Yamaha Motorcycle refurbishing
2008-06-23 23:14:00
I am thinking about fixing up the old Yamaha DT1 that has been sitting around a few years. It is a 2 stroke-cycle engine with an oil pump to mix oil with gasoline. A few years ago, other riders old me to unhook the pump, and mix the oil manually with the gas. Now I find the cable is broke, so I may
Pickup truck meets motorcycle
2008-06-18 12:34:00
Okay, what is it about pickup trucks and motorcycles? Easily, 9/10 times there is a problem while I am driving my motorcycle, it is because of some jerk in a pickup truck. What is it, some sort of Badass Identity Anxiety thing? Well, whatever the reason, my motorcycle got squished by a pickup truck yesterday. Luckily, I wasn't on it when it happened ... of course, if it had I wouldn't be sitting here typing this blog description, would I?

Yamaha set to release world's quickest motorcycle
2008-06-04 18:00:00
June 4, 2008 Yamaha will release what is expected to be the world's quickest accelerating production motorcycle at a press conference later today in Madrid. The production 2009 V-Max will come almost 25 years after the original and groundbreaking 1200cc monster custom was first seen, and is expected to be almost identical to the concept machine shown at the 2007 Paris and Tokyo Shows. With an 1800cc fuel injected motor, the new V-Max will produce 210 bhp and feature state-of-the-art everything. The launch is due in Madrid later today and Yamaha is using the internet for a simultaneous unveiling here. If you can’t wait until then, here’s our photo gallery from last year’s Paris and Tokyo Shows. Without doubt, the machine is a worthy successor to the 1984 V-Max, and the show model we saw in Paris and Tokyo were visually stunning evolutions of the original design, albeit updated – it’s hard to fully appreciate the presence of the metallic bea...
New World Record for Largest Single-Cylinder Motorcycle
2008-06-04 16:00:00
When we think of today's motorcycles, most people will automatically picture a V-Twin on a sunny afternoon. We sometimes forget about the hard hitting single cylinders. However, Franz Langer has come up with something that should bring the spotlight back to single cylinders for at least a while. Mr. Langer is a German Engineer who has always been most interested in the single-cylinder design, rather than the more common V-Twin. While he was working, he filled his garage with 600cc to 700cc motorcycles. After he retired, he began building his own outrageous rides.   The cream-of-the-crop came when he decided he wanted to build the worlds largest single-cylinder engine on a motorcycle. For a long time that benchmark was 1000cc. It then made a jump to 1500cc. To be able to top that, Franz began with an airplane engine, single-cylinder of course, that displaced 1440cc.   The next step was to enlarge the engine and use a larger yet lighter cylinder. The final resul...

Ducati's Middleweight 848 Is Like A Motorcycle Exercise Machine
2008-06-03 16:00:00
Ducati designs motorcycles with racing in mind, so power, light weight and agile handling tend to crowd out characteristics like comfort. As a result, some models have seemed more like torture racks, suited for only the most dedicated, physically fit and perhaps masochistic riders. But the new Ducati 848 is different. It has a milder demeanor than the company's larger, more powerful models and is meant to be easier to ride and more practical for street use. Given the 848's racy looks, thinly padded seat and still remarkable output of 134 horsepower (more than my car), I wondered how comfortable such a bike could be. In two weeks and a couple hundred miles of riding, the 848 was easier to ride – and ride well – than its larger sibling, the 1098, I rode a year ago. The 1098 was clearly designed for racetrack speeds and riding on the road rarely necessitated shifting above third gear. I found the 848's first gear still too tall for street r...
Robbie Knievel Makes Record Breaking Jump Motorcycle
2008-06-03 15:00:00
Robbie "Kaptain" Knievel, successfully cleared 24 delivery trucks for the feat at Kings Island amusement park, Ohio. Evel, who passed away at the age of 69 last year due to a lung disease, was a popular entertainer in the United States. His accomplishments include his jump of 115ft over 14 buses at the same site in 1975, in front of millions of US TV viewers. Robbie wore a white leather suit similar to his father's for his leap in front of a crowd of 40,000 on May 24 and dedicated his feat to Evel. "I'll be up there to see you soon, Dad, but hopefully not today." The sun quoted him, as saying, before he performed. Later he told spectators: "Hopefully I'll see you after the jump." The 46-year-old stunt star raced up a 73ft ski ramp at 90mph before launching into the air through shooting flames. The moment he landed, he gave a thumbs up and also did a wheelie after that. However, afterwards he revealed t...
The People's Motorcycle
2008-06-02 16:00:00
Following the financial escapades of Italian motorcycle manufacturers is almost as exciting as riding the bikes they build. The question of Ducati’s ownership has been in the news several times recently, as a growing line-up of suitors have been positioning themselves for control of the Bologna-based firm. It’s a case of everyone loves a winner. Buoyed by the success of its internationally acclaimed 1098 superbike, and the prestige of winning road racing’s most coveted championship, the 2007 MotoGP, Ducati has become an appetizing commodity for investors that are speculating on the firm’s potential. In February three of Ducati’s main shareholders, Italian private equity firms BS Investimenti and Investindustrial SpA and Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan presented a 390 million-euro ($619 million) takeover bid. The offer to buy the 70% of the firm they didn’t already own, was valued at 22 percent over the current asking price of Ducati...

