Mother Nature can bite me
2009-01-17 21:31:00
We’re 2 weeks in to the new year and I gotta tell ya, this year sucks big time. So far I’m not feeling too good about what the other 50 weeks might bring. Is it because it’s an odd year? You know those odd numbers get me every time. First it’s been bitterly cold. And actually ...
Big Government: Now Better Than Mother Nature
2008-07-15 12:46:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Teddy Roosevelt impressed the nation with his focus on conservation and while he was president was responsible for pushing to conserve our nation’s wilderness in the form of sundry national parks, mostly in the western U.S. This was a worthy enterprise, few can deny. But what is the true purpose of these ...
Mother Nature Fires Back!
2008-05-23 18:52:00
Have you noticed a lot of changes in our environment today? Natural calamities are happening around the world, from typhoon, earthquake to tornado and a lot more. Seems like Mother Nature is angry to us, humans, who are not taking care of our environment well. And have you noticed that in our country, the weather is a big change. Usually, at this time of the year, we are all in the beach and have

Bring it On Mother Nature... Bring it On
2008-05-14 13:09:00
Monday I wasn't online much... almost not at all actually. After hemming and hawing about no money to go with the strong urge to get my garden 'in' I decided to take a deep breath and get the plastic out... yes, it went on credit card but I'm hoping on payday this Friday I can put an immediate payment to the balance. Off I went to the store and since Coffeehusbands day 'off' this week was
Mother Nature intruded on some Local's Mother's Day Plans
2008-05-13 18:14:00
This Mother's Day morning arrived with tornado warnings for the area that actually did happen that Sunday afternoon. A tornado touched down in areas of St. Simons and Brunswick and did significant property damage, but thankfully no serious injuries or deaths as a result. Again, the Golden Isles of GA seems to live a charmed existence! We only experienced power outages at my home and business, but some residents must be on the phone with their insurance company's adjuster this morning! My assistant said she was in nearby Camden County by a friend's pool without any evidence of bad weather or wind. Today is another beautiful Spring day--- lovely, clear skies and a delightful ocean breeze.
Mother Nature is not a feminist
2008-05-10 20:53:00
Why the cows, a/k/a the feminazi, a/k/a gender feminists are doomed.   Mother Nature is not a feminist.  The long explanation by John Derbyhire, National Review,: In biology, however, “fitness” is a term of art, a measure of how well an organism is adapted to its environment. Reproductive success is a pretty good measure of fitness, in this term-of-art sense. Thus if, as my reader seems to believe, dumb people have more kids than smart ones, then dumb people are fitter (in the biological sense) than smart people, by definition. They are better adapted to their environment. You might think that smart people are superior in some way to dumb people, but Ma Nature doesn’t agree with you. The only “superiority” She acknowledges is reproductive success. She also doesn’t insist that every species, in every environment, get smarter, faster, bigger, and stronger. If the demands of fitness decree that dumber, slower, smaller, and weaker bring reproducti...

My Humble Contribution To Mother Nature
2008-04-10 10:15:00
I planted this avocado plant almost a year ago perhaps. In fact there were three of them. This one is thenon-composted and about 6 inches tall. Today it has grown to 1 1/2 feet. And then there's these two others, but composted. They are of the same age but notice that these twoare about 6 inches taller than the non-composted.Today, we have a total of 4 fruit bearing trees in our backyard.1. Composted Avocados which are about 2 1/2 feet tall2. Non-composted avocado which is about 1 1/2 feet tall3. Papaya is about 3 feet tall4. Jackfruit is about, oh she(he)'s tall almost 15 feet. This was our first fruit bearing tree, which we planted shortly after we moved here more than 5 years ago.5. Then there's the atis which bore about 6 fruits but last year. But only 2 were good. The rest? The birds ate them. Ahh leave som...
Mother Nature must be confused...
2008-04-02 02:05:00
She certainly seems to be having a hard time figuring out that it is supposed to be SPRING!! This is what we woke up to on the last day of March here in Yankton...out like a lion, I guess. There was one good thing that came from it...I got a call from my boss at about 7:30 a.m. to let me know that they had decided to close the College for the day and that the public school was closed as well, so Kaitlin and I both got the day off. The administrators must be just as plain SICK of winter, too, because Yankton virtually NEVER calls off school. It was the first time this winter. Justin called from work once he heard it on the radio to make sure we knew and suggested that perhaps he and Kaitlin could make a snowman when he got home from work. So, for the rest of the day, I heard, "Mom, is Dad home yet?" about every five minutes! The snow was definitely 'sticky' enough for snowman making. It was a super wet, heavy snow. The problem was that there had been NO snow on the ground the day befo...
Will Weather Affect Ohio Democratic Primary Voting?
2008-03-04 19:35:00
Will Mother Nature cooperate for today’s hotly contested Democratic primary races in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont? Ohio is a “must-win” for both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but a wintry mixture of freezing rain, snow and sleet are expected across much of the state. Freezing rain has begun to fall in Cleveland (Cuyahoga County). Will inclement weather make it more likely that lower-income voters who rely on public transportation won’t be able to make it to voting booths? It’s believed that Clinton has a lead in Ohio but Cleveland, with a population (as of the 2000 Census) that’s 50.99 percent black, should deliver votes for Obama.

