Cameron Diaz- Influenza worries include MRSA, bird flu
2009-02-07 13:52:00
As a story in today's Times reports, the nation's top health officials are concerned that the dominant strain of influenza circulating in much of the country is resistant to Tamiflu, the most commonly used influenza antiviral. But that wasn't the only worry expressed during a recent update on all things influenza. High on the list was the threat of a deadly pneumonia that can develop when someone is infected with both the flu virus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.It was that combination that killed the father of actress Cameron Diaz last April, said Dr. Andrew Pavia during a teleconference sponsored by the Infectious Diseases Society of America earlier this week.Emilio Diaz died unexpectedly at age 58 after developing flu that turned into pneumonia. He lived in Seal Beach.

Controlling MRSA in Nursing and Residential Homes
2008-02-09 07:02:00
There is a great deal of concern in nursing and residential homes about the spread and significance of MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) Increased use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of MRSA and other resistant strains of bacteria. The lines between hospitals and care homes and the spread of MRSA are getting ...

Factor key to severity of community-associated methicillin-resistant staph
2007-11-12 00:59:00
Newly described proteins in drug-resistant strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium attract and then destroy protective human white blood cells?a key process ensuring that S. aureus survives and causes severe disease, according to scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.S. aureus disease is a global public health concern because some strains, including community-associated methicillin resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA), have developed resistance to existing antibiotics. The NIAID scientists hope to use this finding to advance development of new therapeutic treatments. In a study published online in Nature Medicine, Michael Otto, Ph.D., and his colleagues at NIAID?s Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) describe how novel members of the phenol-soluble modulin (PSM) protein family help determine disease severity and eliminate immune defense mechanisms against CA-MRSA.?This elegant work helps reveal the comp...

MRSA overkill?
2007-10-30 17:39:00
It was only a matter of time until hospitals succumbed to the pubic outcry of what the press is now calling "The MRSA Epidemic." Now, don't get me wrong, MRSA is a serious infection and we should not ignore it. Following up this story, communities are well aware that this infection is out there. Here is another local story. All that being said, I believe that some hospitals are starting to be too aggressive in looking for MRSA. Yesterday, Loyola University Medical Center announced that it will test every patient for MRSA. (Chicago Sun-Times) Now, this is nothing new. Other hospitals in that area have been doing this for years. And, according to the stats in the article, it has made somewhat of a difference. But, is screening EVERY patient the best way to look for MRSA?But some experts believe universal screening may be overkill. Dozens of studies have found that screening only high-risk patients, combined with other proven infection-control measures, are sufficient to control MRSA, ...

MRSA panic
2007-10-24 16:01:00
There is so much apathy in the country these days about a number of issues. Unfortunately, the only way most people learn about pertinent issues is during a crisis situation (image credit), or during a tragedy. This is evident now through the California wildfire situation. I admit that I really did know much about the specifics of how wildfires happen until recently reading about them. The same can be said of MRSA. I think it's reasonable to say that most of the public didn't know what MRSA was until recently, especially before the tragic death of that Virginia teen. Now, it seems to be everywhere in the media. And, our office is getting calls about this every day. In today's Newsday, an associate professor at NYU School of Medicine outlines what's probably been happening in doctor's offices across the country. But thanks to widespread media coverage of the CDC report, people are worried. Last week many of my patients called me with fresh concerns over their usual pimples and boil...
Mosquitoes, bug bites and MRSA in Jamaica
2007-10-22 20:19:00
Original content from Jamaicamax.com I had people ask me about my bug bites in Jamaica and what they could do to prevent the nasty infections I got. I’ll say that this summer was the worse I have ever seen bugs and mosquitoes in Negril and they really did eat us up horribly. My youngest son Robby has some scarring on his legs much like some of the older street hustlers around here and its sad really. I’m hoping he’s young enough he grows out of them but i fear he’ll have some long term marking. We all got bitten by mosquitoes but he got it the worse I think. I’m beginning to believe I had a MRSA infection that made my bug bites worse because I began to notice that they took weeks to heal when it should have been much less. Kinda scary I may have had a deadly infection and thought it was fricking bug bites but the article below just about seals it for me. I treated my own wounds by lancing and draining, I thought they were spider bites but found no spi...
New viruses to treat MRSA Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
2007-10-22 03:35:00
New viruses to treat bacterial diseases -- 'My enemies' enemy is my friend'Viruses found in the River Cam in Cambridge, famous as a haunt of students in their punts on long, lazy summer days, could become the next generation of antibiotics, according to scientists speaking at the Society for General Microbiology?s 161st Meeting at the University of Edinburgh, UK.With antibiotics now over-prescribed for treatments of bacterial infections, and patients failing to complete their courses of treatment properly, many bacteria are able to pick up an entire array of antibiotic resistance genes easily by swapping genetic material with each other.MRSA ? the multiple drug resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus - and newly emerging strains of the superbug Clostridium difficile have forced medical researchers to realise that an entirely different approach is required to combat these bacteria.?By using a virus that only attacks bacteria, called a phage ? and some phages only attack specific...
MRSA: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
2007-10-19 03:25:00
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. A new report highlights that most MRSA infections are associated with healthcare setttings.MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, caused more than 94,000 life-threatening infections and nearly 19,000 deaths in the United States in 2005, most of them connected with healthcare settings. These numbers appear in the October 17, 2007, edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)1, as part of the most thorough study to date of trends in invasive MRSA infections.MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This type of bacteria causes "staph" infections that are resistant to treatment with usual antibiotics.MRSA occurs most frequently among patients who undergo invasive medical procedures or who have weakened immune systems and are being treated in hospitals and healthcare facilities such as nursing homes and dialysis centers...
MRSA kills Virginia teen
2007-10-16 20:52:00
It used to be that MRSA, or methicillin resistant staph aureus, a bacteria, was the rarely even seen. It was talked about as a hospital acquired illness and patients were usually elderly with many complicating medical problems. Unfortunately, now, it's being seen more and more commonly. (image credit)The Associated Press is reporting that Ashton Bonds, a 17 year old Virginia high school student, died yesterday after being diagnosed with MRSA last week. Officials closed down 21 schools for cleaning to prevent spread of the bacteria. Many of the infections are being spread in gyms and locker rooms, where athletes ? perhaps suffering from cuts or abrasions ? share sports equipment. Ashton Bonds played football last year but was not playing this season.Ashton went to Bedford Memorial Hospital on Oct. 4 after complaining of pain in his side, his mother said. He was sent home after doctors ruled out appendicitis, but was readmitted three days later and transported to Carilion Roanoke Memo...
