Crossing Over: My Journey to Ironman
2009-09-19 23:04:00
To me, Ironman isn't about checking another item off the Bucket List. It's about pushing yourself to go beyond your mental limits to really see what's possible. As famed runner Steve Prefontaine said, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."By Richard RatayIt's been 36 hours since I crossed the finish line at Ironman Wisconsin. My back hurts. My feet hurt. I have blisters the size of quarters on my feet. Even my ego is bruised.I took kicks to the head. I was broasted by the sun. I don't think I ever want to taste a sports drink again. My bike and I are not on speaking terms. But I also feel something that I have never...
A Fundamentalist Self-Critique
2009-08-24 05:11:00
The last few years have seen the world wide web do a number on fundamentalism.  I speak particularly of the independent fundamental Baptist (IFB) movement, and the influence of blogs like Sharper Iron (SI). Jason Janz, SI’s founder, published his young fundamentalist survey, and soon thereafter Phil Johnson (of Pyromaniac fame), delivered his speech “Dead Right: ...
Hair Removal- My journey into hell.
2009-08-19 14:30:00
As the Chicago Triathlon and Ironman Madison approach, we will have many different tips and ideas to help you get ready for your races, from tapering to training, we want to make sure you are armed with the right tools to have a fun, safe, successful event.  With that in mind, I went on a journey of discovery, that left me bloody, swollen, cut to shreds and exposed to the world.  I tried to unlock the secrets of successful hair removal. I went seeking out the knowledge and wisdom of some of the finest hair removal experts in the country to not answer the question of why, but how.  Here's what I found out.Endurance athletes shave. Why do we shave ?...

The Bible on Hair Care
2009-05-08 13:49:00
No, I haven’t yet found a Biblical defense for using Pert’s Plus.  I’m talking about what the Bible says about hair length. This may be a surprise to you, but listen to what Paul says in 1 Cor. 11:14-15. Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for ...

We?re Baaack!
2008-09-04 07:44:00
After a summer off, the class is back together. It’s a bit strange. I was actually pretty excited about school starting up again. Reminded me a little of the elementary school excitement. Orientation was interesting. They went over policy again (briefly). I think a lot of the orientation part could have been skipped. One professor decided ...
My Journey
2008-09-02 21:51:00
There are two ways to read this blog. You can either read it as I wrote it or you can read the episodes I have been recounting in the sequence in which they occurred. The egomaniac in me would like to think that the Story of S could, with a certain amount of editing, be turned into a book worthy of publication. Obviously, I couldn't ever let that happen for fear of the consequences but I do sometimes allow myself to fantasise. God knows what inner trauma it would cause me if the opportunity ever arose. However, a book, unlike a blog, cannot give both views. Looking back, I am personally fascinated by the other story in this blog: the personal journey I took as I wrote it.The blog's purpose has changed more than once along the way.In the beginning I didn't really have a clear objective. In fact, I didn't initially intend for it to be a blog with an infidelity theme. I just began to write about what came into my head. But the theme quickly emerged. It was as if my blog became the esca...

I?m ?back to school? next week after Labor Day. Right now I?m trying to enjoy my last few days of vacation and writing this entry while sitting poolside at a resort on the island of Kauai. Originally I was going to make this trip alone. I just wanted to relax before resuming lectures. But then ...
For Now, No Autopsy
2008-08-20 09:49:00
I was supposed to go in for an autopsy yesterday. As I was instructed, I phoned the Pathology Office between 8:15 and 8:30 AM. That’s when I got the bad news. There wasn’t going to be any autopsy at the location I had requested. Unfortunately for me, there wouldn’t be any until Thursday at the ...

Thought of the Day:?I haven't a clue as to how my story will end. But that's all right. When you set out on a journey and night covers the road, you don't conclude the road has vanished. As I drove past the deserts in Utah, I could not help but feel wonder and amazement for this beautiful landscape. You know, Utah was one of the last places to be inhabited in the United States. Science-Based Medicine
2008-07-10 20:01:00
This year I had a course called Evidence-Based Medicine. The point of the class was to educate us on how to use the medical literature to determine the best treatments. Medicine has definitely come a long way from bleeding patients as a form of treatment. Now, we have evidence to lead the way. But I recently ...

Last week, I attended a Memorial Service at my school. The service was held for all those who had donated their bodies for use in the anatomy labs. My Journey to Successfully buying a Home
2008-04-24 16:09:00
A good friend of mine recently bought a house in Sydney, after a long and ardorous search. In talking with him I thought his journey to buying a house would make a great post. He was kind enough to agree to write something for Finance ViewPoint and here is his story with real numbers. Thanks for taking the time to do this EH. There are some great learning points here when or if you are already looking to buy a place in today's tough housing market.Recently my wife and I got married, and for us this was an easy decision. A harder decision was working out where we were going to live and how we wanted to go about becoming financially secure. I have jotted down some of the experiences that we went through recently that may enlighten and assist you in the process of buying a houseFirstly we had to decide where we wanted to live. For me I didn?t care too much but my wife certainly did. She had an area picked out near her parents and family and friends. While it was not a deal breaker for...

As I have stated on my previous post before, I have started my journey of making some bucks on the Internet by blogging and doing sponsored posts. And that was also how I made my first $100 online. I was raw and still in experimental state when I started the journey. Alongside blogging and doing paid ...

The Writing On The (Bathroom) Wall
2008-02-11 07:55:00
Well I’ve seen the writing on the wall. Granted, it was on the wall of a bathroom stall. But this is what it said: School Socks Crime Spays Man… I find the weirdest things ...
