Myanmar says US aid can?t be trusted
2008-06-13 04:02:00
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - As individuals and aid agencies around the world dig into their pockets for funds to help Myanmar’s cyclone victims, the country’s ruling junta said Friday that such assistance from the United States could not be trusted. State media has previously said Myanmar feared Washington was using the cover of humanitarian aid to ...

Desolation in Myanmar
2008-06-06 03:36:00
by Brian McAfee In the aftermath of a major natural disaster, the ongoing tragedy that is playing out in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is unnecessary and criminal in nature. The military junta, that had initially withheld relief aid from reaching the majority of the population most negatively impacted by the May 2-3 cyclone, have reportedly stolen much of the goods and have blocked some people's access to them. Even today, a month after the cyclone struck, over two million are still homeless and hundreds of children have become orphans without steady caretakers. Early on, a peculiar relationship between the junta, U.S. political figures and business interests became quickly evident. Most notably Senator John McCain's political adviser, Douglas Goodyear, and Doug Davenport, another lobbyist linked to McCain and Myanmar, have played major roles in seedy dealings. Another disturbing connection to the regime is UnoCal, representing another outrageous wrong wherein human rights ...

Panty Power: Use Your Underwear to Fight for Peace in Myanmar!
2008-05-31 23:33:00
Questions: How do you scare the bejesus out of the Myanmar (Burma) regime?Answer: Send them your panties! You got that right. A new movement is underway to protest for peace and regime change in Myanmar and the methodology, while a tad unorthodox on the surface, apparently has substance to it. The Panties for Peace campaign plays on the regime leaders? superstitious fear that contact with a woman?s underpants will rob them of their power. Women around the world are asked to post their panties to local Burmese embassies in a bid to strip the regime of its power and bring an end to its gross violations of human rights, especially those committed against Burma?s women. The leaders of the Myanmar military regime are make and superstitious. They fear any contact with female undergarments will sap power from them, effectively, emasculating them. (I am NOT making this up.) To send a loud message to a regime that has murdered thousands of its people, enslaved countless others, subjugates...

Maybe This is Why Myanmar Didn?t Want to Let the U.N. In the Country
2008-05-28 19:23:00
From the International Herald Tribune: A British charity, Save the Children UK, said it had uncovered evidence of sexual abuse of children, some as young as 6, by United Nations peacekeepers and by workers from other international aid groups. Well, Ban Ki-Moon says he is going to get to the bottom of this mess: Calling the sexual exploitation of minors a “very serious issue,” Ban reiterated to reporters that he has a “zero tolerance” policy for such acts by U.N. personnel. “I think that the report is very valuable and does give us some good points to which the United Nations should continue to address this issue,” Ban said. “On all these cases which have been raised, we will very carefully investigate” and will take “necessary measures” where appropriate. When you get done with that, could you tell us what you all did about this: LAST MONTH A CLASSIFIED UNITED Nations report prompted Secretary General Kofi Annan to admit th...

Burma(Myanmar) cyclone linked to Global Warming...
2008-05-20 19:17:00
The hurrendous cyclone in Burma, which has been tipped to be amongst the worst natural disasters in history which left over 15000 deceased has links with Global warming, if Al Gore, an expert on Global Warming and ex-United States Vice- President is to be believed. His logic behind his claim seems to be pragmatic as he attributes this terrible occurance by mother nature to the rising ocean temperatures, courtesy Global Warming. Now we have the "ignorants" who claim Gore is trying to cash in on the loss of innocent lives to stay in the news. But let me remind them this is no ordinary bloke who's making headlines, he's a nobel peace prize winner. Wonder what bothers them when one is genuinely trying to alert people about something that's the biggest threat our planet faces. Even if what he's saying isn't true, do we keep on exploiting the Earth and wait to see if the effects of Global Warming exists? That's for the detractors to decide...

News: Myanmar - begging to aid or forcing to aid?
2008-05-17 21:34:00
From the UN press briefing in Geneva on May 13:The UN Secretary-General registered his deep concern ?and immense frustration? at the unacceptably slow response to the grave humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. They were at a critical point, and unless more aid got into the country ?very quickly? the people faced an outbreak of infectious diseases that could dwarf today?s crisis. The Secretary_General called, in the most strenuous terms, on the Government of Myanmar to put its people?s lives first. It must do all that it could to prevent this disaster from becoming even more serious. From the same briefing:Rupert Colville of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, responding to a question on the fact that it was strange that the Human Rights Council would be holding a Special Session on the global food crisis, but not on the current situation in Myanmar, said (..) there had been discussion to some extent on the possibility of talking about Myanmar, but the Council had a very ...

Myanmar and why they should fear us
2008-05-17 02:11:00
by Pablo Ouziel In the chaotic “west” it is often difficult to gain the attention of the public, but one must be committed to trying due to the severity of our current existential crisis. We are psychotic as a society, we have become so dumb and manipulable that we are truly being led towards digging our own grave and smiling while working. We cannot go on like this. We cannot pretend that we are a decent society with good intentions any longer. We are not! The “west” as a civilization is corrupt and decrepit, “we” are not the bearers of morality in the eyes of the “other” peoples. We are not an exemplary civilization which people admire and adulate. We are too arrogant and ignorant to realize, that we are seen by the “others” like the enemy, because “we” are. As a collective of people, the “west” believes itself to be the holder of the truth, the one which understands what is good for the world. This “west” doesn’t exist however, it is a figment of our imagination,...

Myanmar Military Sells Out Disaster Victims
2008-05-15 09:03:00
Bloggers Unite - Blogging for Human Rights In the most cynical act I can recall, Myanmar's military leaders have denied the right to life of tens thousands of refugees of Cyclone Nargis for greed and political reasons. Rather than pulling out all stops by accepting all aid possible to save as many lives as possible, the government is deliberately allowing death on a massive scale to ensure they are credited with the aide that does get through, and to allow some aide to cyphoned off to line their pockets. I'm sure they have decided they already have too many people, and the storm presents a means to cull the herd. New York Times The directors of several relief organizations in Myanmar said Wednesday that some of the international aid arriving into the country for the victims of Cyclone Nargis was being stolen, diverted or warehoused by the country?s army. The United States military?s Joint Typhoon Warning Center said there was a possibility that ?a significant tropical cyclone...
