Homoerotic Art Museum (HAM) Is All Meat and No Potatoes
2009-11-10 09:20:00
Ooh la la! I'd love to spend an afternoon roaming the halls of the Homoerotic Art Museum (NSFW). Too bad its just a virtual museum at this point run by fans of male imagery. The museum is divided into different halls representing art from different geographical locations plus a research room for works that they don't have enough data on to properly categorize. They are always seeking new submissions and data about the art that they already have archived. The Homoerotic Museum- the HAM, is all meat and no potatoes!...
A Turkey Trot for tykes at the Kohl's Children's Museum
2009-11-02 20:36:00
The "Turkey Trot" event at the Kohl's Children's MuseumOn Sunday, November 8, families can participate in a "Turkey Trot" to raise money for the Kohl's Children's Museum in Glenview (which is a wonderful local resource for families by the way). The 3rd annual "Turkey Trot" promises fun for the whole family. Participants will walk a course around Habitat Park (the museum's outdoor exhibit). The kiddos will be assigned a runner number, receive stickers for each lap they run and a golden turkey trophy to take home. The morning also features live entertainment by Stand and Clap, arts and crafts, and breakfast goodies. Plus, they are going to have a bouncy house (my kids would pretty much go anywhere for the...
Art & soul event at the Chicago Children's Museum
2009-10-16 21:32:00
In recognition of National Child Health Month, Andersonville art-based counseling center art & soul has partnered with the Chicago Children's Museum to highlight the social and emotional benefits of art for children. I was at the Children's Museum this morning and saw the display featuring artwork from kids ages 1 through 15. I admire this project and whole-heartedly believe in the value of artmaking for all children. In conjunction with this exhibit, art & soul is hosting a special event that I want to tell you about (because it is worthwhile and also free). On Thursday, October 22 (when admission to the Children's Museum is free), your little ones can participate in hands-on artmaking themselves from 5:00 until 8:00 pm....
French gamers call for a retro game museum
2009-09-23 15:01:00
A group of French video game enthusiasts are lobbying authorities to set up a dedicated museum of retro-gaming in the country. The group, called MO5, say the new museum should be interactive, allowing users to play the old game systems. The proposed "National Institute of Digital Sciences" would have an original working version Pong, one of the earliest games released in 1972. However, the group acknowledged it would take time to actually happen. A spokesman for the group, Philippe Dubois, told BBC News that video games are there to be played, not just looked at. "We have a collection of more than 30,000 parts and 1500 different game machines – ranging from arcades to home consoles – which continues to grow. "In France we have a rich culture of arts, painting, literature and cinema, but we are in danger of losing our inheritance of video game history," he added. Retro collection The group say they have been in touch with the French National...
Seville: The Bullfight Museum
2009-09-20 07:01:00
Near the Torre del Oro, we began to see sculptures of Matadors. We were near the Bullfight museum. One of the things we planned to do in Spain was to watch a bullfight. Bullfighting is very much a popular sport in southern Spain unlike in Barcelona where people do not like bullfighting. Our hotel concierge told us that summer is the off season for bullfighting. It was disappointing to us but at least we planned to just visit the Bullfight Museum.

Open Sun Glasses for the Kirkland Museum by Woodeye Glassware
2009-09-09 13:56:00
I have been hard at work and completely neglecting my friends here (among other things), and I completely forgot to post a link to my new "Open Sun" glasses created especially for the Kirkland Museum in Denver, CO. The museum store manager contacted me a couple months ago to ask if I could create a special series of glasses based upon the "Open Sun" series of painting created by Vance Kirkland which are center pieces of their museum. After much effort I was able to create glasses that almost perfectly reflect the paintings they are based on. The first series of of 10 sets are Very Limited Edition, and feature double painted, reverse gradations. Only 10 sets will be made and are available exclusively thru the Kirkland Museum. I have also created some less expensive, etched only and single paint versions that will be available within the next couple weeks.MAJOR UPDATE!!! I was just contacted by the Kirkland Museum to let me know the museum director and curator have placed a set ...
A Special Thanks from Keep Laramie Dinos
2009-09-06 21:14:00
All of you who have visited the blog or visited with us in person and via e-mail, we would like to thank you for your vocal and continued support of the museum through closure. Because of you, we will have a geological museum again, a unique historical, scientific and educational Wyoming gem on the University of Wyoming campus. We would especially like to thank the Mears family, who have made such a generous gift to the museum so that the ball can roll in the direction of reinvention. Imagine; finally, after years of talking and wishing, those who visit and use the museum will have one that is even better than before. It's unfortunate that a crisis had to arise in order for the magnitude of importance of the museum to be realized by the upper echelon of university administration, but they finally seem to understand. We would also like to thank Department of Geology and Geophysics Head Art Snoke for the effort he has expended in concert with Foundation Director Ben Blalock to esta...

