The Myths Of Social Media And The Truth About Them
2009-09-21 08:57:00 It is a common human psyche that whenever a new thing emerges and explodes in the social circuit, there are lots of opinionated views about the same, and some of them result in myths being born. Social Media is one such example, which has been examined by a plethora of enthusiasts to the minutest of details. In the process many have concluded that there are some ideas which are a complete contrast to the original ideas and thus they have resulted in the myths being formed about Social Media. Let’s get to know – What are the most common Social Media Myths and the truths in them? Social Media helps us calculate various media metrics; but all should be in the form of data. Let me remind you, this is the era where data is available, we are still to reach that Utopian era where knowledge is available on the social media front. To come to a conclusion after fair amount of examination, only data is needed, and not knowledge, because data will never trump the simplest of theor...

Brian Steel Demythologizes Early Foreign-led Sathya Sai Baba Myths
2009-07-23 01:08:00 My previous blog was: Brian Steel On John Hislop?s 27 Years as Sathya Sai Baba?s Spokesman. It refers to the article article: Sathya Sai Baba?s credibility gap: Contributions by John Hislop. (Brian Steel. January 2009). This latter article is a scholarly, most readable and quite long article. Recognizing that many of my readers have heavy demands on their time, I shall select what I think are some of the key lines of his investigations. The reader may like to pick and chose among these - or else, of course aim to read deeply into Steel. At the moment, I am drawing attention to some more recent work of Steel, whose books while yet a follower of Sathya Sai Baba were highly-regarded, as they are now by ex-devotees and other critics of the Sathya Sai cult. Those who have time - perhaps for exhaustive academic, media investigative or book preparation purposes - will find Steel's work indispensible. It is vast and rigorous.

Point for Point with Bruce Byfield on GNU-Linux Desktop Myths
2009-03-18 18:01:00 Bruce Byfield has an interesting list of rebuttals for GNU-Linux myths. Yes, we've all dropped this anvil before, myself included (in only my second post on this site!), but we need to keep dropping it again and again. So here's a few thoughts to add to the points raised: 1. The problem of cross-distro compatibility. To add to that point: Big business needs to meet some actual Linux users and watch them for a day. For instance, I run Slackware, so packages made for my system are few and far. That doesn't bother me in the least. I regularly grab Debian DEB and Red Hat RPM packages and convert them. I get source tarballs an compile them. If something needs a library, I'll find it soon enough on my own. What I'm saying is, Linux users require much less hand-holding than the users of other platforms. Make it for any Linux system in any form, and we'll handle it from there. 3. Hardware support. I actually *would* go so far as to say that GNU-Linux supports more hardware than Wi...

The foam rubber will break down over time and is extremely flammable.6. Carpet will help absorb the noise in your room, however it does not have any value for soundproofing. Keep it on the floor where is was meant to be.5. If your into insane asylum chic, then old mattresses might be your thing. No, not really, they would hav...
Car Leasing Myths Debunked

But how to tell the difference between false and truthful advertising? Half of the time, it is very tricky.Car leasing has been a victim of negative publicity for a long time. Five Common Myths About Life Insurance
2008-06-03 09:23:00 The majority of American households do have some variety of life insurance. But some of us understand how to get the most out of it. Five of the most damaging myths that lead to costly life insurance mistakes... Myth 1: I just need enough life insurance to cover my family's future expenses. Fact: If you really want to provide for your family's well-being, you'll need more than that. The good news is that this extra coverage won't set you back as much as you might think. A typical family should combine the remaining portion of its mortgage ... projected inflation-adjusted annual living expenses for the remainder of the spouse's life ... and college costs if they are a factor (assuming that costs will rise by 3% to 5% per year) to determine the amount the family needs to get by. Subtract the amount the surviving spouse will earn if he/she expects to return to the workforce at some point. Example: A 40-year-old man who's in good health would pay about $875 a year for a simple 20-...

10 Gross Food Myths Debunked
2008-05-28 15:18:00 Food is a deceptive mistress. Seductive, delicious, but also occasionally steeped in bacteria. There are rules (such as the five-second one) we fall back on to determine whether to partake in a particular morsel, yet many don't hold up under scrutiny. For those who've spent hours studying the recently discovered, yet unidentifiable leftovers hiding in the back of the fridge, here's some advice to keep you from spending days in the bathroom.10. And while our clique is living vicariously through her "Stars and the City" night, we know that a Carrie-lifestyle on a Carrie-paycheck is a far cry from the fantasy that drives 20-somethings to New York in droves. Hell - I wouldn't be honest with myself if I didn't admit that the HBO series didn't add kindling to my blazing New York City fire when I was a college student living in North Carolina. My friends and I shop at sample sales or hook each other up with the goodies and perks associated with our own careers. Despite our decent upper-middle class incomes and jobs in the entertainment, fashion and publishing industries, even the cheapest bottle service is out of all of our budgets - if we plan t...

Common Myths From The Weight Loss Crowd
2008-05-22 17:26:00 Myth: You?ll be OK with a high protein/low carb diet Fact: This type of diet aims to secure most of the daily required amount of calories from protein foods, such as meat, dairy products and eggs, with a very small part taken from foods containing a lot of carbs (bread, pasta, potatoes and fruits). The biggest problem with this diet is that many common and popular foods are forbidden, which makes it easy for the user to get bored or frustrated. When boredom and frustration set in, quitting time is never far off. Another problem is the lack of nutrients that are usually brought in by carbohydrate foods, while allowing the user to eat bacon and cheese that raise cholesterol levels. The bottom line is that high protein/low carb diets result in fast weight loss in some users, but it?s not just fat that goes away. People also lose some of their lean muscle mass and a lot of water as the kidneys work harder to rid the body of excess waste from protein and fat. Advertisement: read more
