The latest on the fake mutual fund....
2008-05-15 02:36:00 I realized that I hadn't updated the 'mutual fund' that I was helping my FIL sort out and decided to do a quick recap on that little fiasco as well. Some of you might remember already but I'll recap quickly... My FIL came to visit 2 weeks ago and while he was here mentioned to me that perhaps I could help with something. Oh boy.... Sure enough, it's a doozy but then again it always is with

How Mutual Fund Sales Are Compensated In Canada
2008-05-11 07:28:00 In Canada, most mutual funds pay what are known as 'trailers' to firms and advisors. It is a cost that can be embedded in the MER (Management Expense Ratio) of a fund through the 'service fee'. While there are a handful of mutual funds that do not charge a service fee (and resulting trailers), most of them do. (Note that F-Class funds represent versions of mutual funds that have the trailers stripped out of them so that they can be held in special 'fee-based' accounts where the service fees are charged separately.)For the funds that do have service fees, there may be five different versions of the same fund: Front-End Load, Back-End Load, No-Load, the newer Low Load (sometimes referred to as Level Load as well), and finally the F-Class versions. Let's examine the differences by seeing how a representative sample fund can be sold under each option. The Representative Sample FundOur sample fund is a Canadian Equity mutual fund that has a management fee of 1.25% and 'other fees ...

How Do You Benchmark a 130/30 Mutual Fund?
2008-05-05 00:04:00 Back in December I wrote about a type of mutual fund known as the 130/30 fund which I believe will be coming to Canada in the next few years. In a nutshell a 130/30 mutual fund allows a fund manager to not only go long the stocks he/she thinks will go up, but to also short the stocks that he/she thinks are over-priced. Every dollar invested goes into the long stocks and then the manager will short some stocks (equivalent to 30% of the money invested). When you short a stock (selling a stock you don't own), you still receive the sale proceeds. So now the manager has another 30 cents to play with, which he/she uses to go long more stocks. Hence the name 130/30. You can read my original post from back in December by clicking here. There has been some debate as to the best way to benchmark these funds' performance. Standard and Poor's indicated that they were going to launch coverage of the US 130/30 index by creating a screen for what stocks to be shorted by using the lowest 30 rated...

Dollar-Cost Averaging: How to Invest on Mutual Funds and Stocks
2008-02-22 06:28:00 The best way to invest is to, in fact, invest, and to do on a regular basis. It sounds simpleminded, but it?s not. It takes discipline to invest even $300 every month, month in and month out, no matter what. But it is really the key to financial security. And it provides a very important benefit you may not know about: It lets you harness the power of dollar-cost averaging.Dollar-cost averaging frees you from the need to closely monitor the market and the stocks you own to determine (or rather, guess at) just the right moment to buy. By regularly investing the same amount in the same high-quality security month after month, you will acquire fewer shares when the price is high, but you?ll buy more shares when the price is low.For example, suppose you invest $100 a month in a favorite mutual fund. In the first month, shares are $10, so your $100 buys ten shares. The next month, the shares are $20, so you get five shares. You now own fifteen shares and you have invested $200. Your aver...
Tips For Choosing High-Performance Mutual Fund
2008-02-16 16:07:00 Most people who invest in mutual funds don't know what they are doing. They take advice from someone at a bank or perhaps a friend and plunk down money into a fund. Sometimes this strategy works, but most of the time, it doesn't. When you invest your money in a mutual fund, you are trusting someone to invest in the stock market for you. Because of this, you want to be sure this person knows what he or she is doing. Also, you want to make sure that this person is not charging you too much to manage your money for you. Mutual funds fees are "hidden," in the sense that they do not charge you an upfront fee but rather a percentage of the amount of money in your account. If this percentage is too high, you would do better just blindly picking stocks yourself. Here are five helpful tips for choosing the right mutual funds. 1. Keep the fees low. Generally, expense fees should not be much higher than 1% if it is just a basic domestic equity fund. You should never invest money in a fund th...

Top 5 Tax saving Mutual Fund Schemes
2008-02-07 08:43:00 Invest in these Schemes for best of Safety and Returns Most of us have received emails from our HR/Admin asking us to submit the proof of Investments for the purpose of Tax Savings before a specified date and I am sure a lot of us are still in thinking mode as to where to invest for Tax savings. I had written a post last year (How to Invest for Tax Savings?) on the various avenues of tax savings and one more post on Top 5 tax saving funds. Well things have changed from last year in terms of stock market performance and it's right time to review which tax saving or ELSS (Equity linked saving schemes) should we invest in. Well, when I compared the tax saving schemes last year, I concentrated on the Top performing funds over a 5 year and 3 Year timeframe. We are currently going through such a phase in the stock markets which makes us think of saftey of our investments too. Hence I have introduced one more filter in terms of Risk profile of each fund (based on Standard deviation) and Y...

Fidelity Magellan Fund (FMAGX): Should you buy the FUND or STOCKS instead?
2008-01-17 03:59:00 Fidelity Investments' decision to allow investors unfettered entry to its storied Magellan Fund (FMAGX) for the first time in a decade offers a promising opportunity for those who missed out on its quiet success in recent years. But while fund openings can portend a coming run-up in performance as managers lay down new bets, investors shouldn't buy into Magellan with an expectation that it is poised to take off.Like any other investment, isn't without risk and that should be just part of an overall investment plan. Some potential buyers are still enamored with a fund that did great things a generation ago. But Peter Lynch left the fund 18 years ago, and the fund has gone through several lead managers in that time. Since its peak eight years ago, when assets topped $100 billion, the fund has suffered net outflows every year.On the other hand, Harry Lange, who has managed Magellan Fund since October 2005, said a better balance of cash flows would give him the cash needed to pounce ...
