Henry Aaron--a Baseball Player Worth Honoring
2008-05-20 21:07:00
Last Saturday, Henry "Hank" Aaron (BaseballLibrary.com, Wikipedia, Biography.com) delivered a commencement address at Concordia University. This was only the second commencement address he could remember giving--the other was at Harvard University. When asked by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel why he had decided to give an address at Concordia University, he replied, "It is Wisconsin. It is Milwaukee. It gives me a chance to see a lot of my friends. My attachment to Milwaukee and Wisconsin is always something that will be in my heart."Hank Aaron has a long history of playing baseball in Wisconsin: he played for both the Eau Claire Bears (Wikipedia) and the Milwaukee Brewers. During his long career in Major League Baseball, Hank Aaron went on to become the player to hit the most homeruns--755. Barry Bonds has since broken that record. But, I tend to agree with Hank--last Saturday he said, "I still consider myself the home-run king."In 6th grade, I read Hank Aaron's Autobiography: I H...

Ask the Experts: Milwaukee Brewers
2008-02-29 22:13:00
Here is another interview from our friends over at RotoProfessor. Hopefully you've had the opportunity to post over at his site, and if not its definitely worth checking out. He recently had the opportunity to pose five questions to Vic Feuerherd, a beat writer for the Wisconsin State Journal.Question 1: How will the position changes affect the production of Ryan Braun and Bill Hall?Vic Feuerherd: The goal is to improve the overall defense, which, in turn, the Brewers hope will help a starting pitching staff that struggled with, among other things, getting deep into games last season, especially in that July and August stretch when the Brewers lost their lead to the Chicago cubs in the Central Division. I expect that Braun will be oblivious to the change when he?s at bat. That?s just the kind of hitter he is. His poor fielding at third last season never hurt him at the plate. I suspect Hall will see some rejuvenation in his numbers now that he is back on some more familiar ground i...

Wise DFA'd, Brewers Look At Blalock
2007-12-11 20:57:00
UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 1:56pm: It's official, Wise has been DFA'd.  If the Brewers aren't able to trade him then he'll hook on somewhere as a free agent. FROM 12-10-07 at 10:20pm: Tom Haudricourt has some quality stuff tonight, aside from the aforementioned return of Salomon. 32 year-old reliever Matt Wise is looking like a non-tender candidate for Wednesday.  Eric Gagne took his uniform number.  Wise hasn't been too bad while eating up relief innings the past few years.  He only made a million bucks in '07.  The Brewers tended to use him in low-leverage situations in 2007. Some other non-tender candidates are listed here. Haudricourt is "starting to get some vibes" that the Brewers have their eye on Hank Blalock.  The 27 year-old third baseman hit .293/.358/.543 in limited duty this year.  He's locked up affordably - $5.95MM in '08 and a $6.2MM club option for '09.  Would Dave Bush and a decent pitching prospect cut it? showad();
Brewers Near Deal With Gagne
2007-12-09 03:52:00
UPDATE, 12-8-07 at 8:51pm: Tom Haudricourt has heard the deal might be around $10MM for one year. FROM 12-8-07 at 1:06pm: According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Brewers are nearing an agreement with free agent Eric Gagne.  It'll probably be a one-year deal, which jives with what Doug Melvin has said.  The move pushes newly acquired David Riske to the eighth inning, while Derrick Turnbow, Salomon Torres, and Guillermo Mota can split sixth and seventh inning duty. As far as I can tell, Gagne earned $8.5MM in 2007 ($6MM base plus $2.5MM in performance bonuses guaranteed for waiving his no-trade rights).  We'll have to wait to see the terms, but my guess is that this turns out to be a shrewd signing by Melvin.  Gagne will be in his comfort zone - National League, closer role.  showad();
Milwaukee Brewers 2008 Top Ten Prospects
2007-12-08 19:16:00
Here you go, Corey!! Either the Brewers have the best scouting and farm system in the game, or they've been extremely lucky. I think it's the former, but since Prince Fielder in 2002 the average timeframe of their number one pick reaching the major leagues is 18 months. The Brewers are hoping the
Brewers Acquire Torres; He Considers Retiring
2007-12-08 19:07:00
UPDATE, 12-8-07 at 12:06pm: Seems this story isn't over.  Torres is contemplating retirement, in which case the Brewers would probably lose the two prospects for nothing.  Torres will talk it over with his family and take a few days to decide. FROM 12-7-07 at 2:16pm: According to Tom Haudricourt, the Brewers have acquired reliever Salomon Torres for minor league relievers Marino Salas and Kevin Roberts. Torres turns 36 in March.  He threw a monstrous 280 innings in relief over 2004-2006, so it's no surprise his elbow started barking in 2007.  His strikeout rate in '07 was actually a career high, but his groundball rate decreased and he allowed a lot more home runs and hits than usual.  Torres makes $3.2MM in '08 and has a $3.75MM club option for '09. Haudricourt actually wrote the Brewers' top ten prospect list for Baseball America, so believe him when he says Salas and Roberts are good arms. Will the Pirates keep dealing?  It's known that reliev...
Brewers Inquire On Valverde
2007-12-05 21:23:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 2:22pm: I was just speculating below, but it turns out the Brewers actually did talk to the D'Backs about Valverde.  However the teams don't seem to match up. FROM 12-4-07 at 10:52pm: According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, the Diamondbacks are listening to offers for closer Jose Valverde.  They feel they've got the bullpen depth to cover his loss.  This trade possibility is nothing new to MLBTR readers, as it was first mentioned on November 6th.  Valverde figures to get a $3MM raise for '08, to about $5MM. No mention of possible suitors, but maybe the Brewers and Astros would be interested? showad();
Odds and Ends: Guillen, Crede, Hamilton, Boone
2007-12-05 21:06:00
Rounding up some of the day's random rumors and tidbits... Jose Guillen might get a light suspension for his exploits. There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night. The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013.  Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award.  Makes sense - to repeat Curt Schilling's situation.  Curt Schilling could get a million bucks by netting one Cy Young vote in 2008.  The BBWAA would rather preserve its right to have members make off-the-wall votes on occasion without bribery being accused. The Reds traded Buck Coats to the Jays.  They also released Jorge Cantu.  They now have an open spot on the 40-man roster. Could the Rays re-acquire Josh Hamilton?  There's speculation on the topic in Nashville. Buster Olney says Aaron Boone interests the Giants, Nationals, and Brewers. showad();
Odds and Ends: Cliff Lee, Edwin Jackson
2007-12-04 17:52:00
You know the drill... Nick Piecoro checks in on his blog.  Apparently the D'Backs discussed swapping Carlos Quentin for Cliff Lee before sending him to Chicago.  As much as he might've liked to it seems like Josh Byrnes couldn't get a starter for Quentin. Geoff Baker links the Mariners to Lee,  Ben Sheets, Mark Prior, and Edwin Jackson based on yesterday's buzz.  The Sheets one has since been questioned, since the Dodgers were identified as the West Coast team that inquired.  Prior could be part of a Raul Ibanez trade, but the Cubs are first focusing on Fukudome.  As for Jackson, the Rays would want more than just Ben Broussard. John Fay believes the Reds will have to part with Jay Bruce or Homer Bailey to get a frontline starter. showad();
Red Sox Interested In Haren, Sheets
2007-12-03 07:07:00
Interesting stuff from Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal.  McAdam says the Red Sox are eyeing Dan Haren and Ben Sheets as alternatives to Johan Santana. Haren, we knew about.  Sheets is an intriguing idea though.  Maybe the buzz on him will pick up this week.  Sheets will earn $11MM in 2008, tops among Brewers (Jeff Suppan's deal gets scary in '09).  Given Sheets' injury history and expiring contract, the price for him might be fairly reasonable (say, A.J. Burnett territory).  Sheets had a full no-trade clause for '07 and may only be traded to eight selected clubs in '08. showad();

