Molecular Biology of the Cell (Free E-Book)
2008-09-21 17:49:00
by Bruce Alberts (Author), Alexander Johnson (Author), Julian Lewis (Author), Martin Raff (Author), Keith Roberts (Author), Peter Walter (Author)Product DescriptionFor nearly a quarter century Molecular Biology of the Cell has been the leading cell biology textbook. This tradition continues with the new Fifth Edition, which has been completely revised and updated to describe our current, rapidly advancing understanding of cell biology. To list but a few examples, a large amount of new material is presented on epigenetics; stem cells; RNAi; comparative genomics; the latest cancer therapies; apoptosis (now its own separate chapter); and cell cycle control and the mechanics of M phase (now integrated into one chapter). The hallmark features of Molecular Biology of the Cell have been retained, such as its consistent and comprehensive art program, clear concept headings, and succinct section summaries. Additionally, in response to extensive feedback from readers, the Fifth Edition now in...

Sequence and Ligation Independent Cloning
2008-05-14 14:31:00
Regular readers will know about the advantages of T4 DNA polymerase-mediated ligation independent cloning. The fact that it is faster, more efficient and allows easier parallel cloning than conventional cloning has made it my method of choice in the lab. But the technique does have it’s downsides - not least the requirement that existing vector multiple ...
How to shut off background lac promoter expression in LB
2008-04-22 07:24:00
Here’s a tip that you may find useful if you are expressing proteins in E.coli using a lac promoter-based expression system, e.g. pET, in LB medium (L-broth). Lac expression systems are typically induced in the lab using IPTG (isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalacto-- pyranoside), which is a non- hydrolysable analogue of lactose, the natural inducer of the lac operon. Tight control ...
Perfectionism: Are you on the downward spiral?
2008-04-21 12:51:00
Do you fear failure every time you do an experiment? Do you feel constantly stressed about obtaining poor results? Do you feel personally culpable when an experiment goes wrong? If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, you may be suffering from perfectionism. For a scientist, this is a particularly damaging trait that needs to ...
5 Products That Could Make Your Lab Life Easier
2008-04-10 09:35:00
Today I was browsing through the “new technologies” section on the Biocompare website. Apart from the amazing but super-expensive automation equipment that most of us unfortunately have little chance of getting our hands on (at least at the moment), five products caught my eye as being useful for improving techniques widely used by researchers. I ...
5 More Tips for DNA Gel Extraction
2008-04-08 07:55:00
Problems with DNA gel extraction can be a real show-stopper since this is such a routinely used procedure. But, even if you are having no particular problems, it’s always nice to try and pick up some information that might improve your technique just that little bit. Probably for these very reasons, Suzanne’s article 10 Tips for ...
Memorizing Cell and Molecular Biology Details
2008-04-03 10:08:00
Flash cards can work for memorization, but I consider them a waste of time. The amount of time you spend making them could be better used working to understand the big picture of what’s going on with metabolism. The MCAT is not about memorization. The MCAT is about critical thinking. You must UNDERSTAND the equations and ...
A Gecko's Tail
2008-03-24 22:36:00
UC Berkeley biologists report that geckos rely on their tails to keep from falling off vertical surfaces and, if they do fall, to right themselves in midair and maneuver like a skydiver gliding to a safe landing. The discovery is already helping engineers design better climbing robots and may aid in the design of unmanned gliding vehicles or spacecraft. Perhaps, the researchers say, an "active" tail could help astronauts maneuver in space. According to senior author Robert J. Full, professor of integrative biology at UC Berkeley, previous experiments on geckos have focused on their unique toes as the key to running up a wall and hanging onto ceilings. Full discovered six years ago that, while claws help geckos climb rough surfaces, millions of microscopic toe hairs make it possible for them to climb smooth ones. Only when engineers began building gecko-like robots, such as Boston Dynamics Inc.'s RiSE (Robot in Scansorial Environment), the University of Pennsylvania's DynaClim...

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
2008-02-14 22:18:00
The University of Sheffield, UK Departement of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology currently seeks for a postdoctoral research associate. The post holder will investigate the transport of mRNAs to the hyphal tip of the human fungal pathogen C. albicans. The project is a collaboration between the laboratories of Prof P.E. Sudbery and Dr S Wilson. The research will involve a combination of genomics, molecular genetics and cell biology, therefore the successful applicant must have a PhD (or equivalent) and relevant experience in one or more of these areas. Project Details The human fungal pathogen C. albicans can switch growth forms between yeast, pseudohyphae and hyphae, an ability that is thought to be essential for virulence. The Sheffield Candida group, headed by Prof. Peter Sudbery, have shown that polarised growth in C. albicans hyphae is driven by a Spitzenkörper (from the German “apical body”) is present at the tip. Free Biology E-Book: Analytical Molecular Biology
2008-01-11 17:04:00
Title: Analytical Molecular BiologyNumber of pages: 258 pagesPublisher: SpringerISBN: 0792374479Format: PDF (5.03 MB)Book Description:Analytical Molecular Biology illustrates the importance of simple analytical methods applied to some basic molecular biology problems, with an emphasis on the importance of biological problems, rather than the complexity of mathematics. First, the book examines crucial experimental data for a specific problem. Mathematical models will then be constructed with explicit inclusion of biological facts. From such models, predictions can be deduced and then suggest further experimental studies. A few important molecular biology problems will be discussed in the order of the complexity of the mathematical models. Based on such illustrations, the readers can then develop their own analytical methods to study their own problems. This book is for anyone who knows they need to learn how to apply mathematical models to biology, but doesn't necessarily want to, f...

Molecular Biology Problem Solver: A Laboratory Guide
2007-08-10 13:27:00
Most research in the life sciences involves a core set of molecular-based equipment and methods, for which there is no shortage of step-by-step protocols. Nonetheless, there remains an exceedingly high number of inquiries placed to commercial technical support groups, especially regarding problems. Molecular Biology Problem Solver: A Laboratory Guide asks the reader to consider crucial questions, such as: Have you selected the most appropriate research strategy? Have you identified the issues critical to your successful application of a technique? Are you familiar with the limitations of a given technique? When should common procedural rules of thumb not be applied? What strategies could you apply to resolve a problem? A unique question-based format reviews common assumptions and laboratory practices, with the aim of offering a firm understanding of how techniques and procedures work, as well as how to avoid problems. Some major issues explored by the book's expert contributors inc...
