You can't dismiss this anymore as Myers being off to a slow start. He made his ninth start of the season last night, and he was as bad as he has been all season according to Philadelphia Daily News columnist John Smallwood. These are the types of concerns Phillies fans anticipated with Adam Eaton, but Eaton is the fifth starter. Myers and Cole Hamels are supposed to be the meat of the starting rotation. After Myers allowed four runs on eight hits, including two home runs, in a 5-1 loss to the Pirates Sunday, the pitcher, the pitching coach and manager Charlie Manuel all expressed concern about Myers' performance through six starts, particularly a puzzling drop in his velocity and his tendency to compensate by throwing more cutters. Following the loss, Manuel and Myers met behind the manager's closed office door for about 10 minutes. Myers has given up at least two home runs in four of his six starts, and has allowed 10 this season. Normally, the righthander's fastball tops out in the low-to-mid 90s. He hasn't been his aggressive self the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. "I'm closing for nine innings tomorrow," said Myers, who will start Friday against the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. In other words, he's going to let it all hang out. He hasn't so far, which explains his 0-1 record and 6.30 ERA. Myers said he had nothing on the mound in the March 31 season opener against Washington, but he thought that his stuff improved Sunday in Cincinnati. Loyal reader Don Ford, despite being burned by us on the Chris Young v. Michael Bourn roster dilemma, has another question:Do you guys think there is any chance the Phillies will move Brett Myers back to closer? I am looking to add an SP on my roto team, and I thinking about trading Josh Hamilton for Brett Myers. Is that a good deal for me?I think the Phillies will do everything possible to avoid moving Myers back to closer. Haven't they jerked with him enough? Brad Lidge probably will be back soon anyway (whether he'll stay back or be effective is another question).Meanwhile, Hamilton is a solid contributor who was undervalued coming into these drafts. I'd keep him and scour the free agent wire for an SP. I basically never trade hitters for pitchers unless I'm getting a premier stud, and Myers is far from that.
