2008-02-24 15:35:00 Although I knew that Nada Surf had remained active making music long since the 15 minutes of fame from their mid-90's hit "Popular" was up, I really hadn't given 'em much consideration at all. I'm not even really sure why. In hindsight, I probably should have paid a little more attention. That's because Nada Surf's new album Lucky (their fifth full-length) is warm, comfortable, and familiar. It is an ultra-melodic slab of un-indie rock. What I mean is that Lucky fits into that just-so category of alterna-rock that is smooth, polished and doesn't really sound "indie" but is somehow indie enough that mainstream radio/MTV isn't likely to pick up on it. A perplexing predicament for Nada Surf indeed.The contemplative power-pop of Lucky is grand but measured. It builds but isn't necessarily likely to blow your hair back. It is solid. Nada Surf just released "Lucky" and The Duke Spirit just released "Neptune". Neither is perfect, but they're still really enjoyable. 2007-08-05 07:00:00 Alternative rockers Nada Surf teamed singer/guitarist Matthew Caws and bassist Daniel Lorca, longtime school friends who played together in various bands throughout their formative years. After Lorca spent a year in Spain, he returned to New York in 1988, where he and Caws eventually formed Because Because Because; by 1993 the group had mutated into Nada Surf, issuing an indie label single which won them a contract with a European label. After recording an LP, the band's original drummer quit and was replaced by ex-Fuzztone Ira Elliot; the European deal then fell through, but a demo copy of the completed album was passed to Ric Ocasek, who agreed to produce the sessions if Nada Surf wished to re-record the material. The trio soon signed to Elektra, and with Ocasek at the helm they cut their 1996 debut LP, High/Low; some of the completed European tracks also made their way onto an EP, Karmic.
