Colts decide to not completely ruin my weekend I'm starting out with good news today. And the Bears won, too. From Yahoo: Headed for another early-season loss, Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts staged a stunning comeback thanks to a colossal collapse by the Houston Texans. Manning's late-game poise-and the lack of it for Houston quarterback Sage Rosenfels-helped the Colts scored 21 points in a late span of 2:10. Two touchdowns came thanks to fumbles by Rosenfels, then Indianapolis intercepted Rosenfels' last-ditch comeback attempt for a 31-27 win Sunday. On to baseball Lou thoroughly explains how the Cubs lost. There's also some mention of neither Soriano nor Ramirez showing up. From the Daily Herald. But Piniella seemed to know, or seemed to sense, that his team could be had in the playoffs. Asked after Saturday night's loss if he was shocked, he said no. So how did a team go from scoring 855 runs in the regular season to scoring 6 in three playoff games for the second...

Help us, Rich. You're our only hope. Lou is done with verbal communication From the Daily Herald: "This is not time for words anymore. This is time to go out on the field and play to the best of your ability and relax and get the job done. "That's it. It's simple. You go out there and you play the best you possibly can, and you win, and you play on Sunday. And if you don't, as long as you played a good baseball game, that's all you can expect." Unfortunately, Ryan Theriot didn't get the memo: "Our mind-set is we're down two games, and we have to win," shortstop Ryan Theriot said. No shit!? Now, back to Lou: "I've tried to downplay these playoffs where everybody says World Series and this and the other," he said, referring to the notion that the Cubs' year is a disappointment if they don't reach or win the World Series. "I've tried to downplay that. You've got to play on the field. "Forget all the talking, pep talks and conversations and everything else. You go out and ...

Carl goes to bed, Cubs don't come back From the Daily Herald: The defense let starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano down, committing 2 errors in the Dodgers' 5-run second inning, with DeRosa and first baseman Derrek Lee committing miscues. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who refused to talk after the game, committed a harmless error in the fourth. Shortstop Ryan Theriot completed the dubious cycle with an error in the ninth. "I don't think you can win 97 ballgames playing that way," Piniella said. "It wasn't good baseball. In fact, the last two days, they've probably been the two worst games we've played all year from a walking and errors standpoint. It wasn't fun to watch, I can tell you that." Soriano to nay-sayers: "You're right!" From the Daily Herald: "When I swing at strikes, I hit the ball hard," Soriano said. "When I don't hit the ball hard is when I swing at bad pitches. I want to be more selective at home plate, swing at strikes and see what happens." Soriano flied to ...

"Don't give up any more salamis and we'll be fine" Last I saw of carl, he was drowning his sorrows with a yo ho ho and 8 bottles of beer, so I'll take over headlines today. I guess everyone knows by now that we lost. The Cubs brought a heavy hitter to Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon, asking the Rev. James L. Greanias, a Greek Orthodox priest from St. Iakovos Church in Valparaiso, Ind., to spread holy water around the dugout to remove an alleged curse that has hovered over the ballclub since its last World Series appearance in 1945. But after Ryan Dempster couldn't find the plate and their hitters took another siesta in a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of their National League Division Series, the Cubs might want to get out of the curse-removal business and concentrate on the game itself. And Steve Rosenbloom points out the obvious: This might not be the end of the world, but Cubs fans can see it from here. The Cubs spent six months working and hitting and pi...

I'm late for work, so you get seriously stunted headlines. Hope you can find something to talk about. Cubs pick up Lou's 2010 option From the Daily Herald: Lou Piniella the retiring type? Hardly. Less than a week after speculation surfaced in New York that Piniella may retire as Cubs manager if they win the World Series, the Cubs on Tuesday picked up their club option on Piniella for the 2010 season. Piniella, 65, signed a three-year, $10 million deal in the fall of 2006. The option year is worth $4 million. "When (team chairman) Crane Kenney talked about a possible extension a few weeks ago, what they were talking about was picking up the option," Piniella said. "That's what they did. I'm thankful, and I look forward to a couple more years here." Pie makes roster over Hufflepuff From the Trib: Felix Pie earned the Cubs' final NL Division Series roster spot Tuesday as they decided to go with a speedy defensive outfielder instead of slugger Micah Hoffpauir. Pie hit only .243 ...

