2009-09-23 16:09:00
I may be more of a stranger at my bookstore.   I am a Kindle Girl!  I have lusted for an electronic reader for a long time.  I love books, love to read, and I cling to every book I love as if it is an orphan child.  I want to place them in good homes, or else I just keep them. I have a few bookcases in the basement that annoy Steve by their alphabetized order.  I always have a stack of "to be read volumes" in the family room, collecting dust and shaming me.  When I travel, I take 3 books to read, and a stack of guide books- and I am generally over the weight limit.  It...

U.S.A.H1N1 Vaccines, 195 Million Doses: Availability, Safety Issues
2009-09-22 20:43:00
Ari Brown, M.D.-- AVAILABILITY   Q. Does your office have swine flu vaccine yet? No. Medical providers have not received their shipment of swine flu vaccine yet. We anticipate getting the first shipment in mid-October. The U.S. plans to have 195 million doses of H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine, but it will be distributed in several batches on a weekly basis. Q. Will the vaccine be a shot or a nose spray? Well, there will be both forms of the vaccine. The FDA has approved three flu shots from three manufacturers and one nasal spray from another manufacturer. Q. What is the difference between the three H1N1 shots? All three vaccines protect against just one strain of influenza—H1N1. They will NOT protect against the other flu strains we typically see in the fall and winter season. They are all inactivated vaccines. And like the seasonal flu vaccines, these vaccines are created with egg product, so people with egg allergies need to steer clear. Here are the key differences: CSL B...
275 Million 3G Subscribers In India by 2013: Evalueserve
2009-09-18 10:00:00
The pesky 3G scenario in India is long evident from the minuscule 3G subscriber count for Public Telcos – MTNL &  BSNL. Their current subscriber count stands at mere 1000 & 5000 subscribers respectively and MTNL is even trying to give away 3G services on franchise basis. A recent study by Evalueserve could provide respite to gloomier 3G situation as it predicts that there would be 275 million 3G subscribers in India by year 2013. The report also goes on to predict that number of 3G handsets would reach 395 million by that year. Major findings of the report:- On 3G Subscriber demographics: The urban (above poverty line) segment will account for about 80 per cent of the 3G subscriber base by 2013. The demand for regional content like video clips, mobile comic strips and mobile magazines is expected to surge in the rural segment post-2012. On 3G handsets: The number of 3G handset users is already above 20 million even through 3G is still to be largely made...

Facebook Crosses 300 Million Users, Makes Money And Also Introduces Protot
2009-09-16 12:39:00
Facebook today announced that its crossed 300 million users across the globe. It also stated in a press release to WATBlog that it has become cashflow positive last quarter even though they expected to achieve the same by 2010. Quite a landmark achievement if you ask us. Finally one can say that social networking is making money! 300 million users are a lot but what’s even more interesting is that its taken just about 300 facebook engineers to reach to that number also less than 4 years in time. Facebook in its release promises that this is just the beginning and there is lots more they plan to offer. We for starters they also announced Prototype which is simple words can be called as Facebook’s Labs (like google labs). So what is Facebook Prototype? Facebook Prototypes let facebook share the experimentation going on inside the walls of Facebook with the rest of the world. 20 Million Broadband Users Will Take 5 Years While Govt Approves Broadband
2009-09-15 08:04:00
The Broadband Policy of 2004 stated that India would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 (almost) and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers! At this rate the target of 20 million broadband subscribers would be reached by 2014 so said Mr Manoj Kohli,Chairman, CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and CEO and Joint Managing Director of Bharti AirTel Ltd. Inspite of this slow growth the CII is aiming for 214 million connections by 2014 i.e. in the next 5 years. A tall ask if you ask us. The wire line infrastructure in India is certainly not equipped to provide this growth. What may give it the impetus is the upcoming wimax auctions which may lead to India being connected via Wimax. We have reported earlier on how 20% of the worlds wimax internet connections might be in India by 2012 and that could be the way broadband penetration could grow. There are a...

