The new era of mobile content broadcasting and distribution
2007-11-24 17:44:00
It is amazing to see how television broadcasting has changed over past 10-15 years. Earlier, we used to watch anything that was dished out to us on Doordarshan, be it Nukkad, be it films division cartoons (do you remember those?) or Sunday serials and bland evening movies. And today, even with 100 channels beaming on our TV sets, we crib about lack of choices. And to fulfill this demand (do we really need more channels?) there are hundreds of new channels slated to be launched.

Google Plans Search Service for Mobile Content
2007-07-17 17:37:00
Google Inc. is developing a new search service for cellphones that will help consumers find and buy ringtones, games and other mobile content as the Internet company pushes more deeply into wireless, people familiar with the matter say.Google already offers cellphone users a version of its popular engine for searching the Web. Now the company wants to go beyond just looking up Web pages, effectively becoming a gateway for finding and paying for mobile media content. With the new system, users would search for a piece of content -- say, a U2 ringtone -- and get back a list of providers as well as links enabling them to easily purchase the material. Eventually, Google would charge companies for high placement in the search results, much the way it offers "sponsored links" on computer Web searches, the people familiar with the plans say.The company has been working for months with content providers -- including large entertainment companies and smaller mobile-media aggregators -- to ind...

The trend of creating niche services for the purpose of helping consumers use their cell phones to find mobile content is really taking off with new developments in the mobile space. It’s a natural step for the giant search engine.Moving a bit into the space of mobile providers themselves, Google is broadening the portals through which consumers can access and purchase content for their cell phones. It’s far more important for companies to focus on vertical search for mobile devices, rather than a general web search from ...

Mobile Content - Where's it going?
2003-08-14 12:59:00
There's an interesting article on The Failure and Future of Mobile Content in Brighthand by Ted Ladd, in which he describes four popular myths about why he thinks it's failed so far, and where it's going in the future - although as someone writing this article on a pda on a train, which I'll ftp via IRDA and a mobile phone using GSM/GPRS, I'm not entirely sure what he means by failure... The "myths" are: 1. It's a technical problem 2. It's a management problem 3. It's an economics problem, or no cash post-crash 4. It's a bad experience Now I'd argue with calling most of those myths, but the second half of the article is more interesting. Here he discusses the future of mobile content and describes four generations of mobile content First generation: Same but smaller Second generation: Alerts Third generation: Exclusively mobile Fourth generation: The Disappearance of Mobile Content A breakdown of these generations is reasonably straigh...
