Energized Disengagement ? The New Trend
2012-02-09 15:38:00 I?m going to tell you the one thing no incentive company will tell you. Don?t run that recognition and reward program to fix your employee engagement problems. Don?t do it. Don?t do it. Don?t do it. Run a Program Save The World Here?s the problem. Most of the time the people tasked with driving ...
Employee Radar ? Repost
2012-02-07 14:30:00 This was originally posted in September of 2007 but it seems to me to be as applicable today as it was 4 years ago. At that time this site didn’t have as many subscribers or followers so I’m reposting hoping to get some more conversation started around this idea. We don’t understand our employees as ...
Employee Motivation Is About People Connections. Who Knew?
2012-02-06 13:25:00 We can spend all day talking about the right award, the right system, the right communication package that will motivate employees at your company. But at the end of the day, if you want to motivate your people you need to get outside your company and outside your reward program. You need to get ...
Incentive & Reward Programs Need More UGC
2012-02-03 14:12:00 UGC? What is UGC? User. Generated. Content. Old School ? New School In the days of Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble incentive programs to drive more rock breaking at the quarry came with elaborate communication plans. Big budget program announcements (if you were doing a group travel program the budgets were almost obscene), monthly ...
Why Do We Love to Work at Companies Where We Don?t Have to Work?
2012-02-01 14:12:00 Employee engagement on the web and in business articles has almost reached parody status. I’m waiting for a Stephen Colbert character to emerge as the voice of engagement. (Folks planning next season’s shows – I get some of the credit if you do this!) Don’t get me wrong – I’m all for employee engagement. I ...

When ?Mobile? Recognition Makes Sense
2012-01-23 14:27:00 Last week I posted that ?mobilizing? employee reward and recognition programs was a red herring. My thought process was that recognizing employees isn?t a function of ?location? but a function of effort on the part of managers. Many in the incentive industry are launching ?mobile? apps for their incentive and reward platforms selling it from ...
Are Mobile Apps For Rewards and Recognition Red Herrings?
2012-01-18 13:34:00 Question for you all? Is having a mobile application for your rewards and recognition system important? Is it needed? Or is it simply a solution in search of a problem? Is it marketing bluster and me-too-ism? Is the development of apps and mobile tools to reward and recognize people really something the market needs and ...
I Like You ? Here?s Some Money
2012-01-16 14:50:00 Peer to Peer programs (P2P) are pretty much a standard offering in employee reward and recognition programs today. If you?re not looking at P2P as a feature in your program ? got back and start over. P2P is a common and well-liked option within a company?s recognition strategy. For those under a rock ? P2P ...

Goal Setting ? @EvaRykr Nails It!
2012-01-09 14:45:00 Writing a post about goal setting would probably have made more sense before 2012 kicked off. But then again, if I had read @EvaRykr?s post before 2012 I?d have better goals myself. But it?s not too late. You can still rewrite your goals using some of the great info from Eva?s post from January ...
Re-entry is Rough
2012-01-07 16:29:00 Roughly 3 weeks ago, I swung by the Colorado Potters Guild to pick up 25# of clay in anticipation of a clay reboot during my winter break between semesters. Alas…the clay is still sitting in the mudroom unopened, chastising me for being such a procrastinating wuss. The truth is, I feel rusty and a little ...

What Stops You From Succeeding? Maybe it?s History.
2012-01-03 15:48:00 A favorite story I use in a ton of presentations is the Roger Bannister story. It?s an oldie but a goodie. For those in Rio Linda, Roger Bannister was the first person to run a sub 4-minute mile. The mythology goes that at the time he beat the record the prevailing wisdom was that ...
Motivation and Recognition ?Lose Weight Trap?
2011-12-20 16:22:00 I think, in many companies motivation, recognition and engagement have fallen into the ?lose weight? trap. The lose weight trap is my new ground-breaking motivation theory (patent pending TM?d and all that.) The LWT (we need an acronym to be legit) is based on the idea that you can sell any solution to any problem ...

When Was The Last Time You Recognized the CEO?
2011-12-05 13:12:00 We continue to do what we?re rewarded and recognized for doing. That is a pretty standard motivation/incentive axiom. It?s true for dogs, monkeys and employees. (Don?t jump up and down ? I?m not drawing any connection between the three ? they were just the first three things that came to mind ? of course there ...
Solve Human Problems With Human Solutions
2011-11-29 15:09:00 The problem with most incentive and reward programs today is that they attempt to solve a human problem though enabling technology. That?s just wrong-headed. Engagement and motivation are human problems. No technology in the world will solve them. Only human intervention will. Applying computer technology is simply finding the right wrench to pound in the ...

A Little Motivation
2010-10-26 09:30:00 Anyone that has been married knows that there are always ups and downs. The ups are fabulous, but the downs can be heart-breaking and tiring. Here is a little story to help married couples, and those planning their wedding, to remember the important things in life: Heather and Mark celebrated their love by getting married. After the reception, Heather’s mother gave her a new bank savings book with a deposit of R1000. “Heather, take this savings book and keep it as a record of your marriage. When something happy and good happens in your new life, deposit some money. Write next to the amount what it was for. The more memorable the event, the more money you should deposit. I’ve made the first deposit for you today. Do the others with Mark. When you look back after years, you will know how much happiness you’ve shared.” Heather and Mark thought that it was a great idea and couldn’t wait to make the second deposit. After some time, they had the followi...

