"My Face Is Ugly Enough"- Amitabh Bachchan
2007-08-31 13:43:00 Modesty is Amitabh Bachchan’s second name even though at times we do feel he goes over-board. On being asked if he is going bald for Mira Nair’s Shantaram, Big B in his typical self-depreciating style is quick to say:“It’s completely untrue. When I heard about this, I spoke to Mira and she rubbished it. She hasn’t even envisaged me as bald for Shantaram, let alone share it with the media, which is so busy imagining me bald through morphed pictures on the net, etc. But sorry, I’m not obliging,” he says."My face is ugly enough. I cannot do anything to improve it. Nothing can save it,” he says wryly.

Mira Nair's Gives All The Scoop On Johnny Depp's SHANTARAM
2007-03-28 10:37:00 Arthur J Pais talks to Mira Nair and like everyone wants to know about Johnny Depp and Shantaram.Johnny Depp is going to play the lead in Shantaram. He is also one of its producers. What was your first impression of him? People who have known him for long will tell you that he is a humble soul with great curiosity about the world. And those were my impressions too. He loves taking risks, and that is why you see him in big films such as the Pirates Of The Caribbean series, and smaller films like The Libertine. You never get the feeling that you are dealing with a movie star when you work with him. He is down-to-earth and very humane. You made a detailed presentation to Depp of your vision for Shantaram. How long did he take to approve it? A few days. It was a thorough presentation, and many people were involved in helping him make the decision. Had he seen The Namesake before that? He had watched the film at a private screening. He gave me a big hug after the...

Mira Nair's Namesake Review
2007-03-09 16:31:00 Rediff reviews Mira Nair's The Namesake and here is what they say:When a book is made into a film, especially one that is penned by a Pulitzer-Prize winning author, there's more scope for potential disaster. Will the characters, locations, plots and sub-plots pan out as effectively on celluloid as they do in the reader's imagination? Mira Nair's The Namesake, adapted from Jhumpa Lahiri's book by the same name (she won the Pullitzer Prize in 2000 for Interpreter of Maladies), does not disappoint. In fact, it surpasses one's expectations. The story begins in 1971 Kolkata, a time when foreign products dazzled us and visits by expatriate relatives were pretty much the event of the year. A young Bengali settled in the US, Ashoke Ganguli (Irrfan) marries a local girl Ashima (Tabu) and they migrate to the US. Some years down the line, Ashima gives birth to a son (Kal Penn). The basic premise of the film is this: How will this child survive in American society with a ...

It's a film that just, when I read the book, possessed me like a fever and I dropped everything. Nine months later I was shooting. And I feel very pleased that at the end of the film, I love every frame, every piece of music, every sound,” said Mira. The author of The Namesake, Jhumpa Lahiri, was there with her family for the premiere. “The only thing I would change is that when I was on the set one day, is that my daughter appears quite prominently. My son was in my lap and he was asleep so he didn't quite make it into the camera. So just for my own familial harmony over the years, it would have been nice to have a little shot of my son. But I'm sure he'll understand when he gets older why he wasn't ...
