Kiko the cat and mindfulness
2008-06-13 23:00:00 My cat died today. His name was Kiko. As I was leaving for work, I noticed Kiko was sleeping on the driveway blocking my exit. I stopped the car and walked over to him yelling “kiko”. I knew something was wrong when he did not respond and as I inched closer I could see he had died. Four hours earlier, Kiko ... Mindfulness Effective
2008-05-07 21:09:00 Mindfulness is a very simple concept, but a skill that escapes a lot of people. Simply put, when we are mindful we act as an observer of our minds, our thoughts and feelings, without judging, or holding onto anything. The object is to be completely present in the moment, mostly focused on our senses, our eyes, ears, nose, and skin. Having complete faith in ourselves, we simply accept whatever comes, assuming we have all we need to cope with anything as best we can. Worry and regret becomes a major distraction from being mindful in that it distracts from our attention to what is happening now. Jon Kabat-Zinn's stuff in the right sidebar provides great training material. Mindfulness has wide application in treatment of anxiety, depression, mood regulation as well as crisis stabilization. Now it has been found helpful in managing pain. HealthSkills Weblog €˜Mindfulness meditation has a quieting effect on me. It gives me a peaceful feeling while doing it and I am able to reduce my...

Mindfulness: Becoming aware of our thoughts
2008-04-03 03:58:00 Whatever we do in life, our mind is commenting. Whoever we meet, our mind passes judgement. There is an incessant stream of thoughts that is forever swirling in our heads, and they set the tone for whatever we do. There is nothing wrong with having these thoughts, but we must be aware of their existence. Otherwise, we become caught up in them, and they take control. Suppose we are lying in bed in an empty house. The thought occurs that an intruder may enter, or is perhaps already inside. We wonder if the neighbours would hear our screams for help, but decide they are too far away. Before we know it, we are completely petrified and unable to sleep. This is an example of unattended thoughts having dramatic and irrational influences on our emotional state. A similar mechanism can cause unjustified anger, irritation, or depression. The discursive mind is wonderful at bringing in data and bombarding us with suggestions. Access to this information is useful only if our intellect can discr...

The Tantra of Money and Mindfulness
2007-12-11 00:32:00 "I believe that to meet the challenge of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. Each of us must learn to work not just for his or her own self, family or nation, but for the benefit of all mankind. Universal responsibility is the real key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace, the equitable use of natural resources and, through concern for future generations, the proper care of the environment." - Dalai LamaLike to weave a few threads from discussions at different palces (mostly Zaadz) for my readers here. The word 'currency' captures the alive quality and function of flow, circulation and exchange better than the word money. (see word origin of some common economic terms). To be mindfully engaged we need to use our attention as currencyNo money for peace, unlimited supply for warHo did we come to this moment of great crisis/opportunity in the history of humankind now?Links: Mindfulness and Tantra

Remember that mindfulness meditation, and mindfulness based stress reduction is not a quick fix. It is about a technique you persevere with and see benefits from over time. For a more detailed article on mindfulness and its application for anxiety click here. The typical mindfulness meditation exercise involves watching the breath. Sitting (or lying) and bringing your concentration to bare on your breathing, and gently bringing it back to your breathing whenever you notice that it has wondered off elsewhere. In the seminal texts on the subject by Jon Kabat-Zinn it is suggested that the breath is notices not just as it enters the mouth but also in other places in the body that it reaches - the pit of the stomach, diaphragm, and even the toes! Mindfulness meditation techniques are so good for sufferers of anxiety and panic that they are one of the few things I recommend ...

Meditation Mindfulness
2007-09-12 01:10:00 Mindfulness Meditation image courtesy: Passionate Service If your mind is always restless and busy, then mindfulness is the meditation you should be practicing. If you think about your deadlines at work while eating dessert or you keep thinking about your boss while on holiday, your mind seriously needs to learn to be here and now. When your mind is wandering all the time, you are missing out on life. You can not do anything fully and wholeheartedly. You deprive yourself of the pleasure of being in the moment and enjoying the activity. Though mindfulness is the quality emphasised by Buddhism, people belonging to any faith can practice mindfulness. You do not have to spare time to cultivate mindfulness. Anytime or in any situation you can become aware and mindful. Mindfulness can be achieved by focusing the undivided attention on whatever you are doing or experiencing. Here and Now is the Mantra to be remembered all the time. Easiest way to be here and now...

More Mindfulness Meditation
2007-03-24 02:39:00 This is just a little addition to my last post on Mindfulness Meditation which can be read by following this link. Watching the breath, without trying to change or control it, is the backbone of mindfulness meditation. And, as I previously talked about, when the conscious mind interrupts with either fantasy, worry or recollection I gently take my attention back to my breath, after acknowledging the thought. The key being to keep in the present time, where everything is absolutely as it is meant to be. The idea that everything is as it is meant to be is sometimes a hard one to grasp. In brief, we live in a world of cause and effect, where every action eventually has an outcome. Anxiety and depression for instance have causes (emotional, physical, genetic, spiritual), and because of those causes whatever is happening right now, is exactly as it should be. The laws of cause and effect do not make mistakes. Odd outcomes have odd causes preceding them. Therefore wherever we are, and how ...

Mindfulness
2007-02-12 22:24:00 In our modern society it may be difficult to get time for self reflection and stillness. We don't give much thought or awareness to what is going on in our minds and bodies. And what is happening beyond our bounderies, we probably give even less thought. When we go from a to b we usually don't see and experience the surroundings in a present and aware way. Most of the time our minds are detached from the outside world. In this state we tend to be careless of how we treat our environment. A good way to become more aware is to practice mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is the practice whereby a person is intentionally aware of his or her thoughts and actions in the present moment, non-judgmentally. Mindfulness is applied to both bodily actions and the mind's own thoughts and feelings. When we are aware of our thoughts and feelings we can experience our surroundings in a more clear way, seeing things in a new window.Mindfulness (sati) Mindfulness in Plain English by Hen...
