The Hank Williams Jr. Experience
2008-10-29 16:25:00 I know very little about Hank Williams Jr., but I like him for two main reasons. First, the Monday Night Football theme based on his song "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" is an incredible, pump-you-up song. Second, Williams is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. These may be shallow reasons to like Hank Williams Jr., but that works for me.However, I?m starting to get a little worried about Williams. He sang the national anthem during the Monday night game this week while wearing a Tennessee Titans jersey. I can?t say that I agree with him wearing a jersey other than a Steelers one, but I guess that he wanted to make a good impression for everyone in Nashville (even though you would think he would already be well received by Tennessee fans based on Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year awards and the Monday Night Football song). Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend for Williams. In the video below, Williams is shown wearing a Denver Broncos jersey and a Was...

CBS News: They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
2008-04-24 16:43:00 It is time for CBS News to be put down, in the Old Yeller sense of the phrase. It's time to turn out the lights and just start airing Hollywood gossip at 6:30 p.m. The network could follow Schieffer's lead and simply dissolve the thing after the inauguration, maybe keeping 60 Minutes around, either as a commercial-free public service program (because what exec doesn't love a prestige-hogging loss leader?) or under the auspices of CBS' entertainment division (because why keep pretending?). The farewell would be handled with dignified pomp?tributes to Murrow and Severeid and so forth. And if Walter Cronkite is in good health, he could do the honors with a final sign off. I'm serious. That's how bad things are, and that's the way it is. Troy Patterson Slate "Dead Air. Why CBS Should Shutter Its News Division"Dorothy Maguire as Katie Coates "Old Yeller" 1957: "If that don't beat all. I never saw such a dog."

TV News: Good Night And Good Luck.
2008-04-17 15:10:00 Cindy McCain co-hosts ABC's "The View" Monday. NYDNABC News weatherdude Sam Champion fronts a "20/20" special Friday night on the weather: "Your Weather: Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity." NYDN Will Champion address stupid weathermen tricks like cute dog props? Charlie Gibson fronting a shameless promotion of Babs Walters's new book with a special on how special she is. NYP Echoing what I've pimped, Columbia Journalism Review advises CBS News to not pay Katie Couric's heir an obscene salary. I've gone further suggesting CBS just bag the evening news. TV Newser: The closing session of this year's RTNDA conference pondered the question "What Would Murrow Do?" He'd kill the formerly noble industry that spawned him in the halcyon days of TV news. NBC could end up sold if parent company GE's earnings continue to drop. "Once-isolated calls for at least a partial breakup of the conglomerate have become a chorus, with NBC Universal, appliances and GE Money, the consumer finance u...

No Debates for CBS News and Katie Couric?
2008-03-05 15:31:00 ?It wasn?t a financial decision. It?s a programming decision and finding an appropriate time to put it in prime time. It does cost a fair amount of money in preemption costs to put them in prime time. But that wasn?t the primary reason it didn?t happen.?-- Sean McManus, president of CBS News, trying -- unsuccessfully -- to explain why TV's highest paid news anchor, Katie Couric, did not host a single one of the 348 televised presidential debates. He was interviewed by The New York Observer's Felix Gillette for the story "Why No Debate for CBS Star Katie?" What's even worse? Nobody noticed Couric was MIA until this week.Tough week for CBS News anchors past and present, as it was also revealed that former "48 Hours" original anchor Dan Rather was excluded from the celebration of that show's 20th anniversary. He was apparently too busy hosting "The Search for Geraldo Rivera" on HDNet. Oh, and Edward R. Murrow is still dead. (Thanks to MediaBistro.com for the tip!) Amazon.com Widgets

Olbermann's Oy Toy
2008-01-25 14:41:00 While I'm on the subject of May-December romances, it's only fair to counter Katie Couric and her 17-years-younger objet d'boink with Keith Olbermann's quarter-century-younger live-in lover. Not only that you've repeatedly implored me to dig into Keith's baby girl. At least Katie's guy has his own dough. As smart as the 48-year-old Olbermann is he fell victim to an Anna Nicole - 23-year-old Katy Tur. The 2005 UCLA grad somehow got her talons into Olbermann and, besotted, he moved her into his new NYC luxury digs last year. Here are more photos of the Valley Girl. Miz Katy, unemployed and living off Keith's largesse, lists her "accomplishments" and assets on Al Gorgasm's Current TV media company he owns with vulture lawyer Joel "You Have My Word On It" Hyatt. Katy's LA dad (younger than Keith) is an Emmy-winning journalist and Edward R. Murrow awardee along with his ex-wife - Katy's momma.
