Milk Calendar Mondays: Faster-than-Take-Out Chicken and Veggie Chow Mein
2008-05-27 02:31:00
Hmmm...this month's Milk Calendar recipe, "Faster-than-Take-Out Chicken and Veggie Chow Mein," seems to have unleashed my not-so inner snarkiness.Let's start with the title.Could it be any longer?Well, yes it could be.It could be something like "Here's another excuse to use some perfectly good milk in a recipe which would be better off without it, but we can't admit it because this is the Milk Calendar, and we need to encourage people to cook with milk, so stirfries are fast and easy so we'll get people to use milk in their stirfries and cook at home instead of getting a greasy takeaway which actually tastes better but again, we can't admit to that either."Like most marketing ploys, the title was more spin than fact. It took me longer than the indicated 20 minutes (prep and cooking) to get the meal on a plate. Granted, I'm not the speediest slicer or shrimp peeler and "deveiner," but I don' think I'm *that* slow."Wait a minute. Shrimp? I thought that was funny looking chick...

SOHH Sports: Aftermath Mondays: LeBron James and Paul Pierce Go Mano Y Mano
2008-05-19 15:11:00
Damn. The show LeBron James and Paul Pierce put on yesterday was unbelievable. I'm talking Mano Y Mano, knockdown dragout fight, ya diiiig!? P2 finishes with 41, King James 45, but in the end the Celtics advance and you can't be surprised. The home team won every game. Peep some of the action here. Pierce and 'Bron are some beasts, boy. Here's what the King told the Associated Press after the loss: "We both tried to will our team to victory and, just like Dominique Wilkins, I ended up on the short end and the Celtics won again. I think the second round of the postseason, Game 7, these fans will finally have an opportunity to forget a little bit about what Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins did and remember what Paul and LeBron did. This will go down in history." Yea, that's pretty much right on point. Game 7 will go down in history ... without a doubt. That sh*t was crazy between LeBron and Pierce. At one point in the second half, LeBron said he looked over ...
I Hate Mondays
2008-05-12 21:41:00
Well I hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was...different. Friday night, I took myself home and vegged out. We're starting up some new shows, so it's been a busy week. I spent the night on the couch watching The Empire Strikes Back. I don't know why. Nerd. I know. I just had the urge. I also had a couple vodka-cokes to help to scenario. Towards the end I wasn't even watching so much as drunkenly rambling to my friend Michael on the phone. Good times.Saturday I got up and went into Park Slope. I thought I'd re-familiarize myself with the area and look for some real estate offices. Well apparently they're too classy to post apartments up in their windows (like every real estate office in Astoria) so there was no luck there...but it was nice to just walk around. Not a horrible day weather wise. Saturday night was an interesting one. My plans were canceled on me, so I went into the city to make the night up as I went. I started off with a drink at Posh, and followed it up with ...

Monkhouse Mondays: Care Capitals of Europe?
2008-05-12 08:43:00
[Editor's Note: Dr. Thomas has invited Eden Alternative's Europe Coordinator Christa Monkhouse to guest-post on a weekly basis from across the Big Pond. Christa is personally responsible for introducing the Eden Alternative to Europe, first in the UK, then Denmark, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and soon in Sweden, Finland and other European nations. Stay-tuned for regular updates on 'Monkhouse Mondays'.] From the European Culture Capital to the European Care Capital* – What else? Every year the European Union (EU) selects and celebrates a cultural capital of Europe. They spend considerable amounts of money to polish them up and promote tourism. In fact, several "B-Cities“ have, through this program, become permanently attractive European tourist destinations. One such city is Graz, the capital city of Styria (Arnold Schwarzenegger was raised nearby), and Linz has been chosen for 2009. It's the capital of Upper Austria, on the (blue) Danube close to where I was born and r...

