Nagoya Auto Trend 2009
2009-03-09 12:01:00 Nagoya Auto Trend 2009Once again the annual Auto Trend show was held over March 6th,7th and 8th at the Port Messe Centre near Nagoya Port.Below you can see a Datsun sportscar that featured in the Datsun Sports Car Club of Japan stand. Two of the many girls that attracted the camera toting hordes. Not sure which company or products they were promoting. There were numerous companies that had displays of their products including mirror finish mufflers,tv and dvd kits for your car, stereo systems and custom built kits. There were also companies showing off their paint and lacquer finishes. Not only four wheeled vehicles were on display. There were three wheel motor trikes and custom built scooters and motorcycles like the one below with its own customised paint job. Some more models posing beside some upmarket foreign cars that had been given a sporty look with carbon protectors and over fenders. It seems theres a coorelation between the size and type of cameras and the amount of attention one ...

Friday Flash..Nagoya Station Christmas Lights 2008
2008-12-12 14:32:00 Once again the Christmas Illuminations are burning brightly around Nagoya Station. This first shot shows the big display above the main entrance. This shot shows in more detail the Christmas town scene that is illuminated. It gradually builds up with more and more lights and buildings lit up and slowly fades away.At its height the scene includes small figures with Father Christmas and his sleigh appearing in a star filled sky.The whole cycle seems to last a couple of minutes at most and drew many "uhs" and "ahs" from the warmly clad crowds below. Just as many people seemed to be visiting the well lit area to the left of the station. As with last years display its a kind of illuminated garden with lit up teddy bear figures featuring prominently. There were other smaller lit animals and creatures including this butterfly. This final shot shows people walking around the garden and through a greenish-yellow archway. If you look closely you can probably pick out at least two or three illuminat...

Nagoya Autumn Festival
2008-10-13 13:27:00 The Nagoya Festival held last weekend October 11th and 12th is the largest autumn festival in the area. The biggest attraction is a parade led by the big three local heroes Nobunga Oda,Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Ieyasu Tokugawa along with their courtiers all dressed in period clothing.Various floats, marching teams and other groups also take part in the parades which take place round Sakae and central Nagoya. In my neighbourhood of Osu Kannon there are also various events and performers who appear over the two days.Jugglers, comic duos, dancers and musical groups are scheduled to perform throughout the day and into the early evening. One of the more crowd pleasing, eye catching attractions was a group of gold painted dancers.Covered from head to toe in shiny gold paint and wearing skimpy bikinis, both the male and female members of the group were mobbed by people trying to get a photo of them.It was the first time I'd tried using my new camera at night so the results arent that good. The light ...

Toothless in Nagoya
2008-09-22 12:40:00 There was a loud rendering crunch.I started eating lead.Blood.The apple flavoured stick of KissMint I was masticating had prised off one of my fillings.I spat the dull gray metal onto my desk.Borrowing my co-workers pink Hello Kitty makeup mirror I gingerly inspected the damage.A small cavity.No.More like an abyss or a chasm. Not good. What to do.Saturday.I could trek out to one of the three places in Nagoya that offered dental services over the weekend.Or bide my time and wait two days and find a local dentist. As the pain was bearable due to the numbing effects of alcohol I decided to delay my visit to the dentist a little longer.I mean..not having been to a dentist for five years what harm could another two days do.Luckily a friend gave me the name of an English speaking dentist so with some apprehension I went along this Monday morning. For those familiar with Nagoya,Kimura Dental Clinic is almost opposite the entrance to the FreeBell Building.Freebell seems to house an inordinate n...

Midland Square Building Nagoya
2008-08-18 01:58:00 Currently the tallest building in Central Japan, the Midland Square building was completed in autumn 2006.The building stands at 247m and has 47 floors. There is a three floor observation deck, the Sky Promenade, which costs 700 yen for adults to enter. As you can see from the photo theres a sloping walking platform and the viewing gallery is open to the sky and elements. As well as containing Toyota`s sales staff and thirty odd other company offices the building has a plethora of designer stores, cafes and restaurants and a seven screen multiplex cinema. Built across from the Nagoya Station Central Towers, the Midland Square Building provides great panoramic views of the cityscape. One of its nearest neighbours is the Mode Gakuen Spiral Towers. It opened in April 2008 after construction began in 2005.The spiral skyscraper is 36 floors and 170m tall.It houses restaurants, shops and three vocational schools. On the other side of the Midland Square building is the Lucent Tower,a curved sweeping g...

Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament RoundUp 2008
2008-07-28 14:17:00 The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament ended yesterday.Hakuho had wrapped up the Emperors Cup on day 13 so the only real interest was whether he could end with a 15 win 0 loss record.Which he did by beating Kotooshu in the last bout of the final day.Kotooshu who won the last basho and had earlier hopes of promotion to the rank of yokozuna ended up with a 9-6 record.Baruto finished 10-5 and ozeki Kaio with a 9-6 win loss record. An eel and rice bento available in many shops at this time of year.Eel is seen as giving people stamina and energy in the hot, humid days of summer.Today with the temperature again in the mid 30s Nagoya had thunder and lightning throughout the day.Intermittent showers meant that carrying an umbrella was necessary.

Friday Flash..More from the Nagoya Sumo Tournament
2008-07-17 19:35:00 A couple of shots from the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament I attended earlier in the week.Below is a photo of yokozuna Asashoryu performing the traditional dohyo-iri or "entering the ring" ceremony.Accompanied by two lower ranked wrestlers and a judge, the yokozuna goes through an elaborate ceremony. After clapping his hands to get the attention of the gods he extends his hands to his sides and turns his palms upward to show he isnt hiding any weapons. He next rises one leg in the air then the other. Finally he stomps each leg down onto the the surface of the ring or dohyo symbolically driving evil away. After he has finished and his attendants have left the other yokozuna Hakuho repeated the ceremony. The second shot shows some of the merchandise and souvenirs available from the stalls outside the gym.Various towels, cloths and handkerchiefs were available.A multitude of Hello Kitty goods was also on sale.Pens, cookies and cloths bearing Hello Kitty figures in sumo garb were displayed in each...

Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament July 2008
2008-07-14 06:32:00 I dragged myself up early and along to the second day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. There was a line of people already waiting when I arrived at the ticket office. After standing in an orderly fashion for 10 minutes in the rapidly rising heat I purchased my ticket. And escaped into the air conditioned chasm of the Nagoya Prefectural Gym.In time to see the first bout of the day at 8:35pm.There were two shock results from the opening day.First Kotooshu, the ozeki from Bulgaria, who won the last tournament and is looking for another Emperors Cup to gain promotion to yokozuna, lost. Not surprisng really considering that his opponent was Aminishiki. His record against him now stands at 0-6 including one loss by default. The other surprise was Asashoryu's loss to Toyonoshima.Asa's record against him was 5-0 until yesterdays bout when Toyonoshima narrowly avoided touching the dirt before Asashoryu. The photo above shows a bowl of chanko nabe. Its a key dish in the diet of a sumo wrestler. It ...

Nagoya Tram and Subway Museum
2008-06-16 04:13:00 I visited the Nagoya Tram and Subway Museum earlier in the week. Its near Akaike subway station on the Tsuramai Line.Theres a wall map at the station. The museum is basically a block behind the station.Turn right as you leave Exit 2.Walk straight down the hill.At the end of the street turn right and head towards the traffic lights and Route 153.At the intersection cross the road and turn right. You should be heading up the hill on Route 153.Theres a big sign indicating the museum over the traffic lanes. There are four old tram and subway cars on display in the Museum. In the middle of the display hall there are a number of computer and interactive displays which proved popular with the noisy throngs of kids present.Another drawcard was the large model railway based loosely on Nagoya. There were model buildings of JR Central Towers and Nagoya TV Tower around which model shinkansen trains circled endlessly. With their noses and fingers pressed firmly against the display glass an employee wa...

