Ten most valuable teaching secrets of a Ph.D. in music education
2008-03-03 07:58:00
This post is brought to you by John Jinright, aka Dr J. from jinright.edublogs.org. John is Ph.D. in music education and currently teaches music theory, applied oboe and bassoon, audio production at TROY University. Before that, John worked in the music business, started a music store and finally decided that teaching fits him best. Dr. J played vibes in a Dixieland band (Jack Marshall and the Alabama Dixiecats), and piano in a big band (Tony Marino and The Checkmates) plus filled in on percussion with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, studied mixing with Charles Dye, Ed Seay and Roger Nichols, three Grammy-winning engineers/producers and film/tv scoring with composer/sound designer Michael Wynne. Quite an impressive history, reason for which I am more than happy to introduce Dr. J to you. So, here we go: Howdy, Ya’ll. I’m honored to guest blog on GuitarFlame.com. Frankly, I don’t think of myself as a great guitarist, but I’d like to share my best tips on p...

Music Performance and Music Education - Can I perform and teach?
2008-01-30 21:31:00
You went to school to be a ?band director? not a ?performer.?  You mean I have to do both?  Well, yes you do. Well first and foremost, you went to college to become a music educator.  A few months back someone asked about how they will stay active as a performer once they start to teach.  Well, its difficult at times, but it is possible.  For me, I arrive at school an hour early, just to do my daily trumpet warm-ups.  It does seem to make for a better day, as I really do enjoy playing.  After my hour warm-up, students are already in my room ready for first period.  So I get a solid warm-up daily.  I play every lesson period that I can (keeps the endurance going) and then try to work on something everyday after school.  I try to get a good two hours of practice a day, most days I can do this, but sometimes its not possible. I?m active in my area as a musician, but where I am located??..there?s not always many playing opportu...

Music Education Linked to Academic and Income Success
2007-11-17 18:55:00
Parents who consult with me are generally focused on helping their children with language and reading skills. Often though, in the course of conversation, they say something like, "By the way, my son, or daughter, is quite good at music but wants to stop the lessons. What should I do?" As with all questions of teaching and learning, the answers are not simple. Still, all other things being equal, my advice is generally to have the lessons continue. One of my deeply held beliefs is that the development of skills--in all areas--has enormous payoff for a person over the course of his or her life. Many times, students have come back to me to tell me how pleased they are that they did continue--because as adults, they find great pleasure in music and in the competence they have in this realm. Now, via a recent Harris Poll of 2,565 adults, there is evidence to support what I have been encouraging. The study showed that whether it's chorus, band or violin lessons, music impacts Ameri...

Music Education Blogging: A Challenge!
2007-09-01 16:48:00
The great folks at the Music Educator?s Network have issued a challenge: In light of this I invite every reader to join me in my challenge to myself: I WILL BLOG! I will write at least one post per month. With each school year comes new ideas, new challenges, and a new ?to do? list. Won?t you join me in harnessing the power of a blogging community of music educators? I KNOW this is a great idea.  If nothing else, writing clarifies thought and expands your thinking pattern(s).  Blogging will do that and so much more for you and your students.  Since I started blogging a year ago, I have had almost 100,000 unique hits at mustech.net and over 200 hundred discussion points with people on this blog.  I?ve grown tremendously from those conversations and it has sparked further curiosity? In my opinion it?s a win-win for everyone involved in the process.  Yes, many times people do not agree with me about a topic but isn?t that the point of an...
Grove City College: First Day Back At The Grove?
2007-08-28 00:14:00
This article is from MUSicTECHnology.net  -~Copyright 2007, J. Pisano/mustech.net College officially started today and I can say it went pretty well.  I don?t dread the start of school, I actually look forward to it.  The students are the lifeblood of any school and with out them, well?it?s pretty lifeless.  I think as teachers we should be excited about school starting, after-all isn?t that why we chose to be teachers?  All jobs/careers have their tensions, headaches, and unnecessary ?hoops?? at least we get some time to ?recoup?! In classes today, we had the normal first day of class ?rigaramol?: add/drops, early and lates, books, etc.  It?s an exciting time for the students, especially the freshmen.  It?s kind of fun to watch the freshmen try to figure out who is an upperclassmen or the ?where? and ?what? of their first few days.  Very quickly they assimilate into the ?know?. Wow, has class equipment changed since I was an un...

