The report finds that Social networking is the most preferred activity of mobile phone users. Facebook is the most used social network in India, UK and other western countries while vKontakte is used by people in Russia and other CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent states). Even though Facebook is used by 42% of mobile users in India it only accounts for 27% of all pageviews. This can be attributed to the existence of alternative ways to use facebook like SMS, voice updates and USSD. Sunil Kamath, Director of Sales for India and SAARC, Opera Software raised a ...

Generation Y Chooses Mobile Web : Opera’s State Of The Mobile Web
2010-11-24 14:15:00
Every month, the good people at Opera release The State of The Mobile Web – a report that analyses key trends emerging across the mobile web around the world. The team also focuses on one specific trend in every month. This month they chose The lifestyle of Generation Y users/millennials of Opera Mini with respect to the Mobile Web. Between July and August, they surveyed over 300,000 users – and also held focus groups – to understand emerging trends among mobile web users. It consisted of 21 questions and revealed some genuinely interesting facts that challenge some of the oft reported factoids about the mobile internet. Before presenting their findings, Opera issued a disclaimer stating that Gen Y cannot be generalized or stereotyped..and that diversity  becomes clear when looking at consolidated responses across different countries. While it really is no surprise that Gen Y relied on the mobile web, the idea that smartphones will result in increased mobile inte...

Opera: Percentage Of Females Using Mobile Web Is Lowest In India
2010-09-02 13:55:00
Opera recently released its monthly State of the Mobile Web report for July, offering up in-depth insight into all facets of mobile Web usage worldwide. There is a remarkable discrepancy in the male or female split when it comes to mobile data usage. Only four percent of Indian users are female, which is very low compared to the worldwide average of 23 percent. The study thus revealed the gender gap in Indian mobile web usage is the widest in the world. As usual, this month’s report has some other surprising data too. In terms of growth worldwide, Asia showed the most substantial gains. From July 2009 to July 2010, page views in the top 10 countries in Southeast Asia increased by 238%, unique users increased by 205% and the amount of data transferred increased by 227%. Most interesting, however, is the finding that the number of woman surfing the mobile Web has grown more than 575% in the last two years, with South Africa and the United States having the highest percentage of f...

Mobile Web For All – IBM and IIT Combine For Research
2010-08-05 07:48:00
For some time now, we have been talking about how mobile phones are going to be an influencing factor in India’s digital revolution. So much as, that 3G is set to penetrate rural India by 2012. All said and done, how will the rural folks harness 3G without the know-how of how to use the internet, or to begin with, not being able to afford a phone that will allow them to use internet services. Keeping this in mind, IBM has joined hands with IIT to develop new mobile device interfaces that will be easy-to-use and easily understandable to semi-literate or illiterate people. The Industrial Design Centre (IDC) at IIT, Mumbai will be the department responsible for developing a mobile interface keeping in mind the so-called backward areas in India. This is a great initiative and will hopefully conjure up a mobile interface that will be useful for anyone regardless of where he is in the country. Power of Mobile Web India is a country where mobile connections have almost become a must....

Mobile Web Traffic Grows 4 Times In 2 Years : AdMob Metrics Report
2010-06-30 16:40:00
Amidst the usual comparisons of operating systems and the constant analysis of the biggies in the handset segment (Nokia, Apple etc), a few other things in the AdMob Mobile Metric report caught my attention. This graph basically shows a regional share of the traffic and requests that the company receives. Firstly the notable fact stated in the report is that globally the traffic has increased by 4 times in just 2 years. And this multiplication factor seems to have reduced only because of Africa because otherwise the rest of the world has increased its mobile activity for the company by 6 times. Also notice that Oceania has seen the steepest growth in the time span. Why is that? Is it due to a new marketing strategy that was being pursued in the region or does this growth represent a new surge or true growth in mobile spending and engagement in the region? The other noticeable fact is revealed in this bar graph published in the report. The difference in the choice of the phone...