Bruce Miles gets top spot because he starts his article with a Harry Caray quote From the Daily Herald: When legendary broadcaster Harry Caray sensed that the home team was in trouble, he'd bellow, "There's danger here, Cherie." The Cubs aren't in trouble. With the best record in the National League, they'll be favored to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League division series, which begins Wednesday evening at Wrigley Field. So where's the danger? But the Dodgers present danger on several fronts. Here is a look at some of those areas and how the Cubs can ward off that danger: The Manny factor: Left fielder Manny Ramirez remains one of the most dangerous hitters in the game, and he has 24 postseason home runs. When the Dodgers traded for Ramirez on July 31, they were hoping for an offensive spark. That's just what they got, as Ramirez hit 17 homers, drove in 53 and batted .396 with a .489 on-base percentage and a .743 slugging percentage in 54 games. To avoid the ...

I couldn't resist Cubs let Brewers make postseason I wonder if this is an attempt to further ruin the pitching arms of Ben Sheets and CC Sabathia. From the Daily Herald: The Cubs went with a pitcher-by-committee system, and it didn't work out badly until late in the game. Angel Guzman started and pitched 2 scoreless innings. The Cubs got an unearned run against Sabathia in the second. Cubs reliever Michael Wuertz walked in a run in the seventh. Howry gave up a one-out single to Mike Cameron in the eighth. After Ray Durham flied out, Braun crushed the first pitch over the wall in left. "No, I was just trying to hit the ball hard," Braun said when asked if he was thinking homer. "We've just got to find a way to continue to play." All in all, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he was pleased with the overall effort of his pitchers. The Cubs finished the season with a record of 97-64, the first time the Cubs have posted a 97-win season since the 1945 pennant winners went 98-56. "Our kid...

What say you, Lou? From the Daily Herald: "We're in a little bit of what you'd call a transition position right now, but we'll be fine by the time Wednesday comes along," he said. "We'll get everything back in place. We're doing the best we can, but right now, you've got to have a little patience." There were a couple of things that had Piniella concerned: ? Catcher Geovany Soto left the game in the sixth inning when he fouled off a pitch. He felt some pain in his troublesome left hand but later said he was fine and that he could play this weekend. ? The bullpen got a bit of a beating. Sean Marshall (3-5) took the loss. Jeff Samardzija gave up a single that allowed a run to score. And most worrisome for Piniella, Chad Gaudin balked and gave up a 3-run homer to Rickie Weeks in the seventh inning. "We've been trying to get Gaudin ready for postseason, and that's not coming along very well," Piniella said. And from theTrib: "We had a balk, a catcher's interference, bad baser...

HoffPOWER From the Daily Herald: The Cubs claim they still have questions heading into the playoffs. They may have found one answer Thursday night in Micah Hoffpauir. Even though the Cubs suffered a 7-6, ninth-inning loss to the New York Mets at rainy Shea Stadium, manager Lou Piniella was gushing about the performance of Hoffpauir, who may have sewn up a spot on the roster for the division series. The 28-year-old rookie went 5-for-5, including his first 2 major-league home runs. Hoffpauir also doubled home a run and singled twice, driving in 5 runs. "Impressive," said Piniella, who always perks up when a young player hits. "We're looking, we really are. We're looking for a couple spots. We're looking for a little offense. Put it this way: He'll be in the lineup tomorrow in Milwaukee." Hoffpauir was the Cubs' minor-league player of the year. He had cups of coffee with the big club earlier this year, and he didn't want to get ahead of himself about the postseason. "I'm not go...

