Montgomery County executive to get $65.000 bathroom
2008-03-20 22:09:00 Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is taking political heat over a new $65,000+ bathroom being built at taxpayer expense for himself and his executive staff. The bizarre expense comes at a time of a massive county budget crisis with a property tax rate increase on the table and job & service cuts an absolute certainty. Leggett defended the expenditure here in Maryland by claiming that that it was approved in a previous budget and wasn't a major cost anyway. Security reasons are being cited as the reason for a private loo. (No, I don't see the connection either.) The more likely reasoning may be that the executive want to take care of his needs without having to cross the paths of employees and inquisitive reporters along the way.At any rate, the claimed need for such a dubious expenditure is absolutely preposterous. Tuesday at a Sport and Health Club in Gaithersburg, a man wearing women’s clothing walked into a women’s locker room and his presence didn’t go unseen by real women who were there changing. He never said a word to anyone who saw him. The health club admits the man is a member. The gym also has unisex, family restrooms, which the man ignored. The president of Sport and Health Clubs said in a statement that his company will review the new law with company lawyers. 2007-06-13 16:09:00 In a report today from the Washington Post, the Montgomery County School Board did approve the unnecessarily controversial addition to middle and high school health curriculum. The article did take a bit of a swipe at the school board..."Much of the nation is moving toward an "abstinence-only" approach to sexeducation, which emphasizes the advantages of confining sex to marriage. Butschool systems in liberal communities are heading in the opposite direction,teaching more about sexual orientation, as well as contraception and abstinence,in what is termed "comprehensive" sex education."I suppose the generally conservative staff of the Post sees the mere mention of the fact that people have varying sexual orientations is enough to earn the board the label of "liberal." Personally, I think the board acted responsibly in adopting this curriculum. Congratulations, Montgomery County...you've made a huge step in the right direction.