2008-06-07 05:04:00 ClubDEEP Nagoya will be held in ZEPP Nagoya. They have added a tag-team grappling fight to this card, participating will be Hidehiko Hasegawa. Also in this event there are a mix of rules including MMA, grappling and Kick rule.I was confused by what seems to be the main event... Less than 3 months ago, Ryan Bow and Naoki Matsushita fought a draw in ClubDEEP Tokyo, now they get a re-match.It will be interesting to see if Kunihiro Watanabe can continue to finish his opponent inside the first minute, but in this one he might be considered the underdog against the more experienced Umemura, who also likes to finish his fights early.MMA:Naoki Matsushita 9-9-9 vs. 16-8-0 Ryan BowTakashi Matsushita 2-5-1 vs. 0-4-1 Hideo MatsuiHiroshi Umemura 10-7-3 vs. 4-2-0 Kunihiro Watanabe Atsuhiro Tsuboi 5-10-2 vs. 1-3-0 Henrik "Wolverine" Kakiuchi Seiji Akao 3-1-0 vs. 0-2-0 Tatsumitsu WadaTadao Kimura vs. 4-2-0 Yoshiyume ChodoGrappling Tag-team: Hidehiko Hasegawa/Taishi vs. Christian/KodaKick-rule:?? Abandoned Car Taken Away
2008-05-29 06:27:00 ??????Finally...it's gone. This Monday a car abandoned across the small stream from my house has at last been taken away. Loaded on to a truck by crane and driven away fully five months after it was abandoned and ticketed on November 19th, 2007.The stream, by the way, marks the boundary between Nagoya city and Nisshin and it seems Nagoya city authorities move a little quicker on dumped vehicles than their Nisshin counterparts. A car abandoned on the Nagoya side just up the road was taken away after just a few days. It was first dumped on the main road to Toyota, almost completely blocking a T-junction, was then moved to a less dangerous position on a side road and then disappeared, presumably at the hands of Nagoya city authorities. The licence plate was for a city near Tokyo. At last the rusting, oil-spewing hulk over in Nisshin no longer presents a traffic, ecological or aesthetic threat to the neighborhood. Good bloody riddence! If only the old codger, who insists of driving here ...

2008-05-26 06:03:00 Indonesian flag carrier Garuda will reopen a route linking the resort island of Bali with the Japanese city of Nagoya next month, a spokesman for the airline said Monday. The route will be served three times a week using a 293-seater Airbus 330-300 starting on June 2, Pujobroto told AFP. The flights would be on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flight to Japan's fourth-largest city from Bali's capital city of Denpasar had been closed down by Garuda in mid-January 2007.New market research showing strong demand for the route convinced the company to reopen the flight, Pujobroto said.Garuda currently flies a daily Tokyo-Jakarta-Denpasar route and five weekly flights from Osaka to Denpasar.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry & Technology
2008-05-14 04:49:00 ???????After visiting the Toyota Automobile Museum earlier this year, I was inspired to visit Toyota's other showpiece museum in Nagoya, the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry & Technology, not far from Nagoya Station.I was not disappointed; the museum is superb. The museum is housed in the original red brick buildings of the Toyoda (the forerunner of present-day Toyota Corp) textile factory and research center. The museum is divided in to two parts in separate buildings. The first building exhibits early automatic looms and outlines the history of spinning cloth. Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of the Toyota empire developed a wooden hand loom in 1890 and went on to patent an automatic loom based on a British model in 1924, which guaranteed the financial success of his enterprise. The second building is all about car production. Toyoda's son, Kiichiro, developed the model AA passenger car - Toyota's first mass-produced automobile introduced in 1936. Various production line un...

The World Of Monet..Nagoya Boston Museum
2008-05-05 04:08:00 Currently showing at the Nagoya Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Nagoya is an exhibition entitled The World of Claude Monet. There are 25 Monet works on show as well as paintings by some of his contemporaries such as Degas,Renoir and Manet. There is only one of his waterlily paintings on display. Its the last item on the guide and takes centre stage in the final room of paintings. For me,however, the real highlights came earlier.Monet seemed to have a thing about haystacks and painted numerous ones at different times of the day.The example included in this exhibition appeared to light up and illuminate the whole area.Examining the canvas closely,(I could virtually touch the paintings glass with my nosetip as there is a welcome absence of barriers or ropes),it appears to a series of haphazard, indiscriminate daubs and brushstrokes of paint. It is only stepping back from the wall that the whole thing coalesces and you can see the graduations and transition of light which Monet and the other Imp...

Nagoya lead the way as the J. League goes Golden
2008-04-25 04:12:00 Nagoya Grampus lead the J. League standings by three points ahead of the traditional Golden Week rush. The Toyota-backed outfit are playing fast-paced, attacking football under new coach Dragan Stojkovic, however Nagoya fans are quick to point out that they were also leading the league at the same stage last season, only to limp home to an eventual eleventh placed finish.Nevertheless Nagoya's confidence will be sky-high ahead of their visit to Ajinomoto Stadium where they take on the hapless Tokyo Verdy, who followed up a 5-0 thrashing by Shimizu S-Pulse in the League Cup with a similarly embarrassing 5-1 defeat by an injury-hit Kashiwa Reysol last weekend.Shimizu S-Pulse take on FC Tokyo at Nihondaira Stadium, with these two sides having already met in the League Cup at the same venue this season. Shimizu won that game 3-1, and with the Shizuoka outfit hovering just above the relegation zone, they'll hope for a repeat scoreline in front of their passionate supporters.Northern sid...

