Israel to install AA missile defense on airliners.
2008-04-24 23:26:00
According to reports, Israel will be outfitting its airliners with defense systems designed to thwart missile attacks. The defense will probably be a system with flares, designed to distract an incoming missile's heat-seeking mechanism. It will be installed first on planes flying to destinations considered dangerous, i.e Africa and parts of Asia. The need for a missile defense system was recognized in 2002, when an Israeli passenger jet was targeted after takeoff by Islamic militants using shoulder-fired missiles outside Mombasa, Kenya. The rockets missed, but spurred Israel to find a way to protect its airliners with a defense similar to that already used by its air force. (The picture does not show an Israeli airliner, anyone reasonably familiar with aircraft can see that, we just wanted to show you what firing a massive bunch of protective flares looks like.) Then imagine this over airports all over the world...

Has NATO Really Endorsed U.S. Plans for Missile Defense?
2008-04-04 23:47:00
Friday?s media reports out of Bucharest suggest a major triumph for President Bush on missile defense. According to the Washington Post: President Bush advanced his plans Thursday to build a controversial missile defense shield in Eastern Europe by winning the unanimous backing of NATO allies and sealing a deal with the Czech Republic to build a radar facility for the system on its soil. Bush?s success in winning over once-skeptical European governments bolsters his position heading into talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has denounced the shield as the start of a new arms... Russia to US: Scrap Missile Defense
2008-03-27 23:20:00
Russia's foreign minister laid out a tough negotiating position on America's missile defense plans Thursday ahead of a visit by President Bush, saying the best solution would be for the U.S. to scrap the idea altogether. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russian experts were studying the latest U.S. plans?intended to ease Russian concerns about the proposed missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic?but he reaffirmed Moscow's call for Washington to drop them. "We are convinced that the best way to assuage Russia's concerns ... will be to abandon such plans and turn to a truly collective project," Lavrov told reporters. Bush, Putin to discuss Cold War treaties next month: report And what are you giving us in return?  You're already building a nuclear plant in Iran.  How about this?  We abandon the missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, and you drop all present and future plans for nuclear reactors in Iran. It's win-win really.  If Iran can't bu...

The Center's senior military fellow Gen. Robert Gard and director John Isaacs released today a phenomenal report on America's missile defense program. The analysis covers Congressional, scientific, governmental, and military support for and opposition to a national missile defense program from Reagan's push in 1983 to the present administration. The authors conclude that no elements of the ground-based system should be deployed until they are proven effective at accomplishing their mission, and capable of protecting the United States. 2008-03-18 14:40:00
Center Scoville Fellow and Nukes of Hazard contributer Kingston Reif published an excellent letter to the editor today in the Washington Post in response to comments about Russian perceptions of the American planned third site in Europe. Full text provided here: In the March 13 op-ed "Moscow's Missile Gambit," Robert Joseph and J.D. Crouch II said the United States should proceed with plans to place missile interceptors and their supporting radar systems in Europe regardless of Russian opposition. 2008-03-14 21:52:00
After Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's visit to Washington this week, the Bush administration, though still far from a final deal, is one step closer to having its third missile defense site in Europe. The FY 2008 Defense Authorization bill required before any funding was provided for the site that the Polish and Czech governments approve the deal and that the US Congress must have 45 days to object to its components, and that the Secretary of Defense submit a report to Congress certifying that the interceptors work. Ballistic Missile Defense: An Update
2008-03-05 01:16:00

Bush?s Missile Defense Plan May Not Fly in Europe

The White House’s plan to expand the U.S. ballistic missile defense shield to Europe is running into difficulties as the clock ticks down on George W. Bush’s presidency. National Missile Defense
2007-12-27 18:14:00
Iran announced that by 2015 it will have a missile capable of reaching the United States. To counter this threat, President Bush strongly advocates the development of the National Missile Defense system (NMD) that would entail interceptor bases in Europe. The network has alarmed Vladimir Putin because its existence could negate the deterrence threat of Russia's nuclear arsenal. Domestically, many question the feasibility of the NMD and whether it is in the spirit of the seemingly forgotten large scale disarmament.

There was no mention, for instance, of Iran or the recently released NIE on Iran?s nuclear weapons programs. The debate (transcript here) instead focused mainly on domestic issues and the few references to nuke and nonpro issues were couched in those terms. New Sparks in Missile Defense
2007-11-30 06:34:00
Several new issues have arisen regarding the controversial third missile defense site planned for Europe since Nukes of Hazard's last summary post on the subject. Two weeks ago, a senior Russian general announced a potential retaliatory measure to the site. The following week, Rick Lehner, spokesperson for the Missile Defense Agency, critically responded to comments by Representative Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) on their purpose. And this week, Russia claimed that U.S. proposals aimed at cooperation between the two nations did not live up to the plans that had emerged from earlier discussions. ... 2007-10-08 21:45:00
Last week, Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) attempted to amend the Senate Defense Appropriations bill to re-insert funding for the "space-based test bed" -- preliminary research into the development of three or more prototype weaponized satellites designed to intercept ballistic missiles launched from the ground. Kyl's case for funding the project was that it was a step towards the development of active defenses for American satellites against anti-satellite weapons, and that it was not necessarily a missile defense project. However, an examination of the budget request for the test bed casts serious... [This is a content summary only. Click on the above link for the full post.]

Russian Bomber Flights: The Real Cost of Missile Defense?

Last week, British fighters flew to intercept eight Russian bombers approaching British air space in what the Times of London called "the biggest aerial confrontation between the two countries since the end of the Cold War." Aerial starring matches like this were standard during the Cold War, but had been relatively unknown since then. In August, Putin resumed the practice of regular patrols over international waters by nuclear-capable Tu-95 bombers, leading to several incidents like this one involving Britain, the United States, Norway, and Canada. Missile Defense Strains U.S.-Russia Ties
2007-09-16 17:04:00
Vladimir Putin must at times feel like he is living in one of his worst nightmares with the former Soviet satellite countries eager to join NATO and offering the US space at former Soviet military bases. Poland and Czechoslovakia are just two of the latest east European countries to woo America for a military presence in their territory. The bases in question would be for anti-ballistic missile hardware ostensibly to guard against Iran. Putin feels it to be a direct threat to RussiaÂ’s nuclear forces. And what he sees as possibly an equal threat is being drawn into another cold war style contest of military hardware buildup in the missile and anti-missile fields. And this is a contest he knows he can not successfully compete in. The old Soviet Union managed nuclear parity with the west by virtually bankrupting the rest of the country to pay for it. Putin knows he has nowhere near the resources nor the political clout to do so today. Russia has always had an anti missile shield that ...
