Monday Game Thread: Cubs @ DBags 8:40 CT/9:40 ET

Heh. The NL is for sucks After a disappointing series in Houston (when Kaz Matsui is constantly getting on base against you, you know things aren't going right), the Cubs head to Arizona to take on the underperforming Diamondbacks in the underperforming NL West. We can all clap our hands together and skip around in circles, as everyone's new favorite Cub, Rich Harden, takes the mound tonight for the second time in a Cubs uniform. And he's going up against an old, tired, humpbacked Randy Johnson. Then again, we can't hit lefties, so it's probably a wash. While we all wait anxiously to see if Rich is, as the young kids say, "the real deal," a far more pressing problem than his pitching prowess faces us here at LOHO. We've been debating this issue for weeks, but the time for pussyfooting around the hard questions is over. Tonight we ask, without fear of reprisal or retribution: Rich Harden, Hot or Not? There is a consensus here at LOHO that we like Rich's hair, but there has al...
Marine Day Monday July 21 2008
2008-07-21 11:14:00
It was Marine Day today.A public holiday that celebrates Im not sure what.Maybe it marks the start of the national water accident and drowning season.More likely its a sign that the summer festival season is upon us again. The annual fire works display at Nagoya Port is on later in the evening but Im too lethargic to catch the crowded subway down there to see it.Trying to avoid the heat of the day I did however venture down to Tsuramai Park and took refuge under the shade of the trees near the lotus pond.It is deceptively quiet. In fact its teeming with activity.Large blue dragonflies dive bombed me as I sat contemplating the newly sprouted lotus blossoms.Below the lotus flowers, small fish in large schools twist and turn between the roots.Meanwhile, knee deep in muddy water, frogs bask and brood in the afternoon heat. The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament rolls on into its second week.Kotooshu's chances of rising to the rank of yokozuna have been extinguished after two early losses.NHK spor...

Anything you can do, I can do shorter. **Don't forget to wish Sparkles the happiest of birthdays today** Lou hatches winning scheme in Houston That's why they call him the cerebral assasin. From the Daily Herald: "Jim Hendry and I were talking before the ballgame," Piniella said, referring to the Cubs' general manager. "I told him, 'We're not going to take any batting practice. We're just going to go out and play.' Today, we went out and scored runs without batting practice. I think when we come here to Houston, we'll make the bus 5:15-5:30 and come out here and stretch and play." The Cubs (58-40) scored a grand total of 2 runs over the first two games of this series, both losses. Typical of Piniella, he said he believed Cubs hitters were trying to "knock those pumpkins off the train" at Minute Maid. Those "pumpkins" atop the big left-field wall actually are large oranges (in keeping with the ballpark's sponsor). Oranges, pumpkins, whatever, Piniella's point was the same....

Monday Mortgage Update

We could be in for another explosive week, as several reports will show the impact inflation continues to have on the economy. Tuesday will bring the wholesale inflation measuring Producer Price Index as well as the Retail Sales Report, which measures the total receipts of retail stores. Since these numbers reflect consumer spending patterns, this report will show how much of an impact inflation and high oil prices are having on consumer pocketbooks. On Wednesday, the Consumer Price Index report will be released, and this widely-watched report will reveal the level of inflation at the consumer level since it shows how much more expensive goods and services are this month over last month. Also, on Wednesday, we’ll get to see the minutes of the Fed’s last Federal Open Market Committee meeting. These minutes could cause some sizzle in the markets especially if they give any indication of what the Fed will do about its benchmark rate, the Fed Funds Rate, at the next meeting....

(Took awhile to finish this - sorry...).PA Governor Ed Rendell (pictured) was quoted as follows here?PHILADELPHIA ? The United States should establish a capital budget to pay for about $1.6 trillion in national infrastructure repairs to ensure the work gets down and prevent the risk of becoming a ?third-rate? economic power, (Rendell) said on Monday. In his first speech as 2008/09 chairman of the National Governors Association, Rendell said U.S. spending on facilities such as roads, bridges, and passenger rail is only 0.6 percent of gross domestic product, compared with 9 percent in China and 3.5 percent in the European Union.?According to a 2005 report by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the U.S. has a shortfall of $1.6 trillion in infrastructure funding over a five-year period.Without those repairs, the U.S. risks becoming a ?third-rate? economic power in 50 years' time, Rendell warned. This takes you to similar warnings from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2005,...