Run Johan run! Even the reporters don't care Cubs not real worried about Mets The only question remaining for the Cubs over the final five regular-season games is how manager Lou Piniella will slot his starters for the first round of the postseason. No matter which way Piniella goes, it's bound to generate some controversy. "I think we all just want the ball," left-hander Ted Lilly said. "I haven't asked the other guys what they feel about where they're slotted, but everyone wants a chance to hit and pitch and be involved some way." After the Cubs lost 6-2 Tuesday night to New York at Shea Stadium, leaving the Mets 11/2 games behind division-leading Philadelphia and one game ahead of Milwaukee in the wild-card race, the focus shifted to enigmatic right-hander Carlos Zambrano, who makes his final regular-season start Wednesday. of Course everyone wants to talk about Zambrano Z Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano, honored Tuesday as the National League Latino MVP Pitcher of 2007, was pr...

Hey, we won! And not only was Marquis not completely useless, he was kinda helpful. Oh, and we clinched homefield advantage Marquis, who once again will be the odd man out in a playoff rotation, was a one-man demolition crew Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at Shea Stadium, the Cubs' last before the orange-and-blue monstrosity will be destroyed. He smashed a grand slam during a six-run fourth inning that sent him to his 11th win and the Cubs to a 9-5 victory, assuring the Lou Crew of home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs. "It's a step," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "It's an important step. You can see that home field has been very important all year." And aaaaaahhhhh, sweet, sweet karma (not irony, Alanis. See the difference?) The Mets, in danger of a second straight late-season collapse, dropped 21/2 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East and had their wild-card lead reduced to one game over Milwaukee. They have ace Johan Santana set ...

From the Sun-Times: Cubs not putting crappy team out there every day. The lineup will look different tonight when the Cubs open a four-game series in New York. ''We're going to play a regular lineup,'' Piniella said. ''We'll have to play as representative a team as we can. I can't let all these [regular] guys sit.'' Piniella understands the integrity issue involving the playoff races, but he has other reasons for spacing out rest for his players. Decisions have yet to be made about the playoff roster, and the starting rotation carries questions of a different sort -- such as, will Carlos Zambrano or Dempster be the Game 1 pitcher? ''I'm not making any comment as to what our rotation will be,'' Piniella said flatly. What is certain is that the starters will be shortened in each of their last regular-season turns. Dempster threw only 67 pitches Sunday, with his next start scheduled for Friday in Milwaukee. From the Trib: Phil tells us what we already know. The Cubs mi...

Cubs win From the Daily Herald: It felt good to a Cubs team that won last year's Central title after digging a huge hole for itself early in the season before furiously rallying to win the division on the final Friday of the season, only to go three-and-out to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the division series. This year, the Cubs got out in front early and stayed there. The clinching victory was No. 93 against 60 losses. "You know what I like about this year's team?" asked manager Lou Piniella after enduring numerous champagne showers. "We played ahead all year. You've got to learn to play ahead. It's not easy. And the second thing is our September schedule was a playoff schedule. You're not going to find a rougher schedule than we've been through this September. That's a tough finishing schedule. "It wasn't easy. That's why I've been preaching caution all along." ... "We're enjoying it," said Lilly, who reached 16 victories for the first time in his career. "We're celebr...

Zambrano throws yes-hitter From the Trib: Cubs manager Lou Piniella had to walk a fine line Friday. On one hand, he expressed sympathy to starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano, whose grandmother died this week, forcing Zambrano to make a quick trip to Venezuela on Wednesday. He returned Thursday. On the other hand, Piniella wasn't pleased with Zambrano's comportment as he tried to remove Zambrano from the game after just 1 innings on the way to a 12-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. As Piniella neared the mound, Zambrano began to walk off, a no-no in Piniella's and most managers' worlds. "It's not the easiest thing in the world," Piniella said of Zambrano's situation. "I didn't get him in trouble out there. All I expect when I take a pitcher out of a ballgame is wait and stay on the mound, give me the baseball. No more and no less." So Z, what have you to say for yourself? For his part, Zambrano was making his first start since no-hitting the Astros on Sunday ni...

