Multiple Sclerosis - What are the Effects?
2008-02-29 01:05:00 Multiple Sclerosis - What are the Effects? What is multiple sclerosis?Multiple sclerosis is a central nervous system disorder characterized by damage to the messages transmitted to and from the brain. These messages generally control the way the body works. Thus, any damage can cause problems with vision, memory, balance and movement. It may also affect the ability to feel sensation, pain and vibration. The human body is serviced by an extensive system of nerves that control the way the body functions. These nerves are protected by a fatty substance called myelin which insulates them from damage. If a person suffers from multiple sclerosis, the myelin is damaged thus blocking the impulses from the brain.Symptoms of multiple sclerosisThe early symptoms include loss of vision, loss of balance, weakness, and numbness. These symptoms are not universal to all sufferers. In fact, some people suffer little more than intense fatigue while others may be so affected they may become paralyzed.Th...
Yoga Study for Multiple Sclerosis
2008-02-01 05:10:00 By Koral Ilgun Ananda’s Expanding Light Yoga and Meditation Retreat recently hosted a group of people with early stages of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to conduct a Yoga Therapy Workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to investigate yoga’s effect on the functional abilities of an MS patient to maintain an active and fulfilling life. I have had a chance to interview Maitri Jones, a registered nurse and a staff member at the Expanding Light, who designed and conducted the study with help from many other members of Ananda around the country. Below are some excerpts from this interview: Koral: How did the idea of this workshop come up? Maitri: A lot of research is being done about yoga practices and meditation, using MRIs showing how these ancient teachings result in beneficial changes for the brain. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the brain and nervous system. The idea for this MS research was first started in Rome, Italy with our Ananda Yoga teachers from Ass...
What Do You Need To Know About Multiple Sclerosis
2008-01-24 00:15:00 What Do You Need To Know About Multiple Sclerosis1. Multiple Sclerosis: Multiple Sclerosis is one amongst the widely afflicting diseases today. It can be interpreted to be a disease of nervous system where it worsens over a period of time with loss of feeling and loss of control of movement and speech. So, MS attacks the individual’s central nervous system that is constituted of different nerves and nerve fibers. It involves a threat to his brain, spinal cord and eye or optical nerves. Basically MS hampers or destructs the protein that safeguards the nerve fibers. This protective protein is known as myelin and it aids in the communication between nerve cells. Once myelin gets burnt up, a breakdown occurs in the nerve cells’ co-ordination. Its effect is visible in the behavior (that drifts from normal to abnormal) of the individual. Along with this there appear lesions and plaques occur on that part of the body where demyelination takes place. But this is not all. Most often the...
Multiple Sclerosis - What Is It?
2008-01-24 00:12:00 Multiple Sclerosis - What Is It?Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) where the body's own immune cells attack the nervous system. In Multiple Sclerosis, inflammation of nervous tissue causes the loss of myelin, a fatty material that acts as a sort of protective insulation for the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This demyelination leaves multiple areas of scar tissue (sclerosis) along the covering of the nerve cells, which disrupts the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain, producing the various symptoms of multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis-Causes, symptoms, and risk factors. The cause of multiple Sclerosis is unknown. Geographic studies indicate there may be an environmental factor involved. Multiple Sclerosis is more likely to occur in northern Europe, the northern United States, southern Australia, and New Zealand than in other areas. Symptoms of multiple Sclerosis vary because...

New therapeutic target for multiple sclerosis identified
2008-01-23 11:16:00 Researchers at University of Montreal have discovered a new therapeutic target for alleviating multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease of the nervous system. The study conducted by Dr. Alexandre Prat, a CHUM neurologist and researcher and a professor at the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Medicine have found that an adhesion molecule known as ALCAM (Activated Leukocyte Cell Adhesion Molecule), or CD166, plays a key role in the movement of certain types of white blood cells to the brain. According to the research team, the molecule expressed by the endothelial cells of the brain, represents the new target to restrict the exodus of immune cells to the brain, thus reducing neuroinflammation and lesions characteristic of the disease. The study was conducted using an in vitro human blood-brain barrier (BBB) model and an in vivo experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis mouse model. The researchers found that increased transmigration of the ...

The intern, Courtney Scott, asked Williams, “Do you think pharmaceutical companies would be discouraged from research and development if their profits were restricted?” Williams abruptly canceled the interview but later ran into Scott and two other reporters at the Westin Savannah Harbor where they were doing a feature on gingerbread houses. Thinking that Scott had followed him, AP/MSNBC reported the following: Williams walked up to Scott and told her that “I can look you up, find w...

Supplement Inhibits Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes
2007-09-06 13:10:00 A glucosamine-like dietary supplement has been found to suppress the damaging autoimmune response seen in multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes mellitus, as per University of California, Irvine health sciences researchers. In studies on mice, Dr. Michael Demetriou and his colleagues with the UC Irvine Center for Immunology observed that N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), which is similar but more effective than the widely available glucosamine, inhibited the growth and function of abnormal T-cells that incorrectly direct the immune system to attack specific tissues in the body, such as brain myelin in MS and insulin-producing cells of the pancreas in diabetes. Findings from the study are published on the online version of the Journal of Biological Chemistry........

2007-08-30 11:11:00 Using magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain, researchers have identified a new abnormality related to disease progression and disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a study published in the September issue of Radiology, published by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)."Based on these findings, physicians may be able to diagnose multiple sclerosis more accurately and identify patients at risk for developing progressive disease," said the study's lead author, Rohit Bakshi, M.D., associate professor of neurology and radiology at Harvard Medical School and director of clinical MS-MRI at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Partners MS Center in Boston.MS is a chronic, autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of myelin, the protective layers that surround nerve cells. Multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri: Is it safe for Crohn's patients?
2007-08-08 21:32:00 I'm always perplexed (albeit skeptical) when I read about the latest drug developments. So you can imagine the questions swirling in my mind when I read that a Food and Drug Administration panel -has asked that the FDA approve controversial multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri (natalizumab) for use by patients with Crohn's disease. What's the big deal you ask?Well for starters, the drug was pulled from the market by the drugmaker in February 2005 (just three months after it was approved to treat relapsing multiple sclerosis) after three patients in clinical trials developed a rare viral infection of the brain (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML). Two of the cases were fatal. That's when the FDA stopped clinical trials of the drug. But Tysabri (natalizumab) came back to the market in June 2006 under a strict risk management program.A similar situation surrounds the IBS drug Zelnorm, which was pulled from the market in May and just recently ...