Vencie Surf Report 05/05/08 Monday Fucking Morning

Venice Surf Report Free Surf Report Venice CAEh.......Looks pretty crappy out there. Maybe waist high, low tide, junked up, shitty looking wind chop. But hey, you may be into that; I can't imagine why, but that's why Baskin Robbins makes 31 flavors, eh? I mean, somebody's eating Kiwi Mint Bubble Gum Sorbet, right?2 out south, one out north, overcast and cool, a perfect morning to eat a big pot brownie and get back into bed and watch cartoons. Not me though, I am at work and manning the fort, ready to defend the battlements of the world of finance. Ho hum.Not everyone is hating Monday as much as I am today. Leprechaun made a sweet score after the big Cinco de Quatro party at Baja Cantina yesterday. Off-Base Diary: Rainy Days And Mondays Always Get Me Down Edition
2008-04-28 20:04:00
Actually, I usually love rainy days. But rainy off-days are a different story. For all you Jessica Simpson fans out there, I hope you learn to love her dad as much as you love her, because he ain't going nowhere: Though Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo seem like the picture-perfect couple, OK! magazine reports that Jess's dad-cum-manager-cum-media mouthpiece, Joe, is a problem-causing paternal third wheel in the relationship. Case in point, an insider told OK! that the much-publicized Mexican excursion Jess and Tony enjoyed in January was never meant to include all the media hubbub. "Everybody agreed to tell no one about the trip," the source said. "On the day they were flying out, who shows up? Joe Simpson. Tony and the other guys thought it was weird." Tony and his Dallas Cowboy teammates, who were also part of the festivities, now believe that Joe was the paparazzi informant, according to the source. What kind of girl doesn't tell her dad to get lost so she can have some time ...

Mondays
2008-04-28 16:18:00
Yuck, Monday. I'm counting on all the weekend fun I had to fuel me through the rest of the week. Luckily, I had plenty of it - fun, that is! My brother came to visit, and we spent the whole time playing Together Jigsaw at Cafe.com, racing each other to see who could put the pieces together first. He might beat me more often if he didn't keep getting distracted by the pictures. Not that I blame him - there's tons of great ones - but sheesh! 23 losses in a row?  Or maybe I'm just that good :-). Anyway, you guys should grab your friends and check it out too! And after you've had a chance to try out a few of the different puzzles, why don't you post a comment to share which was your favorite? I love the sunflower one myself. Keep your chin up, the weekend will be here before you know it! Keep playing those awesome online games to get yourself through the week!
Wonderful Mondays!
2008-04-28 15:37:00
Had a great day at Church yesterday. We finished "BIG LESSONS FROM LITTLE CRITTERS" and ended the evening on a great intimate worship. God was really moving as we just prayed and worshiped our great God. Now it's time for wonderful Mondays!Wonderful Mondays! What?! A lot of people get the "Monday Blues", not me. I actually really enjoy Mondays. Though it may sound weird, I actually use Mondays as my Sabbath. Let me explain.A lot of people will view the Sabbath day as Sunday and some that are orthodox will view it as on Saturday. For myself Sunday and Saturday is no day of rest. Every Saturday night I'm studying my sermon and getting spiritually and mentally prepared for the next day and obviously on Sunday (which is the busiest day of the week for me) I'm preaching and fulfilling my duties and my joy of pastoring. So what about the sabbath? Am I breaking it?A lot of people have been confused about what Sabbath really means. Lets look at what the Word says real quick about it. Loo...
Free face painting on Mondays at Barston's Child's Play
2008-04-28 05:48:00
On manic Mondays, sometimes the kids and I head over to Rockville Pike's Congressional Plaza. One of the kids might need a haircut by Debbye at Cartoon Cuts ($2 off coupon if you click "special promotions,") I'll use one of our 20% off coupons at Buy Buy Baby (if you don't get those in the mail, you can join the email list) or we'll have another errand at one of the family-focused bank account drains located in this shopping center. To turn the drudgery of Monday errands into magic, we'll hop into Barston's Child's Play. With free face painting on Mondays for kids from 11-11:30am a quick stop inside this stimulating toy and children's book store makes the day special. There are train tables and doll houses for interactive play, a hollow "tree" for crawling through in the center of the store and friendly staff that doesn't mind if kids try out the toys. There are bins of wind ups and novelties in the 50 cent - $4 range right by the cash register, if you find it impossible ...
Milk Calendar Mondays: Cinnamon Crunch Raspberry Muffins
2008-04-22 00:54:00
For those of you who flipped your Milk Calendar to April and wondered about my adventure with Salmon and Rice Primavera, well, you'll just have to keep on wondering. Or you can do the recipe and assume that whatever you thought of it will be exactly my reaction. I didn't attempt the recipe because of a salmon allergy (how wrong is that?).So this month's Milk Calendar Monday recipe let me dive into one of the extra eight recipes. I really wonder why they separate these out from the others. I mean, yes, it's always good to give your customers more than they asked for (well, more in a good way... higher prices, unending telephone trees, days of headaches to get a simple thing done are NOT examples of this), but these...um...hidden...recipes always look more interesting and tasty than the monthly spotlights. I'd have been happier if the Easy Jambalaya recipe (yes, I do drone on about that one) was hidden on one the back pages and the recipe I chose instead was on a calendar page.I ...