Chicago Cubs: Great team, or the greatest team? From the Daily Herald: Wrigley Field, a place that had just been partying like it was 1999, suddenly was nearly void of noise. Out of the dugout popped Cubs manager Lou Piniella for a quick chat. "Lou went out there and asked Kerry what he wanted to do," Soto said. Their conversation went something like this: "I'll get three strikeouts," Wood told his skipper. "No, just get three groundballs," Piniella said. End of discussion. And three batters later, it was end of threat. And a few minutes after that it was end of game as Derrek Lee drove in pinch runner Jason Marquis with a single to center to cap a crazy day that saw the Cubs' magic number to capture the NL Central crown reduced to 2, courtesy of their 7-6 win. "The beauty of baseball is you never know what's going to happen until that final out," Piniella said. "It was a heck of a ballgame, and I can say that because we won. Cubs get to CC, hold on late From the Daily Herald: The Cubs hit Sabathia hard early, handing the Milwaukee ace his first National League loss after 9 wins. "I think we have to feel very special because everybody knows who CC is and what he has done in the National League," Alfonso Soriano said. The Cubs scored once in the first on doubles by Soriano and Derrek Lee. It became 3-0 in the third on singles by Ryan Theriot and Lee, followed by Aramis Ramirez's line 2-run double into the left-field corner. Soriano's line drive home run to left in the seventh off Sabathia made it 4-2, and the Cubs got a big insurance run in the eighth on pinch hitter Henry Blanco's RBI single. Prince Fielder hit 2 home runs for the Brewers but struck out looking at a wicked Kerry Wood slider in the ninth inning with the tying run at third. "I don't think anybody could have hit that pitch, not after four (fastballs) at 97," Lee said. "I think I kind of got away with one there," Wood said. "It looked l...

Ted: We love you. Ronny: It's not your fault Flirtatious Ted gives no-no a whirl In the end, he decided it wasn't for him. From the Daily Herald: Lilly joked Sunday about the tough act he had to follow, and for a while it looked like his stuff was good enough for the Cubs to make it two no-hitters in two days. As it was, the Cubs set a major-league record. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 1 hit is the fewest allowed by one team over two games in baseball history. Lilly admitted to thinking about the no-hitter. "About in the sixth," he said. "I knew even at that point there was a lot of work to do. It doesn't get any easier the closer you get. I had fun out there. I made pitches. Guys made some great plays and made it interesting." Of greatest interest to the Cubs was the job they did in this makeup series, which became necessary because Hurricane Ike blew through Houston over the weekend. The Cubs improved to 90-58, putting them at 90 for the first time since the 1998 c...

Well done, Big Z Move over, Milt Pappas Cecil Cooper, you can suck it. You have only Drayton McLane to blame. From the Daily Herald: Zambrano pitched the first no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs in 36 years, returning from a sore rotator cuff to shut down the Houston Astros 5-0 Sunday night in a game relocated because of Hurricane Ike. "I guess I'm back!" Zambrano woofed. Pitching for the first time since Sept. 2, and cheered on by thousands of Cubs fans, Zambrano stopped a Houston team that had not played since Thursday. The storm forced baseball to move two games from Texas to Miller Park and the weary Astros arrived only hours before the first pitch. The Cubs, meanwhile, faced a short bus ride. Plenty of their faithful followed them up I-94, once again turning the Brewers' ballpark into "Wrigley North." This was baseball's first neutral-site no-hitter, the Elias Sports Bureau said. "It was a long travel day and Hurricane Ike," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said. "That's what I put...

