Myer building destroyed by fire
2007-09-22 14:11:00 Amazing. Between Harris Scarfe and Myer they probably take up half of the main city block in Hobart and now both have suffered from major fires. Harris Scarfe was lucky that theirs was contained within the electrical switchboard, although they still had to shut for a week whilst the damage was repaired. Now Myer has caught fire and been completely destroyed. Yep, completely destroyed. The roof has collapsed and the floors have collapsed in on them selves. Unlucky me happened to be on call this weekend and I had no idea it was happening. I was pulling my hair out trying to work out why most of the major Government sites in the CBD were going off the air. Turns out Aurora were turning the power off to parts of the city as necessary to support the fire fighters. Most of the major Government sites have UPS (battery backup) power so it was weird as sites would die, then come back, whilst others would be fine only to die again later as the batteries ran out. In 14.2 innings of relief work he has given up one run. What makes me love this guy, however, is not the stats. After watching him pitch in relief, I found it hard not to love the guy. A starter turned closer, Myers has the ability to go two innings to get the save and the management knows it. In the 14.2 innings of work, Myers has 23 strikeouts. He has always had a great K/9 rate. But more than his stats, I just have a feeling about this guy. As a fantasy expert, I know I am not supposed to admit this but I have just fell in love with the guy. I watched him completely fool the cubs hitters -- striking out 5 in 2 inning. As a Cubs fan I wanted the Cubs to mount a comeback but as a fan of baseball, I wanted to see Myers dominate. Mr. Sheehan was one of the few defenders of the decision to move Myers from the starting rotation to middle relief. (Link here but subscription required.) However, he notes the same thing I noted earlier this week. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel removed Myers from a 2-2 game for no apparent reason and watched Antonio Alfonseca give-up a three-run HR in the 9th to lose the game. That Manuel didn't leave Myers in for the ninth indicates to me that he doesn't know how to get the most out of Myers as a reliever, which blows a massive hole in my argument that the move of Myers to the pen made sense. 2007-05-05 18:12:00 ---After being bumped from the Philles rotation after just three bad starts Brett Myers notched his first save last night with Tom Gordon on the 15 day DL with a hurt throwing rotator cuff.Though Myers was posting the best k/9 ratio of his career he was moved to the bullpen because of his loss of control as well as his 1.8 hr/9 rate. These stats have never been a problem for myers in his career, and theres no reason to belive that they should start now. However his stats in the bulpen have been better than ever. Myers is only 26. If Gordon is out for an extended period of time he could be an elite closer. I, along with anyone else who follows Sabermetrics and probably most people who follow baseball, realize that this was one of the worst decisions the Phillies could make. The fact is, though, that there is nothing we - as fans or fantasy players - can do to change it. So what do we do?Hold onto Brett Myers. Do not drop him. If someone in your league does, grab him quickly. Myers has too much talent for Philadelphia to waste in the bullpen. It could be argued that if Philly realized this they wouldn't have put him there in the first place, but that is besides the point.Then, hope for one of two situations to occur.1. Best Case - Philly realizes next week that they made a huge mistake and put him back in the rotation. Hopefully this will take place sooner rather than later, but for now we need to wait it out.2.