Happy Monday!
2008-03-24 17:54:00
How was your weekend? Hope it was a good one.Mine was nice and laid-back. Saturday we took the kiddos to the Easter Egg Hunt with my girlfriend Loyna and her kid and her mom. We were disappointed about the first egg hunt event we wanted to check out because we were late and the event was so short that it was already over even before we got there. There were no eggs or other activities to check out anymore. So we ended up going to a church-hosted egg hunt event close by and it actually turned out better than the first one. My little boys both had a fun time being outdoors in the beautiful weather with mommy and daddy. Gabriel, my toddler enjoyed playing at the bounce house with the other kids who were there. For some reason he wasn't that interested in the egg hunting yet. Hmm, maybe next year when he's a little older. Sunday was laid-back and lazy. My husband and I just took it easy and stayed home all day, playing with our kids and watching Lifetime movies. We must have watched t...

Milk Calendar Mondays: One-Pot Tomato Parmesan Rotini
2008-03-18 02:44:00
Workasaurus has been wreaking havoc overtime, travelling up and down the 401, visiting Ivonne and me, crashing on our chesterfields and begging rides to and from our offices. I don't know about our Dear Little Puff of Cream , but whenever the Worky shows up over here, it seems as if its rather presumptuous cousin, Deadlineadactyl also arrives in tow, shrieking out calendaric countdowns, sometimes skipping a date or three. Yeah, they are both favourites right now, and the prime reasons for me neglecting all my bloggy friends. To say the least, right now bulk cooking and reheating home-made frozen goodies is how I'm keeping myself going...well, that and lots of coffee...lots of Tim Horton coffee (and before the Canadians ask, I've only one ONE coffee out of about 20-30 cups...meh).Anyway, this weekend I decided to venture into the March Milk Calendar recipe for One-Pot Tomato Parmesan Rotini. Given how...um...not good the February travesty was, I was apprehensive as to whether I cou...

