Monkey business
2008-06-23 23:53:00 BBC says, " A group of Indians are planning to present a statue of the revered Indian monkey God, Hanuman, to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. The group decided to order the idol after they read a magazine report saying that Mr Obama carried a good luck 'monkey king' charm. Hindus revere monkeys which they believe are descendents of the monkey God Hanuman. The two-foot tall, 15kg gold-polished, brass idol has been made as a present for Mr Obama because "he will be good for India if he becomes the next president," according to Brij Mohan Bhama, leader of the group. "We have heard that he carries a small monkey charm in his pocket. So he is a devotee of Hanuman. That's why we want to present him with this idol," he said. "So has Obama any Christian principles? Not if he carries charms and receives idols. Will he accept the idol and lose Christiam votes or take it to gain Hindu ones?

Monkey Business: Curatorial Practice, Pt. 4
2008-04-21 22:25:00 A vague sense of disquiet came over me when I first learned of Zwirner & Wirth?s ?recreation? of an important mid-1960s exhibition by Dan Flavin. The 1964 Green Gallery Show was purportedly the first time Flavin exhibited fluorescent lights alone as art. Flavin?s seven pieces were installed at Richard Bellamy?s space and as originally conceived dealt with the ?formal and chromatic relationships that were engendered by his fluorescent light works when they were shown together.?(1) Thus, we are encouraged by the curators of this new ?recreation? to accept that Flavin was also first engaging the consideration of his sculptures as a whole to be perceived within an architectural site. This is heady discourse within the Minimalist canon and if we agree on the chronology then 1964 might very well be the beginning of site specific sculpture, i.e., sculpture created for a particular space. Further distinctions in site specific work later evolved into two explorations: assimilative work in...

You can put your work in their SALEROOM, also for free, and they take no commission. Or you can enter your art into their SHOWDOWN to bring more viewers to your portfolio there. You might have seen this painting in a previous post. "Monkey Business" is a lively, bright, acrylic abstract, biomorphic and somewhat whimsical. It's 24 x 36 inches on gallery-wrapped canvas, and has lots of energy and movement. I've loaded it for the SAATCHI SHOWDOWN round that runs between 03-24-2008 and 03-31-2008, and I would love to have your vote! All you have to do is click on this link, and look for "Monkey Business" below the marquis at the top of the page. (A vote of "one" is the lowest, and "ten" is the top rating.) 2008-02-02 03:48:00 Monkey Business - c 2008 Lynda LehmannI've done several new paintings in the past week, hoping to have more work for my upcoming show. I had great fun with this one, and that's probably somewhat obvious to you in looking at it. It's 24 x 36 inches, painted in acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas. It's very colorful and full of gesture and motion, but my eye is usually comfortable with chaotic compositions. This one is somewhat surreal and musical, with an organic feeling to it. I'm not quite sure whether the bottom right corner is finished. It's seems a bit empty to me, as if it's calling for a little more articulation of the detail there.Another problem for me is that at times I prefer this as a vertical composition, and other times I prefer it on the horizontal. This is a mystery to me, as I usually have a strong preference one way or the other. How do you like it best?I'll try to post a few more of my new works before my show, and later on, photos of the Opening. Thanks for ...
"Filipino Monkey" is No Monkey Business
2008-01-21 15:58:00 PerryScope: By Perry DiazOn January 6, 2008, the United States was just a few seconds away from triggering a war with Iran -- and possibly ignite World War III. Three American warships were cruising down the Strait of Hormuz when five Iranian speedboats menacingly approached them. According to news accounts of the encounter, a radio transmission from an unidentified person called out in English, "I am coming to you. You will explode in a few minutes." The incident happened the day before President George Bush traveled to the Middle East on a diplomatic mission. I searched the Internet for a video of the incident and the following was what I found: "I am coming to you," the unidentified person said. An American crew member responded, "Inbound small craft, you are approaching a coalition warship operating in international waters. Your identity is not known, your intentions are unclear. You are straying into danger and may be subject to defensive measures. Request you establish communi...

Monkey business yields coffee
2007-12-27 12:04:00 Coffee connoisseurs are going ape for a rare brew that Taiwanese farmers are producing with the help of monkeys. Formosan rock monkeys have long been a scourge to coffee farmers in Taiwan's mountains because they eat the ripe berries and spit out the seeds. But now, the farmers are collecting these half-chewed seeds and roasting them to produce a coffee that is being brewed all over the island. Coffee farmer Liao Jingdong tried to roast beans which had been spat out by monkeys and discovered a unique taste, different from the original. Liao says the discarded seeds yield a sweeter coffee with a vanilla-like scent, which sells for about $56 a pound (450 grams). FOR MORE VISIT DESI FUNDOO... A FUN FILLED FUNDOO FORUM... Monkey Business
2007-11-27 21:59:00 My work schedule is one that requires a lot from me. Because I live so frigging far from civilization, I have to tuck all of my hours into a four day work week. It's a 70 mile round trip daily, so it's best if I stay longer but go there less. My job is also extremely physically demanding, so by the time I finish a ten hour shift, I'm completely wiped out and good for nothing. I work Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday... and then generally use Tuesday to recover. Wednesday and Thursday are the days I have to catch up at home with domestic deeds such as laundry, and to play around a bit with writing and blogging.I've pretty much tapped out my archives at this point. I have one or two things yet I can post from the past, not counting the Enchantmonths series, but from here on out, it's gonna hafta be fresh, or nada.I haven't been very strict with myself about writing lately. I used to be extremely vigilant... writing was my career of choice, my main passion, and the key to my s...

Monkey Business
2007-10-30 02:04:00 Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to all the villagers there that he would buy monkeys for $1.00.The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands of monkeys at $1.00 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy monkeys at $2.00. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to $2.50, and the supply of monkeysbecame so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $5.00! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy the monkeys on behalf of him.In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that t...

2007-08-31 06:09:00 People used to say that if you took a million monkeys and a million typewriters and gave them a million years, eventually someone would produce Shakespearian-quality writing. Then the internet came along, and we have millions of monkeys pounding away at millions of keyboards (myself included), and it hasn’t taken us a million years to figure out that it ain’t gonna happen. They are so like us, yet just enough different to make a monkey or an ape doing human things seem tremendously funny. I wonder if monkeys in the wild laugh at us! Monkey Business - Random Monkey Trivia
2007-03-28 20:06:00 Here's some random monkey and chimp trivia. I know that monkeys and chimps are different species but I thought it would be fun to include examples of both.1.I was born in the Chinese Year of the Monkey (years include 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004). According to my friend's astrology website: "Sexual and naughty, these cheeky imps have a witty response for everything. With one of the fastest minds on the circuit, you have intelligence and skills other people cannot match and being a bit of a show off, you let them know it. Aggressive and unpredictable, you can be tough opponents in any game which is just as well because you’re extremely competitive. Your sense of humour is what makes you so popular and you make a brilliant impersonator. Monkeys have such versatile talent they can succeed in any career especially in: writing, comedy performance, sports, art, design, education, PR, science, generally, something that keeps them interested." Famous Monkeys include Je...
