In 1996, Nada Surf scored a hit with the part spoken word, part teenage angst anthem "Popular". They recorded a follow up album but were dropped from their major label which pushed the release of their sophomore album 2 years late to 2000. Lucky combines elegant acoustic guitars, electric rock and Matthew Caws' emotive song writing.I've always been on the fence about Nada Surf. 2008-02-05 23:37:00 It's a spectacularly uninteresting week for new music, but here are two cool new releases to hold you over until next Tuesday. Nada Surf just released "Lucky" and The Duke Spirit just released "Neptune". Neither is perfect, but they're still really enjoyable. My favorite from Nada Surf is "Beautiful Beat", the ultimate representation of the album's pure, simple, genuine pop-rock euphoria. Expect Pitchfork-style music elitists to turn their back on the whole album before even finishing the 30-second samples on iTunes, but meanwhile you can still love the hell out of this album. God knows I will.Elsewhere, The Duke Spirit is holding on to their title of "Best Psychadelic Indie Soul Band in All The World" with their latest album. Nada Surf - Why Are You So Mean To Me (1998)
2007-08-05 07:00:00 Alternative rockers Nada Surf teamed singer/guitarist Matthew Caws and bassist Daniel Lorca, longtime school friends who played together in various bands throughout their formative years. After Lorca spent a year in Spain, he returned to New York in 1988, where he and Caws eventually formed Because Because Because; by 1993 the group had mutated into Nada Surf, issuing an indie label single which won them a contract with a European label. After recording an LP, the band's original drummer quit and was replaced by ex-Fuzztone Ira Elliot; the European deal then fell through, but a demo copy of the completed album was passed to Ric Ocasek, who agreed to produce the sessions if Nada Surf wished to re-record the material. The trio soon signed to Elektra, and with Ocasek at the helm they cut their 1996 debut LP, High/Low; some of the completed European tracks also made their way onto an EP, Karmic.