Wrigley North Play Ball! From the Daily Herald: Look for right-hander Carlos Zambrano, who hasn't pitched since taking himself out of a game Sept. 2 because of shoulder pain, to start for the Cubs tonight. Jason Marquis is the likely starter for Monday. The Astros will be the home team for both games, and the Brewers say tickets will range from $25 to $60. They urge fans to go online at brewers.com and use the "print at home" option to avoid long lines. The Brewers said seating will be in the field and loge levels only. The Astros had been hopeful of getting one or two games in this weekend or today and Monday at Minute Maid Park, and they seemed adamant in their opposition to playing at Miller Park, which is about 90 miles from Chicago. But no other options emerged. The Cubs did not want to travel through bad weather to get to Houston. Other options mentioned since last week were St. Louis, Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Cubs begin new series winning streak From the Daily Herald: The Cubs' 3-2 victory Thursday night over the Cardinals gave the Cubs two out of three in this series, putting them 5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. Once again, the Cubs (88-58) excelled in two of three aspects of the game, pitching and defense, while the hitting struggled. The Cubs got a quality start from Rich Harden (5-1), who worked 6 innings after having not pitched since Aug. 29. Kerry Wood ended the game by getting the dangerous Albert Pujols to pop out. Wood stranded two and earned his 30th save in the process. The Cubs also got big catches from Alfonso Soriano in left field and defensive replacement Kosuke Fukudome in right, who robbed Felipe Lopez at the wall in the eighth. Lilly kicks ass, takes names From the Daily Herald: Lilly pitched 8 innings of 1-run ball before giving way to Kerry Wood, who made things interesting by giving up a 2-run homer to Ryan Ludwick and getting his 29th save. Not only did Lilly seemed to get stronger as the night went on, he seemed to energize himself in the second inning when he crashed into Cards catcher Yadier Molina while trying to score from third base on a grounder. Lilly was out, but eventually, so was Molina, who had to leave the game in the fifth because of a bruised left thigh. On top of it all, Lilly claims not to have known about Piniella's comments of the previous night. "He might be over 100, but he's still got a lot of fire in him," Lilly said when informed. Piniella laughed when informed of Lilly's "compliment." During his own postgame session, Piniella heaped praise on his pitcher, who improved to 14-9. "You don't have enough big of a lead in September to play ball like that. Teams that play baseball like that invariably get caught no matter how big their lead. You've got to stay aggressive. Panic Time! Dave van Dyck gives us all reason to worry obviously someone has stock in Prozac Panic: Ugh, that schedule: toughest of any National League contender. All 19 remaining games are against teams with winning records and all those teams have postseason hopes, making none of them pushovers. And only six of the games are at the supposed Friendly Confines, which haven't been all that friendly of late. Even worse, the Brewers have three left against Pittsburgh, which they have beaten 11 of 12 times. Not to panic: The Cubs ended August with baseball's second-biggest lead, which is why you play 162 games. Sure, there are six games remaining against the Brewers, but the Cubs swept the last four-gamer-in Milwaukee. Cubs fans can take heart from the 2005 champion White Sox, who had a 71/2-game lead on Sept. 9 which slipped to 11/2 on Sept. 24. Monday Morning Links and Other Thoughts
2008-09-08 15:54:00
It?s so nice to have football back! To see the Steelers have an impressive season debut in defeating Houston. To know that there are games on for approximately 10 hours from Sunday early afternoon to Sunday night. To walk around the grocery store on a Sunday and see people wearing their football jerseys. (Although why was one guy wearing an A.J. Hawk Packers? jersey when the team doesn?t play until Monday?) To follow your fantasy football teams and hope that Terrell Owens can score big points while his quarterback Tony Romo does not (or worse to root for Reggie Bush for one league and against him in another). Welcome back professional football!Have you watched any football highlights from yesterday? If so, you may have noticed every announcer gushing over Brett Favre?s touchdown pass where he threw a terrible ball on a fourth down that somehow manager to find an open receiver. It?s only a matter of time (probably next week) when that same pass is intercepted. On to the links?...

Lou is not a happy camper. Even for those who don't believe the Cubs are eternally doomed, Sunday would give them pause. After losing seven of eight games, including Sunday's 4-3 stinker to the Reds, it is understandable that the mentality has evolved into a sky-is-falling September swoon. Can anyone put things in perspective? If manager Lou Piniella could, he certainly didn't try Sunday. He refused to meet with the media for the first time this season. So it was up to team elder Derrek Lee to assess the mood. "We still can't panic," Lee said. "We're still in good shape. We just need to be better. We're a better team than this, and we would like to play better. You don't ever want to play under your talent level, and that's what we're doing right now. "We're in a funk. We're in a skid. We've just got to fight out of it." Could you maybe be in a little less of a funk?  You know, one where you don't lose 2 of 3 to the Reds? For those that missed it Caution: may cause...

