The Dog Saint of Nagpur
2009-05-02 18:17:00 Nagpur is still a city of small bylanes and rustic bunglows. I had taken a stroll around Dharam peth area and came upon this statue in one of the bylanes. I an not sure who/what this is supposed to represent, but going by the vermellion marks on the image, evidently it is held in great affection or esteem. There is ofcourse precedence for dog saints as this website explains, so I don't see why we in Nagpur can't have one for ourselves.View Larger Map
Giripeth Post office - Nagpur
2009-05-02 11:45:00 Below post also included in my Philatelic blog..As I have put up in the title bar, I have a weakness of taking my pictures with post offices or post boxes. I got an opportunity to do it yesterday and I wasn't going to pass up on it. The Giripeth post office in Nagpur has a very rustic look to it, like it might have existed in this state for more then 50 years. And it really might have had. My wife is form the locality and she claims to have seen the post office in the same state since memory serves her. That would put the age of the post office anywhere from five years to twentyfive - depending on who is telling my wifes age!The Post box outside actually looks like it had fallen in one of the stronger monsoon winds and is now firmly propped up in place with a cement base. But nothing much seems to be holding up the building, with its beautiful tiled roof and wooden latticed front. It is really hot in Nagpur, with temperatures reaching up to 47 Deg C yesterday. But because of the c...

2009-03-25 14:22:00 Thanks for the wishes on the last post. Now that I am posting from my phone, hopefully the posting will be more regular. But the downside is that most likely, my blog will involve non - ship related subjects, and the posts will also be shorter. Was out at the gokulpeth market in Nagpur and snapped this rickshaw driver in thought as he waited for his next ride in the dusk.
Shahid Kabir - the unsung poet from Nagpur
2008-05-05 11:52:00 Today, I received a message on the blog from a gentleman called Sameer Kabir - who talked about Shahid Kabir. A poet from Nagpur - whose ghazals have been sung by leading singers from across the subcontinent - including names like Jagjit and Chitra Singh, Lata Mangeshkar, Chandan das, Hariharan, Ghulam Farid Sabri, Aziz Nazan, Salman Alvi, Rais Khan, Munni Begum, Udit Narayan and Pankaj Udaas to name a few. Sadly, though I have heard his famous ghazals - Uski gali me phir muhey ek baar le chalo and thukraao ab ki pyaar karo - I had no idea that the writer was from Nagpur. Shahid Kabir was born on 1st May, 1932 in Nagpur in India. His contribution to the world of Urdu poetry took many forms. In 1957 he was the screenwriter for the drama “MIRZA GHALIB” presented in the Fine Arts Drama Competition at Rastrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. He was an active writer since 1952, writing articles, short stories and ghazals for most leading periodicals of India. He gained recognition as a ...

Talent crunch forces BPOs to Tier II cities
2008-04-16 20:05:00 NEW DELHI: The surge in real estate prices and a talent crunch in metros are forcing the $11 billion Indian BPO industry to move to Tier II cities in the country, according to a study conducted by consultancy firm Everest Group."It is difficult to sustain the growth in Tier I cities because of the rising real estate prices and talent crunch. There is no option but to move to Tier II cities," Everest Group's Country Head (India) Gaurav Gupta said.As of now, BPO industry is concentrated in seven cities namely Bangalore, NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata."Movement to lower-cost cities within India is likely to result in additional 15-30 per cent reduction in operating cost despite lower employability and higher management costs," Head of Global Services at Everest Research Institute, Nikhil Rajpal, said.Everest Group is a global consulting firm specialising in sourcing and offshoring advisory services. The study ranks several Tier II and Tier III cities on their potent...
India?s realty industry scrapes the sky
2008-04-01 05:56:00 A decade ago, Noida was little more than a scrubland just outside India?s national capital, New Delhi. Today, it is a booming township with unending concrete structures and is home to several multinationals. This metamorphosis of Noida in many ways symbolises India?s booming realty industry, estimated at $15 billion, and growing at a whopping 35 percent annually. ?The real estate scene in India has undergone a sea change in the past four years,? said Venugopal N. Dhoot, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), one of India?s three leading industry lobbies. ?Growing economy, greater integration with the global economy and increasing domestic and foreign investment are creating demand for residential, official and retail space to propelling the realty industry?s growth,? Dhoot told IANS. That is apparent from the number of high-rise buildings dotting the skylines of Indian cities with more than a thousand developers busy with construction works across...

Nagpur?s restaurants: Yummy and the yuck.
2008-02-09 13:01:00 I must admit I am not much into dining out. Because I am more the daal-roti-subzee kinds. The Nagpur Railway Station - 1930s
2008-02-06 07:08:00 Here is a rare pic I found of the Nagpur Railway station platform, back in the 1930s. It was probably part of the Great Indian Peninsular Railways then. The architecture is pretty similar to stations in Britian at that time. Things have of course changed quite a bit over the years. But the station platforms ...

IT Companies Trickle to Tier III Cities
2007-12-13 13:25:00 In view of the appreciating rupee, high wages and increasing real estate prices, big, medium and small IT firms have made a successful entry into tier-II cities. Encouraged by their progress, many small IT firms are now exploring tier-III cities such as Udupi, Manipal, Hubli and Belgaum in Karnataka, Kozhikode in Kerala, Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, Jaipur in Rajasthan, and Durgapur and Kharagpur in West Bengal. The reasons are manifold. These cities have a good number of engineering colleges, and the firms do not find it difficult to meet their modest requirements of staffing, usually in the low hundreds, at affordable costs and without being plagued by high attrition. Smaller IT companies cannot compete with large brands in software services across domains. They have to specialise in niche areas and require a smaller workforce. It is easier for them to recruit in smaller towns where the big players are not competing. Consequently, they can bring down their operating costs, als...

Five of these hours had to be solo.L-R : Dad, Capt Kanga, V.P.RoyThe imposing trainer was Capt Kanga. I wonder how he could have fit in most of the cockpits of that time.
