets have dealt OF Lastings Milledge to the Washington Nationals for OF Ryan Church and C Brian Schneider. I am shocked. Heyman's Latest: Piazza, Matthews, Milledge
2007-11-26 20:22:00 SI.com's Jon Heyman checks in with a new Daily Scoop column full of rumors. A lot of the standard trade talk we've seen regarding Miguel Cabrera, Johan Santana, Miguel Tejada, and Dan Haren. All these guys require two good young players or more in a trade. Mike Piazza is considering DHing in Japan if he doesn't find anything he likes in the U.S. Heyman talked to an AL exec who speculated that the Angels may try to unload Gary Matthews Jr. GMJ makes $9MM in '08, $10MM in '09, $11MM in '10, and $12MM in '11. He currently has a full no-trade clause. Juan Uribe and Vicente Padilla are two salary-dump types whose names have surfaced in recent trade talks (unrelated to each other). Padilla is owed $24.75MM over the next two seasons. Heyman believes the Mets are very willing to trade Lastings Milledge and have discussed him often. We knew the Mets had discussed Ramon Hernandez and Gerald Laird. Heyman adds the Nats' Brian Schneider to the mix.&n...

The Milledge double standard
2007-09-22 16:04:00 Lastings Milledge was suspended three games after his tirade on Thursday night. It wasn't arguing the call with the home plate umpire and his subsequent ejection from the game that cost him so many games, it was his return to the field after Rickey Henderson basically dragged him to the dugout. Whats amazing is that many fans have pounced on Milledge, stating that this is an example of his lack of maturity and that he's a hot head that can't be trusted in the spot light. I read a thread on another site that said this incident was exactly why Omar should trade him during the off-season. Milledge operates under a completely unfair double standard, when Lo Duca and Anderson were thrown out of games, resulting in suspensions they were called fiery competitors and clubhouse leaders. Lo Duca's tirade wasn't much calmer then Milledge's so it's not the degree of the meltdown but simple that it was Milledge. The fact is, Milledge has had some very bad calls go against him recently, he...

Milledge in the Postseason
2007-08-23 17:10:00 Let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. The Mets have by no means locked up a spot in the postseason, but last night's game against the Padres and Jake Peavy had me considering Milledge's roll in the postseason lineup.Lastings Milledge has been a great asset to this team in the second half. He's hitting for average, but also getting big hits with men on base and clutch hits as was evident on Tuesday night. He should absolutely start in front of Shawn Green for the rest of the year.Last night I thought would be a good test for Milledge facing a stellar starter in Jake Peavy. Peavy is the type of pitcher that Milledge would face in the playoffs on a regular basis. Milledge struggled mightily last night going 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts. There wasn't a single at bat where Milledge looked comfortable at the plate.I can see Milledge struggling come playoff time. There are very few young players who perform well in their first postseason appearance, so we need to keep getting Green some ...

Why doesn't Willie like Milledge?
2007-08-03 22:02:00 It seems strange to me that Milledge isn't starting in center again today, because you would expect with Beltran on the DL that Milledge would be getting every possible chance to prove himself worthy of taking over RF when Beltran is healthy. But it's obvious that Willie doesn't like Lastings Milledge and I really don't understand it. What more can Milledge do to earn respect from Willie? He's had big hits huge defensive plays and he is hustling.. But yet Marlon Anderson gets the start in CF again today I really don't understand it at all.. What boggles my mind is when Milledge plays he bats 8th behind all the bench/backup players but today Marlon Anderson gets the start and he's batting 5th. 100% agree with John Delcos on this one, Willie has something against Milledge and I really don't know why.

Beltran's Considering DL Time, We Need Milledge
2007-07-27 21:03:00 Carlos Beltran is once again considering time on the DL with his abdominal strain that hurts him when he coughs and sneezes (that's not a joke he really said that). Manager Willie Randolph said there is a chance that Beltran will go on the 15 day DL. I think this proves that we need to make a trade deadline acquisition of a corner outfielder, but we can not mortgage the future just to acquire a 35 year old outfielder. If we are going to make a big move, I will be ok with giving up Heilman and Pelfrey, but certainly not Milledge. Milledge has came up to play with this team and seems like he really learned his lesson about being stupid. He tries as hard as he can every game and is coming up in the clutch almost every game. I was not angry at all when he got thrown out the other day trying to stretch a single into a double. It shows that he is really putting his heart into what he is doing and wants to show a Lasting imprssion to the New York Mets fans and organization not as a thug wh...