That's more like it Cubs snap into shape A day too late. From the Daily Herald: Cubs manager Lou Piniella issued a warning before Saturday night's 14-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. "These last 20 games or 21 games, I'm going to try to play a lineup that can win a ballgame that day," he said. "That's all I'm going to do. I've played everybody all year. Everybody's gotten opportunities all year. "And now we're going to try to play a lineup that can win a baseball game that particular night. These guys want to stay in the lineup, swing the bats." It seems the Cubs got the message. One guy who really got it was left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who hit solo homers in the third and fifth innings and followed it with a 3-run blast in the sixth. It was the third time Soriano went deep three times in a game, and it helped the Cubs (86-56) snap a six-game losing streak. The 14 runs matched their amount for the entire six-game skid. More on Lou's new-look lineup Why didn't he try ...

Generoso y elegante.Imprescindible 2008.Por Rotch1. The Cubs are stinky, like my diaper. I'm filling in for Carl today, since he personally decided to help extend the Cubs' losing streak in Cincinnati.  Carl, you are not allowed at any more games this year.  Unless, of course, you've got a great picture of Rich Harden's ass. Lou changes his mind and decides to go to the game instead of visiting secdelahc. From the Trib: "We actually Googled the trip and we were Googled to East Liverpool, Pa., evidently. Who in the heck knows?" Piniella said. "On the [printout] sheet we had Cincinnati-Liverpool. And I'm thinking to myself, I was in Cincinnati for three years and I don't remember a Liverpool around the area." With Sinatro driving, Piniella took a short nap. "When I woke up we were about 80-90 miles from Cleveland. I said no, I don't think so. So we backtracked and came down through Columbus and got here at 5 o'clock. We left Chicago at 8 in the morning so we should have been here at 2 [p.m.] "I probably shouldn't ha...

Derrek Lee, what's your major malfunction? From the Daily Herald: Consider Lee's numbers: ? His last home run, his 18th, came on Aug. 22. It was his first since July 27. ? He has 3 homers in his last 63 games after hitting 15 in his first 73. Lee's arsenal lately has been mainly singles, a few doubles, and an awful lot of double-play balls. What's going on? Who better to ask than former Cubs great, sweet swinging Billy Williams? The Hall of Famer has been keeping an eye on Lee and doesn't think the first baseman's swing is too far off. "Sometimes you get into a groove and you hit a lot of groundballs," Williams said. "I don't see anything he's doing differently. "He's hitting line drives, too. He might be leaning a bit with his eyes. He's not getting the ball airborne. But you can't steer it, you just hit it." Could it be the lingering effects of the wrist injury Lee suffered a few years back? "I don't think so," Williams said. "He put up some power numbers last year." ...

The sky is falling From the Trib: In the case of Zany Z and the mysterious missing MRI, no news is not good news. The silence surrounding the pain that is said to be in Carlos Zambrano's valuable right shoulder could speak volumes and the Cubs seemed to be preparing for the worst Wednesday, that Zambrano could be out for a long period, perhaps the rest of the season. Manager Lou Piniella, who served as team spokesman, said he knew little of Zambrano's examination by team orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo, why Zambrano skipped his MRI appointment or how long Zambrano would be out, although Sean Marshall will start in his place Sunday. And Piniella finally revealed what had been suspected all along: That another starter, Rich Harden, "has had some discomfort also." Cubs lose, Dempster tries to give us perspective From the Daily Herald: "It's frustrating for everybody," Dempster said. "It's frustrating for me because I didn't feel I did as good as I could have tonight. It's frustratin...

