California Foreclosures, Fire and Mosquitoes
2008-07-24 14:24:00
California is in a hostile situation. Two main unavoidable reasons behind this situation are forest fires and an increasing rate of foreclosure. No way, the state is in any condition to fight against these two. Unfortunately, both of them raise the chance of spreading of the West Nile Virus, another alarming factor to the state. ...

Listerine... Mosquitoes, even MacGuyver would be proud!
2008-05-15 06:08:00
Ok this is something that I just read and had to post about because its something so simple yet amazing that it needs to be discussed. The guys over at Keelynet posted about an article at BreitBart about using Listerine as a one stop Mosquito repellant/killer/healer. You see they discovered that if you get some medicinal type Listerine (yes the mouth wash), the regular Dollar Store no name brand type works as well, perhaps not as good but it works. The article writer says that he was at a party getting eaten alive by mosquitoes when a man sprayed the lawn and deck with Listerine in a mist, and all of the mosquitos vanished. In fact they go on with saying that spraying it around doors and windows keeps the mosquitoes out and will even kill the mosquitoes on contact. But then again most liquids will since well... their normally pretty small. Considering the low cost of Listerine ($1.50-$2.00 for a giant bottle) using it seems to be a pretty easy and cheap way to deter some mosquito...
France Fears Plague of Mosquitoes in the South
2008-05-09 10:34:00
From the guardian: “Authorities in southern France fear a possible mosquito invasion in tourist resorts this summer and blame EU regulations which prevent them from using the most efficient insecticide. X-Bugs? Genetically modified mosquitoes? Barisan Nasional playing God?
2008-04-28 04:00:00
I was really surprised when I first read about this yesterday. I didn?t know that Malaysia is playing with God?s creations to such extent!I wonder what would be next. Genetically modified pigs that look cute and adorable?Anyhow, there is nothing wrong with genetic engineering in Islam if we go by the following Fatwa issued on the 17th of September 2006 by IslamWeb Dot Net. I do like to ask the government one thing though, can they guarantee that those genetically modified mosquitoes would not affect our living hood, environment and ecosystem in some other mysterious ways? There is no religious prohibition for using artificial insemination or what is called genetic engineering in plants and animals eugenics, if this does not lead to any harm. The Islamic Fiqh Committee in its fifth conference passed a resolution about genetic engineering. The sixth article of this resolution reads: "It is permissible to use the instruments of genetic engineering and its means in animal reproduction an...