2007-07-29 07:36:00

Free Music Education Resources From The U.S. Army and Navy

This article is from MusTech.net ~Copyright 2007 MusTech.net and J. Pisano About three years ago I attended a Jazz Ambassador?s concert in Chicago at the Midwest Clinic. At it, the director spoke of a number of resources that they make available free to the public. One of their offerings was a complete Jazz chart entitled Porch Swingin; we played it at one of last year?s concert. There are a number of free resources including lesson plans, music charts, articles and other resources that would be of interest to any music educator (not just U.S. music educators!). The U.S. military bands? also offer requestable free CDs of most of their literature. As you may know, these bands ARE the heritage of our own concert band programs in the U.S. and you can be sure that the recordings they offer are of the highest qualities both in musicianship and audio fidelity. How Music Works part I
2007-07-09 20:58:00
Music is mysterious stuff. It?s completely invisible. You can?t smell it, taste it or feel it in a normal sense, yet it can touch you. Fair enough you can hear it, but what makes music different from anything else you may hear? After all, it uses the same parts of your body you would use ...
Improvisation in Indian music? ?ManoDharma?
2007-06-29 17:49:00
In the two main forms of Indian classical music, improvisation plays a very significant role. In the South Indian variety of classical music, Manodharma comes into the main foray much later into the concert, within a span of 3-4 hours. In the North Indian music, there are two main styles, which can be termed classical. a)Dhrupad ...

2007-06-10 10:01:00
As far as rock guitar lead is concerned, it is the scale of all scales, the mother lode so to speak, the scale used early and often by such lead guitar greats as Jimmy Page, Edward Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Slash, and Neal Schon, to name a few. If ...
The Top 25 Music Education and Music Technology Blogs As Listed By Technora
2007-05-25 06:13:00
AN URGENT CALL: HELP ME COMPLETE THIS LIST!  Well, I have to tell you I honestly tried to put together this list but? we?re awful as music educators getting the word out about our blogs.   There are only 133 out of 70+million blogs in the world labeled as ?music education? in Technorati.  Of those 133, about half of them are ?fake? blogs or ?splogs? and have nothing to do with music education. So, graciously, taking the the number ?66? for real ?music education blogs?, we find that those listed on Technorati make up a mere .00000008% of the blogs in the world. Woot! Interestingly enough, I started this topic with the idea of only considering Music Education blogs.  I couldn?t find enough relevant blogs within the results while searching for the term ?Music Education? so I added ?Music Technology? to the ?mix? and expanded the search.  I still couldn?t fill the list!  Now? I know that there are a few...
Add A Little Fanfare To Your Commencement
2007-05-19 06:38:00
"Every year I have between five and eight trumpeters play for Baccalaureate and Commencement.  The trumpet fanfares add a regal mood and ?air of importance? to the events that not only look and sound nice, but also is a visual boon for the music department.  Many high schools and colleges have the traditional concert band or wind ensemble play for commencement.  Some areas may have an organ or even a CD (not anyone?s first choice) play.  Regardless of what you may do, it is a relatively easy thing to get a cohort of trumpet players together to do this and it adds a special flavor to the event(s). My recipe for the trumpeters at our Commencement and Baccalaureate: First, early on, I stress the importance to the undergraduates of performing for the seniors, creating a seriousness about the importance of the fanfare group.  I talk about how they will appreciate the fanfares when it?s their turn to ?walk?.  I also have the advantage...
A Bloggable Moment: Visual learners in the Bandroom
2007-05-16 05:48:00
Excerpt about this great article/post from MUSicTECHnology.net: "Today confirmed something that I guess I?ve always known- the vast majority of my students are visual learners (Dunn, Thies, & Honigsfeld, 2001). After 18 years as a high school teacher, I certainly have been through my share of professional development and the study of learning styles, but it is only recently that I have made a concerted effort to bring learning theory into my daily teaching practice. As a band director, I am always focused on my next performance. There have been countless times that I have ?rote taught? rhythms (It goes like this, kids?.) because of time constraints or some other pressing matter. In the past few years, I have dedicated myself to teaching concepts and assessing whether my students have learned the material. More about this in other posts, and I am also considering writing a book on the subject?" [more] VISIT MUSTECH.NET TODAY- Don't miss a beat!  Feeds and destinati...

2007-05-14 11:39:00
Imagine a "dream machine" on wheels. It's easy if you try. But the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is no dream. A state-of-the-art multimedia studio packed in a bus, it's a vehicle for opening the minds of aspiring young musicians. "Swing open the door, step inside, take three short steps into the main cabin and look around," writes Mark Garvey in "Come Together: The Official John Lennon Educational Tour Bus Guide to Music and Video," a recently published history of the bus by Garvey and Yoko Ono Lennon. "You've entered a different world. And whether you're young or old, if you're a person who harbors music, video-editing or any related technical aspirations, you know you've just walked into a candy shop."
