Evolve or die: Can we shed our moral primitivism before itÂ’s too late?
2008-05-27 16:12:00 by Jason Miller The introduction and questions providing the catalyst for Best’s deconstruction of capitalism, corporatism, speciesism and the like are “As ye sow, so shall ye reap…” Endless resource wars, globalization, privatization, profits over life, exploitation, raping the Earth, poisoning and irradiating the environment, exponentially criminal levels of unnecessary suffering caused by the concentration of wealth into the hands of a few, Climate Change, alarming rates of species extinction, Peak Oil, a jungle of cronyism and corruption so dense you couldn’t hack your way through it with the sharpest of machetes, and increasingly powerful monopoly entities intensifying their stranglehold on the “free market” are the rotting fruits that comprise the bitter harvest we are reaping by the bushel-basketful. And our Karma’s not through with us yet. Not by a long-shot. As long as we maintain our jejune, myopic, and infinitely idiotic devotion to capitalism, all but a selec...

Odel Thurman and the Moral High Ground
2008-05-21 01:54:00 Who’s right and who’s wrong? Yesterday the Bengals released Odell Thurman for missing some workouts earlier this month. Thurman says he simply didn’t return to practice as swiftly as the team liked after his grandmother passed away. Clearly there are other factors which played a roll in the decision. Did Thurman’s past drug suspensions put him on a short leash even for an offense like a bereavement absence? Did the team think the story about Thurman’s grandmother wasn’t the “whole story†(a la Zach Randolph)? On the other hand, it’s possible to team used Thurman’s absence a way to cut ties with a player who’s had a checkered past. The one word that repeatedly jumps off the page of the AP story on Thurman’s release is “voluntary.†As in the “voluntary†workouts Thurman was released for missing. Sometimes in sports things happen and fans never know the real story. This is one of those transactions where there’s likely more than meets the eye...

WordsDay: A children?s story, complete with moral
2008-05-15 17:28:00 The Old Man and The Hawk for Carrie If he hadn’t been thirsty, the boy might have missed it. He saw it when he raised his canteen. It didn’t seem like much at first, he thought, just a black speck curling through the blue Utah sky. But he kept looking, curious. He squinted at the distant mystery, his thirst temporarily forgotten. “Mr. Seth, is that a bird?” The old man leaned against a stout but gnarled juniper, thumbs hooked in the shoulder straps of his worn canvas pack. He knew how and when to steal a few seconds’ rest as the minutes and the hours and the days and the life flowed by. He curled his arm around the juniper, letting his palm see and know the tree’s rough bark. He didn’t look up. He didn’t need to. “It’s a hawk, son.” “How do you know?” The old man eased one strap from his shoulders, then the other. In a smooth, practiced motion, he twisted his upper body to the side just so, and the pack f...

All Christians are moral relativists
2008-05-12 08:29:00 By GeoffI tend to avoid writing about or discussing the topic of religion. In general, my unconventional views on the subject get me into a heated discussion with a zealous, but well meaning believer concerned with my eternal destiny or a mentally draining screaming match with a pretentious asshat who believes I worship Darwin and who seems convinced that atheism is just another religion (which is like saying that not playing sports is a sport). Despite this, I usually try to remain civil. After all, we are all entitled to believe whatever we want, right?HOWEVER! There are a few annoying arguments Christians use that quite frankly make about as much sense as a gay republican. Were I to go into all of them, I would be typing here for hours and hours. So, I will focus on one for now: Moral RelativityMoral relativity essentially states that analysis into whether an action is right or wrong should come from several facets of study, culture, context, usefulness, etc. This ideas lies in s...

Shoot, Kill, Lie, Repeat: America's New Moral Universe
2008-05-10 01:05:00 by Chris Floyd Tell me that this doesn't sound like something out of a history of Nazi tactics in World War II: The rules [of engagement]t explicitly allowed the killing of unarmed Iraqis under certain circumstances...Specifically, the snipers were allowed to shoot unarmed people running away from explosions or firefights....Of course, it's not unusual for innocent people to run from explosions. Didier, who has since been promoted to captain, said that "if that individual makes contact with you and then breaks contact of their own accord and disarms themselves while they are breaking contact, they are still an engageable target because they are not wounded, nor did they surrender." He explained, "They are only breaking contact so that they can engage coalition forces at a later time." In court, Sgt. Anthony Murphy, one of the snipers who was responsible for a questionable kill, testified that he interpreted this order about breaking contact so the...

