A mommy-writer’s worry
2009-09-24 02:57:00 I write about a lot of things – politics, naughty bits, love toys. I wax philosophical about financial issues and have been known to share with readers the joys of meat-free living. For this, I’ve earned a buck fifty and tons of hate mail. What? I suffer for my art. But nothing worries me more than when I ...

Vegetarian Mommy Blues
2009-06-13 22:58:00 Nothing strikes more fear in the heart of a vegetarian mother than her child saying, “Mom, I ate a hot dog today.” Oldest laid that one on me the other day and I still haven’t recovered. Their Tae Kwon Do camp had an outdoor barbecue. I explained to the counselors that my children don’t dig on animal flesh and they promised to provide cruelty-free fare. Oldest saw what he believed to be a vegetarian hot dog and, true to form, inhaled it. Youngest, also true to form, actually read the label and before he could get out the words, “Beef. This has beef in it,” Oldest burped. The counselor said, “Kosher doesn’t mean vegetarian?” I almost had a stroke. Who doesn’t know the difference between Kosher and meat-free? “Where the hell are we?” I asked. “Lutz?” Oh right. We are in Lutz. Oldest spent most of the night on the potty. Truth be told, I was disappointed he didn’t get sicker. I wanted a touching ...
I want to see the Jonas Brothers Mommy
2009-06-09 16:19:00 Mommy I want to see the Jonas Brothers. I was hearing that all day. I had volunteer at the school. I remember when I first seen Nick, Joe and Kevin. I think it was onone of the Hannah Montana shows. I ask my daughter who is that. She said The Jonas Brothers. I am like okay. I think the show or song was called 'We Got The Party'.I heard the brothers releasing a highly anticipated new album Lines, Vines and Trying Times - is scheduled for world wide release June 16. It seem like the brothers have a great mind set. I just hope they stay focus. The kids love them. So does the President daughters too. I heard they give good concerts. That's a good thing. Most music artist's concerts are horrible.I also heard - While filming the movie Camp Rock, the Jonas Brothers co-wrote and co-produced six songs for fellow Disney Channel star Demi Lovato, album, Don't Forget. I know its old news to you guys. It's new news to me.Well - I end up buying ten concert tickets for my daughter. I am goin...
Hey Mommy...
2009-05-23 22:26:00 dear mother...i stayed awake for hours tonight. with dugong working the night shift and away, the kids asleep as well as yourself, i started to think. mostly about this strange relationship of ours. its a love-hate relationship that i think, had it been thrown to any other person, he or she would have failed and abandon this ship long ago. but not me mother, never me, infact i think i've weathered the storms with you, cruised the high seas with you, and most of all - have that undying unwavering love for you. i remembered a time when i was 6. you were going on a company trip. "to bintan," you said soothingly. "a boat ride away and i would be home before you know it." i clung on to you, breathing in the sweet scent of yours, and then you turned to your side and picked up adi. you begin muttering sweet nothings to him, and i was rendered invisible. again. and thats when the love-hate relationship begin. everywhere i go, or turn you cuddling him, holding on to him like he was this pre...

MOTHER'S DAY EDITION: MICHELLE OBAMA AND HER MOMMY
2009-04-09 22:58:00 Essence was granted the pleasure of having the first interview with First Lady Michelle and her mother, Ms. Marian Robinson. Check out some of what the two had to say: Mrs. Michelle Obama on what being First Lady means to her: "It's an honor and a privilege when you walk into the White House-at least I automatically felt a level of obligation. This is a big responsibility, a wonderful platform and I just want to make sure I take every advantage to serve as a role model, to provide good messages, to be a supportive mate to the President and to make sure that my girls are solid."Mrs. Marian Robinson on seeing her daughter step into this historic role: "Well, to me, it's overwhelming. I never doubted that she could do this. She is doing it with such grace and dignity. So I am just proud. I just hope she does what she wants to do. [Chuckles] Because the things that she wants to do are very important. They mean a lot to her."Mrs. Michelle Obama on finding balance: "Unlike most women,...

“Mommy. This is quite a list.”
2009-01-28 23:02:00 I realized this morning that I say the same things every single day. I say the same *66* things every single day. And I’m not counting “I love you” and “Where did I go wrong?” I actually wrote down everything I say in the morning before my children go to school and in the afternoon and evening when they’re home. I sound like a goddamn broken record. Let’s back up. I’m about to lose my mind. I’m not going to get up on a stage and put this litany to music, but I am sick and tired of saying the same thing over and again to two nine year-olds who think it’s funny when Mommy almost strokes out because the vein bulges in her forehead. I decided to create a chart with everything I say and the boys earn a point for everything they do without a prompt. “Make beds neatly.” “Put your clothes away.” “Chew with your mouth closed.” “Brush your teeth.” “Now brush your teeth correctly.&...