SEO & Keywords will Make You Money!
2009-07-17 17:22:00 Let's face it folks, there's no such thing as shortcuts to internet millions, but there are some very hardworking individuals out there sharing their knowledge and insight. One I've mentioned is Courtney Tuttle of The Keyword Academy. I recently joined just due to the fact that the Hubpages phenomenon has really taken off. Joining TKA allows you to view training videos done by Court and his associate mark, and also provides you with forums as well as some great webinars. They dedicated a webinar just to the building of hubpages and how to get it ranked. Another guy that I respect for his hardworking online money making efforts is Grizzly who also teaches How to Make Money Online. He hasn't shown himself via any recent posts, meaning he's extremely busy working away, which is what we all need to learn to do to make money in this game. But if you immerse yourself in his blog entries, you'll find a true "wealth of information". His posts may seem to go on and on, but that...
Positive Motivation Versus Negative Motivation
2009-07-13 14:00:00 What makes you move forward? Which are the most powerful stimulus for you? Are you doing stuff only to avoid potential dangers, or are you just curious? In today’s post I’ll talk about negative motivation versus positive motivation. You may ask now: motivation is just the power which moves you to do stuff, are there anything like “negative” or “positive” to it? Isn’t this something related to what you do, not to what motivates you? Well, in my opinion, your motivation is directly shaping you actions. If you’re positively motivated, your action will most likely have a positive outcome. If you’re negatively motivated, your action will have an undesirable outcome. Negative is rooted on fear, while positive is rooted in service. The Fear Root Fear means you’re acting on the pressure of losing something, This is what fear is: the menace of losing something: your current context, your money, your life. Fear was for a long time a fantastic survival mechanism, and for th...
A "Hobby" Pays Off!
2009-06-10 21:39:00 Here is an example of someone who started their own busineess:One woman knew that her ad-agency job wasn?t safe. Clients weren?t renewing their contracts, no new business was coming in, and her workload as a public-relations officer was light. Plus, she was low on the totem pole, since she?d only been there for a year. When the ax finally fell in mid-December, she regretted not starting her job search earlier. Days turned into weeks as she tried to get an interview. And then an unexpected opportunity fell into her lap. She got a bunch of inquiries about a sideline she dabbled in occasionally: photography. ?When I got laid off, I didn?t really expect to start my photography business full time,? says the 28-year-old who studied photography at a University in San Francisco. But when she got the inquiries, ?a light went off when this happened. This was it. This was what I?m going to do. Ever since then, I?ve been working nonstop.?|Her first step was to revamp a Web site she had set up,...

Little Motivation Games
2009-02-24 13:02:00 While getting out of debt I liked to play little motivation games. Well maybe not games in the classical sense, but I created habits that gave me a little boost when I made progress. Like updating my debt reduction spreadsheets or sidebar charts. Like being extra careful to spend wisely when a credit card is almost paid in full just so that I could say it was done. Or similarly to reach the next $1000 mark or 10% mark. Little things like that that made represented some kind of mental milestone for me.What do I do now that I'm all paid up on the cards? I have to admit that I started slipping a little this month. I made several impulse purchases "because my credit cards are paid off, I deserve it".Ok sure, a small spending spree is forgivable, but I don't want to lose my good habits. I decided to stick with the monthly challenge just changing the title to savings snowflake challenge. I still have a side bar for emergency funds. I still update my Networth IQ. But somehow t...

Cold morning, windy day
2009-01-15 23:22:00 This picture I took on my walk this morning. The temperature is -18 C (0 F) and, although it's hard to make out, the steam rising from the water was mesmerizing. The lake is Lake Ontario. Here's another picture I took from roughly the same location a few weeks ago during a wind storm. We seldom see whitecaps on this lake, so it's quite exciting to see waves. The storm had winds up to 129km (75mph), which is worthy of a Category One hurricane. The winds took out a 40' tree on our neighbouring property. Missed our house by 1 foot but killed the fence.

Anxiety Motivation and Planning
2008-10-22 18:34:00 A lot of people with anxiety have motivation problems. Anxiety is part of the human bodies Fight or Flight response. It might be useful to see the fight or flight response in terms of motivation. This very basic, fundamental part of us which is so active when we feel anxious makes us do one of two things: run away or stand and fight. It is quite common for people who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks to have problems with motivation. It is not in fact that they lack motivation it is that they are very highly motivated to stay away from things which might be dangerous and stressful. People with anxiety have great motivation and strength of mind, but it is sadly pointing in the wrong direction. So what can you do to overcome this and start to empower yourself and move forwards? They key lies in planning. It is not a good idea to choose where you want to be and go for it, you actually need to do much more planning. This is especially true when getting to where you want looks so d...
