A Minor Observation
2008-07-08 05:41:00
I took a little time during my vacation to blog surf some smaller blogs that are representative of the GOP base and found that almost all of them had negative things to say about Obama however none of them had anything positive to say about McCain. Admittedly my sample was small but if it is indeed indicative of a larger trend then McCain is in trouble. It would also explain why McCain is still running to the right while Obama seems to be moving to the center. McCain is in a tricky spot in that his courting of the right turns off the independents while his attempts to woo the center turns off the base. My feeling remains that unless Obama screws the pooch somehow McCain will lose. The only question to me is by what margin. His only chance, in my opinion, is to master Obama's technique of not being specific without appearing to be vague.

Minor Emergency Preparedness
2008-06-06 20:34:00
Emergency Lifehacks:Plan Ahead I am all for people making any level of preparation for emergencies. This is kind of a brief, novice level kind of disaster kit. The problem is that the thinking is kind of shallow. As an example CPR is good training if you can get the person to medical attention. The people that are 'saved' by CPR don't jump to their feet and live long happy lives, they are carried by ambulance to the ER. There isn't much value in have a giant first aid kit that you don't know how to use. It would be better to have a number of first aid kits full of stuff that you can actually operate. read more

Minor League Report
2008-06-04 21:57:00
In April, most the hype around the Giants farm system surrounded the Giants High A affiliate in San Jose. This month the spotlight has to be on Madison Bumgarner. The month that Bumgarner put together in low-A Augusta has to have Giants fans optimistic about the young lefty's future. Bumgarner followed up a mediocre April by going 3-0 in May with 34 strikeouts and 23 hits allowed in 29.1 innings pitched. He only allowed 2 earned runs in May which led to a 0.23 era as well. Now sitting at 5-2 with a cool 2.10 era, Bumgarner is starting to look worthy of the number 10 pick he was taken at last June. The Giants aren't going to rush Bumgarner, so even if he continues to dominate the way he has over the last 5 weeks, don't expect to see him make any advancements any time soon. As for the other 2007 top draftees, Nick Noonan has been the best at the plate hitting .275 with 3 home runs and 27 rbi. Wendall Fairley was the draft pick with the most offensive upside but the outfielder is s...

Witness at R. Kelly sex-tape trial tells of three-way sex with minor
2008-06-03 20:15:00
A key prosecution witness said Monday she had videotaped, three-way sex twice with pop singer R. Kelly and an underaged girl, at his trial on 14 charges of child pornography. Kelly, 41, and his alleged victim, who was 13 at the time, have denied being on a home video leaked to the Chicago Sun-Times and later on the Internet in 2002 that form the basis of the charges that could put the musician away for a maximum 15 years. Lisa Van Allen said Monday that after she and Kelly met in late 1997, they filmed each other with the alleged victim on two occasions in 1999 and 2000, although prosecutors stressed that neither tape was the recording shown the jury at the trial.

LA's Furcal may test sore back in minor leagues
2008-06-03 12:41:00
The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't seen much of Rafael Furcal since he went on the disabled list with lower-back soreness a month ago. So when Furcal showed up in the clubhouse Monday afternoon with a new haircut, Manager Joe Torre feigned surprise. "I'm sorry, but there are no visitors allowed," Torre joked.Furcal may soon be doing more than visiting. He resumed batting practice Sunday and was on the field in uniform during pregame drills Monday. Last season, Furcal started the schedule on the disabled list with a sprained left ankle then returned to the lineup before the ankle was fully healed and was never at full strength. As a result, Furcal said he's being more cautious this time."I'm guessing it's going to be a very methodical process here," Torre said.Furcal, originally resistant to the idea of a minor league rehab assignment, said Monday he thought it was a good idea but refused to guess when he might be ready.

