Steve Schmoll came to the Mets in the Duaner Sanchez trade, prior to the 2006 season Omar sent Jae Seo to the Dodgers for Sanchez and Schmoll. Seo was subsequently traded to the Rays for Mark Hendrickson and then ended up pitching over seas. When Schmoll came over he was much less accomplished then Sanchez but did have some experience in the majors with Los Angeles (2005- 48gms/ 5. 01 ERA). I never understood why Schmoll didn't a chance at the end of the season but while he served for two years as the Zephyrs closer and late inning reliever, he never did come up. Schmoll had drastically changed his delivery from a 3/4 Laredo style to a full submariner like Chad Bradford, it resulted in his ERA going from 4.69 in 2006 to 3.76 last year. Update [2008-3-11 13:22:17 by Eric Hz]: Thank you to Jeff Erickason for having me on. I enjoyed the chance to talk baseball with one of the Kings of Fantasy Baseball. We spoke about the potential of Lastings Milledge along with 1B Nick Johnson as a serious sleeper in 2008. Look back at his 2006 season. He walked 110 times! I am not worried about the broken leg. After all, Jeff Kent has seemd to surive his well enough, hasn't he? Both Upton brothers were discussed. I like both very much and have drafted accordingly, but never at prices I considered a reach. FWIW, my Bluetooth went on the fritz for the first time! Figures. I am scheduled to be a guest on XM Radio's "Fantasy Focus With Jeff Erickson" on Channel 175 during the second segment ~ 12:25 PM.  I'll provide an update later with what we spoke about for those who can't tune in. If you haven't heard there's news from the winter meeting that the Tigers and Mets are talking about a possible trade that would send Dontrelle Willis to the Mets.What's the catch? Well, the catch is the Tigers have found themselves with a payroll overload and need to cut back so any deal involving Dontrelle would also include taking Pudge Rodriguez and his +$13MM salary. Now Pudge has a no trade clause, but would waive it if he was offered a contract extension from a playoff team (i.e. New York Mets).So how does this make the Milledge trade any worse? Well we now have an overload at catcher so for this deal to happen we'd either a) have to cut one of our existing catchers under contract b) find a way to package one of them in a deal for Willis/Rodriguez. The problem with option B is we just signed Castro to a contract and just traded for Schneider and are stuck with his contract. This is not about Ryan Church. No, this isn't another bash the Milledge trade post, the more I've thought about it, the more I'm OK with it. If Church stays we now have the left handed outfielder we need to replace Green and he is an up-grade over Green. Omar wanted a defensive catcher and he got him, if Schnieder improves the present staff then he might be the equivalent of a pitching up-grade. But why didn't Omar get a reliever out of the trade, I know it would have cost a lower level prospect or two but we need pitching. In the last two days the Nats have traded one reliever and another is being shopped. Yahoo Sports stated last week that the Mets had discussed Andruw Jones in case Milledge was moved in a trade, at the time it was presumed for a pitcher. Most teams have five outfielders and that would be about as deep as you can get in an outfield: Alou, Beltran, Church, Chavez and Jones. After a horrible year Jones might want to take a one year deal in a large market to raise his value and then try the market again. I have no doubt that Jones will rebound form last years performance........Finally Yahoo sports reports that the Mets have internally considered Andruw Jones for right field in the event that Milledge is traded. I say sign him now and figure it out later, much in the same way the Angels have done with Hunter. Jones is one of the best fielders in the league and offensively I believe he will rebound. I'm still having a hard time grasping this trade on it's own validity. I know the team desperately wanted to move Milledge, as I said earlier in the day they are systematically moving the players they believed contributed to the collapse. I also understand that Omar wanted what he calls a defensive catcher who calls a good game and the team needed a left handed outfielder. But all we've heard is that pitching is the top priority and that the team is keeping all it's chips to make a pitching trade. Then the first major trade they make is for a catcher and outfielder, and the player with the most potential up-side is the one leaving. This was a trade on the surface that didn't need to be made and especially didn't need to be made now. I mean, I have a hard time believing they couldn't get a set-up man for him. When I heard on the WFAN today that the Mets were close to announcing a trade, after last night's posts I'm sure you know I was saying finally some movement. Then I heard the deal was Milledge for Church and Schneider, so as I sat in shock and waited to hear the rest, because there must be a reliever involved or some unknown starter from the minors. This was not the trade we've been waiting for and it perplexes me more than interests me. Today the Mets sent Lastings Milledge to their divisional rival, the Washington Nationals, for C Brian Schneider and OF Ryan Church.Why? Who knows. And please somebody explain it to me if you do know.Now the Mets will have 3 catchers on their roster in Schneider, Castro & Estrada so I'm assuming one of them has to go. Milledge's star has certainly fallen, but had it fallen so far that the A's didn't like him anymore?  I can't see how the Mets are going to be serious players in any Danny Haren trade talks without Milledge. Maybe the A's like Church better?