Bob Dylan's Motorcycle Wreck on July 29, 1966
2008-05-30 16:00:00
On July 29, 1966, Bob Dylan was injured in a motorcycle accident outside of his home in Woodstock, NY, suffering injuries to his neck vertebrae and a concussion.   Details of the accident remain elusive — he was reportedly in critical condition for a week and had amnesia — and some biographers have questioned its severity, but the event was a pivotal turning point in his career. Since 1961, when he had arrived in New York, Dylan’s life had moved quickly. In 1965 and ’66 the pace only increased. As one observer put it, Dylan wasn’t merely burning his candle at both ends; he was using a blowtorch. His incredible productivity—perhaps his three best albums, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and the double album Blonde on Blonde, were recorded within a 14-month span—was very likely fueled by methamphetamine; bone-thin in ’66, Dylan had the giveaway look of a speed freak.   I was blinded by the sun for a se...

Hardly Angels - Female Motorcycle Drill Team - Heading to Japan
2008-05-26 15:00:00
A group of local female motorcycle riders -- a self-described "chorus line on wheels" -- is taking its act to Japan to perform during a rally at the base of Mount Fuji.   It will be the women's third appearance there. "We're treated like rock stars over there," group member Jody Bernard said after a recent dress rehearsal.   The women call themselves "The Hardly Angels" and have been performing together for 14 years. They left for Japan last week. Bernard said the women formed the group after getting interested in riding through their husbands, and they wanted to become more proficient with their bikes. What started with figure eights soon became more complex, and one rider, Lynell Corbett, who had a background in dance, pushed the women to organize an act, thus becoming the first all-woman motorcycle drill team. More than a decade later, the group continues to be the only such team, which is why they are...

West Australian company gives paraplegics the chance to ride a motorcycle a
2008-05-23 15:00:00
It’s a sad fact that if you ride motorcycles for any length of time, you’re more than likely to run into somebody who used to ride bikes but can’t any more due to catastrophic injury - often these are injuries sustained in bike crashes. I’ve known several ex-bikers who have sustained life-changing injuries through the sport, and a few common threads emerge: most have no regrets, most are getting on with life with strength and dignity, and most would desperately love to ride again one day. And not a trike, a proper, leaning-in-the-corners, motorcycle. Whether or not they should ride again is one question - a question upon which these folks’ families would probably have a fairly firm opinion - but thanks to West Australian company Dreamfit and its founder Darren Lomman, paraplegic riders can now have a motorcycle retrofitted to allow them to re-live the freedom of the open road on two wheels.   The dreamfit retrofit addresses several differe...