Mosquitoes & sweat
2008-03-19 18:42:00
Now Dr. Vosshall, with her colleagues Mathias Ditzen and Maurizio Pellegrino, has uncovered DEET?s secret. It does indeed have something to do with smell: it jams odorant receptors in insect nervous systems, in effect masking odors that would ordinarily attract the bugs. ? Scientists have figured out how DEET, a commonly-used insect repellent, really works. Read more in The Secret of DEET? It Masks Odors That Usually Attract Bugs in the New York Times. Being my children's body guard from wicked mosquitoes! Grrrr.. I was just too sure that my moz-catcher-lamp (no 1 on picture) would do this task and attract them! It doesnt work AT ALL! I knew there WAS one moz here just before we slept at 10PM,so I sprayed children with moz repellent (no 2),but at 2AM they started scratching. Argh! I switched on the light, spreaded another brand of repellent (no 3) plus a balm (no 4) on the bites and hei! I got one 3B(big belly bloody) moz near clay's head! No time to be happy, i saw cliff scratched and one tiny skinny bitty moz flied so fast. My eyes became a radar, and i eyed that moz on our bed header. I tiptoed slowly and tapped! KILL MOSQUITOES WITH YOUR COMPUTER
2007-12-07 16:25:00
Stop using chemical based Insecticides to kill mosquitoes, because you might kill yourself.Download these Anti Mosquito software to repel those annoying insects and be safer & greenerHow does it work?Dragonflies are the mortal enemy for mosquitoes and in flight they generate sound frequencies (approximately) between 67 Hz and 45 Hz, depending on their sizes.56 Hz is a good average number in between those frequencies. Your PC sound card and speakers will work well for this purpose. There are many sound and tone generator programs available on the internet for both the Mac and Windows PC. Setup your computer with the sound/tone generator program running and then play the sound through your computer speakers. The speakers can be aimed directionally for complete room coverage. The sound level on the speakers should be adjusted so it is barely audible. This arrangement can be setup in a bedroom where you would like to have the window open but are worried about mosquitoes. One speaker ...
On Mosquitoes
2007-10-24 15:14:00
Mosquitoes have probably spoiled more camping trips that any other one thing. The best tents have mosquito net or cheese cloth fronts which may be held close to the ground by a stick on the bottom. Perhaps the easiest way to secure protection is for each boy to take along a few yards of cotton mosquito netting and by means of curved sticks build a canopy over his bed. A smoky fire called a "smudge" will sometimes keep the pests away from the neighbourhood of the tent or if we build it in the tent will drive them out, but the remedy is almost as bad as the disease. As a rule they will only be troublesome at night and the net over our bed will enable us to sleep in peace. The most common "dope" used in the woods to keep off mosquitoes is called oil of citronella. It has a very pungent odour that the mosquitoes do not like and the chances are that you will not like it either. At the same time it may be a good plan to take a small bottle along. You may safely count on finding mosquit...
Mosquitoes, bug bites and MRSA in Jamaica
2007-10-22 20:19:00
Original content from Jamaicamax.com I had people ask me about my bug bites in Jamaica and what they could do to prevent the nasty infections I got. I’ll say that this summer was the worse I have ever seen bugs and mosquitoes in Negril and they really did eat us up horribly. My youngest son Robby has some scarring on his legs much like some of the older street hustlers around here and its sad really. I’m hoping he’s young enough he grows out of them but i fear he’ll have some long term marking. We all got bitten by mosquitoes but he got it the worse I think. I’m beginning to believe I had a MRSA infection that made my bug bites worse because I began to notice that they took weeks to heal when it should have been much less. Kinda scary I may have had a deadly infection and thought it was fricking bug bites but the article below just about seals it for me. I treated my own wounds by lancing and draining, I thought they were spider bites but found no spi...

Why mosquitoes are a problem
2007-09-13 09:29:00
I try to keep the walls of the room where I sleep white, light, and above all bright. While it may sound poetic, there exists some hard logic for this during the hotter months of the year. Pests called mosq... mosq... mosquitoes, yes, fly around my ear, and bite me on the head when I am trying to sleep. It's not funny. The amusement becomes even less when I turn on the light in an attempt to crush their fragile bodies, and they manage to win the game by flying away and vanishing disappointing invisibly to the alternate mosquito universes. If you, or I, keep the walls light, then when such a beast lands, it can be easily spotted. Don't even think about getting a clear view of a mosquito if it lands on some sort of dark poster, tile, or other sort of wall covering. The only way to have an advantage over these creatures is to lighten up your walls. It's a fact.I will now tell you some more amazing things about these creatures. Firstly, did you know that if you eat bananas, you are mo...
Do you know why mosquitoes bite certain people?
2007-09-03 16:50:00
Prof. Know Why answers: It’s strange, but amazingly true that mosquitoes may not bite all the people in the same place. And only a selective set of people may fall prey to these tiny blood suckers that put millions of lives at stake by spreading malaria - the most prevalent life-threatening disease in the world. Scientists have worked out the answers why and how mosquitoes make a beeline for certain people and leave others almost untouched. Specific cells in one of the three organs that make up the mosquito’s nose are tuned to identify the different chemicals that make up human body odor. To the mosquito, some people’s sweat simply smells better than others because of the proportions of the carbon dioxide, octenol and other compounds that make up body odor. It’s those people who are most likely to be bitten. Mosquitoes use three organs to smell and taste – a feathery antenna which can identify a wide range of different chemicals, a proboscis used for short rang...
Mosquitoes wait years for the rains to come
2007-09-03 04:02:00
Without water mosquitoes cannot reproduce. It stimulates the development of eggs into larvae, and provides the medium in which the larvae swim and feed on algae and organic debris until they are ready to transform into adult. So some mosquitoes lay their eggs in water, and others in places where there will eventually be water. In central Australia, where rain is very infrequent, Aedes mosquitoes (carriers of yellow fever), lay their eggs in pools after a downpour. The pools soon evaporate and the eggs may stay dormant for years until it rains again. Then the mosquito life cycle starts anew as if no time had elapsed. The eggs of other species of mosquito may not need to wait so long, but they are certainly capable of surviving droughts and similar harsh conditions, such as Arctic winters. With all water frozen, an Arctic winter has the same effect as a drought. But the Arctic Culex mosquitoes (carriers of viral encephalitis) are some of the most successful breeders. After nine or ten m...

