Challenges ahead for Indian Monetary Policy
2008-02-05 08:04:00
The much expected rate cut by RBI did not happen. In the midst of all the all sorts of speculation, RBI has adopted a policy of wait and watch for the time being. So what?s there left in Indian market in coming days? The impact of differential interest rate is going to have diverse effect. The following heads could be one way to summarize the future move. More inflow of dollar is expected in the coming months and the huge capital inflow will further complicate the monetary policy. Rupee has already appreciated by almost 12.3% against dollar in last year and further gain could worsen the plight of export industry. Textile industry has already lost more than 50,000 jobs the issue needs to be addressed soon. We witnessed the lowest inflation of last 5 years in December 2007, but the wholesale price index rose 3.93% in the week ended January 19. This inflation was highest in the last five months. The huge capital inflow in the market from outside is expected to put pressure on inflati...
American Monetary Policy Will Ruin the Economy of the EU
2008-02-04 17:49:00
by Richard Backus The FED has been engineering the continuance of a strong dollar and the EU has been forced to follow suit although both countries are facing an ongoing or incipient recession. This article will explain why this policy will fail with the ultimate effect of impoverishing the working classes in both the US and the EU. In the interest of the rich in the US, the FED has pursued monetary policies designed to keep them rich but will ruin the working classes (and ultimately ruin the rich as well.) The foreign trade deficits which are the result of this policy will, within a short period, cause a catastrophic fall in the value of the dollar resulting in a worldwide financial implosion and worldwide recession. First it is necessary to explain the history of the economic policies which caused these deficits. When the Second World War ended the US was producing approximately seventy percent of the manufactured goods in the western world. The manufacturing capability of the ...

RBI’s quarterly review of the monetary policy
2008-01-31 04:07:00
The RBI Governor has kept the key rates unchanged in the recent review of the monetary policy. The key rates here include: Bank rate, CRR, Repo rate and Reverse repo rate. (Refer to the glossary or search our blogs for the definitions of these rates.) Bank rate: 6% Repo rate: 7.75% Reverse repo rate: 6% CRR: 7.5% This has not gone down well with the expectations of the market, because everybody was expecting that RBI would reduce the rates in response to the US Federal reserve’s steep cut of the funds rate (the rate at which banks borrow/lend to each other). The Fed rate cut is seen as having sharpened the interest rate differentials between India and the US, leading to splendid arbitrate opportunity. This is expected to accentuate funds inflows into the country, leading to further rupee appreciation, subsequent sterilisation and the attendant fiscal costs. But the RBI has stood its ground and the logic appears to be that there is no need for India to respond t...

Econit: monetary policy to be tight in 1st half of 2008
2008-01-17 00:48:00
Econit Advisory Group, an Indonesian economic research institute, said the country`s monetary policy in the first half of 2008 is likely to be tight so that the possibility of banks lowering their lending rates will be slim. "In the first half of 2008, the monetary policy will tend to be tight. Only in the second half there will be a chance for banks to lower their lending rates," Econit economist Rasyad A. Parinduri said on Wednesday. He said Bank Indonesia (BI) as the country`s monetary authority would stick to its upper inflation rate target of 6.0 percent for 2008, or 0.5 percent lower than the Econit`s inflation rate forecast of 6.5 percent. "Therefore, in the first half of 2008 the benchmark rate, locally known as BI Rate, will likely remain at 8.0 percent. Only in the second half it will decline by several basis points," he said. He said the increase in the global prices of food and energy this year would have a significant impact on the global economy. In general, co...
Monetary Policy
2008-01-14 13:15:00
Monetary policy intends to achieve a balance between excess and shortage of money supply in the market/economy. These policies are concerned to the supply/control of money. It influences the pace and direction of economic activity, money supplies, interest rates, borrowing and price level. In the case of shortage of money on the economy the growth gets hampered which has negative impact on the prosperity of people. On the other hand if there is excess of money in the market, the prices of goods and services goes up and severely impacts the poor. The government/RBI needs to make sure that the sufficient money is available with market for the growth without affecting the poor. The main objectives of monetary policy are – Maintaining the price stability Inflation has strong negative impact on social welfare and needs to be maintained at lower level. Domestic and International Monetary Policy, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2007-10-17 07:00:00
Mr. Chairman, as you know, I have consistently favored a policy of non-intervention with regard both to foreign affairs and to economic policy. While there may well be problems with the Russian economy in terms of failed privatization, government expropriation of assets, etc., there is no reason that these issues should concern the United States government. Foreign nations could easily criticize the United States for its weak dollar policy which favors our exporting industries while harming the exporting industries of our trading partners; for our eminent domain policies which make a mockery of property rights; and for Sarbanes-Oxley, which unfairly burdens companies operating in this country and causes companies to move to foreign capital markets. We would understandably resent this intrusion into our affairs. read more

China Will Continue To Moderately Tighten Monetary Policy
2007-09-29 20:24:00
From Wall Street JournalBEIJING -- China's central bank on Friday said it will continue to moderately tighten monetary policy amid inflation pressures, even as it closely monitors the potential impact of U.S. subprime-mortgage problems on global financial markets and China itself. The comments, in a summary of the People's Bank of China's third-quarter monetary-policy-board meeting, highlight that Beijing is weighing the risk of a domestic economic slowdown because of problems in the U.S. financial sector against the imperative to prevent China's economy from overheating, including curbing consumer-price and asset-price inflation. At the moment, the PBOC's focus remains mainly on the domestic economy, and in the summary it said it "will continue to implement a monetary policy with a moderate tightening bias."The summary, posted on the PBOC's Web site, comes after the August consumer-price index surged 6.5% from a year earlier, the fastest gain in more than 10 years, and as price...