Imagine a dialogue where Devdas says that, "Ma asked me to forget Paro, The world now askes me to forget drinking", without the word "drinking" in it. Wondering why all this imagination!!!! Thanks to our beloved health minister, Mr. Anbumoni Ramadoss, who these days have nothing to do. After having ousted his biggest rival Venugopal, the AIIMS chief, it seems he is short of work these days. So he thought why not see what the Indian film industry is doing these days. Isn't it surprising to see a health minister doing these foolish things. Shouldn't they set their own home right before playing a moral police on these silly things? Out very own netas are often seen eating Tobacco,...
A moral foundation
2008-05-07 19:06:00 Gerson at the WaPo: There are few things in American politics more irrationally ideological, more fanatically faith-based, than the accusation that Republicans are conducting a “war on science.” According to Hillary Clinton, the Bush administration has declared “open season on open inquiry.” “When I am president,” she promises, “scientific integrity will not be the exception; it will be the rule.” Which means, of course that you’ll tell Al Gore to sit down and shut up, right, Hill? I mean, ignoring, of course, all the stuff Bush has been able to accomplish, which Gerson does a fair job of scratching the surface of: The exceptions, in this case, are pretty exceptional: Elias Zerhouni, who has reformed the National Institutes of Health with widely praised efficiency; Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who helped set in motion large-scale AIDS treatment in Africa; Francis Collins of the Natio...

Pilihan Moral

British Author Barred from U.S. for "Moral Turpitude"
2008-04-17 06:53:00 by Jayne Lyn Stahl Something we don't hear about enough from the mainstream media, thanks to the cat fight that has become the Democratic Party nomination process, is not only what we are doing to our detainees, who's giving the thumbs-up to do it, but also this administration's quiet jihad against foreign scholars, and writers. Those who enter our borders for the purpose of giving readings, attending festivals, or otherwise entertaining us are treated in a most inhospitable, and often egregious, way. Such is the case with a British author who, last month, took a flight across the pond for the sole purpose of doing a reading to launch his recently published memoir. PEN American Center reports that Sebastian Horsley, author of "Dandy in the Underworld," flew from London's Heathrow Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport where he was denied entry into the United States. "It is of course a matter of grave concern to us when a writer is exlude...
Ninth Circuit Finds Counterfeiting Constitutes Crime of Moral Turpitude
2008-04-16 04:48:00 Senegal citizen Elimane Tall got involved in counterfeiting. In 2003, he pled guilty to one count of “counterfeit of a registered mark” in violation of California Penal Code § 350(a)(2), which imposes criminal penalties on any person who “willfully manufactures, intentionally sells, or knowingly possesses for sale any counterfeit of a mark registered with the Secretary of State or registered on the Principal Register of the United States Patent and Trademark Office…” In 2004, Mr. Tall pleaded guilty to nine new counts of “counterfeit of a registered mark” and one count of “counterfeit of a registered mark with a prior,” which landed him in prison. After serving his time, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security sought to have him deported under the Immigration and Nationality Act as an alien convicted of a crime of “moral turpitude.” The immigration judge adopted the government’s position that “fraud ...
The moral question of ethenol
2008-04-15 17:26:00 “The reality is that people are dying already,” said Jacques Diouf, of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). “Naturally people won’t be sitting dying of starvation, they will react,” he said. The UN says it takes 232kg of corn to fill a 50-litre car tank with ethanol. That is enough to feed a child for a year. Last week, the UN predicted “massacres” unless the biofuel policy is halted. A litle snippet from the Telegraph, this morning. And to think… all of this is because of the myth of global warming. The only moral thing to do? Open up more areas for oil drilling and refining. We must act now, this ia a crisis situation. After all, it’s for the Children.  Technorati Tags: drilling, Energy, ethenol, oil, starvation

Moral Equivalence
2008-04-11 14:08:00 Their country was under attack. On one quiet morning in the late summer, men flew airplanes into their cities and thousands died. These men came from a faraway land and the dead had done nothing to invite their wrath. Most of those who perished were apolitical, simply average people carrying out the daily rituals of their lives, unaware that this morning would be their last. The country's leaders were desperate. They had no idea where the next attack was coming from or how bad it would be. They viewed the men in the airplanes as vicious enemies, unworthy of humane consideration. They wanted to save their people from further fear and agony. In one of their prisons sat a young man who had worked with the attackers, helping them to plan and execute their assault. Maybe he knew something. Maybe he could provide some detail that would help them ward off the next attack. Maybe if they could break him, they could save hundreds or even thousands of their fellow citizens. Maybe they...

