If not, is there any way I can make

Multitasking Virus In Our Classrooms
2008-05-21 00:00:00 By Josh Waitzkin A few weeks ago, I returned to the classroom of Dennis Dalton, the most important college professor of my life. From the back of an amphitheater seating several hundred students, I realized how much things had evolved at Columbia and Barnard. The lecture hall was now equipped with a wireless sound system, webcams, ...

Apple to iPhone Users: No Multitasking Applications for You
2008-03-13 09:13:00 Apple is taking a play out of the Palm OS playbook for the iPhone. Unfortunately, it isn’t one that’ll benefit developers or end users. Like with the Palm OS, Apple isn’t going to allow developers to create applications that can multitask or run in the background when not directly being used. This means only when a program is on the screen will it be allowed to access the iPhone’s memory and processing resources. read it here smartphonetoday.com

Apple iPhone Multi-touch but not Multitasking
2008-03-10 13:39:00 Yeah that?s right, according to the official Iphone Human Interface Guidelines that was published by Apple recently; only one application can be run on the iPhone at any given time. No applications running in the background, which means your iPhone is multi-touch, but not multitasking. This should give the developers something to think about, a bit ...

Two Popular Multitasking
2008-03-06 17:38:00 There are two popular multi tasking schemes that are followed:1. Pre-emptive multitasking – which means that the operating system is in complete control at all times. Every task is allocated a specific time slice of the processor time and paused after the time slice is over. This scheme prevents a process from monopolizing the processor time and ised by Windows 95 and Windows NT.2. Cooperative multitasking – which means that the executing process is in complete control of the processor, therefore, the probability of an application monopolizing the system resources is high. This scheme is used by Windows 3.x.

Multitasking a boon for work/family life balance
2008-02-17 10:22:00 Mainstream media almost uniformly blasts on the stress of daily life facilitated by "Crackberries", wifi, laptops and multitasking in general. However, for working parents balancing work and family life, the "always on" life makes complete sense for certain character types who are comfortable with peripatetic multitasking. At the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, at chess tournaments and other indoor competitions, parents wait for their children to finish practice or matches in wifi-enabled lounges working on their laptops. The new Conservatory opened last September, and the architects made the common mistake of wiring for too few outlets so there's always a rush for plug position on Saturday mornings. To me, work efficiency makes life less stressful... I would rather spend that hour or two waiting for my children to finish practice on the laptop than wasting time driving back and forth. Moreover, the kids are used to it, they know that when they are finished, they get my full...
Humans Have No Problem with Multitasking, but Are Overwhelmed by Double Tal
2008-02-17 00:13:00 It is not very hard for a normal human being to perform separate complex tasks, but it is extremely difficult to perform the same tasks when two other individuals are talking at the same time to us. Multitasking More Efficiently
2008-02-04 20:13:00 On Friday I talked about how multitasking can be a curse. Killing 2 or more options with one stone has become the standard. I try to distinguish between juggling many tasks that are ongoing and multitasking. To me, the latter is trying to juggle more than one thing at a time, like doing your day job while texting, checking email, and doing other things simultaneously. Juggling ongoing tasks giving each your full attention can be better. For example, before I had my first book published, I had many ideas for topics to write about and began to develop a bunch of books. I jumped from one to another, never making any serious headway for any of them. For years I worked on many books. An idea for one book led to an idea for another and another. All in one day! I?d have the files for several titles opened at once as I worked on them all. My brain raced and raced, but I finally realized it wasn?t in a good way. I couldn?t focus well on any one of them, in addition to doing the work that earn...
Multitasking Can Bite You
2008-02-01 17:27:00 Multitasking has become a way of life for many of us. Women work, care for kids, do household chores, AND, try to keep up with all the communication going on with email, cell calls, etc. Men, who are known for not being as communicative as women, are changing that with electronic devises that keep businesses functioning and people connected these days. Multitasking allows us to do a lot more. But is this a good thing?I remember when I did one thing at a time. There were no cell phones, emails, Internet distractions, text messenging, and we just ate blackberries. People talked to each other. I went to work, maybe called a friend or two when I could. Returning home meant preparing dinner, a little chatting or TV. For those of you in the Gen Y generation who don?t know what I?m talking about, those were days of less stress and often getting more things done well.I miss those times!Lately I?ve heard several talk show hosts discuss that multitasking has been found to often be more of a c...

Apple filing details multitasking touch-screen for mobile gaming
2007-12-07 13:49:00 Apple is always had less-than-enthusiastic stance towards gaming, so the company's latest patent filing seems a bit out of character, seeing as it details a multitasking touchscreen that would allow games to be played while still controlling other applications like media players. The system works be categorizing touch inputs and routing the data to the appropriate application -- a simple tap might go to the game, while a longer press might be sent to the media player. According to Apple, "the invention allows various applications to be integrated and used on devices that are not readily suitable for supporting multiple applications at the same time." Of course, there's no word on when we might see this make its way into an actual product, but if this means we might see games on the iPod touch and iPhone, bring it on. Via Engadget

Can Multitasking Ruin Your Work Life Balance?
2007-12-05 00:00:00 When my daughter was very young, she would wander into my office and want to chatter, see what I was doing and generally get my undivided attention. Multitasking and Leisure Time
2007-08-21 18:11:00 In the last few years, I've recognized that I no longer choose to multitask. I'm not sure I consider it a disability, but I do feel the need to write about it.For weeks now, I've been concerned about finishing the final edit of my manuscript. I had asked a number of friends and acquaintances to read it and I needed to input their recommendations, copy-edits or edits that I agreed with. Working from a few different versions of the manuscript took way more time than I had anticipated. And although I sent a version of the manuscript to the publisher 14 days ago, I suddenly felt the need to make some significant changes. I'm almost done--but not quite. At the same time, I had been asked (or I volunteered) to write reviews of two books, to make comments on two others, and to help a friend evaluate her plan for a new website. Although I feel guilty (not a usual emotion for me), until I finish my manuscript I have put all these projects on hold. Why? I'm not sure. What I do know ...
Multitasking, wastes time
2007-08-15 21:36:00 In another blow to women, it turns out that multi-tasking not only wastes time, it may be harmful. In a scientific study (reported here Does Multitasking Save Time?), students were asked to do two tasks at once while their brains were examined using an MRI. Turns out our brains aren’t built for multitasking. “Essentially it slows us ...

Multitasking and stress: What happens when we mix them together? [Cognitive
2007-07-25 16:32:00 Imagine you’re taking a test–just for fun–to see how fast you can add numbers and alphabetize letters. Would it help you complete the test faster if you had a warning before each item indicating whether you’d be adding or alphabetizing? Now imagine you’re taking the same test–only this time the test will be used to determine whether you qualify for a promotion at work. In this, more stressful situation, do you think the warnings would help? Would you change your strategy on the test? There is considerable evidence that cognitive performance changes when we are under stress. For example, women tend to perform worse on math tests than men when they are specifically told the test is designed to detect gender differences. Asian women perform worse on math tests when the opposite occurs, and the stereotype that Asians are better than others at math is invoked prior to the test. Other studies have explored more generic reactions to stress and found that...
