MSNBC Had Best Coverage of the Primary Campaigns
2008-06-06 00:08:00 This is not a statistical analysis, but the impressions of one viewer - me - who happens to be a Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University in New York City, and author of a whole bunch of books about the media.I'm thinking MSNBC had far and away the best coverage of the primary campaigns - far better than its CNN and Fox competition. Here's why:1. Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, and Tim Russert commenting on the nights when the votes are counted: No other cable station or network has that kind of fire power - the current network news anchor (Williams), the previous network news anchor (Brokaw), and, just for good measure the host of Meet the Press (Russert). CNN and Fox have no parent network such as NBC to draw upon.2. The coverage of MSNBC during the day is top-notch, even extraordinary. Andrea Mitchell interviews movers and shakers whenever she is on, which is often. (Her interview with Manhattan Congressman Charlie Rangel yesterday broke new ground in ...

MSNBC Sends In The Clown
2008-05-29 18:46:00 To commit Serious Journalism, pissing off NBC WH correspondent David Gregory fingered for leaking an anti-Olbermann jab appearing in the Wash Post yesterday. Jossip has the back story. Here's what set off Olbermann: "Some top NBC journalists say privately they are troubled by the overlapping identities." [Now that NBC has physically swallowed MSNBC at 30 Rock.] Thin-skinned Olbermann went bat shit when he saw this: "Olbermann is edging ever-closer to self-parody, or, worse, predictability... every time he turns up the volume to 11 like this lately, he sounds like just another of the cable gasbags he used to be a corrective to." TIME James PoniewozikWhen I wrote about both jabs yesterday I observed that Olbermann's skin was so thin he could be flayed with a butter knife. MSNBC, Leaning Left And Getting Flak From Both Sides
2008-05-29 16:29:00 The political coverage of MSNBC anchors Chris Matthews, left, and Keith Olbermann has been criticized for being blatantly left-leaning and pro-Barack Obama. MSNBC, which bills itself as “the place for politics,” is being pummeled by political practitioners.

MSNBC Launches Veepstakes Bracket Challenge
2008-05-28 06:25:00 SANFORD GETS BASELESS NO. 1 SEED, GRAHAM MAKES FIELD I think this is possibly the most amazing thing I have seen from a mainstream media network in a long time. In a stroke of genius, MSNBC has created a “Veepstakes” Bracket Challenge where users can pick a winner from a field of 32 potential running mates for Republican presidential nominee John McCain, seeded and placed against one another in head-to-head match ups, similar to the NCAA’s “March Madness.” Users are given the ability to make their selections in the first round (complete with analysis from David Gregory and Chuck Todd above) and, after the results are tabulated, the second round field will be set for next week. But while the concept is brilliant, the seedings are an absolute joke. Here’s the breakdown: (1) MARK SANFORD v. (8) JOHN DANFORTH The channel of Keith Olbermann and Joe Scarborough continues their unfounded love affair with our own inept Gov. Mark Sanford by giving him on...

2008-05-27 20:25:00 It is clear the Obama people are reveling in the out and out cheer leading they are getting from the inmates at P-MSNBC. MSNBC: ?This was not a good debate for Obama, period.?
2008-04-17 09:07:00 I didn’t watch, so I will have to rely on those who did. Chuck Todd did, and said Obama had a very bad night: In the first 40 minutes of the debate, most of the questioning was on Obama’s negatives (except for a lone Bosnia-sniper question to Clinton) and that’s what helped create what was a near disastrous performance by Obama in those first 40 minutes. He was weak in a lot of his answers on his personal negatives. (Did he really compare Tom Coburn to a one-time ’60s radical/terrorist?) Clinton, meanwhile, piled on, particularly (and surprisingly, actually) on Ayers. While I’m not sure if Clinton’s piling on ever is good for her in the long run — see her current poll standing — it created some post-debate issues for Obama. Many news organizations will feel compelled to do Ayers stories in the next few days. While some may question the fairness and relevancy of the Ayers issue, it’s not going to be good for Obama. So Sean Hanni...

Immediately reassign him to red carpet Siberia where he'll do no harm other than boring boring celebrities. Maybe not so coincidentally, the current senator, Republican Arlen Specter, announced today his cancer has come back. Perhaps Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell will appoint Matthews to serve the rest of Specter's term if he meets his Maker while still in office.

MSNBC: The Place For Polemics
2008-04-01 16:04:00 NBC ran a special one hour Countdown with Keith Olbermann and it pulled Quarterlife style numbers (3.37 million) and did even worse in the demo with a 0.5/2. I?d blame that on the basketball overrun except that a rerun of King of the Hill on Fox did about three times as well as KO in the demo. Even a rerun of America?s Next Top Model on the CW had a better 18-49 result than Olbermann. We know from our regular coverage that almost all of Olbermann?s (and O?Reilly?s too) viewers are over the age of 55 on cable, and it would seem NBC was doing their own little Katie Couric experiment to see if it could capture the youth using Keith Olbermann. The verdict is in: nope. Dateline at 8pm pretty much doubled Countdown in viewers and tripled it in the demo. It will be interesting to see if they try this experiment again, or whether it?s ?You: Stay on MSNBC, thanks!? Taylor Marsh is so upset that Hillary Clinton will lose to Barack Obama that she stoops to misquoting Senator Obama. Barack appeared on a popular radio show called "Angelo Cataldi" If you see the show's website , it glowingly praises Senator Obama, writing:Philadelphia's Angelo Cataldi interviewed Barack Obama this morning on Philadelphia's Sports Radio, WIP-AM 610. Cataldi, a wildly popular sports personality in Philadelphia, did a great interview, which you can listen to here. According to local listener Eric Schmeltzer:Cataldi and his crew were raving about Obama for two hours after his interview was done. Guys were calling in saying they didn't know who they were going to vote for, until Obama called in, and that cinched it for them. Cataldi was saying he's going to do everything to elect him, and was getting his tux ready for the inaugural ball.A... |