Milledge Call-up
2007-07-12 18:44:00 Mark Hale of the NY Post is reporting a move that we all knew was coming, Lastings Milledge, who is finally healthy after a foot injury will be recalled to start the second half of the season. Milledge seems to always be surrounded by controversy but it wasn't his mouth that kept him off the big league roster, in a horrible twist of fate he has missed two months with a leg injury during which time the team has used retreads Ledee and Newhan, younger prospect Gomez, out of position Easley and a volunteer by Lo Duca (not accepted) to fill the void created by injuries to Alou and Chavez. Now his right handed bat and flight of foot in the outfield will be a welcome addition to a team that has looked listless with too many role players in a starting line-up. With Gomez out 6-8 weeks I don't think there's anyway they can consider moving Milledge even for a top pitcher without a power threat right handed bat in the line-up this team has struggled offensively.July 12, 2007 -- Lastings Mil...

Mets Lastings Milledge Sets Sights on New York
2007-07-08 04:39:00 Mets outfield prospect Lastings Milledge -- coming back from a two-month layoff due to a foot injury -- has been complaining about being rusty but continues to hit during minor league play.Millege is hitting .285 in 14 at-bats with Double A Binghamton, and hit an RBI triple and scored against Connecticut Saturday. Milledge was scheduled to play again Sunday, but likely will remain in Binghamton through the major league All-Star break. With four outfielders missing time with various ailments in New York, however, it likely will not be long before Milledge is called up.Milledge, 22, 12th overall pick in the 2003 draft, hit .337 in 193 at-bats for Binghamton two years ago.

Lastings Milledge Escapes from Mets Doghouse
2007-07-06 22:08:00 Top Mets prospect Lastings Milledge -- in the doghouse after committing a number of gaffs earlier this season -- will return to action soon after the All-Star break, maybe even sooner.Milledge had earned the enmity not only of the front office but his teammates after recording a misogynistic rap song in addition to committing other no-no's, but finds himself back in good graces now because four of the team's outfielders are on the disabled list and he is needed.General manager Omar Minaya dodged a bullet by not trading him, as had been contemplated.Milledge had played only three games with New York this year before being sent down to Triple A New Orleans, where he promptly strained ligaments in his right foot and was forced to sit out for two months. But doctors believe Milledge is ready to return to the field now, and the Mets are only too happy to have him if he can stay out of trouble. It's a good sign that Milledge is back on the field, I would much rather have him with the team instead of Ricky Ledee. Any trade that includes Milledge is on hold until he's healthy. Gomez appears to be a much better prospect then Milledge and I assume that if an outfielder is going in a trade it will be Milledge.Lastings Milledge went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored in a rehab game today for St. Lucie in a Gulf Coast League game. Injury report: Milledge
2007-06-27 00:10:00 Rotoworld is reporting that Lastings Milledge could begin playing in minor league games this week. One thing I would be surprised about is if a trade occurred prior to Milledge returning to full strength. Whether it's because he's part of the trade and another team wants to ensure he's not damaged goods or that the Mets want to assess his status prior to making a possibly unnecessary trade.Lastings Milledge (foot) could play in a minor league game by the end of this week.Milledge has been out since spraining a ligament in his foot in late April.

My thoughts are at the very bottom of the post. I welcome anyone to email questions to us and select ones will be posted for discussion:Question about Lastings for you and your readers:Yes, I know its been asked before, but things are starting to fall into place and there are new issues at hand here…and the rap album really isn't one of them.I was always of the belief that Milledge would be traded by the deadline, just because he didn't fit in too well in the clubhouse. I think he did an excellent job in spring training to try and re-coup his image. He also did a great job of hitting the crap out of the ball in the spring. These things all bring up his value. Pressure On Mets To Trade Milledge
2007-05-17 18:23:00 In general, it seems the New York media would like to see Lastings Milledge pushed out of town. They don't like his cocky attitude and can't comprehend his rap music. He's not seen as a humble team player. Far more important, though, is that the 22 year-old still looks like he will be a very valuable center fielder. I keep going back to this post from Nate Silver in January. Milledge remains underrated, and his mild transgressions plus this year's foot injury may only further improve the opportunity to buy low. So he has too much swagger and said some standard stuff in a rap song? To me those are really weak reasons to trade a top prospect for fifty or seventy-five cents on the dollar.

OP/ED: Gomez vs. Milledge
2007-05-17 17:41:00 Last night while watching Carlos Gomez blossom into a major league player, I was wondering if Lastings Milledge got off to the same type of start. I recall that Milledge fell apart in Milwaukee and Boston, but couldn't remember how he was doing before that. For quite sometime the prospect reports have indicated that Gomez and Martinez have higher ceilings then Milledge. To be honest I thought maybe Milledge's off-field incidents were impacting his rankings because he is such a talented player. But after seeing Gomez's first two games I understand why people are so high on him, I just couldn't remember what type of start Lastings got off too. John Delcos of Lo Hud Journal must have been thinking the same thing as he made the following comments on his blog.Gomez is the real deal. I covered Milledge’s first few games with the Mets last season and he didn’t have nearly the presence and confidence that Gomez has. 2007-05-17 16:47:00 I am not going to say much on this, but why after the whole Don Imus bit, would anyone do this? Especially an African-American athlete with the profile of Lastings Milledge?Sure, in the United States, you can do you please and express yourself or whatever you believe in whatever language you care to desire, but people in the public eye should really watch what they say.Especially someone who has been under as much scrutiny as Milledge?Mets prospect Lastings Milledge is in trouble with the team once again, this time for making a rap CD that uses foul and offensive language. The song, "Bend Ya Knees" was on the Web site www.souljaboirecords.com, the record label the 22-year-old outfielder founded. Milledge can be heard using a racist term for blacks and language derogatory to women. "We don't approve of the lyrics," New York general manager Omar Minaya said Wednesday. Minaya said he spoke to Milledge -- currently at Triple-A New Orleans and on the disabled list -- and conveyed t...