How To Monitor Your Chinese Factory, The China Price, And QC By Motorcycle.
2008-05-22 17:32:00
Interesting post by Nina Ying Sun on the PN [Plastics News] China blog on the inherent difficulties in monitoring your China factory. The post is entitled "Hands-on due diligence in China," and it starts out with the following quotes from an interview with Alexndra Haney, author of the book, The China Price: The True Cost of Chinese Competitive Advantage: "More than half of factories in southern China are falsifying payroll documents!" "Many even create Potemkin factories.... Around the corner is a 'shadow factory' that produces the same goods under much less wholesome conditions." "There is even a cottage industry of 'falsification engineers' in China--consultants who specialize in doctoring payroll records and coaching workers to create a fiction of compliance with a Western buyer's code of conduct." The post then cites some of Ms. Harney's suggestions for dealing with your China factory: 1. Acknowledge that understanding what's happening in the company's supply cha...
Motorcycle Simulator Under Development at Nottingham University
2008-05-22 17:00:00
The motorcycle allows riders to operate controls and lean on the motorcycle as they would in the real world, said Dr Alex Stedmon A motorcycle simulator that consists of a Triumph motorcycle mounted on a rig surrounded by huge projection screens is currently under construction at Nottingham University. Once complete, the system will allow engineers to study aspects of motorcycle design as well as rider behavior, competence and safety. 'The motorcycle allows riders to operate controls and lean on the motorcycle as they would in the real world,' said Dr Alex Stedmon, a lecturer in the School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering’s Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics and Rider Human Factors By putting the rider into tailor-made scenarios and measuring both their and the motorcycle’s performance, the simulator will produce valuable data, both for academics and the motorcycle industry - manufacturers and road safety organizations have al...
Motorcycle Crackdown on the Taliban
2008-05-22 16:00:00
The Honda 125cc motorcycle has become to the Taliban what the Humvee is to the American military: the ride of choice. The government of Afghanistan and its US-led allies have launched commando attacks, sent out spies and paid bribes as part of efforts to subdue a bloody Taliban insurgency. But yesterday one province tried a new tactic - banning unregistered motorcycles. Authorities in Ghazni said the Taliban had been using motorcycles to carry out bombings and shootings. The Honda 125cc motorcycle has become to the Taliban what the Humvee is to the American military: the ride of choice. Ali Ahmed, director of the province's criminal department, said the ban was issued after gunmen on motorcycles killed the former governor, Taj Mohammed Qari Baba, on March 18. Mr Ahmed, whose police force has the task of approaching suspected Taliban militants and demanding motorcycle registration papers, said: "Today we stopped any motorcyclists traveling in or entering ...
Motorcycle Gangs Ride Roughshod in Japan
2008-05-22 15:00:00
JAPANESE police plan to deploy mechanized motorcycle traps to snare teenage bikers who are terrorizing the country's other road users. The sight of bosozoku gangs (literally "violent running tribes") meandering slowly across the road, aggressively revving their engines as they block any traffic that wants to pass, is now commonplace in Japan. The police detained more than 96,000 bosozoku last year for traffic violations, a 17 per cent increase from 1998. Most gang members are high-school dropouts and delinquents who drift into the gangs in which they become recruitment targets for Japan's yakuza mafia. A few years ago the bosozoku were little more than a noisy nuisance, but recently they have been hitting the headlines for more serious crimes, from assaults to robbery and extortion. The police have had an inglorious history of combating the gangs, who can easily outrun patrol cars if it comes to a high-speed chase. Now the police force in the southe...

Ride Your Motorcycle into the History Books June 13th
2008-05-19 15:00:00
Friday, June 13th, 2008 is the day that PD13 in Port Dover will be making Guinness World Record(TM) history. PD13 (Friday the 13th) in Port Dover has grown to be Canada's largest motorcycle event, with an estimated 150,000 attending last July in this fishing port on Lake Erie (pop. 6,000). This year, Friday the 13th falls only once - in June. "With attendance expected to soar, we see this as an opportunity to set a world record in the category of Largest Parade of Motorcycles," says Norfolk County's Promotions Coordinator, Cindy Vanderstar. This will be the first record attempt, according to Guinness World Records. Places such as Daytona Beach, Sturgis and Harley Davidson's Head Office in Milwaukee have never made the attempt. PD13 began in 1981 when Chris Simon and 25 of his biker friends, through word-of-mouth, met in a bar now known as Angelo's. It was a Friday, November 13th. Every Friday the 13th thereafter, no matter what time of year, they met again...

Tar Snakes and Far Horizons
