Mountain Goats - Prophetic, Poetic, and Profound Indie
2008-09-05 17:28:00 For an expanding horde of cassette-cuddling sub-undergrounders, home taping isn’t killing music, it’s about the only thing keeping it alive. Those folks have long held this shadowy Claremont, California, “group” (essentially singer/guitarist John Darnielle, plus whichever of his pals happens to have some free time and a spare Maxell) in high esteem. That’s due not ...
The Mountain Goats: Heretic Pride
2008-02-19 01:47:00 The Mountain Goats: Heretic PrideHeretic Pride is the 16th full length album for John Darnielle and company.John Darnielle had began writing autobiographical songs on his past three albums: We Shall All Be Healed, The Sunset Tree, and Get Lonely. Heretic Pride sees the return of Darnielle writing songs about others. For those who felt Darnielle was getting too mushy will be relieved to hear the albums contents. The album starts off with "Sax Rohmer #1" assumably about the prolific English author. The song is a nice upbeat folk-rock number with a full band arrangement with none too serious content.Besides prolific English authors, other characters making appearances are a boy in a Marcus Allen Jersey, a Murduk t-shirt, and Michael Myers. Yes, Darnielle is up to his old tricks again.Besides the full band arrangements and lack of cassette tape lo-fi quality, this is a classic Mountain Goats album. Everything the past three albums weren't, this album is.Rating: 8.8/10MP3: The Mount...

The Mountain Goats: Raw, Honest and Authentic Music Still Exists
2007-04-23 07:07:00 In a world where music has often become just another processed marketing technique used by the big businesses to market towards a specific demographic, it is nice to find artists that still sound not only spontaneous and powerful, but also like actual people. I’ve never been a big fan of terms like ?indie rock? or ...
Mountain Goats - Get Lonely
2006-09-24 20:36:02 John Darnielle’s stark, emotive singing and songwriting evolves with every Mountain Goats release. Where early Mountain Goats albums boasted obscure, no-fi recordings, Darnielle had honed his songs and performances to an amazingly effective, razor-sharp edge by 2006’s ‘Get Lonely’. 2005’s ‘The Sunset Tree’ proved Darnielle a confessional songwriter par excellence, and the bitterness and raw [...] |