China Has 703 Million Cell Phone Users. The Middle Class Is Rising.
2009-09-06 04:28:00
703 million. (h/t Shanghaiist) Think about that for just a minute. That's about 2.5 times the population of the United States. More than three years ago (gosh, have we really been here that long??!!) I did a post on how China had hit 410 million cell phone users. In that post, I stated the following: I love this sort of hard number because to me it is a very accurate way to measure China's growth and increasing wealth, perhaps even more so than a more standard measure like per capita income, which can be easily manipulated and whose impact is heavily dependent on living costs. The way I see, it, if someone can afford a mobile phone, they are a legitimate potential buyer of Western products and a legitimate potential customer for Western retailers. The comments to that post (and some of our other posts) questioned the validity of the number. I recall someone saying that the number reflected the fact that many users had two phones. One for business and a "black phone" for ...

Even the most die-hard fans of hydrogen powered vehicles have a hard time finding a solution to the problem of storage for their fuel. However, the Department of Energy (DOE) has just challenged the general public to find a new way to store hydrogen and offered a six digit prize to anyone who can meet this goal.

English Wikipedia Reaches 3 Million Articles
2009-08-18 11:03:00
Wikipedia has announced on its homepage today the creation of the three millionth article on its English version. This milestone was created with the addition of a page about Beate Marie Eriksen, a Norwegian actress and film director. Wikipedia has been the most successful social media experiment in recent times. Started in 2001, the online encyclopedia has very quickly replaced Encyclopedia Brittanica as the most preferred destination for information seekers. What has been so dramatic in the growth of Wikipedia is that the contribution has been solely through volunteers and the foundation run with the help of donations! The website, including all the different languages, today has close to 13 million articles written by over 10 million registered users; not counting the several million other users who contribute as unregistered editors. From an Indian standpoint, Wikipedia has still got a lot of scope to grow considering that the Indian language sections of Wikipedia have had rela...

269 Million Handsets Shipped In Q2 2009, End Of Slowdown For Mobile Phone M
2009-08-14 07:12:00
269 Million handsets were shipped in the second quarter of this year, a little improved figure compared to the 253.5 million handsets shipped in the first quarter, reported ABI Research and the same is confirmed by Gartner. Though the numbers are still sharply down compared to last year, Improved sales figures are for sure signaling a turnaround. The economic slow down still has it’s impact on overall figures but smart phone sales kept growing as expected with a 27 percent growth year-on-year to 40 million devices. Highlights for the second quarter shipments include: Nokia beat expectations and remained leader even in smartphone segment. Nokia sold 16.9 million units compared to 13.7 million in the first quarter, increasing its market share to 38.3 percent. Apple had largest gains in the smartphone market, the company sold 5.4 million iPhones in Q2 compared to 892,000 last year. Apple’s market share grew to 13.3 percent from 2.8 percent last year. Nokia Ovi Mail Reaches 1 Million Users in Six Months
2009-08-13 06:55:00
In December 2008, Nokia launched Ovi Mail, a free email service targeted at the developing world where the internet penetration has been traditionally low. Also available on the web, Ovi mail’s core focus however has been on email access through mobile phones. The target audience – people with no PC and hence no means to access email. The strategy has clearly paid off with Nokia recently announcing the registration of its one millionth Ovi mail user. Of this number, over 65% are reported to have registered from a mobile device with a majority of the users coming from India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. Though this announcement does indicate the importance of going mobile in order for companies to spread their market further in these developing economies, it is in no way a milestone. To put the ‘one million’ in perspective, it is an insignificant number compared to the 196 million handsets shipped by the Finnish giant in just the first half of ...

Publicis Buys Razorfish From Microsoft for $530 Million: You Should Take No
2009-08-10 19:08:00
It is not just the magnanimity of the deal which in these days of billions might not seem much anyway, but there are some core aspects to the news that you as a digital media enthusiast should notice. The news of course is that Razorfish, easily amongst the biggest digital agencies in the world right now has been bought by Publicis from Microsoft. The story has been doing rounds since last week actually when WSJ reported that maybe Microsoft is developing cold feet (maybe the price) regarding the sale to finally being confirmed today. In a stock and cash sale Razorfish was acquired for around $530 million by the french advertising behemoth. However, there are quite a lot of other interesting aspects to the sale. Razorfish saw around $320 million in revenue in 2008 and Microsoft since it gave birth to the idea of dropping a people driven creative group from its technology portfolio had been looking at around the $600-700 million mark for Razorfish. Unfortunately a universally bad adv...