"Kiss this, Lewis" Cub bats go flaccid against Lincecum He's a pretty good pitcher. From the Daily Herald: "Our guy pitched well too, but their guy pitched a little better. I thought the humidity might get to him, but to his credit he threw 8 real good innings of baseball. Obviously he is a good-looking pitcher and his record proves it." Entering Sunday at 10-3 with a 3.13 ERA, Dempster certainly has exceeded expectations in his return to starting. Lincecum, the Giants' fire-baller who just appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, has been even better, and he was again Sunday. Now 11-2, Lincecum added 9 strikeouts to his major league-leading total while lowering his ERA to 2.57. And he has done all that without one big advantage his opponents have - getting to face the Giants' lineup. "It's not just one pitch," Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez said of Lincecum's 98-mph heater. "If you sit on one, you have no chance on the other ones." Hendry pinpoints Cubs' first-half s...
Q & A Monday ? The Return. Or The Revenge. You Decide.

Well, I opened up another Q & A Monday. You were nice enough to do the ?Q? part and now I shall do the ?A? part. Just a few things to remember prior to starting though. My answers cannot be quoted for use within a public forum or to try and impress someone with your (which is actually my) knowledge. Seriously, I?m not that smart and quoting me will only get you in trouble, most likely because I have already quoted someone else and as many teacher told me in school ?you cannot quote the work of others and present it as your own.? I think doing so is called plaque or something like that. The second thing I need to tell you is that if history is any indicator, I will more than likely forget to answer someone?s question. If I do that, just kindly remind me and I?ll get to it within a few months or so. Also, I don?t spell check or fact check my answers, which means unless it has something to do with Barry Manilow, SNL or cheese, it probably won?t be accurate. So, with that o...

Theme: HearSo my friend, Shanta Everington, has done it again! Her second novel, Give Me A Sign, just became available for purchase last week. And if I were you, I'd certainly go out and get a copy!Give Me A Sign is the story of Liz and Doug, outcast schoolmates who find each other and develop a life changing bond. Despite their obvious differences (for one thing, Liz is hearing, Doug is hearing impaired), they discover just how similar they really are, and how much they need each other's time, understanding and love in order to grow as individuals.Shanta's writing had me hooked from the start. I couldn't put down this story of first love (for Liz), typical teen angst (dealing with school bullies, wanting to fit in), and personal struggles (Doug's desire to find a place in the hearing world, to not be "Deaf with a capitol D", yet ultimately suffer certain loss from the trying).Liz and Doug are a powerful couple, each partner pushing the other to work harder than they've ever w...

Cubs make Lou happy going into off day From the Daily Herald: "It's going to happen," Piniella said with a chuckle, recalling how upset he was after Saturday's game. "They happen a few times a year. The problem is, you don't like them when they happen. But you've got to accept it, and to the credit of this team, we came back today and played aggressive, played a real good ballgame. "We got some timely hitting and some really good pitching, and we bounced back. Now we can enjoy our day off tomorrow a little more." The Cubs pounded out 16 hits against former teammate Todd Wellemeyer and the St. Louis bullpen. The man setting the tone on the mound for the Cubs was lefty Sean Marshall, who earned his first victory of the season after pitching well in several roles, both with the Cubs and at Class AAA Iowa. "I felt good," Marshall said. "I made some pitches when I needed to and got out of a couple jams there with some good pitches, and that's how it turned out. "Anything I can do t...

". . . so I went for it, and she totally slapped me across the face!" So let me get this straight: Soriano is out, Z is out, Edmonds has an old person's foot, Theriot's hand hurts, Johnson is on the DL, and Ramirez has to go to the Dominican Republic for three days to deal with family issues. This should make for an interesting lineup. Still, we have a better chance at winning tonight than we have in the last few games. Why, you ask? Because tonight we're facing Barry Zito. Zito only got his third win of the season on June 25. He's got a 7.34 ERA at home and has barely made it out of the 5th most starts this season. He leads the NL in losses and is 5th in the league in base on balls. Translation: even the hapless Ronny Cedeno should be able to hit this guy. Which reminds me: Jim Hendry, I've disagreed with a lot of your moves over the years, but one move I do not disagree with is your failure to sign Barry Zito. Well done. As a team, the Giants are 10 games under .500, 13th in...

