Mitosis and Meiosis

Interphase precedes both mitosis and meiosis and is the period between cell divisions during which time the chromosomes replicate and the chromosomes are not visible (loosely packed). During interphase, two pairs of centrioles lie next to each other, just outside the nucleus. Mitosis is a process where in, one parent cell gives rise to two identical daughter cells. Mitosis can be divided into four stages: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase. Prophase: Chromosomes (two identical copies) condense, each chromosome has two arms and each copy of chromosome is called Chromatid. Spindle fibers form at centriole and centriole begin to separate. In addition, nuclear membrane disappears. A short period just before metaphase, called prometaphase, comprises movement of centrioles to opposite ends of the cell and attachment of spindle fibers to each of the chromatids. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up along an imaginary line, called the metaphase plate that divides the cell into two. The s...

I recently caught wind of Openlearn, at Open University, which is a UK university that is dedicated to distance learning. Apparently started in 1969, and hosting part-time students who will received real degrees, the OU’s teaching quality was listed as the fifth best in the UK. “Now anyone can access free ...

Mitosis means the replication of and the division of a cell’s nucleus. These day — the usage of cell phones is multiplying rapidly. Today  38 % of US consumers are watching shows online, 36% use their cell phones as an entertainment device, and 45% are creating web content. At least that’s what a new suvey from ...

Mitosis and Meiosis

Mitosis is the biological process involving chromosomal duplication and nuclear division. Mitosis is usually followed by cytokinesis, whereby the watery environment inside a cell, known as the cytoplasm, and cell membrane divide. Two identical cells are generated, each having the same number of chromosomes as the parental cell. Somatic cells (meaning any cell that is ...
Visualizing the Stages of Mitosis

Via a Hungarian Polish science blog that kindly links to me often enough, I came across a great YouTube clip describing the stages of mitosis with beautiful graphics. While I can’t understand Hungarian Polish at all, Miggawki looks like a very nice science blog, with interests rather comparable to my own. The videoclip ...
