Nate Kerr: Christ, History and Apocalyptic: the politics of Christian missi
2008-10-24 04:06:00
As a regular contributor to our discussions, Nate Kerr is well known to F&T readers. His forthcoming book Christ, History and Apocalyptic is one of the most exciting theological works I’ve read in quite some time. This is mind-expanding, first-rate stuff: it’s both a brilliant critical reading of modern theology (moving through Troeltsch, Barth, Hauerwas and Yoder), and a compelling constructive argument for an “apocalyptic” approach to Christian theology. Really, it could be read as a kind of manifesto: it points the way towards a new way of doing theology, and towards a distinctively theological way of thinking about history and the church’s mission. The book will soon be released in the UK by SCM (as part of their new Veritas series), and in the US by Cascade (as part of their new Theopolitical Visions series).Nate has kindly given me permission to post an excerpt here. So let me whet your appetite – this sample is from Chapter 5, entitled “John Howard Yoder: T...

Nisbath and Lineage of Spiritual Transmission
2008-05-17 02:15:00
1.The Quran indicates one should 'enter houses by their doors' (2:189). The door of the Quran is the Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace, not only because he was the one through whom the Divine Revelation was transmitted to the rest of humanity, but also because he is the one whom God invested with the most knowledge concering the different levels of significance and meaning inherent in the Quran. The door to the Prophet is love. In fact, the Prophet, himself, has said that, 'no one can complete one's faith until the Prophet becomes dearer to an individual that the person's family and all of mankind.'The door to loving someone who loves the Prophet is 'nisbath'. Nisbath is the bond of spiritual resonance which inclines a seeker to learn from a given servant of God, while simultaenously inclining that servant of God to teach the seeker who manifests signs of such nisbath. The door to nisbath is adab or spiritual etiquetee. The door to adab is initiation into a silsilah or 'line...

At this time, there are three fatalities to count from the storm system. Come to think about, Rochester weather isn’t so bad after all. Addendum: Update from, New York Times: A wide swath of thunderstorms packing tornadoes, high winds and hail swept through the South on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, killing at least 48 people, injuring at least 100 more and leaving authorities searching for others who may be trapped in rubble. 911 - 2.3 Trillion Dollars Missing
2008-02-06 18:34:00
On September 10, 2001, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld admitted that the Pentagon had lost, by the estimate he chose to use for his speech, 2.3 trillion dollars. Many of you good readers know about this, and are asking where the money went. That's a good question, but what really intrigues me is: Where did it come from? If you add up the entire US defense budgets from 1996 to 2001, you only come up with circa 1.6 trillion. Yet, according to Rummy, not only was that much money lost, but an ADDITIONAL 700 BILLION dollars has disappeared. Remember, we're talking about 2.3 trillion dollars "missing."

I didn’t vow to fulfil Benazir’s mission: Nawaz
2008-02-06 10:43:00
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief and former premier Nawaz Sharif has denied saying he would complete Benazir Bhutto’s mission. Talking to a private TV channel here on Tuesday, Sharif, however, expressed solidarity with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Nawaz said he “had made the mistake of his life” by promoting Musharraf to the army chief in 1998. According to Online News, he said it was President Pervez Musharraf and not “the insignificant election commissioner” who had rejected his nomination papers for the February elections. (ANI)

Tapped calls of suspect terrorists admissible as evidence in UK courts
2008-02-06 10:34:00
The Gordon Brown Government has reportedly cleared a proposal  that will allow intelligence outfits -- MI5 and MI6 to tap phones of suspect terrorists and present them as evidence in a court. The historic change is significant in that Britain and Ireland are currently the only nations that do not allow wire-taps to be used in this way. According to The Sun, Brown will accept the findings of a review of intercept evidence he ordered last year. This hugely controversial step has been strongly opposed by security chiefs. They have warned that once phone tap evidence is allowed, terrorists will be able to work out how it was obtained, and will then be able to devise new methods of communicating. Shadow Home Secretary David Davis backed the plan, saying: “This sounds like a breakthrough. Former Labour Home Secretary David Blunkett warned of “major challenges” and said intercept evidence was not a substitute for pre-charge detention. (ANI)

Ontario commissioner says mixed martial arts is illegal under Criminal Code

The hearing will start at 9am and will go all day. If you are not driving with our bus/carpool you can show up whenever you want. However, we'd like people there at 9am; and if you want to testify you need to turn in your speaker slip in the morning. It's difficult ...

Drug reduces HIV transmission through breastfeeding
2008-02-05 09:10:00
A new study conducted in India, Ethiopia and Uganda has found that nevirapine, an antiretroviral drug that has already been used in developing countries to prevent newborns from getting HIV from their infected mothers during childbirth, significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission during breastfeeding.   In the study presented at the 2008 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunities Infections in Boston, researchers at The Johns Hopkins University and colleagues in Ethiopia, India and Uganda gave infants aged 8 to 42 days nevirapine once a day.   They found that the risk of HIV transmission induced by breastfeeding was halved at 6 weeks of age.   The decrease occurred in comparison to a single dose of nevirapine given to infants at birth, the current standard of care. At 6 months of age, the risk of postnatal HIV infection or death in infants who received the six-week regimen was almost one-third less than the risk for infants given only a single dose.   Br...

Scientists explain why lower transmission may increase dengue
2008-02-05 09:10:00
A scientist duo has come up with an explanation for why efforts to lower the transmission of dengue virus in Thailand have failed to reduce the life-threatening form of the infection.   It seemed that the number of dengue deaths had increased despite such efforts, said Duke University Biology Professor Katia Koelle and graduate student Yoshiro Nagao at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine.   The researchers analysed dengue infection data from Thailand going back to 1981, and constructed a set of epidemiological models to explain why this strange pattern.   Koelle and Nagao say that the reason why dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases increased, despite a decrease in transmission rates due to extensive mosquito control efforts, lies in the way the body builds immunity to the four strains of dengue, which is the world's most common mosquito-borne viral disease.   The researchers knew that victims could not get re-infected with a dengue strain they had al...

PACCAR to use urea injection and EGR to clean up emissions
2008-02-05 00:05:00
Most people probably don't know the name PACCAR but they've surely seen Peterbilt, Kenworth and DAF. Those are three of the biggest medium and heavy duty truck brands on the market . The smoky exhaust from those big diesel trucks has surely annoyed most drivers and pedestrians at some point in time. PACCAR produces trucks under those brands and others that are used around the world. The company has announced plans to meet 2010 diesel emissions requirements by adding exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and urea injection systems (SCR) to their engines. The 2010 standard will require an eighty percent reduction in NOx emissions compared to 2007 levels, so PACCAR is following the same path chosen by a number of automakers including Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Hyundai-Kia. PACCAR is getting suppliers lined up to ensure that urea solution is readily available to operators when the new engines roll out in 2010.[Source: PACCAR]