Lord bless this rocket house and all who dwell within this rocket house Like many of you, today I am feeling pretty "bleh" about this season. Which, I realize, is completely ridiculous. I mean, it's the end of June, we're in first place, thus far, we've had the best Cubs team I've seen in my lifetime. But still, I can't shake the feeling of impending doom. La Resistance is alive and well in Spain, where the mighty Spaniards bested Germany this weekend in the beautiful game's second-biggest tournament: Euro 2008 will go down in soccer history as the tournament of entertainment, the summer when the Beautiful Game rediscovered its beauty. It was only fitting then that, at the end of a championship that gathered momentum in its third day and never let it slip, this spectacular event got the victor it deserved. There’s a holiday shortened week ahead, as the financial markets will be closed on Friday in observance of Independence Day. But…there could still be lots of action this week, particularly with the Department of Labor’s Jobs Report scheduled for Thursday, just ahead of the long weekend. A positive report could be good news for Stocks, but bad news for Bonds and home loan rates, so it will be especially important to watch all the fireworks that follow the headlines. Remember when Bond prices move higher, home loan rates move lower…and vice versa. The chart below shows how the action in the Bond market improved last week, helping home loan rates to improve as well. So as always, I will be watching closely during the coming week. If inflation continues to shake up the markets or if the news on employment is surprisingly good…the action for Bond prices and home loan rates could change direction and worsen. From the Trib: What was  Lou Piniella thinking when he was ejected in the second inning of Sunday's game for arguing an appeal of  Joe Crede's checked swing? No one knows because Piniella took the fifth, opting to remain in his office after the game and sending bench coach Alan Trammell to deal with reporters after the Cubs' 5-1 loss to the White Sox. Trammell said Piniella would explain himself on Monday in San Francisco. "It was one of those days," Trammell said. "I was basically in charge for most of the game. We're frustrated. Any time you go through a little losing streak, whether you're the Cubs or whomever if you're in last place [it's frustrating]. You want to win. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can?t have him.?Take that, warmonger!?The MoveOn ad is unapologetic in its selfishness, and barely disguised in its disdain for those who have chosen to serve ? and its contempt for those parents who might be proud of sons and daughters who are serving. There's no place like home Dempster reveals secret to home success Performance enhancing? You bet! From the Trib: Ryan Dempster (9-2) remained perfect at Wrigley Field with eight-plus innings of one-run ball, improving to 9-0 while pitching the Cubs to their 14th straight home win, their longest streak since 1936. Dempster and the Cubs are traveling in a parallel universe, looking unbeatable at the corner of Clark and Addison Streets. What's the secret to Dempster's success? "It's Otis' cooking," he said, referring to clubhouse man Tom "Otis" Hellmann. "It's as fine as it gets. It really gets you prepared. We're going to have him start cooking on the road." The Cubs are definitely cooking at home, moving 41/2 games ahead of the Cardinals in the National League Central with Sunday's win. But for the most part, I felt pretty good out there." With the victory, the Cubs accomplished what they had hoped in Phase I of this tough stretch of interleague play, with today's Hall of Fame game mixed in. They took two of three from the Jays to move to 20 games over .500 at 45-25. They beat Jays ace Roy Halladay on Saturday and knocked off Jesse Litsch on Sunday. "It was a good series for us," said manager Lou Piniella. "We lost a close first game on Friday. We beat two darn good pitchers. Halladay's an ace of any ...

Monday fantasy wrap
2008-06-10 05:28:00
BY ADAM RONIS Have to start with one of my favorite players. Ken Griffey Jr. hit career home run No. 600. No doubt in my mind he likely would have had the all-time record had he not endured so many injuries. Brandon Phillips is quietly producing. He hit his 12th homer and has 35 RBIs. He's very consistent and hasn't had a major hot streak, so he goes unnoticed sometimes. Edinson Volquez continues to pitch around walks. He walked five, but was able to get a win. He is 9-2 with a 1.56 ERA. He allowed three earned runs in a start for the first time this season. He went six inning and allowed three hits and struck out five. His value might not get higher than this. Mark Reynolds is picking a good time to get hot again. With Conor Jackson back at first base, Chad Tracy will vie with Reynolds for playing time at third. Reynolds hit his third homer in two games and went 3-for-4 with two doubles. He has 14 homers and 40 RBIs with a .259 average. He has power and even has five steals. He s...