Please, Bob, feel free to eat your own shoulder. Z's arm status down(up?)graded from dead to not feeling good From the Trib: Zambrano left Tuesday night's 9-7, 11-inning loss to Houston after five innings and 86 pitches and "told pitching coach [Larry Rothschild] he wasn't feeling good," according to manager Lou Piniella. Wasn't feeling good, as in ... "It has to be in his arm," Piniella said. "I'll let you know [more] tomorrow." Zambrano will visit Cubs orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo on Wednesday, but it's obvious he will be shut down for several days, which would put his effectiveness for the playoffs in doubt. "If he can pitch, he'll pitch," Piniella said. "If not, we'll put [ Sean] Marshall in the rotation and go from there." Cubs redefining expectations again From the Daily Herald: While the Cubs banged out 14 hits on Tuesday night, including 4 home runs and 3 doubles, they still failed in several critical offensive situations late in a 9-7 defeat to the Houston Astros ...

Cubs delay 2008 June swoon From the Trib: Marquis (9-8) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out eight, his highest total as a Cub. But the Cubs' sluggish offense was clueless against Oswalt, and has gone 28 consecutive innings without an extra-base hit since Alfonso Soriano's home run in the eighth inning of Friday's win over Philadelphia. They've hit 27 singles since then, scoring only five runs. Piniella inserted Kosuke Fukudome into the No. 2 hole in an effort to jump-start the struggling right fielder, hoping he'd see a few more fastballs with Lee batting behind him. "It's a good spot to hit in," Piniella said. But Fukudome went 0-for-4, including a ninth-inning force out at second against closer Jose Valverde with runners on first and second and one out. Piniella had red-hot lefty hitter Micah Hoffpauir on the bench and available to pinch-hit, but Piniella opted to stick with Fukudome, who hit .193 in August and came in batting .231 since the Al...

Cubs stink for second day in a row A 20-8 August isn't so bad, I suppose. From the Trib: "There's nothing wrong with the effort," a testy manager Lou Piniella said after Sunday's 5-3 loss. "Give the Phillies credit. We're not supposed to win every day. It's not that easy. "I think we spoiled people and we got people used to [winning]. But every day things don't go your way in this business. That's why you play 162 games, and that's why you play six months." But with their second straight home loss - for only the second time since the opening series - the Cubs had their nine-series winning streak broken. Cubs hitters left 19 men on base in the last two days. Their last 23 hits have been singles, going back to Friday's homer by Alfonso Soriano - and he left four runners on base in his final two at-bats Sunday. "We believe [our] team is very good," Soriano said. "We have to play better. We left a lot of runners in scoring position, so I have to start concentrating a little bit...

You know, good looks will only get you so far. . . I guess I'm up with the headlines this morning, so these are going to be quick. The Cubs don't want us to panic: It was a very rare scene in the Cubs' clubhouse Saturday: Quiet. Usually the stereo is blaring and players are jabbering at each other. But here it was eerily subdued, because the Cubs (gasp) lost a home game. It doesn't happen very often, just 17 times in the last 67 games at Wrigley Field, but this time the Phillies prevailed 5-2 as the Cubs had no comeback to counter them. "It's going to happen," losing pitcher Ted Lilly said. "We play a lot of games and there are a lot of good teams out there." Aramis Ramirez didn't seem overly concerned. "You can't win every single game," he said. "We'll come back [Sunday] and try to win a series." Technically, you COULD win every game, but I guess you guys choose not to. Hrumph. Lou warns us not to get too excited. .. Others might be giddy over the Cubs' success, but no...

Will the Cubs ever lose again? From the Daily Herald: The postseason is more than a month away, but everything around the Cubs these days is looking, feeling and smelling like the playoffs. Friday's 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field wasn't the prettiest the Cubs have played this year, but they found a way to win and improve to 85-50. They've come from behind to beat the Phillies twice in two days. On Friday, Alfonso Soriano's seventh-inning solo homer broke a 2-2 tie after the Cubs rallied earlier from a 2-0 deficit. While the Cubs are cruising in the National League Central, they're putting some serious hurt on the Phillies, who are in a fight with the Mets for the East lead. "They're a really good team," said Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa, who had 2 of the Cubs' 7 walks. "These first two games are an indication of what playoff baseball is like when two teams are fighting to get there. We caught some breaks today and were able to come out on top....
