The missionaries and the Cannibals
2008-06-02 15:20:00 Three missionaries and three cannibals come to a river and find a boat that holds two. If the cannibals ever outnumber the missionaries on either bank, the missionaries will be eaten. How shall they cross? I was very excited, when I found a flash version of this problem, which is popular in many AI (Artifical Intelligences) classes. I used to play around with it using 3 pennies and 3 quarters, but this flash version is much more fun. Just follow the link and give it a try. This is one of my favorite problems by far. Read More...

Afghan clerics demand prevention of missionaries
2008-01-06 08:32:00 As always, religion never fails to make a bad situation worse: Afghanistan's Islamic council has told President Hamid Karzai to stop foreign aid groups from converting locals to Christianity and also demanded the reintroduction of public executions. The council, an influential group but without binding authority, is made up of Islamic clergy and ulema (scholars) from various parts of Afghanistan and made the warning in a statement during a meeting with Karzai on Friday. ... "The council is concerned about the activities of some ... missionary and atheistic organs and considers such acts against Islamic sharia (law), the constitution, and political stability," said a copy of the statement obtained by Reuters. "If not prevented, God forbid, catastrophe will emerge, which will not only destabilize the country, but the region and the world." So, no missionaries and "atheistic organs." In other words, the only thing good enough for Muslim clerics would be aid organizations made up ent...

Orthodox Missionaries in Alaska
2007-12-20 19:24:00 There is a significant population of Orthodox Christians in the state of Alaska, and this largely has to do with the efforts of Russian Orthodox missionaries in the state in the mid-1800s. In the library at RTS earlier this week, I saw the book, Alaskan Missionary Spirituality, on the shelf between a number of other Orthodox-related books. I checked it out and paged through it over the last few days. It caught my eye because I spent a short time in the state in 2005, and pretty much fell in love with it. Also, in the city of Sitka I visited St. Michael's Cathedral, where I first learned about the Orthodox presence in the state. The original missionaries came from the Valaam Monastery originally in Finland (now Russian Karelia), and set out to start a mission in traditional Orthodox fashion:From the beginning the goal of the Valaam Mission to Alaska was to…establish an American Church, respecting and employing the languages and artistic culture of Alaska within the community of...

MISSIONARIES ARE AWESOME
2007-09-26 08:36:00 "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" Romans 10:14-15I love missionaries. I love their heart for lost people. I love the fact that they are willing to give up so much to "go and make disciples." Simply put ... missionaries are my heroes! I try every Wednesday to have a special prayer for those doing foreign mission works. Some missionary's blogs I love to keep up with are:Cory & Toni Burns - Guadalajara, MexicoJames & Erin Henderson - Mexico City, MexicoTim & Kim Rush - Guadalajara, MexicoAdventures in Missions (and about 50 AIM Students) - Lubbock, Texas and all over the world.Philip & Jaime Murphy - American SamoaDennis & Theresa Wilson - Cozumel, MexicoBrandon & Katie Price - Mariupol, Ukra...

They'll be there to discuss strategies, goals and perspectives on church planting. "With a new couple on the team [Tim and Rebecca Peterson] it'll be a great time to refocus and even re-evaluate some of our previous strategies," wrote Lisa. Today, Elias and M'Liss will undergo full evaluations to see where they are in fluency. Lisa will also be evaluated. "My evaluation won't be quite the same … They want to check out that my discourse analysis is finished -- this is important for translation. I'm praying that they give me the green light to move officially into full-time translation," she wrote. Right now, working on learning the language is difficult. There are four families in the v...

2007-08-10 03:11:00 Author: Eric Subject: Bible Surplus Earmarked for Europe's MissionariesPosted: Thu Aug 09, 2007 9:11 pm (GMT -4) Bible Surplus Earmarked for Europe's Missionaries Europe (MNN) ― Europe has followed a secular path and, in some places, apathy is slowly strangling the church to death. Recent statistics show that roughly 21-percent of Europeans feel that religion is "very important." The conflict between the continent's faith roots and it's current pull toward humanism and atheism has broadened to a rift. As people respond to the rift by seeking distraction, it has grown into a void that's left the door wide open for Islam. The challenge of the field has many believers responding to the call. But once they get to Europe, they are faced with isolation, discouragement and social discrimination. Sometimes that's compounded by lack of resources. Christian Resources International's Fred Palmerton says that's why they're looking at a fall campaign ...
News & Current Events :: Further Fervor: Missionaries Go From East to West
2007-08-04 17:47:00 Author: Eric Subject: Further Fervor: Missionaries Go From East to WestPosted: Sat Aug 04, 2007 11:47 am (GMT -4) Further Fervor: Missionaries Go From East to West LESLIE HOOK The recent kidnapping of South Korean Christians in Afghanistan highlights an overlooked fact: Asian missionaries are everywhere, and today they're often found in some of the world's most dangerous hotspots. Nowhere has this hit home harder than in South Korea, where the Afghan incident has triggered widespread soul searching. On July 19, 23 South Korean aid workers were kidnapped in the central Ghazni province by Taliban militants. The pastor, Bae Hyung-kyu, was shot dead on July 25; five days later, 29-year-old Shim Sung-min was killed and dumped on a roadside. As I write this, the rest of the group is still in Taliban custody. Although only about 30% of South Korea's 49 million citizens are Christian, the country is second only to the U.S. in the number of missionaries it sends abroad. As of l...