Continuing with the section on the Anointing of the Sick from the USCCB's quiz on the Catechism, here is this week's poll question:True or false?: In time of imminent danger of death when no priest is present, any believer may give the Anointing of the Sick. What do you think? Vote in the poll in the sidebar. Here are the results from the previous poll: True or False?: The sacrament of Extreme Unction, or Anointing of the Sick, may be given more than once during the same illness. True: 40 (83%)False: 8 (17%)Well done! The answer is: True. cf. CCC, no. 1529: Each time a Christian falls seriously ill, he may receive the Anointing of the Sick, and also when, after he has received it, the illness worsens. In response to this poll, Stephen left the following comment: What sort of illness qualify? Only those that may lead to death? We know that "the proper time ... has certainly arrived" by that time, but what about before? What about early stages of cancer? Schizophrenia? Depression? I'v...

Monday again
2008-06-09 20:01:00
It's hard to believe it's Monday again. I didn't really get much of a weekend and I'm kind of bummed. At least I have the next two weekends off. I hope it's warm and sunny so we can enjoy that pool. The kids are addicted. We took Gabby in it yesterday and even though she was cold (because we had just filled it) and her bottom lip was quivering she did not want to get out. It's going to be a fun summer! Maybe I'll have a better tan that I normally do since I'll be pool side on my deck half the summer.
Monday Off-Base Diary: We Need The Extra Day To Clean Up Edition
2008-06-09 19:30:00
If you live in the greater Chicagoland area (and by "greater Chicagoland," I mean "the Midwest"), you saw a lot of this kind of thing this weekend. You think a research base in the South Pole is boring? Think again: WELLINGTON, New Zealand - One of the last shipments to a U.S. research base in Antarctica before the onset of winter darkness was a year's supply of condoms, a New Zealand newspaper reported Monday. Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them. The base only has a skeleton staff through the long winter. 16,500 for a "skeleton staff?" Damn. I guess this explains why Mark wasn't at the chat on Friday night: LEBANON, Pa. - Rescue crews had to cut apart a portable toilet to rescue a man who got stuck naked inside the potty. Authorities say the 31-year-old man used his cell phon...
Jenny’s TV Guide: Monday June 9
2008-06-09 18:21:00
Monday marks the series premiere of Master of Dance on TLC at 8/7c, followed by a 2nd episode at 8:30/7:30c. Hosted by Joey Lawrence, it tests the dancer’s moves by changing the song mid-performance to see if they can really go with the flow. Only the dancers with a full repertoire and the flexibility to keep up with the beat will be able to claim the grand prize - $50,000. Tonight is also the 2-hour season premiere of Nashville Star on NBC at 9/8c. Finally, tonight also brings with it the season finales of Greek on ABC Family at 8/7c and Ego Trip’s Miss Rap Supreme on VH1 at 10/9c. Oh, and if you haven’t seen the first season of The Bill Engvall Show (on TBS), check out one of the season 1 episodes airing tonight on CBS at 8/7c. They are just airing the one episode, I believe, to try and entice new viewers to TBS on the 12th to the season premiere. (more…)

We hope you enjoy this case study.SummaryProspects for your products and services can come from anywhere and show up at almost any time. But how do you get those leads in the first place and keep them “warm” once they’re in the pipeline? See how a school’s marketing team doubled enrollment with a nurturing campaign that included targeted online advertising, search, telemarketing and email. ChallengeAdult distance learners are a difficult demographic for colleges to attract. It’s not like targeting high school students within a certain radius and knowing that many of them will be interested in you simply because of your location.Ronald...
Blue Monday
2008-06-09 16:00:00
Blue Monday is a classic southern take on easing in your work week. A bourbon open bar can be dangerous, luckily there's some tasty BBQ available (not free) and live blues to keep you sedated if you can get out of work fast enough to hit the slope. note: since I finally got a chance to stop by this place, here's a little bit of info... it's only free bourbon with food purchase. Man's gotta eat through, right? Read More...Digg this | Email to a friend | Reddit

Beyond the Monday headlines
2008-06-09 15:55:00
Never mind the morning's headlines.  Yes, the nationwide average gas price has topped $4.00 and the most powerful man in America who no one's ever heard of is floating some sort of global financial regulatory scheme in which the Fed calls most of the shots.  (Evidently Mr. Geithner missed the memo that America ...