Shimizu S-Pulse v Nagoya Grampus
2008-04-13 06:36:00 The best thing on display in a Shimizu S-Pulse shirt yesterday at pretty Nihondaira Stadium was the pre-match entertainment dancers.Listen to the sounds of the Shimizu fansOn the pitch, Shimizu were poor again and lost 2-0 to an improving Nagoya Grampus. The loss of ace marksman Korean Cho Jae-jin seems to be key to the Shizuoka Prefecture club's poor form this season. The tall Cho Jae-jin, who has returned to the K.League with Jeonbuk Motors after a move to the English Premier League fell through, has been replaced with a 1.65 meter Brazilian, Marcos Aurelio, plucked from his country's third division in a piece of ill-advised transfer activity by a literally short-sighted board.Over 14,000 supportive fans saw the match but crowds are slipping as the team continues to slide in to the bottom three of the J-League.Bet with Bet 365World Soccer NewsSoccer betting tipsSoccer Books & DVDsTagsSoccer News soccer football J-League S-Pulse Shimizu

Trainspotting in Japan
2008-04-11 02:31:00 ?????1000?????????With scores of different engine types employed by numerous private railway companies, Japan is a trainspotter's dreamland.Every weekend thousands of mostly young to middle aged men gather at stations across the nation photographing and videoing their speeding steel idols.I rode with a group of spotters in the front seats of a train recently and was amused to see them flashing the V peace sign with their fingers as we roared through stations to be caught on film by their rival geeks shooting away on the platforms. Every station on the trip had someone taking photographs or video. Here is a video homage on YouTube to Meitetsu's Panorama Super shot mainly at Nagoya, Kanayama, Jingu-mae and Arimatsu stations. A's, Red Sox get MLB show on the road
2008-03-28 10:05:00 Major League Baseball created a lot of buzz in Japan when it opened its 2008 season in Tokyo with two games between the World Series champion Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics on March 25 and 26.The teams split the series, Boston winning a dramatic encounter on opening day 6-5 in 10 innings and the A?s holding on to win Game 2 by a score of 5-1. Both games were played at Tokyo Dome.Former Seibu Lion right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka became just the second Japanese native to start a season opener following Hideo Nomo, who did it three times, once for the Detroit Tigers in 2000 and twice for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2003-2004).Matsuzaka was also making his first appearance in Japan since joining Boston for 51 million dollars at the end of the 2006 season. Dice-K, as he is known stateside, went 15-12 with a 4.40 ERA in his rookie MLB season and topped that off with a World Series ring.Matsuzaka?s homecoming was a bit of a letdown, however, as he struggled with his control early on ...
Yokkaichi
2008-03-25 18:54:00 ???Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture on the Kintetsu and JR Lines west of Nagoya Station is definitely off the beaten track.Best known as an oil-refining city, you can smell the petrol from Yokkiachi's refineries if the prevailing breeze is blowing inshore. Thankfully on the day we visited it wasn't. Yokkaichi means "four days market" and was a thriving international port in the late 19th century. During the 1960s the chemical industries in town gave rise to Yokkaichi zensoku - a kind of asthma caused by the sulphur emissions from the town's many chemical plants.Congested during the week, Yokkaichi is pleasantly relaxed on Saturdays and Sundays. I could not find a tourist office at either the Kintetsu or JR station, separated by about 700m on the town's grand boulevard, so I gave up sightseeing and just walked the town.Unless you draw the short straw and are posted here as a JET assistant high school teacher or lecture at the respected but failing Yokkaichi University, there is little...