The local minor-league team would also probably challenge my authority ever
2008-05-30 17:02:00
Here's the kind of person I imagined, when I was younger, I'd turn out to be:"a good guy who also happens to be quite good-looking. Plays baseball for a local minor-league team and volunteers at a youth center. He and his girlfriend don't have the sort of relationship that involves long, heartfelt discussions or candle-lit dinners. It's more the kind that involves sex and the occasional favor."Here's the kind of guy I turned out to be:"technically the boss, though judging from his ability to tell people what to do, sometimes it's hard to tell who's in charge. He's a natural born worrier whose workers drive him crazy and challenge his authority every other minute."Those descriptions are actually parts of character bios from USA Network's new original series In Plain Sight, a series about the U.S. Marshals who run the Witness Protection Program. It sounds fascinating -- an examination of what it's like to work with criminals and people on the run from the law with the help ...

Unaccompanied Minor Fees/Charges
2008-05-24 16:46:00
Whenever Tutubi hears of kids flying solo, he remembers the romantic film Sleepless in Seattle, starring Tom Hanks (Sam) and Meg Ryan (Annie), where Sam's son Jonah flew alone to New York to meet Annie to realize his wish for his lonely daddy. That's the movies where almost every rule can be broken for "cinematic effect."In reality, you need to know the rules and the law before before your kid flies on an airline alone. Usually, you need to pay additional fees for the service as well the law of the destination country. For unaccompanied minor children below fifteen traveling to the Philippines alone or without a parent, be aware of the (stupid) Waiver of Exclusion Ground contained in an old Commonwealth Act 613 (that should be repealed, Tutubi thinks). More information on WEG below from one official Philippine Embassy website:"WAIVER OF EXCLUSION GROUND (WEG) FOR UNACCOMPANIED MINOR CHILDREN(12) Children under fifteen years of age, unaccompanied by or not coming to a parent, except ...

Mother's Day; The O's Lose to K.C., Some Minor Notes...
2008-05-12 17:20:00
As many of us know, yesterday was Mother's Day throughout Major League Baseball, and select players on all teams celebrated the day and helped promote the cause against breast cancer via the Susan G. Komen Foundation by either adorning pink arms bands, necklaces and some actually used pink bats at the plate. After starting off their road trip on a disastrous note with two bad series in the Golden State, the Orioles won the first three games in Kansas City before being shut out by the Royals, 4-0.I didn?t see much of the Orioles this weekend, but I just got watch a little of the game online via MLB.tv this morning and they seemed to have certainly no chance against Brian Bannister. Sunday was just one of those games where you just had to tip your hat to the opponent because they deserved the win.Bannister went eight strong innings, as he allowed two hits along with two walks and struck out five. Jose Guillen & Billy Butler had two hits and an RBI, while Alex Gordon and Mark Teaha...

Lugo minor injury
2008-05-10 19:55:00
With the state of the rotation, it's important to keep an eye on how the starters are doing in New Orleans. Omar usually gets veteran pitchers to take minor league deals by making gentleman's agreements, such as being the first ones to get called up as long as their pitching well. Because of this, I'm sure if we need starters the first two in line are Claudio Vargas and Tony Armas Jr. But the pitcher with the best numbers is Ruddy Lugo, he's 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA and has a K/BB ratio of 4.00 (BB 14/ SO 38). Ruddy the younger brother of Boston SS ( and often rumored to be an Omar Favorite) Julio Lugo, is a 27 y/o right handed pitcher with 102 major league relief appearances from 2006-2007 with the A's and Rays going 8-4 with a 4.39 ERA. In his last start on Wednesday night Lugo injured his hamstring and will miss his next start. Hopefully, it wont be one of those lingering injuries that effects his performance as it looks like Lugo could have a chance to contribute this year.Zephy...

Minor earthquake in Northern Virginia
2008-05-06 21:32:00
A minor earthquake, registered at a microscopically low 1.8, rocked the Northern Virginia area at about 1:30 p.m. this Tuesday afternoon. The epicenter was located near Annandale, Virginia in Fairfax County according to the U.S. Geological Survey. To date, no reports of damage or injuries have come out nor should they be expected, truth be known. The quake was originally confused with planned blasting, set for later Tuesday, associated with the expansion of the Fort Belvoir military base. Some residents reported hearing a loud boom followed by rumbling (or vice versa), which would have seemed like more than the 1.8 scale event actually recorded. UPDATE: Earthquake upgraded in intensity, see newest post.----Relevant links: WJLA/7, WTOP/103.5, Washington Post
