ZUMOBI AND SQUACE: READ THE MOBILE WEB IN SQUARES
2008-06-05 06:01:00 The widgets story has always locked icons and links in a race to recover your most-wanted data quickly and accurately. When it comes to cell phones, there's been no clear winner, only trade-offs. Mobile browsers like Opera Mini and Skyfire promise rich desktop search augmented by straightforward links to favored sites, while well-designed widgets applications like Yahoo Go supply clear paths to tightly-focused content, some of it user-customized. The most recent update improves Zumobi's speed and accepts personalized tiles of RSS feeds.(Credit: Zumobi) Seattle-based Zumobi and Swedish newcomer Squace are two companies I spoke to this week that are pitching icons over links. On Wednesday, Zumobi announced a version update that gives the graphics-rich widget app a performance-based tummy tuck; technically, a rewritten threading architecture. The efforts have paid off. Now, zooming into a widget "tile" from the 16 square interface produces much smoother, faster rendering th...

Links Matter More on the Mobile Web
2008-06-03 23:12:00 Natural Search and Mobile SEO Blog – It?s true that there?s currently very little cross-linking on the mobile Web. This is often cited by those who argue that linking is relatively unimportant in mobile SEO. However, it seems to me just the opposite conclusion should be reached from the understanding of this fact: that a user would defy convention and link to a mobile site from a mobile site is a stronger signal of quality than a link from a desktop web site. It?s clear from the mobile search engine results pages (SERPs) that ... read more

Google CEO: Web 2.0 is overhyped and future lies in Mobile Web
2008-05-28 15:39:00 In a recent interview with FAZ a german site Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that according to him the next big wave in advertising is the mobile internet he also said that the web 2.0 architecture is not necessarily a revenue opportunity. Here are some excerpts from that long interviewWhere is the growth potential for Google? We have many more ideas about technology the most obvious large space of advertising is the mobile internet. Just take the success of the iPhone: It has the first really powerful web browser on a mobile device - and many more are still coming. Nokia has one coming, Blackberry has one and Motorola has one. They are all supposed to be released this year. By these products, the advertising gets more targeted because phones are personal. So targeted ads are possible. And that means the value of the ads will grow. The next big wave in advertising is the mobile internet.Video and display advertising? Eric Schmidt: A lot of opportunities are in video and display. But t...

The Mobile Web - Just the Beginning
2008-05-21 06:23:00 Searching Google for Le Web Mobile or "Le Web Mobile" you'll find some interesting though contradictory results: people claiming the mobile web is dead, explaining why it sucks, pleading to keep it open, selling software to make an application mobile web-friendly and finally also me: blogging on the web, on mobile technologies, being mobile and mobile entrepreneurship. What is it then, this controversial mobile web? Tony and Ajit over at Open Gardens define it as follows: "Your experience of preferred services on a restricted device."Check their site for an in-depth explanation of what they mean. Interestingly, the appreciation of this experience, since they wrote this piece in 2006, seems to have changed drastically: on April 23rd Russell Beattie of Mowser, a service that renders websites for use on mobiles, in a highly discussed interview, said that "the traffic never showed up, and what did show up was of questionable quality at best... It's not there now, and it won't be". (s...

Presentation on Nokia's Strategy and the future of mobile web
2008-05-05 20:00:00 There is lot of hype about the mobile web and how mobile is now the 4th screen after TV, Computer and Cinema Halls but there is lot of confusion regarding how this will happen and ways to take advantages of it. Nokia being the leader in mobile space has been the loudest champion of this cause according to them among Nokia users Two thirds are "storing and sharing communities of music" . Half are playing games, and half are browsing the web. The people who are leading this usage are, well, what Nokia calls 'Technology Leaders' - people who actively seek out new mobile apps and services. According to Nokia all over the world only 12% usage of phone is for voice and 37% for messaging. It is market insights like these that has led to Nokia 's launch of Ovi and here is embeded an interesting presentation from Nokia in which Nokia outlines its vision for the mobile web and Ovi delivered by Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, NokiaRelated Reads: ...

Mobile web, flop o no?

Nokia versus Google the battle of mobile web
2008-02-12 09:57:00 Once Google released its Android platform and openly said that the future focus is on mobile the final stone was set now Nokia views Google as a potential threat and it has begun an all out attack to protect its mobile turf. Nokia had already begun transforming into an internet services firm now it has announced a quartet of new handsets designed to more closely link global positioning systems (GPS) with the mobile Internet and has also also launched a global mobile advertising network both in direct competition to Google Maps and Google adwords for mobile. The major battleground for these two are going to be emerging economies like India where no of mobile users using the mobile web is greater than no. of P.C users and cell phone is fast becoming an Internet entry point of choice Businessweek while discussing this issue points outBoth companies are betting that where people are located will become an important part of how they use the Net. Nokia is trying to claim that arena with h...
Mobile Fair-Wireless fair set to stage mobile Web battle
2008-02-11 00:17:00 FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Cell phone makers, telecoms carriers and Internet groups are squaring up for a fight for dominance of the mobile Internet, finally ready for market after years of promises and hundreds of billions in investments. Wireless broadband is coming of age, making rivals of companies such as Nokia Oyj, Google Inc, Microsoft Corp and Apple Inc, who previously could afford to coexist relatively peacefully. Mobile networks are now capable of delivering the Internet as smoothly to a mobile phone as to a PC, with the clunky handsets, stuttering downloads and network jams of the recent past almost forgotten in many developed markets. And the scramble to capitalize on that opportunity will loom over all other business at next week's Mobile World Congress. "Web, Web, Web -- if you ain't walking onto the stand hand in hand with a Web guy you ain't no one," said Ben Wood, chief analyst at UK-based telecoms and IT research firm CCS Insight. The ou...

Mobile web cage fight in the making!
2008-02-09 01:25:00 The who’s who of significant and would be wireless web players are converging for the wireless fair next week. Many attendees who will come to exchange information and and engage in cooperation are soon to be combatants. With all of the hype we’ve seen over the years about the promise of a truly portable utility, the pieces are in place for an explosion of devices, apps and loosely defined open services. In every category there will be a bloody battle for supremacy. I’m predicting the dominant battle will be between Microsoft and Google. I’m also predicting that Google will quickly learn to embrace Microsoft’s no quarter tactics and that Ballmer will never attend burning man. And the scramble to capitalize on that opportunity will loom over all other business at next week’s Mobile World Congress. “Web, Web, Web — if you ain’t walking onto the stand hand in hand with a Web guy you ain’t no one,” said Ben Wood, chi...
