Through May 4, the Minnesota Twins find themsleves sitting atop the AL Central.  With an OBP ranked last in the Americna League and 28th in the majors, their efforts fly in the face of accepted baseball theory that OBP is the most important hitting category.  Amongst the other 9 first or second place teams, seven are in the top 10 in OBP, and the Phillies rank 15th and the Orioles 22nd overall. If the Twins aren't doing it with OBP, maybe their pitching is stellar.  While not "stellar", the Twins staff ranks 5th in the AL and 13th overall in team ERA.  What has been stellar, though, has been the number of free passes the have given - just 73.  That is the lowest number of walks allowed by any team in baseball. What are your thoughts based on what you have seen during Spring Training?Phil Miller: He’s still got good stuff, but the ungodly slider may be gone for good. I just think every time he throws it, he’s reminded of the pain, and he’s worried about tearing the sutures or the new ligament. I am not sure we should actually be calling this an afternoon delight as the Boston Red Sox split-squad teams did not fare well on either coast of Florida. On the right coast of Florida, the Red Sox got shellacked by the Orioles while on the left coast the Twins put a beating on the Sox as well. Against the Orioles, two of four players competing for the 5th spot in the rotation, Julian Tavarez and Kyle Snyder both got shelled as they combined to give up 9 hits and 9 runs in 5 ? innings today as the Red Sox split-squad team lost to the Oreos 12-2. Michael Tejera wasn’t any better out of the bullpen as he gave up 3 runs, 3 hits and 2 walks in ? of an inning of work. Yesterday the Minnesota Twins extended 1B Justin Morneau for six years and $80MM and RF Michael Cuddyer for three seasons plus a team option on a 4th for a total of $35MM.  I couldn't help thinking these moves were made to soften the blow of a Johan Santana trade. These financial commitments demonstrate the team is committed to a core of "veteran" players the fans can identify as their team.  Jerseys can be bought without fear that the player will be gone in a season or two. Marketing efforts can build around the same group of players for several seasons. After those considerations, I couldn't help seeing that the money was close to what it may take to sign Johna Santana to an extension and begin asking why sign a firstbaseman and league average RF should get that but not a CY Young lefthander.
