Chicago Cubs Headlines for Monday

Cubs executives and their prized pigI know everyone has been dying for an update on how the Cubs' farmhands are doing in the AFL. Luckily for us, someone from the Trib is down there, watching their every move. Even luckier for us, he's not telling us the gross stuff. Your first question: how did Josh Vitters do in his first game last Wednesday?Making his Arizona Fall League debut Wednesday night for the Mesa Solar Sox, the 20-year-old third baseman ended a seven-pitch at-bat by scalding a line shot directly at Phoenix Desert Dogs shortstop Shawn O'Malley for the first out of the second inning. Vitters saw only four pitches in his next three at-bats -- yet wound up with three...

Chicago Cubs Headlines for Monday: Is it Us? It's Us, Isn't It?

Ryan Theriot, you ass!   Soooo. . . cheering for our own team didn't work. Cheering for someone else's team didn't work. Maybe we're just not supposed to enjoy the post season? The question was posed last night, more than once, "where do we go from here?" Well, as I see it, we have three options: 1) We pick a new team to cheer for this postseason. However, I think we all realize the effect we will have on the lucky team we on which we choose to bestow our fandom. With that in mind, I suggest we cheer for either the Yankees, Brett Favre, or Glenn Beck. 2) We take abefrohman's advice, threaten to cheer for all the...
Monday Night Football Prediction
2009-10-06 00:00:00
After a 4-2 record on Sunday it's time to take a look at the MNF match up between the Vikings and the Packers in Minneapolis tonight. The environment should be electric as Brett Favre takes on his old team on the national TV stage. The latest line has the Vikings as 5 point favorites and the total at 46 1/2 and that line concerns me because it was -3 last Monday. Too many people believe this is going to be a blowout and that is when we usually see a fabulous game develop. I would be careful laying 5 or more and if you can play the money line on Minnesota that is the way to go. **As always these predictions...

Jerry Lewis is less frightening than the CubsThe Cubs lost to the Mets, and it was so uneventful that at least half the Trib's recap was dedicated to Andres Blanco's spectacular defensive play. But in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the New York Mets, Piniella rested shortstop Ryan Theriot, who is in a 1-for-17 slump, and watched Andres Blanco make a play that defied belief. Blanco dived to his left for a Jeff Francoeur grounder, rolled over and made a perfect throw to first in mid-roll to get Francoeur."That's as good a play as I've seen made at the big-league level," Piniella said. "Just a fantastic, fantastic [play]. I don't know how he got the ball over to first base. I...

ASE09: Monday Chris Brogan Keynote (Trisha?s Take)
2009-08-25 00:00:00
Despite more and more sessions being on Sunday of the conference, I think most people still consider the official start of the show to be the Monday keynote.  This year the event added a second keynote on Tuesday, which Dominic and I have already posted our thoughts on.  It’s just taken me awhile to formulate my thoughts for the Monday keynote! The keynote address was given by: Chris Brogan, President, New Marketing Labs (Twitter @chrisbrogan) Julien Smith, co-author of Trust Agents (Twitter @julien) Chris actually teamed up with his co-author of Trust Agents, Julien Smith.  I’ve heard a lot about Julien through Chris’ blog and twitter, and it was nice to put a face to a name and hear him talk as well.  Overall I really liked the message that Chris and Julie gave out: remember social currency can get you farther than monetary currency sometimes.  Chris asked that the audience resist the urge to tweet the keynote as they talked as a social experiment.  I don’...

(Irfan Khan, Los Angeles Times / August 23, 2009) The Cubs had two bright spots on this seven game California disaster tour. First, they pulled out both games they needed to avoid sweeps. Second, the starting pitching was good. Very good, in fact: Ryan Dempster and his fellow starters posted a combined 1.61 earned-run average on the West Coast swing to San Diego and Los Angeles, doing their jobs while the offense failed to do its.(snip) Dempster threw seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing one unearned run, while Jake Fox homered, drove in a pair of runs and had a career-high four hits to raise his average to .305.Let's give a big LOHO round of applause to Dempster and Fox....

ASE09: Monday Chris Brogan Keynote
2009-08-20 18:00:00
Guest Post by Dominic Fawver. The keynote address was pretty good.  In effect it gave an overview of Chris Brogan and Julien Smith’s new book, Trust Agents.  It was based on research that shows that there are more than one type of currency.  One of the most important one of these is social capitol, which is based on trust.  Once you gain the trust of people they will look for your opinions, and trust them, thereby making it much easier to sell things to them.  People will trust your recommendations of products and services.  Knowing the “insider vocabulary” can be a major advantage, and most important: “be known as a person” Julien Smith. The keynote was mostly a conversation between Julien and Chris.  I am looking forward to completing the rest of the book and will be posting a review when I do so.  Powered by Max Banner Ads

Ted Lilly Will Undergo Knee Surgery on Monday
2009-07-25 15:40:00
Yesterday I posted a list of starting pitchers who will be free agents at the end of the 2009 season and with Ted Lilly on the DL the Cubs will have to move quickly to either add a starting pitcher or to add a couple of bullpen arms and move Sean Marshall into the rotation.Lilly is being disabled because of tendinitis in his throwing shoulder but he will also have arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday to clean up a problem that has caused him discomfort for a while. He is expected to be sidelined for approximately three weeks.Ted Lilly's shoulder injury may force the Cubs to add another starter in addition to bullpen help before Friday's non-waiver trade deadline. Here is...

Blood, Sweat & Gears- In response to the doping scandals that tarnished the reputation of professional cycling, former racing cyclist Jonathan "JV" Vaughters formed Slipstream, a team whose members agree to compete without the aid of any performance-enhancing drugs. Documentary filmmaker Nick Davis chronicles the dramatic story of "the clean team" throughout 2008, a year in which the team leader was superstar David Millar -- making a comeback after a doping scandal sidelined his career -- and sees Slipstream win their first invitation to the Tour de France. This is an amazing inside look at these World class athletes, getting ready for the challenge of a lifetime.  The story is great, the images memorable, it's a great way to...