Milledge in the dog house, again
2007-05-16 14:11:00 If Lastings Milledge wasn't on the minor league disable list he would be playing in the major leagues this week. But just as he was passed over by Carlos Gomez for this call-up assignment, he may end up being passed over all together. The Mets are a team that is very concerned with their image within the community and want squeaky clean players like David Wright and Derek Jeter. They took a risk in signing Milledge who had a checkered past, but his talent out weighed those issues and they hoped he'd mature past them. Last year's struggles were two fold; due in part, by his poor fielding but more concerning was his difficulty in getting along with his teammates.Milledge entered spring training this year, with a new found attitude that was accompanied by a harnessing of all that on-the-field potential. Teammates raved about his performance on the field while the staff and organization praised his locker room behavior/attitude. Milledge had improved so much that the team found away ...

Gomez,Martinez,Milledge who stays who goes
2007-05-12 18:57:00 This has come up so many times in the past, but I'd like to bring it back up and see what you guys think about the future of these players and where they will end up.Now looking at the team right now you have a 41 year old Moises Alou in LF who will most likely retire after this year, and in RF a 34 year old Shawn Green who will not be on the Mets after this year. Then you have the 30 year old All-Star MVP type CF in Carlos Beltran who isn't going anywhere and is signed through 2012. That's 2 spots open in the future for 3 players, here's where each player stands.Lastings Milledge 22 years old AAA:Ready when neededCarlos Gomez 21 years old AAA: Ready only in case of emergency, Ready for 2008 seasonFernando Martinez 18 year old AA: Ready at earliest 2009 possibly brightest futureHere's some scouting reports on Fernando Martinez, and Carlos Gomez thanks to www.metsprospecthub.blogspot.co-mFernando Martinez"Strengths: Martinez has an advanced approach well beyond his years. He has ...

Milledge on the table
2007-05-06 20:19:00 SI in the rumors section has a link to a Boston Globe article which indicates that Omar may put Lastings Milledge back on the trade market, after the spring he had his value should be through the roof. Boston has an extra arm with Lester coming back and none have options, but Traveras isn't worth Milledge. The Indians may look to move Paul Bryd (former Met) or C.C. Sabthian if they fall out of contention and can't resign him. The Cubs spent an awful lot of money, to be a 500 club and Zambrano negotiations aren't going well.Yet Minaya, who says he's confident that Pedro MartÃnez will return in August, is also hoping to add a starter before the trading deadline. He sees two possibilities: getting a guy who has gotten off to a poor start and needs a change of scenery, or trading from a surplus in one area for something in another team's area of surplus.Minaya has a major chip with outfielder Lastings Milledge, but can he get a quality arm in return for such an outstanding player?...

Milledge To Miss Four To Six Weeks
2007-05-01 16:04:00 Mets outfielder Lastings Milledge was diagnosed with sprained ligaments in his right foot and is expected to miss four to six weeks. He hadn’t appeared in a game for Triple-A New Orleans since leaving with soreness in his foot after one at-bat April 23. The 22-year-old Milledge made the Mets’ Opening Day roster, but batted just three times in two weeks before being dispatched to the minors in favor of No. 5 starter Mike Pelfrey. Milledge’s injury comes at inopportune time for both him and the club. Big league left fielder Moises Alou is having his throwing shoulder examined today, and New Orleans outfielder Ben Johnson is already on the disabled list with a sprained shoulder.

Milledge report
2007-04-23 18:45:00 A concern I had with optioning Lastings Milledge to AAA News Orleans was how the young player would respond to the assignment. Milledge had an incredible spring for the Mets and if it were not for the contract of veteran OF Shawn Green many speculate that the job would have been Milledge's.Milledge spent the first two weeks of the season sitting on the major league clubs bench, watching Shawn Green explode at the the plate and serve adequately in the field. Milledge only had three plate appearances in his two week stint before he was sent down to make room for Mike Pelfrey.Last year, I could easily see Milledge slumping and being down if he was demoted after a hot streak, he just wasn't ready.Adam Rubin at Surfing the Mets/Daily News reports on just how well he has responded and in a quote gives us a look at how he's stayed up-beat.He’s been on a tear ever since. Milledge extended his hitting streak to six games with the Zephyrs. He was a combined 9-for-13 with a homer, four RB...