Android Surpasses iPhone Sales In US, Emerges As The Leader In Mobile Web
2010-05-12 12:46:00
Inevitable happened and Android finally surpassed the iPhone sales in US in the first quarter of 2010, the numbers show Android captured a 28% market share in smart phone sales and iPhone secured a 21% share while Blackberry still maintains it’s leadership in Smartphone sales with 36% market share. The reasons behind Android emerging as leader are: 1) iPhone OS is just limited to Apple and it’s just one manufacturer and one network 2) iPhone offers only one model at a time, currently it is iPhone 3G 3) Android , on the other hand is available to any manufacturer and on any network interested in the OS. 4) Android is available in different price points and several variants ( I bought an Android phone, just because it was available in Samsung i5700 at a cheap price of 12,000 Rs) Apart from Android’s sleek integration with the Google apps, apparently the same reasons drove Android to emerge as the Leader in the Mobile web in US, while the  statistics from the Admob&...

2010-01-27 12:19:00
It was not so long ago when every internet expert predicted the rise of mobile dedicated social networks. It is quite surprising that dedicated mobile social networks has reached no where compared to online social networks who has clogged up even the mobile web with their presence. According to SMW report, Facebook is now the most surfed social network on mobile web with yearly rise of 600% whereas Twitter is witnessing the fastest growth(+2800%) in usages. This time Yahoo has decided to pull the plug from ‘Yahoo Go’ its mobile application. Yahoo has notified its users that ‘Yahoo Go’ will be discontinued from Jan,2010. Links Matter More on the Mobile Web
2008-06-03 23:12:00
Natural Search and Mobile SEO Blog – It?s true that there?s currently very little cross-linking on the mobile Web. This is often cited by those who argue that linking is relatively unimportant in mobile SEO. However, it seems to me just the opposite conclusion should be reached from the understanding of this fact: that a user would defy convention and link to a mobile site from a mobile site is a stronger signal of quality than a link from a desktop web site. It?s clear from the mobile search engine results pages (SERPs) that ... read more

Google CEO: Web 2.0 is overhyped and future lies in Mobile Web
2008-05-28 15:39:00
In a recent interview with FAZ a german site Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that according to him the next big wave in advertising is the mobile internet he also said that the web 2.0 architecture is not necessarily a revenue opportunity. Here are some excerpts from that long interviewWhere is the growth potential for Google? We have many more ideas about technology the most obvious large space of advertising is the mobile internet. Just take the success of the iPhone: It has the first really powerful web browser on a mobile device - and many more are still coming. Nokia has one coming, Blackberry has one and Motorola has one. They are all supposed to be released this year. By these products, the advertising gets more targeted because phones are personal. So targeted ads are possible. And that means the value of the ads will grow. The next big wave in advertising is the mobile internet.Video and display advertising? Eric Schmidt: A lot of opportunities are in video and display. The Mobile Web - Just the Beginning
2008-05-21 06:23:00
Searching Google for Le Web Mobile or "Le Web Mobile" you'll find some interesting though contradictory results: people claiming the mobile web is dead, explaining why it sucks, pleading to keep it open, selling software to make an application mobile web-friendly and finally also me: blogging on the web, on mobile technologies, being mobile and mobile entrepreneurship. What is it then, this controversial mobile web? Tony and Ajit over at Open Gardens define it as follows: "Your experience of preferred services on a restricted device."Check their site for an in-depth explanation of what they mean. Interestingly, the appreciation of this experience, since they wrote this piece in 2006, seems to have changed drastically: on April 23rd Russell Beattie of Mowser, a service that renders websites for use on mobiles, in a highly discussed interview, said that "the traffic never showed up, and what did show up was of questionable quality at best... It's not there now, and it won't be". (s...

Presentation on Nokia's Strategy and the future of mobile web
2008-05-05 20:00:00
There is lot of hype about the mobile web and how mobile is now the 4th screen after TV, Computer and Cinema Halls but there is lot of confusion regarding how this will happen and ways to take advantages of it. Nokia being the leader in mobile space has been the loudest champion of this cause according to them among Nokia users Two thirds are "storing and sharing communities of music" . Half are playing games, and half are browsing the web. The people who are leading this usage are, well, what Nokia calls 'Technology Leaders' - people who actively seek out new mobile apps and services. According to Nokia all over the world only 12% usage of phone is for voice and 37% for messaging. It is market insights like these that has led to Nokia 's launch of Ovi and here is embeded an interesting presentation from Nokia in which Nokia outlines its vision for the mobile web and Ovi delivered by Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, NokiaRelated Reads: ...

Mobile web, flop o no?
2008-04-17 15:29:00