Linimo
2008-03-11 05:51:00 ???Built for Aichi Expo 2005, Nagoya's Linimo service is a Maglev (magnetic-levitated) train and claims to be the first such urban Maglev service. The Linimo runs on an elevated track via nine stations on the approximately 9km-long Tobu Kyuryo Line from Fujigaoka Station on the Higashiyama Subway Line to the terminus at Yakusa Station, which has connections to the Aichi Loop Line. The smooth-running, driver-less trains are not built for speed, unlike the new Maglev service in Shanghai, reaching just 100kph. The service also has to be shut down during strong winds. The Linimo serves the eastern suburbs of Nagoya, Nagakute, and is convenient for visiting the Toyota Automobile Museum near Geidai Dori Station and the Ai Chikyu Haku Kinen Koen (the former site of Aichi Expo 2005 and now returned to a park). The Linimo is not cheap and a ride from Fujigaoka to Yakusa costs 360 yen. A one-day Linimo pass is 800 yen for adults. The first train from Fujigaoka towards Yakusa departs at 5.50am wi...
Nagoya Auto Trend 2008
2008-03-10 12:39:00 Having had my fill of culture recently,I decided to join the throngs and head off to see the annual car show.It was the first time I'd used the Aonami train as well as visit both the car show and the Port Messe Nagoya complex. The Aonami line begins at Nagoya Station and ends some 25 minutes and 350 yen later on the industrial commercial side of the Port.Port Messe is a sprawling complex of exhibition halls and conference venues. The Nagoya Auto Trend show ran for three days and displays spread over three huge halls. As well as the major local Japanese car manufacturers being present a number of luxury foreign car makers also had displays such as BMW,Audi and Mercedes Benz. There were a number of F1 racing cars on display including this vehicle. Its the first time Ive tried to take photos at a car show and I encountered a number of problems. The first problem was the different light levels round each display.Spotlights and coloured lights, flashing indicator lights and glare from all the...

Toyota Automobile Museum
2008-03-08 05:52:00 ??????Nagoya has two outstanding museums - the Tokugawa Art Museum and the Toyota Automobile Museum. The first displays the riches of the Tokugawa shogunate and its founder, local boy, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Toyota Automobile Museum showcases the area's new wealth and prestige based on the huge production of cars by local manufacturer Toyota Corp.Drunken salarymen will tell you the success of Toyota is based on the same "Mikawa spirit" that produced the long rule of the Tokugawa. Be that as it may, if you have time, visit the Toyota Automobile Museum - its a superb tribute to the automobile and surely one of the best museums of its type in the world.Situated in Nagakute, to the east of central Nagoya, the Toyota Automobile Museum has exhibits of European and American cars on its second floor and Japanese cars on the third floor. The displays are carefully themed with sections dedicated to historic automobiles, luxury cars and mass production models. The Japanese section has high perf...
Naughty Nagoya shop offers oral hors d'ouvres before serving the main cours
2008-03-04 17:57:00 Get out your notepads, guys, because this item from Asahi Geino (2/28) warrants a short Japanese language lesson.First word: "Fera."The Japanese abbreviation for fellatio (oral sex performed on a male).Second word: "Shimei."Literally, "to point to a name." When used in the pink trade, it refers to requesting a specific female attendant by name.Third word: "Fuzoku."Literally "ways of the world." In the generic sense, any type of pink business.Put 'em all together, and you've got a sex shop where customers get to choose who serves them oral sex.Although the recent crackdowns on pink businesses has taken much of the wind from Tokyo's sails, it seems that down Nagoya way, the sex shops -- in the form of "fashion health" massage parlors, pink salons and new "deai cafes" with cute young waitresses on their menu -- are booming as never before.Via

Peruvian Music At Kanayama Station
2008-03-04 04:28:00 ?????Listen to the music of Peruvian buskersAichi Prefecture along with nearby Shizuoka Prefecture has the largest numbers of South American residents in Japan. Many of them live in small satellite towns surrounding Nagoya, working in the automotive industry, toiling long hours at low pay to produce parts for such giants as Toyota and Mitsubishi.Sunday is usually the only day off during the week for these workers to relax and persue their interests. Occasionally it is possible to see a couple of Peruvian guys performing a duo of guitar and nosepipe outside the gents' toilet at the main entrance to Kanayama Station. Busking is illegal in public places in Japan and the police turn a blind eye depending on how they feel. Yakuza gangsters may also drop by to take a share of street performers' meagre takings.Copies of the guys' CD are on sale if you ever catch them live.Yahoo Japan Auction ServiceBook a hotel in Japan with BookingsTokyo Serviced ApartmentsBudget accommodation in Japan...