Spanish Moss
2008-02-15 16:45:00
Spanish Moss Spanish moss is an epiphyte (a plant that lives upon other plants; from Greek "epi"=upon "phyte"=plant), which absorbs nutrients (especially calcium) and water from the air and rainfall. Spanish moss is colloquially known as "air plant". It is not a biological parasite in the same sense as another epiphyte, mistletoe (it does not burrow into the tree and suck out nutrients)- however this is using a technical meaning of "parasite" of the biological community. By using a tree's structure it blocks out sunlight that would otherwise fall on the host tree's own leaves. The amount of sunlight it blocks is proportional to the amount it reduces tree growth depending on the tree type. On some trees only smaller or lower branches will die but the tree will grow at a slower rate. It can grow so thickly on tree limbs that it gives a somewhat "gothic" appearance to the landscape, and while it rarely kills the trees it lowers their growth rate by reducing the amount of light to a...

The Angel Oak
2008-02-11 16:03:00
The Angel Oak is thought to be one of the oldest living things east of the Mississippi River. Towering over 65 feet high, the Angel Oak has shaded John's Island, South Carolina, for over 1400 years, and would have sprouted 1000 years before Columbus' arrival in the New World. Recorded history traces the ownership of the live oak and surrounding land, back to the year 1717 when Abraham Waight received it as part of a small land grant. The tree stayed in the Waight family for four generations, and was part of a Marriage Settlement to Justus Angel and Martha Waight Tucker Angel. In modern times, the Angel Oak has become the focal point of a public park. Today the live oak has a diameter of spread reaching 160 feet, a circumference of nearly 25 feet, and covers 17,100 square feet of ground. www.historictrees.org Acorns from the Angel Oak have grown to produce authentic direct-offspring trees. Live oaks generally grow out and not up, but the Angel Oak has had plenty of time to do b...
An Open Letter to Mother Nature
2008-02-10 00:20:00
Generally I appreciate a woman with your spunk, but, Mother (if I can call you that), it’s time to give it up. From one woman who knows bitter, I’m not afraid to tell you, you’ve got a chip on your shoulder the size of the ice dams on my roof. Did somebody hurt you in a past season? Because I believe the gracious citizens of this fine state prefer you key a car or TP a house than continue with this icy behavior. You know what I’m saying? And it’s not just me that’s noticed. There are the overworked snowplow guys. The mail carriers. And that poor girl down the street that walks to school. And did you know—it’s nearly impossible to buy a snow shovel. This is Idaho. We’re out of snow shovels in Idaho! So on behalf of the entire state I’m leading your intervention. Winter must end. Enough with the subzero temperatures, and the school cancellations, and the one-two punch. It’s time another season got some press. And although I’m not the only one you’ve assaulted, I...

Mother Nature, Why Do You Torture Me So?
2008-01-24 07:22:00
It had to happen this way. I put up an "I-can-run-in-any-weather-cause--I'm-awesome" victory post. So what happens next? Snow. And more snow. And more snow in the middle of the night. I wake up and if I can even see 10 feet out in front of my house through blizzard conditions, it's only to see another 3 inches deposited to the 8 that were there the day before. It's everywhere: the recently shoveled driveway, the street, the sidewalk. GO AWAY ALREADY. For the past three mornings I have gotten up and crossed my fingers as I peak through our front room blinds, Only to curse the injustice of it all, "why, why, WHY!?" I need so little to go running! But I do need to not run in a blizzard (and not on snow, it gets pretty dangerous even with a thin layer of snow over really icy pavement). Really. If snowstorms could just happen in the afternoons, my route would most likely be cleared by the next morning. But that is not the case this week. So this morning, when I looked down at our driv...