2007-07-29 02:26:00 Author: Eric Subject: Korean Missionaries Draw Fire at HomePosted: Sat Jul 28, 2007 8:26 pm (GMT -4) Korean Missionaries Draw Fire at Home JENNIFER VEALE With the fate of 22 South Korean hostages in Afghanistan still uncertain, the hostage crisis is finally forcing South Korea's Christians, the world's second largest group of proselytizers after Americans, to re-think their evangelical ambitions. Since the start of the hostage crisis last week, when 23 Korean Christian volunteers were captured by Taliban insurgents on a road south of Kabul, the Seoul government has had to ask Korean bloggers to back off from online attacks on the hostages. Critics were particularly incensed by photos posted of some of the young women missionaries posing in front of an Afghanistan travel advisory sign at Seoul's Incheon International Airport. Family members of the missionaries - as well as members of the Sammeul Community Church south of Seoul, which sent the mission - also issued public ...
Please pray for the kidnapped Korean Christian Missionaries
2007-07-25 16:16:00 Eddy Liu Request I’ve just read an article about 23 christians being kidnapped by the Taliban. 1 was killed in the process. It’s hard to imagine what kind of suffering they have to endure. I saw a picture of them found on a website and most of them are women. It’s impossible for me to imagine what horrible things would be done to them and how it would effect their spiritual walk. Please pray for those people. Hope they can get out of it safely. Afterall they were doing God’s work. Pray for them please.

2007-06-14 23:13:00 Author: Eric Subject: Lessons Help Missionaries, Nalu PeoplePosted: Thu Jun 14, 2007 5:13 pm (GMT -4) Lessons Help Missionaries, Nalu People Guinea (MNN) -- Young girls of the Nalu tribe are learning to play volleyball for the first time. Missionaries Hans and Miriam Jensen of New Tribes Mission are teaching them, and learning about the language and culture at the same time. On an average day the girls spend most of their time pulling water, gathering wood for fires, pounding rice and caring for their younger siblings. Playing volleyball is a time for them to have fun and they are learning the game quickly. The Jensens have are learning more and more about the Nalu culture which is helpful as Marion helps teach women how to read and write. This is a challenge since the Nalu women have never held a pencil or learned the alphabet. During their reading lessons, the women are able to listen to a Bible lesson on CD. Many women were unable to meet for a while so that they...

Christian Missionaries: Curse on India
2007-05-01 23:02:00 Christian Missionaries is a disease on India and some VHP type doctors must wanted to fix it. Yesterday few guys attacked on a Principal cum pastor for encouraging school children to eat meat, Principle is seriously injured and hospitalized. This allegation sounds stupid but these missionaries are doing their business very well by providing them some money and job to poor Indians in lieu of their religion. My favorite fast food corner's owner is also converted from Muslim to Christian because missionaries paid him Rs. 7,00,000 and look he is happy now. Shall all poor Indians adopt Christianity as our religion is unable to fulfill our desires, then 60 percent Indians will be Christian, no matter who you are Hindu OR Muslim. Look at Kerala where you cant find any other religion except Christianity because of religion based bribe, I mean if anybody change its religion thats ok but its not fair to deal with money and job, like bring your old TV and get a new one, thats why Graham Stewar...

French 'missionaries' of radical islam
2007-03-29 15:45:00 A French citizen, studying Arabic at the Dammaj Islamic institute in Yemen, was killed, and another Franco-Algerian wounded, Sunday when Shi'i rebels attacked their college, which adheres to the Salafist tendency, a fundamentalist version of Sunni Islam. Like them, several hundred French citizens "study" at Islamic universities in the Middle East. From religious indoctrination to armed action, their slide into the "holy war" in Iraq often follows the same thread. At Dammaj, these two Frenchmen were guarding the Islamic institute during clashes with Shi'i rebels, who are combating the Yemeni Army in this remote area in the North of the country. One of them was killed, together with a British national. The wounded Franco-Algerian underwent treatment yesterday and was in "a stable condition," according to the Quai d'Orsay [French Foreign Ministry]....On the outskirts of Riyadh, not far from the French college, the Al-Imam University is one of these jihadist factories. 2007-03-10 07:01:00 Author: Eric Subject: Pray For New Orleans & Missionaries Posted: Sat Mar 10, 2007 1:01 am (GMT -5) I just wanted to get the word out that New Orleans is still a disaster zone where many are still without basic physical necessities. This frequently slips my thought process and I am only posting this now because I am leaving in seven hours to help out over there. I was there last September and really got thrown for a loop. This will be a great trip for the group I am going with. Please pray God blesses our labor, (all the missionaries that will be there) and that the city sees the work of His hands in all this mess. I also would like to request prayer for workers to help rehabilitate people's lives, even if the city can never be restored. Our work, brothers and sisters, is greatly appreciated over there. I just pray God is glorified through it all. Thank you. -Eric