Lastings Milledge was suspended three games after his tirade on Thursday night. It wasn't arguing the call with the home plate umpire and his subsequent ejection from the game that cost him so many games, it was his return to the field after Rickey Henderson basically dragged him to the dugout. Whats amazing is that many fans have pounced on Milledge, stating that this is an example of his lack of maturity and that he's a hot head that can't be trusted in the spot light. I read a thread on another site that said this incident was exactly why Omar should trade him during the off-season. Milledge operates under a completely unfair double standard, when Lo Duca and Anderson were thrown out of games, resulting in suspensions they were called fiery competitors and clubhouse leaders. Let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. The Mets have by no means locked up a spot in the postseason, but last night's game against the Padres and Jake Peavy had me considering Milledge's roll in the postseason lineup.Lastings Milledge has been a great asset to this team in the second half. He's hitting for average, but also getting big hits with men on base and clutch hits as was evident on Tuesday night. He should absolutely start in front of Shawn Green for the rest of the year.Last night I thought would be a good test for Milledge facing a stellar starter in Jake Peavy. It seems strange to me that Milledge isn't starting in center again today, because you would expect with Beltran on the DL that Milledge would be getting every possible chance to prove himself worthy of taking over RF when Beltran is healthy. But it's obvious that Willie doesn't like Lastings Milledge and I really don't understand it. What more can Milledge do to earn respect from Willie? He's had big hits huge defensive plays and he is hustling.. But yet Marlon Anderson gets the start in CF again today I really don't understand it at all.. What boggles my mind is when Milledge plays he bats 8th behind all the bench/backup players but today Marlon Anderson gets the start and he's batting 5th. 100% agree with John Delcos on this one, Willie has something against Milledge and I really don't know why.

Carlos Beltran is once again considering time on the DL with his abdominal strain that hurts him when he coughs and sneezes (that's not a joke he really said that). Manager Willie Randolph said there is a chance that Beltran will go on the 15 day DL. I think this proves that we need to make a trade deadline acquisition of a corner outfielder, but we can not mortgage the future just to acquire a 35 year old outfielder.If we are going to make a big move, I will be ok with giving up Heilman and Pelfrey, but certainly not Milledge. Mark Hale of the NY Post is reporting a move that we all knew was coming, Lastings Milledge, who is finally healthy after a foot injury will be recalled to start the second half of the season. Milledge seems to always be surrounded by controversy but it wasn't his mouth that kept him off the big league roster, in a horrible twist of fate he has missed two months with a leg injury during which time the team has used retreads Ledee and Newhan, younger prospect Gomez, out of position Easley and a volunteer by Lo Duca (not accepted) to fill the void created by injuries to Alou and Chavez.Now his right handed bat and flight of foot in the outfield will be a welcome addition to a team that has looked listless with too many role players in a starting line-up. John Delcos of Lo Hud Journal reports on Lastings Milledge's first rehab game. It's a good sign that Milledge is back on the field, I would much rather have him with the team instead of Ricky Ledee. Any trade that includes Milledge is on hold until he's healthy. Gomez appears to be a much better prospect then Milledge and I assume that if an outfielder is going in a trade it will be Milledge.Lastings Milledge went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored in a rehab game today for St. Lucie in a Gulf Coast League game. Rotoworld is reporting that Lastings Milledge could begin playing in minor league games this week. One thing I would be surprised about is if a trade occurred prior to Milledge returning to full strength. Far more important, though, is that the 22 year-old still looks like he will be a very valuable center fielder.  I keep going back to this post from Nate Silver in January.  Milledge remains underrated, and his mild transgressions plus this year's foot injury may only further improve the opportunity to buy low.  So he has too much swagger and said some standard stuff in a rap song?  To me those are really weak reasons to trade a top prospect for fifty or seventy-five cents on the dollar.

Last night while watching Carlos Gomez blossom into a major league player, I was wondering if Lastings Milledge got off to the same type of start. I recall that Milledge fell apart in Milwaukee and Boston, but couldn't remember how he was doing before that. For quite sometime the prospect reports have indicated that Gomez and Martinez have higher ceilings then Milledge. To be honest I thought maybe Milledge's off-field incidents were impacting his rankings because he is such a talented player. But after seeing Gomez's first two games I understand why people are so high on him, I just couldn't remember what type of start Lastings got off too. If Lastings Milledge wasn't on the minor league disable list he would be playing in the major leagues this week. But just as he was passed over by Carlos Gomez for this call-up assignment, he may end up being passed over all together. SI in the rumors section has a link to a Boston Globe article which indicates that Omar may put Lastings Milledge back on the trade market, after the spring he had his value should be through the roof. Boston has an extra arm with Lester coming back and none have options, but Traveras isn't worth Milledge. The Indians may look to move Paul Bryd (former Met) or C.C. Mets outfielder Lastings Milledge was diagnosed with sprained ligaments in his right foot and is expected to miss four to six weeks. He hadn’t appeared in a game for Triple-A New Orleans since leaving with soreness in his foot after one at-bat April 23. The 22-year-old Milledge made the Mets’ Opening Day roster, but batted just three times in two weeks before being dispatched to the minors in favor of No. 5 starter Mike Pelfrey. Milledge’s injury comes at inopportune time for both him and the club. Big league left fielder Moises Alou is having his throwing shoulder examined today, and New Orleans outfielder Ben Johnson is already on the disabled list with a sprained shoulder.

A concern I had with optioning Lastings Milledge to AAA News Orleans was how the young player would respond to the assignment. Milledge had an incredible spring for the Mets and if it were not for the contract of veteran OF Shawn Green many speculate that the job would have been Milledge's.Milledge spent the first two weeks of the season sitting on the major league clubs bench, watching Shawn Green explode at the the plate and serve adequately in the field.