My Aloe Vera Plant
2007-12-07 16:36:00
Aloe, also written Aloë, is a genus containing about four hundred species of flowering succulent plants. The genus is native to Africa and is common in South Africa's Cape Province and the mountains of tropical Africa, and neighbouring areas such as Madagascar, the Arabian peninsula and the islands off Africa. The APG II system (2003) placed the genus in the family Asphodelaceae. In the past it has also been assigned to families Aloaceae and Liliaceae. Members of the closely allied genera Gasteria, Haworthia and Kniphofia which have a similar mode of growth, are also popularly known as aloes. Note that the plant sometimes called "American aloe" (Agave americana), belongs to Agavaceae, a different family. Most Aloes have a rosette of large, thick, fleshy leaves. The leaves are often lance-shaped with a sharp apex and a spiny margin. Aloe flowers are tubular, frequently yellow, orange or red and are borne on densely clustered, simple or branched leafless stems. Many species of Aloe a...

Finding your way - tips from Mother Nature
2007-11-16 15:59:00
Nature's guides: Moss on trees, hemlock tips, many signs of nature, tradition says, will point your way. Well, Mother Nature will mislead you if you don't look out. Her compasses are not so simple to read. Moss does usually grow longest on the north side of trees, because the north side gets the least sun and stays damp the longest. But there are many locations where trees are shaded on the south and moss may grow on a different side or all around a tree.So it is with all of nature's signs. There are general rules about them, but local conditions may spoil the rules. This is not reason for mistrusting nature entirely. Keen eyes can add up all the signs and find the general direction. Here are the best signs. They are useful when it pours rain and the sun won't help.Three plants have leaves growing vertically from the stem. These point north and south:Rosin weed (silphium laciniatum)Prairie dock (silphium terebinthianaceum)Prickly lettuce (Lactuca scoriola)The last gro...

2007-10-25 18:20:00
Actress Halle Berry fears the Malibu, California wildfires will destroy her California home - but insists its fate rests with "mother nature".Almost one million people have so far been evacuated from the affected area since fires began on Sunday morning. And the pregnant star admits the flames have got her seriously worried for the safety of her loved ones.Speaking from London, where she's promoting her new film, ironically titled Things We Lost In The Fire, the Oscar winner tells WENN, "It's frightening. I live in Malibu so I'm worried about my neighbors, my friends, my family and my house (because) it's a very old property."It's scary, it's mother nature, she's angry."

Mosquito Control - Gotta love Mother Nature
2007-09-04 07:11:00
Thought I'd give everyone an interesting update... The mosquito craziness is gone! It was the weirdest thing ever, but also quite fascinating. Because of all the little babies flying everywhere, it attracted more dragonflies. We always get a lot of dragonflies, but suddenly there were tons. There were also a lot more of those hover-flies (the ones that look like bees). Both predators absolutely DEVOURED my out-of-hand mosquito population! So I actually have FEWER mosquitos now than I've had in previous years. WEIRD!:)

I miss my blog, baking and most of all staying in touch with fellow bloggers out there.Sophie is leaving Tuesday but I hope this won't be her only visit to the US. I will be back to posting and baking next week for sure!In the meantime, I am leaving you with a picture if the pecan tree I look at every morning while enjoying breakfast on the porch. The pecans are still green and I am counting the days until I can make pecan pie!!Allright, off to the beach now!

CaliforniaWaterscapes.com: Backyard Ponds - High Tech or Mother Nature?
2007-08-21 19:54:00
In the last article I talked about some of the reasons for the boom in ponds and water features as home improvements, and I promised to give some insights into the technology that has made backyard water features so much less expensive and much easier to look after than in years past. The revolution in pond systems started about a decade ago. This new approach has drastically lowered the maintenance needed for ponds, made them more affordable and owner-friendly while at the same time much more natural looking than any ponds before. To help you understand how these systems work and to help you choose what type of pond would be best for your backyard let's go over some of the basics about ponds and filtering systems. What's Being Filtered in a Pond?A filter is a device for straining substances in suspension from a liquid or gas by passing the liquid or gas slowly through cloth, paper, sand, ceramic tile, charcoal or other porous media. Media is a substance that carries, collects or hol...

So I finally got to go on real Mission yesterday, and let me tell you, it was a whole ?nother ballgame. Not that the other Missions I?ve been on so far weren?t important, but when the fate of the World is literally at stake, let?s just say your heart beats a little bit faster. In a good way. Mostly? The whole thing started when my Blinker went off just as I was picking up a large pie (half-plain, half mushroom) with Benjamin at Highland Pizza. Fortunately, I always bring my Toolkit with me wherever I go, so it was no problem deploying my Me-2 in the bathroom and sending it home with Benjamin to make sure the Drane clad was well fed for dinner. It was a little bit trickier to slip out of the pizza parlour without anyone wondering why the same kid who just walked out with a pizza and a little monster was walking out of the bathroom, but the best policy in those circumstances is to just hide in plain sight and act like you?re supposed to be there. It works when me and Crozier sne...
