A Hidden Jewel in Orange, Texas . . . Stark Museum of Art
2008-05-22 03:24:00 As anyone who’s read this blog over the years knows, I’m a fanatic for the frontier west. I love reading books on western history (there are several reviewed on this blog) as well as writing about the artists who captured the frontier before the major influx of Europeans to America. Among my favorite artists are George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Remington. While Bodmer and Catlin captured the frontier of the early 19th century, later artists like Bierstadt and Remington painted (and sculpted) the iconic west of cowboys, Indians, and the grand western landscape. Once in awhile, I’m lucky enough to run across museums that focus on western art and American Indian art. One is the museum in Roswell, New Mexico (surprised?); the other is the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas. The Stark Museum of Art is part of the Stark Foundation, an organization developed to improve the quality of life in Southeast Texas by encouraging, promoting and ass...

Tower over London
2008-05-11 20:30:00 Offering fantastic views right across London, Tower Bridge is one of the most famous constructions of its type in the world. Now open to the public as a museum, the medieval-looking bridge, which is still in use, was opened in 1894.Designed by Sir Horace Jones, it is notable for its engineering ingenuity, hydraulically-operating twin bascules, raising them to allow space for tall ships and boats to pass through. It is possible to call ahead to find out when a bridge lift is occuring, so visitors have a chance to see this impressive sight, taking place approximately 1,000 times a year. The in-house museum, the Tower Bridge Experience, offers a fascinating insight into the history of the bride by way of animatronic characters, video and computers. From the walkways, which are situated 42 metres above the River Thames, visitors can see breathtaking views of some of the British capital's most noteworthy landmarks, including Canary Wharf, St Paul's Cathedral and the London Eye.

Museums on Us 2008 Program by Bank of America Announced with First Weekend
2008-04-29 20:45:00 SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Last year, while visiting San Diego, we learned about the program sponsored by Bank of America in which free museum and gallery admission was provided to this bank's card holders. This program was offered during the month of May 2007. It enabled us to visit multiple art and exhibition spaces at no cost, and that is always good. You could bring one person along with you as part of the program even if they did not have the specific card. Now, in the year 2008, the program has been expanded. During the first weekend of every month, with your Bank of America check, ATM or credit card you can get free admission to over seventy museums throughout the country. Not bad at all. I am definitely going to plan a few visits during this period. Folks at Bank of America have created a dedicated web page with the details (see bottom of article for link) though it is completely in Flash and somewhat user unfriendly for a quick overview. I have compiled all of the ...

Hungarian National Museum
2008-03-25 19:30:00 Reportedly dating back over 200 years, the Hungarian National Museum has a grand history and a grand facade to match. The neo-classical building, designed by Mihály Pollack and built between 1837 and 1847, is a sight to behold itself, with a huge central portico and eight Corinthian columns supporting an ornamental frieze. But with seven permanent displays focusing on the history of the country from its foundation until the modern day, visitors will not want to linger outside for long.Exhibitions focus on Hungary's geography and ethnography, divided into five major sections - archaeology, middle ages, new era, numismatics and historic paintings. As one of the regions richest museums, it is also home to the Hungarian Holy Crown and coronation jewels, as well as an archaelogical library housing over 100,000 volumes.Covering over 8000 sq metres, this is the largest museum in Hungary. The building itself is a site of historical significance, as the place where the patriotic poet San...