Oprah's Mommy Gets Sued
2008-09-03 21:20:00 For some reason I seem to forget that Oprah has a mother. I always somehow thought she was created via imaculate conception between Maya Angelou and God.Vernita Lee, of Milwaukee, has had an open-ended charge account with Valentina Inc. since January 2004, the civil complaint says. She has hired three attorneys to prove she doesn't owe the bill, according to the lawsuit filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court. The lawsuit, which was first reported by columnist Pete Kennedy in the Waukesha Freeman, says Lee racked up a bill of $155,547.31 in purchases and interest as of July 1. Lee was required to make a minimum monthly payment of $2,000 to the store, court records show.Valentina attorney Joseph Niebler, Sr., said today that at some point Lee stopped making the monthly payments. The store is asking for full payment plus interest, the complaint says.Niebler said the store tried to resolve the bill before filing the lawsuit and continues to pursue a resolution out of court."There isn't...

Social Spark for Mommy Bloggers
2008-07-04 08:10:00 One of the foreign NGO founded in rural hinterland in this part of the world created income generation for the local women in which they were supposed to work on self help bases and earn some additional income. Knowing the culture of the area, NGO had applied a condition that they women working on the project will not do the work on the cost of their own primary responsibility. This worked great and became a win win situation for both NGO as well as women folk.Imagine the blogging and getting paid for mommy bloggers in this milieu. Imagine how can they take care of home, rare their children and at the same time blog and get paid. I think this is the best situation. Mommy bloggers have a lot to say. They can create valuable content in any chosen field or just narrate their experiences for other mothers and or world be mothers. One of the great news is that SocialSpark is right around the corner to cater for all mommy bloggers. I suggest mommy bloggers who are looking for one of the be...

Feeling Like A Bad Mommy
2008-07-02 15:55:00 My sanity was saved when I met Janice at church. I was desperate by the time I had the opportunity to talk with her about my son Caleb. After I implemented her method, Caleb potty trained in one weekend.I was a single mom to three children with Caleb being the middle child. He was nearing his fourth birthday and still was not potty trained. At the time, I was also going through a custody battle for my youngest son. When I was relayed some information that criticized me for not having my son potty trained. It hurt really bad yet I was frustrated. Even my ex husband was criticizing me when I felt he should be the one to help potty train our son. Then Janice came along assuring me that Caleb would be potty trained. I was still skeptical though. Caleb had not shown any interest at all in learning to use the potty. It was almost as if he enjoyed being in soiled pants.Countless days and nights I cried. I was angry, frustrated, and even depressed about it.The opportunity to enroll Caleb in He...

On Food and Mommy-ness
2008-06-05 06:00:00 I cannot be the only parent in the country who stresses over how to make something for dinner that my boys will eat and which won't get me sent to the Mommy Gulag for its utter lack of nutritional content. Breakfast and lunch aren't such problems, as I admit to total surrender there--grilled cheese sandwiches, pancakes, and so on--at that point the goal is just to get through the day with my sanity mostly intact. Dinner, however, is where it all breaks down. And if you're about to write about how your kids love kale and sushi and brussel sprouts tossed in a light truffle sauce . . . or if you're about to let me know that the important thing is not to give in and to make sure they try everything, which is why your prodigy loves curried tofu, well, you can stop right there. I have no interest in competitive parenting, and, what's more, my poorly combined and technically inaccurate mix of Catholicism and karma serves to comfort me with the notion that this is rea...

"Tip of the Week" - The "Mommy" Business Card
2008-06-01 10:04:00 Introducing the 'Mommy' business card. I have always liked the idea of multiple business cards, cards created for different practice areas and utilized when appropriate. But the truth is the business card is really an outgrowth of what as early as last century was called a 'calling card.' Let's face it, a formal business card is not always appropriate for all occasions, yet multiple opportunities present themselves to market your services in more subtle ways with the appropriate exchange of information. This is why I love the subtle business card for Mommy's (yes, Daddy's, too.) It is actually quite brilliant because if you are a parent, there are times you want to give information to the parents of your children's playmates without it being your formal business card. A formal business card doesn't really include the information relevant to the other parent or the occasion. A business card, under certain circumstances, may also come acr... |