Mr Rochester's moral superiority?
2008-04-09 14:10:00 The Times re-examines the eternal debate, that is, do (female) looks matter? Jane Eyre of course is always a handy example: Where the plain are allowed to exist (Jane Eyre, Northanger Abbey) there is, alas, often a whiff of disingenous Ugly Betty-itis. It's implicitly clear that Jane and Mr Rochester's unflashy looks are a manifestation of some kind of moral superiority. Either way, looks have become a battleground. (Lisa Armstrong)Really, we wonder where in the book Rochester displays 'some kind of moral superiority'. If anything, the exact opposite could be said of him: trying to commit bigamy, taking on lovers, trying to persuade Jane to stay... yes, all of that is highly moral. Don't get us wrong, we are not saying here that Rochester is necessarily bad (as he himself says, he could easily have got rid of Bertha by locking her up somewhere cold and humid and not catering for her at all), only that he is not morally superior either by his - and Jane's - own admission.Someth...

Small Farmer Wins Moral Victory Over Monsanto
2008-04-02 16:41:00 (NaturalNews) Percy Schmeiser has a check for $660 and a Right Livelihood Award to prove that sometimes the little guy wins. In a modern version of the David vs. Goliath story, a 77 year-old Saskatchewan farmer and his wife are now considered folk heroes following settlement of their legal battle with agribusiness giant Monsanto Canada Inc., after the company sued them for patent violation of genetically engineered canola seeds in 1997.The Schmeisers were sued after plants from the genetically modified canola seeds were found on their farm near Bruno, Saskatchewan. The company claimed that the Schmeisers had violated its patent on the seeds, which had been genetically modified to resist Roundup herbicide. The couple was accused of knowingly planting the seeds without paying the royalty fees to Monsanto, which sought damages for $400,000.The Schmeiser's claimed they did not plant the seeds, and argued that the seeds blew onto their property from a nearby road or neighboring farm.In 2...

Pride and Prejudice: Jane Austen's Moral Vision
2008-03-30 15:20:00 Jane Austen is not a proclaimed moralist. Unlike Fielding, her aim is not to propagate the morality. She believes in art for the sake of art. She is the pioneer of the novels. Therefore, her plots are well-knit. Her main interest lies in irony and there is a hidden significance of morality as we come across her moral vision in her novels through irony.Jane Austen is in a favour of social prosperity than individual. She upholds the organic unity of society. She stresses that the duty of human beings owe to others, to society and maintains that individual desires have to be sub-ordinate to the large scale. Lydia-Wickham elopement is passionate and irresponsible. It shows that how society?s harmony is disrupted and how others lives are ruined by the selfish act of the individual. On the other hand the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane and Bingley bring happiness and stability to everyone, not simply to themselves. She discusses individuals ?short comings?. Even the hero and heroin...
Secret Behind The Success Of Marriage

Editor: "Sir. It's amazingly unbelievable. How did you make this possible? "Husband recalling his old honeymoon days said:"We had been to Shimla for honeymoon after marriage.Having selected the horse riding finally, we both started the ride on different horses. My horse was pretty okay but the horse on which my wife was riding seemed to be a crazy one. On the way ahead, that horse jumped suddenly, making my wife topple over.Recovering her position from the ground, she patted the horse's back and said "This is your first time".She again climbed the horse and continued with the ride. After a while, it happened again. This time she again kept calm and said "This is your second time" and continued....

So WK has decided to move on and is now going after Big Tobacco, Big Media and Eye Weekly accusing them of being guilty of an "immoral double standard" for daring to advertise a legal product namely, heaven help us, Cigarettes. Warren in his typically illiberal fashion is calling for action: "In the next few days, I will be developing a campaign to lobby governments, at all levels, to withdraw advertising from Eye Weekly." Eye Weekly's Marc Weisblott snaps back at Kinsella's bilious discharge proving once again that Kinsella's own moral standards are as malleable as Silly-Putty:Warren Kinsella's Standards.....What he fails to mention is that, when Kinsella’s column Feds ran in EYE WEEKLY under an anonymous byline — he disclosed himself as the writer in the aforementioned National Post column â€...

Crazy night and a story with(out?) a moral
2008-03-16 12:04:00 Yesterday I woke up early and went to the market with Sabrina to buy grapefruits. She brought from Buenos Aires a special kind of tea, some Argentinian traditional herb called Yierba Mate. Tastes shitty unless you drink it from a grapefruit with a hole in it. And then we made plans for the evening to go out a little bit, as we never went out partying together and it's high time we did it. And, boy, what a night we had!First, we started with an Irish pub to pay homage to our beloved green friends as they were celebrating St. Patrick's day in their own special way. We blended it.
