As the popularity of blogs continues to rise, blogging software platforms continue to evolve. With the recent release of version 4.1, the popular Movable Type application offers improvements that allow bloggers to expand their control over the publishing process. Movable Type is professional open source blogging software developed by Six Apart, written in Perl, and released under the GNU GPL. It requires a Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl (LAMP) server or an equivalent to run, and a mail server such as Sendmail or another SMTP-capable engine. The Apache server must be configured to execute CGI scripts. To start, you can try a functional online demo.

WordPress may be winning the war, but Movable Type is getting back into the

I've blogged a bit recently on how hard it is to install Movable Type and have it actually work on your own server. After getting and configuring Apache and MySQL (or PostgreSQL or SQlite), making sure you get the static files in the right place and the CGI/Perl files in the other right place, then making sure everything has the proper permissions ... I found it to be way beyond my capabilities. To be fair, I haven't yet tried to install WordPress, but I recently found out something very interesting: There are WordPress packages available in many of the major Linux and BSD distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu and even OpenBSD. Luckily, the same thing is now happening for Movable Type. So if you're using the Debian GNU/Linux distribution -- and I strongly suggest you do -- you can now install Movable Type as a Debian package.

I made some changes to my blog. • I almost completely revamped the pagination system. Previously, date-based archives were unable to load in chronological order. I manually created 3 smarty scripts to paginate archives 3 ways: Index front page, date-based archives, and category archive. It's now working pretty well regardless how one decides to view these archives. + Migration to MT4.1 created some unrecognized bug for old entries, which have been fixed + I updated some old entries in 2002, adding tags and categories. I stil have about 1100 more entries to update. Some extraneous codings within those enries were removed also. + My Maxthon2 browser has been very slow compared to Firefox, so instead of simply updating to the latest version. I installed it from scratch, made some changes to the interface, and now it loads much faster on my comp. All the fonts are now smaller, which is easier on my eyes. Six Apart just launched Movable Type v4.0 Release Candidate 1 Over the last 2 months the product has passed a long period of daily ongoing work on hundreds of fixes and new features through the beta 1 to beta 7 and this rc 1 releases. While there is still a good number of known issues, I must say that the Six Apart crew did what was humanly possible to build up a strong product which to also contain suggestion from the community that came along the way (i.e. podcasting support). This morning Iâ€™ve been trying to upgrade from beta 7 to rc 1, but for some reason Iâ€™ve encountered an error. Iâ€™ve been waiting for some support from Six Apart, but since there is quite a few hours difference between our time zones, Iâ€™ve decided to rather install Movable Type on a new database.

Movable Type 4.0 Extended Entry Editing Feedback - Learn from Windows Live

Among the people testing the Movable Type v4.0 beta installation I've made available, yesterday somebody placed an interesting note on the Extended Entry field positioning in MT v4.0 vs. the Windows Live Writer model Here it is: While I love MT's new rich text editor, hiding the "extended" part of the post in a second tab makes it harder to drag and drop content. I like Windows Live Writer 2.0's mechanism of inserting a visual marker that divides a post so you can see the whole entry including the dividing line. The dividing line becomes the thing you manipulate, moving it around and placing it where it should go in the text. This is a better conceptualization than a separate data field. It's more writerly, less geeky, and poses less risk; I hate moving text around, feel much safer moving the divider.

The wonderful team behind Six Apart, Ltd. announced today June the 4th, 2007 that Movable Type v4.0 beta 1 is ready for public review. While I'm personally a Movable Type Consultant, great fan of the Movable Type Publishing Platform and good friend of one of the engineers working on developing this platform, I couldn't resist the temptation of giving a try to this long awaited "Athena project". I must confess that I am delighted to see a redesigned platform containing lots of new features that we, the movable type community, have requested over time.
