First DOCSIS 3.0 Modems Could Be $100
2007-12-13 23:59:00
Initial Wave of Products to Be More Expensive Than Anticipated The first wave of cable’s next-generation cable modems, which promise downloads up to 160 megabits per second, are currently in the middle of certification testing by CableLabs and should be ready for early deployments in 2008. But as the ship dates near for the initial modems that use CableLabs’ Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification 3.0, it’s becoming clearer that DOCSIS 3.0 modems will be more expensive than perhaps previously anticipated. John Sweeney, Scientific Atlanta director of product strategy and management, estimated that the street price of a 3.0 modem will be around $100, adding that quantity has a large effect on the per-unit price. Current DOCSIS 2.0 modems cost an average of $65 to $70, according to research firm In-Stat. “It’s not the $10-to-$20 delta [between 2.0 and 3.0] the cable operators were encouraging the industry to hit,†Sweeney said. DOCSIS 3.0 delivers higher bandwidth ...
4,000 Newton Modems Fall Like Dominoes
2007-11-30 08:17:00
A video from 1996 at Newton just resurfaced after years of obscurity. Basically, the erstwhile Apple division had 4,000 spare modems for the PDA that they just had to get rid of. Soon, a spectacular display was planned. Over at MacLife, Maurice Sharp, a former Newton Engineer, explained what happened… I remember making this video… the ...
4,000 Newton modems tumble on video
2007-11-27 20:59:00
Decidedly silly, but we love a bit of crazy domino fun here at MY iTablet, and it’s even better when the dominoes themselves are actually tiny totems of Apple heritage.  It seems that on an unstressed day back in 1996 part of the Apple Newton team decided to put around 4,000 “surplus” modems for the ...
100MBPS cable modems coming in ‘08. Will your provider deploy them?
2007-11-24 18:01:00
We may have a small bandwidth war in the making depending on what cable system operators do or do not do with it. Cable Labs now has DOCSIS 5 modems from 5 manufacturers for certification testing. The conservative estimate for the modems capability as a deployed service is 100MPS down, with less going back up the line. The technology has the potential for 160MBPS downloads with 120MBPS up. Cable ISPs currently use DOCSIS 1.1, which has been “good enough” in the past. Unfortunately, when compared to fiber, DOCSIS 1.1 lacks in the speed department. DOCSIS 3.0 has the potential to drastically change that, with download speeds of up to 160Mbps and uploads of up to 120Mbps possible. In addition, DOCSIS 3.0 also offers full support for IPv6, along with enhanced network management and security features. DOCSIS 3.0 also offers enough bandwidth for IPTV and other high-def video services. Trials of pre-DOCSIS 3.0 gear have been promising. One of the deployments mentioned above has...

Motorola's WiMax modems bring on the sex appeal.
2007-09-27 10:06:00
Apparently the boys and girls over at Motorola are getting some use out of Intel's 2250 Rosendale 2 Chipset's that are fully compatible with 802.16e-2005. This covers 2.3ghz, 2.5ghz, and the 3.5ghz, which fall under WiMax mobile. The surprising part is the pricing which will be $200 in Q4 2007 for the lower cost CPEi300. The much nicer black CPEi800 has built-in WiFi, 4 Ethernet ports and 2 analog line jacks not to mention an external antenna jack. This will drop in 2008 but no price has been set yet. These are quite appealing looking, makes you wonder if we'll ever see these in every Vermont bed and breakfast eventually considering the low cost and ease of installation and use. Considering I work for a wireless ISP I'd love to see how the infrastructure pricing is on these considering 200$ client devices that don't require external outdoor antennas would make our lives considerably easier.
