Archaeology Weekend at Lake Champlain Maritime Museum
2008-09-11 03:25:00
Hundreds of old shipwrecks lie at the bottom of Lake Champlain, well preserved by its chilly waters.September is Archaeology Month in Vermont and there are a number of interesting events open to the public. One of the main events is this weekend at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum located near Vergennes, a few miles south of Burlington. The museum has long been active in marine archaeology and its staff has helped in the locating and documenting of many shipwrecks lying at the bottom of the lake, some of them dating back to the Revolutionary War. This weekend the museum will be showing three films: one about a gunboat from Benedict Arnold's fleet still lying at the bottom of the lake; the second about the birch bark canoe as used by native Americans and showing the construction of a replica of a canoe from the 1600's; and a third film presenting the findings of the Middlebury College ten year sonar survey of the lake bottom. Visitors can work the Shipwreck Simulator to lea...
Toba Minato Machi Bunka Kaikan & Edogawa Ranpo
2008-09-10 05:23:00
??????????A short walk from the oyster bars' side of Toba Station is the quirky Toba Minato Machi Bunka Kaikan. The museum is the preserved former residence of local artist and writer Junichi Iwata and displays manuscripts, letters and every day items from the lives of Iwata and his literary friend Edogawa Ranpo. Iwata drew illustrations for Edogawa Ranpo's stories and the two shared the house for a while, when Ranpo was living and working in Toba. Also on show are photographs dating back to 1936, many featuring the famous women divers (ama) of the area. The subsequent fame of Edogawa Ranpo (1894-1965), aka Taro Hirai, far outweighs that of his associate Junichi Iwata, and it is the personal effects of the noted mystery writer, including his trademark beret and round glasses, on display at the museum, that attract most interest.Ranpo was an admirer of western thrillers and mystery tales, especially those of Edgar Allan Poe. Among Ranpo's best known works are: Phantom of the Universe...

Portraits of Buenos Aires / Retratos de Buenos Aires / Portraits de Buenos
2008-09-05 04:03:00
A few posts ago, I mentioned that I?m part of a photography group from Flickr, called ?Porteña?. As a matter of fact, I haven?t been posting here as often as I wish, due to, I must admit, my addiction to Flickr. It turns out that we are having our first collective exhibition ?Portraits of Buenos Aires?, at the Bar Palacio Museo Fotográfico Simik, on Federico Lacroze Ave. 3901, in Chacarita. And Palermo Viejo will be present on my photo. So, from September 4 to 30, from 8 AM to 12 AM, Mondays tru Saturdays, you can visit the photography exhibition and discover pictures of Buenos Aires by 27 photographers who love this city and enjoy the museum (it gathers a collection of antique cameras, photos, etc.), while you have a cup of coffe or a beer. I hope you like it!Hace algunos posts, mencioné que formaba parte de un grupo de fotografía de Flickr, llamado Porteña. Museum Liaunig By Austrian Architects Querkraft. Museum Liaunig a project of industrialist and art collector Herbert W. Liaunig near Neuhaus in Carinthia, Austria was open last week. The Austrian architects Querkraft designed this new museum which houses the contemporary art and gold objects collected by Herbert W. Liaunig. The museum Liaunig projects out on two sides over steep-sided ground. The new museum looks more like a work of land art. But only a small part of the museum building is visible.Other Posts:Vehicles Made Of Wood.Creativity With Recycled Tires.Gardens With Distinctive Looks.Who Says Staircases Can't Be Creative.Spaghetti Cabling & Need For Cable Management.

International Perfume Museum to reopen
2008-08-31 01:50:00
The International Perfume Musuem (Musée international de la parfumerie) in Grasse, France, will reopen on October 18th after 4 years of renovations: Created in 1989, this one-of-a-kind museum is found in the highly symbolic City of Grasse, the cradle of the luxury perfume trade that began in France. Dedicated to one of the most prestigious traditional French businesses, the International Perfume Museum, a public institution devoted to safeguarding and promoting the international heritage of scents, aromas and perfumes, allows visitors to discover the unique history of the great perfume Houses and producers. The renovations have doubled the size of the original museum; new features include a temporary exhibition room, an 80-seat lecture hall, a restaurant and new classrooms. Meiji-mura Museum
2008-08-25 02:57:00
Wishing to escape the confines of my apartment and the heat I travelled to Meji-Mura Museum for the day.Meji-Mura is an open-air museum that contains over 60 buildings from the Meji Era 1868-1912.Various buildings from all over Japan have been brought there and are on display. One can walk into a school,a jail and a traditional bath house for instance or eat at one of the restaurants that operate out of the historical premises.Meji-Mura is located near Inuyama which is about a 45 to 60 minute train ride from Nagoya depending on which train you use. From Inuyama Station you need to catch a shuttle bus which takes you to Meji-Mura.A little expensive and time consuming to get there(the shuttle bus takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic) but worth it.There are ample signs in English at Inuyama Station that direct you to the Museums shuttle bus stop. The small building above comes from Tokyo and was the residence of Ogoto Mori and Soseki Natsume.Various displays inside each buildin...