Eats 2,000 mosquitoes a day?
2007-08-07 14:30:00
America?s most sociable bird is getting ready to pack up and head south for the winter in the next couple of weeks. That would be the purple martin (Progne subis), whose usefulness was already recognized in Appalachia by the early Cherokees, who hung bottle gourds horizontally on long poles to attract them. Not only did the birds eat prodigious amounts of insects, but they also (and still do!) drove crows away from cornfields and vultures away from meat and hides hung out to dry. Purple martins are the largest member of the swallow family in North America and the only species of martins on the continent. Worldwide, there are more than 70 kinds of swallows and martins. Appalachia has six kinds: purple martin, and barn, cliff, tree, northern rough-wing, and bank swallows. One of the great myths, one of the things that makes the uninitiated want to attract martins to their land, is that each bird can eat 2,000 mosquitoes a day. Martins, like all swallows, are indeed aerial insectivor...
Help! Mosquitoes are taking over!
2007-07-26 16:56:00
We just had twenty cubic yards of bark dust and garden soil delivered the other day. Along with the bark dust came hundreds and hundreds of baby mosquitoes. OMG the horror... I already despise our existing mosquito population... but now hundreds upon hundreds of new residents????? I have at last 10-15 bits on me right now. My natural repellent is helpful, but was no match for THAT MANY at once. *sigh* They're so small that they can fit through our screens so I couldn't even cool off the house last night (we don't have A/C). I had to wake up at 5:30 this morning to cool it off while the little winged vampires were sleeping. I did some research last night on natural repellent/exterminator products and found a really interesting one. It's called Mosquito Barrier and it's made with some super-duper strong garlic juice that disolves their exoskeleton and kills the larvae. Anyone have any experience with this product??? I read their testimonials and none were from Washington state. S...
Bug Off: Protecting Your Garden from Mosquitoes
2007-07-24 05:01:00
For those of us who enjoy gardening, mosquitoes are a frequent pest. As they aim to feed on the nectar of flowers, gardens, to mosquitoes, are like all-you-can-eat buffets: we are open, come on in. This not only hurts your landscaping and ruins your garden, but it can also be detrimental to your health: mosquitoes are well known for spreading disease. You could ignore these facts, of course, and go on with your gardening and with your life in some kind of West Nile denial. But, when ignoring mosquitoes and the problems they cause proves futile, you may find yourself in need of a solution. Luckily, there are natural ways to get rid of your problem.Fill your Water with Fish and Frogs: Water, particularly stagnant water, is highly attractive to mosquitoes; it's where most mosquitoes lay their eggs. For this reason, having water in your backyard, such as a stream or a fountain, can leave you wasting away in mosquito-ville.Removing water from your backyard is one solution, but if you ca...

Lighter Footstep: Tell mosquitoes to buzz off - without pesticides
2007-05-16 19:26:00
Mosquito biting human, by Matti Parkkonen : (Wikimedia Commons)Editor's note: This week, Lighter Footstep editor Chris Baskind shares some ways to keep the mosquitoes at bay this summer. This post was originally published on May 10, 2007. With an unusually mild winter and record high spring temperatures across North America and Europe, 2007 is shaping up as a boom time for mosquitoes. Don't even bother with bug zappers and clouds of insecticides: not only are they ineffective, they do more damage than good. The neighborhood mosquito fogging carried out by some municipalities is a 24-hour solution at best, and large-scale spraying kills bees and other beneficial insects. Insecticides aren't good for animals or humans, either. Fortunately, a little planning can make your outdoor activities a lot more bearable during the summer months. Ready to swat your mosquito problem the healthy, natural way? Here are some pointers. Go on patrol Mosquitos don't range very far. That...