Vermont Balloon Rally at Shelburne Museum Sept 4 - 7
2009-09-04 02:36:00
Here's another reason to visit the Shelburne Museum, a magnificent facility that I consider a must-see in Vermont. This Labor Day weekend, the Vermont Balloon Rally will be held on the grounds of the museum from September 4 through 7. About 30 balloons are expected to attend. Spectators will be allowed to walk among the balloons and watch the flights each day early mornings and late afternoons. Children are no only allowed, they're encouraged to come see this colorful event. There will also be face painting, bounce house, free rides on the museum's antique carousel, nighttime balloon glow and a balloon walkabout where kids and adults can actually walk through a partially inflated balloon lying on the ground. Rides will be offered including tethered rides and full flight rides. If you would like to do a full flight, it's best to make reservations in advance which you can do on the website. Thanks to some generous corporate sponsorship, prices for the event are very low: childre...

20 Year Old Man Sues Museum for Incident 18 Years Ago
2009-08-27 23:57:00
A 20 year old Wilmette man is suing a museum for an incident that allegedly happened 18 years ago when he was two years old and placed fake food from an exhibit in his mouth. Jonathan D. Herz is suing Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago for an incident that occurred in 1992 when the museum had a "Jewel Food Store" exhibit with fake plastic food.  At the time, according to the complaint, Herz "placed a plastic mock food item in his mouth and immediately thereafter was severely injured from such action." The complaint asserts that the museum disregarded its duties to "maintain the premises in a safe condition and free from attractions and activities which could cause the spread of contagious diseases....

UW Geological Museum Opens Tuesday
2009-08-23 01:00:00
From Keep Laramie Dinosaurs-- Aug. 22, 2009 --The University of Wyoming Geological Museum will be open on a part time basis beginning Tuesday, Aug. 25. The museum hours will be 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays during the 2009-0 academic year. It will be closed Mondays. The museum is able to open because the UW Foundation provided funding for a part-time security guard to ensure the safety of the collection. UW President Tom Buchanan has thanked the Foundation for its support in securing funding to make the collections accessible for public viewing. The museum closed June 30 as one of a series of steps taken to meet an $18.3 million state budget cut that took effect July 1.At least it'll be better than having it close to the public all day-- but it's not enough! Please do whatever you can to raise enough money to have the museum open to the public FULL TIME!

Science at the Creation Museum
2009-07-01 18:24:00
What happens when a group of scientists—attendees at the North American Paleontological Convention—take a trip to the Creation Museum? Science and religion clash, that's what. The New York Times has an article this week about that very occurrence, with interviews with both the scientists and the staff at the Museum. There are some scary things in what the creationists have to say. Apparently the Great Flood was the cause of everything that turned the world into what it is today, including creating the layers of soil and rock that paleontologists dig through, as well as separating the continents and putting them where they are (all in a matter of a few days, not over the course of billions of years). One wonders what happened to all of the lava that would have welled up if you had ripped apart a massive land mass that quickly. One also must wonder if the Great Flood changed the rate at which carbon-14 decays, since that's how scientists determine how old the vario...

Museum Spotlight: National Museum of Mexican Art
2009-06-22 21:16:00
If my profile of Nicole Gallery started the series, "Bright Colors and Uplifting Art from Countries in Conflict", then our next installment will be the Nation Mexican Museum in Pilsen. The above sentence sounds flip, but I'm fascinated by cheerful art that comes from artists who grew up in a countries mired in conflict, and contrast that against the depressing work of artists who were raised in a place of privilege. I recently read the biography of a artist who described the violence, grit and angst in her work as stemming from feeling socially alienated as an adolescent. Really? That's the best she's got? Anyway, currently on display is Miradas: Mexican Art from the Bank of American Collection, and Muralla: Sobre Lienzo,...

We Must Refrain from Politicizing Holocaust Museum Shooting
2009-06-11 11:05:00
As a Jew, I am painfully aware of the persecution my people have endured for at least two millenia, perhaps longer.  It seems we have been singled out throughout history. The periods of tolerance and acceptance our ancestors have enjoyed all too often gave way to eras of renewed discrimination and increased marginalization.  While Jew-hatred ...
The Holocaust Museum Shooting & the Persistence of Anti-Semitism

It should come as no surprise to those who follow left-wing blogs that some were quick to blame mainstream conservatives for the actions of the lone, loony extremist who opened fire earlier today at the Holocaust Museum in our nation’s capital, murdering security guard Stephen Tyrone. At present, there is little (if any) evidence that this ...

The show went well and was very well attended. We've decided to do several shows a year, so look for our schedule on our websites or in our newsletter. Since we plan to do shows, I traded in my Mercedes SLK-230 convertible for a Suzuki XL-7. It was pretty sad, as I bought the Mercedes several years ago with commission checks from my tech sales job. Guess I'm really letting go of that old life! I only hope one day soon I can buy a new convertible with sales from my art. Gatlinburg Vacations - Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum Part 2
2009-03-24 14:47:00
Robert Ripley’s mission in traveling around the world was to find the unusual, the odd as well as the just plain weird. He would document the things that he found, and bring what he could back with him from his travels to show to people. Those collections now make up the largest group of oddities that are part of the Ripley’s museums all over the world, including Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum Gatlinburg. The museum has special rates for groups of 20 or more, as well as school field trips, although a museum of oddities might not be as educational as a museum of actual history, science, or information. However, for sightseers that travel to Gatlinburg, it’s definitely worth a look if you’ve got the time to kill and an intrigue about all of the oddities that you’ll find inside. The museum is located in and around the rest of the Ripley’s themed attractions, so you can spend an entire day or two just exploring the Ripley’s attractions. If you’d rather see shru...