Georgia O?Keeffe exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine ?
2008-08-21 17:49:00
I recently learned of a unique exhibit of 18 pieces of Georgia O'Keeffe's work and 60 photographs of her and her life. The art exhibit runs through September 7, 2008 at the Portland Museum of Art in Portland, Maine."For the first time, the exhibition pairs paintings and photographs to establish two opposing public images of the artist. Georgia O'Keeffe and the Camera includes works by famous photographers such as Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Eliot Porter, Todd Webb, and Arnold Newman. The exhibition will also include examples of O'Keeffe's paintings and works on paper that mark major moments in the development of her art"*If you live in the area or are looking for a last minute Labor Day vacation, I encourage you to check out this exhibit.O'Keeffe was both the artist and the subject of art. This exhibit shows how both roles fortified her career.Looking for more? Another FaMiss article about O?Keeffe: Changing Our Dreams into What We Do: Georgia O?Keeffe vs. Sylvia PlathPodca...

Pakistan in Washington?s Smithsonian Museum
2008-07-24 07:42:00
Owais MughalOutside Pakistan any reference to mother land naturally catches our attention (see Beijing?s Pakistani Connections and Pakistani Towels in Missouri). Last week I got chance to visit Washington DC?s Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). This museum was opened in 1910 and was among the first building built for Smithsonian to house national treasures. Among other treasures of knowledge and research preserved in the museum, there is a section dedicated to Pakistan. The whole theme of Pakistani pavilion is around a ?bazaar? being the center of social activities in a Pakistani village.Shown above is a scene of Pakistani village depicted at Smithsonian Museum of Natual History in Washington D.C.While the information given about Pakistan in the museum is correct and displayed articulately, my only comment is that it does not cover the whole story. It gives an impression as if Pakistan is all tribal or nomadic and it completely ignores the well-settled, pretty mo...

Nagoya Tram and Subway Museum
2008-06-16 04:13:00
I visited the Nagoya Tram and Subway Museum earlier in the week. Its near Akaike subway station on the Tsuramai Line.Theres a wall map at the station. The museum is basically a block behind the station.Turn right as you leave Exit 2.Walk straight down the hill.At the end of the street turn right and head towards the traffic lights and Route 153.At the intersection cross the road and turn right. You should be heading up the hill on Route 153.Theres a big sign indicating the museum over the traffic lanes. There are four old tram and subway cars on display in the Museum. In the middle of the display hall there are a number of computer and interactive displays which proved popular with the noisy throngs of kids present.Another drawcard was the large model railway based loosely on Nagoya. There were model buildings of JR Central Towers and Nagoya TV Tower around which model shinkansen trains circled endlessly. With their noses and fingers pressed firmly against the display glass an employee wa...

823 Congress, Austin TX 78701 // West 35th Street, Austin TX, 78703 // 512-495-9224 This is truly a museum for the casual and creative Austinite. With two locations and loads of interesting exhibits and programs, AMOA is a great cultural destination for students, adults, and even parents and caregivers of young children. The downtown location is a sleek and modern space, while the Laguna Gloria campus, AMOA’s original home, is housed within a 1916 Italiante villa. The primary home of the AMOA Art School, Laguna Gloria is located on property once owned by Stephen F. Austin, and was the residence of the legendary Clara Driscoll. Overlooking Lake Austin, and with 12 acres of beautiful grounds and gardens, Laguna Gloria is worth a visit purely on historical merit. Both locations have permanent and changing exhibits, and both have space available for private functions. One of the hallmarks of both AMOA locations is the informal structure and feel. No stuffy, hallowed grounds here...

85.---Roman Eagle., from Old England: A Pictorial Museum (1845), added on 6

The cavalry and the war-chariots of the active Britons met the invader on the beach; and whilst the soldiers hesitated to leave the ships, the standard-bearer of the tenth legion leaped into the water, exclaiming, as Cæsar has recorded, “Follow me, my fellow-soldiers, unless you will give up your eagle to the enemy! I, at least, will do my duty to the republic and to our general!” (Fig. 85.) The Romans made good their landing. The symbols of the great republic were henceforward to become more familiar to the skin-clothed and painted Britons (Fig. 79); but not as yet were they to be bound with the chain of the captive (Fig. 81). Impresionan.