Milk Calendar Mondays: Easy Jambalaya
2008-02-18 18:58:00
Elizabeth of Blog From Our Kitchen noted in January's MCM post"...I must say that I do get a kick out of looking at the "for the adventurous" section at the bottom of the recipe. I'm amazed at what is sometimes considered to be 'adventurous.'"Sometimes recipe writers try too hard. Sure, their intentions may be innocuous--helpful, even--but every once in a while even the best-laid plans of mince and mandoline may be best left in that dark place where recipes never are never committed to paper (or pixels).I fully understand many Canadians do not live in urban centres and may not have easy access to the same ingredients as those who live in larger cities. Heck, I live in one of our larger cities and I have trouble reliably finding chipotles in adobo sauce in our mainstream grocers. I also know that because not everyone was raised with Asian, Central American or even Mediterranean foods (among others), balancing culinary timidity with an honest curiosity of different flavours can be...
Case of the Mondays
2008-02-11 16:58:00
Well this weekend kind of ended on a bad note. Let's see. Friday was good. My roommate Steve and I are currently preparing for the 1st Annual Queensies Awards Ceremony for March 1st. It should be pretty fun. We watched Tommy Boy and Aladdin. What a rockin' evening.Saturday, I went and made an appointment to get more tattoo work done on my left arm. I'm eventually going to have a half sleeve. I am sooo excited I think I just peed my pants typing that.Saturday night was a mess. I swung over to my friend Daniel Nardicio's DList Radio show and hung out for a bit. It was really a lot of fun...but then the universe had to even itself out and soooo....some out of town "friends of a friend of a friend" were here and I offered to show them a good time. Well they met me at Therapy on 52nd and they were already drunk and acting like fools -- whipping out flasks in public and in the middle of bars, losing cells phones, wallets. It was annoying to say the least...so I just left them to their...

A Bad Case of the Mondays
2008-01-29 23:06:00
When I arrived at work yesterday morning, it was about 25 degrees outside. I know. I know. It's not as cold as where you are at but let me just tell my story here. I shuffled from my car down into the office at the Arlington National Cemetery Administration building as fast as I could. I didn't want to spend any extra time outside than what I absolutely had to! I hate the cold!As soon as I got in the office, I picked up the phone and began dialing the uniform phone number. Each day, depending on the weather, the uniform changes. And since there are fifty or more soldiers marching in the cemetery at any given time, someone has to put the word out what the uniform is so that we all look good together.Monday being as cold as it was, I knew that the uniform would be overcoat and trooper cap. The trooper cap is the winter dress cap that we wear in cold weather. It actually snaps under your chin. I think it looks dorky but I have to say that it is very very warm.As I was almos...

Milk Calendar Mondays: Roast Beef Dinner Salad
2008-01-15 03:09:00
Found tucked amidst sales flyers and the colour comics, November's new Milk Calendar's arrival is a an anticipated bit of Canadiana, linking together potentially millions of families across the country. Think I'm kidding? More than 2 million were distributed in Saturday newspapers.I remember being little, leafing through its pages from --the full-colour pictures represented "Canadian" food for me--not what I got a lot of as a youngster. My Dear Little Mummy (okay, she was My Dear Big Mummy then) rarely cooked from it. Apart from the occasional muffin or cake, the recipes went largely untried in our household. So there it dangled on a bare nail, part art, part time keeper and reminder of bills to be paid and those already paid. Each month had a different meal or treat--everything from milkshakes and smoothies to pastas and, of course cakes and other sweets. Each beautifully photographed to entice the home cook to cook with milk and its kindred foods. At the end of the year, the ca...
A Case of the Mondays
2008-01-15 00:58:00
Somebody took a piss on Smithee's office door today.  This has been a very strange Monday. Not so much for me, but definitely for Smithee. Pangbourn, the Sr VP of Marketing, went to HR today and told Triplet, the Sr VP of HR, that if Smithee comes within 50 yards of him he'll call security and have him shot. Triplet explained that even though he was a senior vice president, he could not have anyone shot. Pangbourn then asked for the proper approval form and said he could get Skeffington, the CEO, to sign off on the request. Osmund, the Sr VP of Licensing, also paid a visit to Triplet. Apparently Smithee had sent her a nude photo of himself having sex with another woman with a note that said, "This could be you." Osmund claimed that it could never be her; she would never assume the doggie position because it's demeaning to women. The only way a woman should have sex with a man is to put him beneath her and ride on top. Triplet said that she couldn't file a com...
