Number of U.S. Computers Accessing the Internet Via Mobile Broadband Soars
2008-03-10 14:52:00
comScore a leader in measuring the digital world, released the results of a study of U.S. Internet usage via mobile broadband. The study examined the usage and characteristics of mobile broadband users through data collected from computers where Internet access via mobile broadband Internet service providers (ISPs) occurred.Mobile broadband employs cellular networks, where users pay subscriptions for access and the connection is made with a PC card, built-in adapter, or connections can be tethered via a cell-phone or PDA, and is different than Wi-Fi access, which is predicated on the availability of short range ?hot spots? where access fees often apply incrementally for each connection. In 2007, Verizon and Sprint accounted for the majority of the mobile broadband market. AT&T has announced it will increase its coverage in 2008.The number of computers using mobile broadband technology to access the Internet grew by 154 percent in Q4 2007 versus the same period in 2006.?Though mo...

In particular, mobile broadband shows a significantly higher presence on work computers (59 percent) than home/personal computers (41 percent).Mobile broadband is also somewhat of a luxury, skewing strongly toward the highest-income households:Those making at least $100,000 were 37 percent more ...

Choosing the perfect mobile phone or mobile broadband deal
2008-02-28 10:42:00
It can be minefield out there, trying to pick the perfect phone. So, let me help you make the decision. Let me help you get it clear, in your head, exactly what you want from a phone, and therefore, what will be the perfect phone for you.First up, you have to ask yourself: what is you want from your phone? Do you want a camera phone, to snap away for hours? Or do you want a music phone, to replace your mp3 player? Or maybe you want a smartphone, a phone that will do everything except give you a back rub after a hard day's work? Or maybe, just maybe, you want a simple, basic phone, that will just give you the calls and texts you need, without all the frills anbd frivolous bits you don't need! So, once you've decided exactly why you want a mobile phone, then you need to sit down and think about what spec you're looking at. It's all well and good saying, 'I want a camera phone,' and then going out and buying the first one you see. You need to compare costs versus features. So, if...
Mobile Broadband Service for Qatar
2008-02-20 12:11:00
Qtel have launched a new mobile broadband service which will enable users to access the internet via their laptop from anywhere in Doha, Al Wakrah, Al Rayyan, Messaieed, Al Khor and Ras Laffan. To use the service laptop users need to buy a USB modem and data only SIM card, and then subscribe to a price plan, which varies from QAR 100 - QAR 300.The USB modem can be bought for QAR799, although laptop users who already have the appropriate devices will not need to purchase it.Qtel has stated that speeds will be similar to home ADSL in Qatar - i.e. slow!In other telecommunications news, eight companies have expressed an interest in bidding for a second fixed line licence. Whether this will make a huge difference to internet connection speeds remains to be seen - a Qtel engineer told me that internet problems were due to infrastructure problems caused by problems with poor quality material, and could not be easily solved.Nevertheless, given the huge unpopularity of Qtel, when there are so...

Wi-Fi versus mobile broadband - WI-FI...
2008-02-05 09:03:00
Wi-Fi versus mobile broadband - WI-FI and other short range mobile internet access solutions have served customers well. But have they also served their time? Face it. The phrase "I'll shoot it through when I get back to the office" already sounds old. To remain competitive as a road warrior, business data must be immediately accessible and presentations need to be powerful, persuasive and most of all – on hand. Founder and director of marketing and PR consultancy FRANCH-EYES, Louise Bernays, says the success of her business hinges on her fast responses to clients. "In my line of work with clients spread all over the country, I need email and internet access at the drop of a hat,” says Ms Bernays. "I can't afford to have my clients wait until I get back to my PC, and respond a week late.” The case for mobile broadband per se may be easy to make but – as with any rapidly growing new technology – which service to select can muddy th...

Featured Link: http://www.iht.com/articles/200-7/12/02/technology/wireless03.p-hpFEMTOCELL is the keyword in the next generation of the Mobile Phone Industry. Its coming and in a big way perhaps. Femtocell provides for the indoor usage and links the Mobile Phone wirelessly with a fixed line Broadband Internet connection, thus enhances users' speed and reliability. Femtocells will have to compete with a like service, which links mobile phone networks with the fixed-line Internet via a Wi-Fi access points. Many of the commuters need to use Skype or Jaxtr, Jangl etc or the simply a fixed line phone just for the sake of cheap calls or the reason that they use them from the Home, but with the Femtocell they could use expensive mobiles with the help of fixed lines or broadband with cheap calling rates in the industry.