Percival signing with Rays, Riske close with Brewers
2007-11-30 01:07:00
Couple of notes for your drive-time commute. Ken Rosenthal reports that Troy Percival will sign with the Rays for two years and $8 million. Incentives could push it to $10 million. Here's something you don't see every day: they're not making him take a physical -- though they have seen his medical records. Apparently the Yankees threw more cash at him, but he opted for the closing opportunity in Tampa Bay. I wonder where that leaves Al Reyes. Over on the ESPN side, Buster Olney says that David Riske is close to a deal with the Brewers. Olney supplies no details beyond it being a multiyear deal. As he notes, the Royals offered him two years and $6 million earlier this off-season. This deal could be comparable to Scott Linebrink's four years and $19 million. -Joe showad();
Brewers Looking For A Closer
2007-11-24 18:48:00
The Brewers missed out on Francisco Cordero by just $4MM.  They didn't feel Cordero was worth more than Billy Wagner, though Wagner signed several years ago.  Scott Linebrink also left for greener pastures.  Though GM Doug Melvin is giving the idea lip service, he can't be serious about entering next season with Derrick Turnbow back at closer.  There is one internal option I like - Dave Bush closed in college. The trade market offers Joe Nathan and Chad Cordero, according to Tom Haudricourt.  Jose Valverde, Kevin Gregg, Ryan Dempster, Brian Fuentes, Salomon Torres, Dan Wheeler, and Huston Street could be available as well.  An excess of starting pitching could be used to obtain one of these guys. Melvin still has plenty of free agent options: Eric Gagne, Octavio Dotel, Keith Foulke, Troy Percival, and Kerry Wood.  He could even get creative with a starter like Brett Tomko or Randy Wolf, if he doesn't like the Bush idea.  Al at the fine Al'...

Brewers Inquire On Wood
2007-11-22 05:07:00
We learned a week ago that Brewers GM Doug Melvin has eight or nine different free agent relievers on his radar (apparently aside from Francisco Cordero or Scott Linebrink).  Four of the relievers are known: Matt Herges, LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and Troy Percival. Some new facts emerged today, courtesy of Tom Haudricourt (as usual).  Haudricourt says Percival wants more years and money than the Brewers are comfortable with.  I'm guessing that means $5MM+ annually over three guaranteed years?  Seems crazy but that's my guess on what he's asking. We also learned a fifth reliever on Melvin's radar: Kerry Wood.  The Red Sox and Cubs are the frontrunners but the Brewers have inquired.  If Wood somehow gets three years...wow. Browsing the available relievers, I'll guess that Keith Foulke, Jeremy Affeldt, David Riske, and Octavio Dotel are the other guys. showad();
