The Namesake Review: Time is Our Destiny
2008-06-12 16:12:00 The characters in the Indian film, The Namesake (2006), unfold in front of us as life unfolds. A young Bengali woman finds herself on a journey to New York City in 1979 when her family arranges for her marriage. Her husband, an Indian PhD student studying in New York, is unknown to her, a stranger, but he is kind and together they develop a warm, supportive marriage. Ashima, meaning no boundaries or without limits, seems to play a relatively passive role as she raises her children, their personalities overcoming her own like waves, but she never bows to their own strength. Instead, she bends with it like grass along a river or a reed in the wind. The film explores the theme common seen in Indian films released in America, the struggle between Indian tradition and American values, old and new, adjustment and preservation but there was more to this storyline by famous female author, Jhumpa Lahiri, than cultural adjustments. The movie was about the inevitable passage of time. Ashima was...

2008-05-08 07:08:00 Another wonderful movie based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri directed and produced by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding (2001), Vanity Fair (2004)) starring Irfan Khan and Kal Penn. The plot: In the late 60s-early 70s Ashoke Ganguli (Irfan Khan) was traveling on the train to his grandfather in Calcutta and reading a book by Nicholai Gogol. ...

Does Apple Have the Balls to Sue Its Korean Namesake? [IPoop]
2008-04-06 15:45:00 Poor the Apple. No sooner has the Cupertino conquistador de computadoras taken steps to protect its trademark against GreeNYC than another eponymous company pops up. This one's in Korea and it sells toilets and bidets which do all those flash things so beloved of Asian poopers. Did I really just write that? Oh dear, yes I did. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Jobs' riposte. Will he bring out something for the bathroom that includes shower function, heat seat, self cleaning and user memory? If I were him, I'd just send in the lawyers. [AppleZen via i4u]

Feeling of Alienation in 'The Namesake'
2007-08-03 06:33:00 Jhumpa Lahiri's 'The Namesake' is a story of Indian immigrants in the United States the effect the immigration has on their offsprings. There is a feeling of alienation, a feeling of being lonely in the crowd all through the novel. Only once does Ashima Ganguli, Gogol mother, feel attached to America because of the memories of her husband after his death. She doesn't want that the house should be altered after it is sold to someone else. Her husband had made his living in this country. The situation of Gogol is no better. He is a child who is born to Indian parents but is brought up in America. He is neither able to become an American at heart nor remains an Indian. He does not fully belong to anywhere. He is a 'nowhere man'.He tries to break away from the Indian traditions followed by his family. Once he had resented the trips made of Calcutta but finally he comes to wonder 'how his parents had done it ...All those trips...how could they have been enough?' This was the real...

Child Psychology in 'The Namesake'
2007-08-01 06:00:00 Jhumpa Lahiri, the celebrated author of 'The Interpretor of Maladies'(a collection of short stories) also penned down the Pulitzer Prize winner 'The Namesake'. The theme of cultural alienation dominates the whole novel. But what I am going to discuss here is the psychological insights provided into the working of a child's mind by the author. When Gogol, the main character of the novel, is young he responds only to that name. Even in school he refuses to accept 'Nikhil' as his school name. He doesn't respond when he's called Nikhil. It is but natural for a child to do so. Nikhil is not known to him. He only knows Gogol. But he grows conscious about his name later on till a time comes when he finally declares he hates the name 'Gogol' and formally changes it to 'Nikhil'. But for the whole of his life he is unable to detach himself from his former name. The name 'Gogol' keeps propping up at different times.Again after his father's death he feels guilty about the change ...

Brilliant Tabu in Mira Nair's "The Namesake"
2007-05-15 05:44:00 Tabu (born Tabassum Hashmi in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India) is an award-winning Indian actress who has acted in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and English films. She has won the coveted National Film Award for Best Actress twice. She is best known for her critically acclaimed acting in many films rather than achieving box office success. She is considered as one of the finest and most versatile actresses in India. When an internationally acclaimed filmmaker like Mira Nair comes up with a film that is adapted from a book by Pulitzer winning author, it is time to sit up and take notice. ?The Namesake?, which is based on the book of the same title by Jhumpa Lahiri, is a movie rich in emotions. It is a film about cross-cultural identity crisis. The element of realism has been very strong in all of Nair?s films. ?The Namesake?, too, is very realistic and credible, not just in its look but also in the way the story has been treated and presented by Mira Nair. Not once are the emotions overblown...

The Namesake Captured!
2007-04-29 10:17:00 The essence of a novel taken to big screen lies in the way the originality of the book is preserved. It is highly important that the core values of the characters etched in the book is translated to perfectly similar characters on the big screen. It is not entirely impossible, but only very few film makers can pull off such a thing with absolute conviction. Mira Nair had a very tough job on her hands to maintain the standards of the brilliant book by Jhumpa Lahiri. At the end of the day, I now can understand why the entire crew was so confident of the movie.I had the opportunity to view the movie at Seattle. I generally do not expect much from movies based on adaptations from literature because it is no easy task to realise the originality of the script. This was no different though all the reviews were positive. The movie started off in a brilliant Calcutta setting, reeling off titles in English embedded in Bengali script. The start itself gave me a feeling of an unknown au...

My Review Of The Namesake
2007-04-10 11:39:00 I finally caught the Namesake with my mother and seldom does a movie invoke so many emotions. With the Namesake I have a new found respect for Tabu and Irrfan Khan who have immortalized the characters Ashok and Ashima Ganguli and the very thought of Rani or Abhishek playing them (as decided earlier) is enough to make me break into hives! The Namesake is cinematic journey, which begins in chaotic Calcutta and moves on to the States where everything is so structured!! The newly married Ashima may be excited to begin her married journey with Ashok however she is not enthralled by the wonders of US! In one of the scene she writes a letter to her mum and talks about getting water, gas 24/7 but you can still see the longing on her face when she mentions India! To her people make a country not just comforts. However as long as she has Ashok on her side she has no complaints and settles into martial bliss. The Gangulis real challenge start when their kids grow up and as expected cultural...

Namesake: Book Vs Film!
2007-04-05 21:32:00 My idea was to write a review of Namesake but frankly it?s too late. So many people have already praised it so highly or dismissed it so badly that the reviews have gotten me thinking more than the film itself. Principal objection to the film is that it?s not as good as the book. Well, I?m not very sure how to compare a book and a film? Agreed, the film definitely derives it?s storyline from the book but my point is what stops the filmmaker from reinterpreting it? I think once a film is made... Review of film 'The Namesake'
2007-03-24 21:10:00 A BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY CALLED ‘THE NAMESAKE’Books and movies though both aspects of entertainment and literature, but when one adapted to another creates a hugely bizarre results. So, being a true movie buff and avid book lover it really scares my wits off to see a movie based on book. Will it do justice to book or am I going to be disappointed or is it going to offend book. Just few weeks before I finished writing my review of Jhumpa Lahiri’s ‘The Namesake’. Spindling stupendous words and exotic grammar that dwindled me to the book was about to go under camera lens. Though the face behind camera was a known and well though in expert hands one still can never be too sure. Following were revelations of first day first show of Fox light‘s latest production. The book which I have read and reviewed was picturised in front of me with Ashok Ganguli (Irfan Khan) in 1970s something traveling in a train where a co-passenger and a train incident help him decide to migrate in new count...
The Namesake: REVIEW
2007-03-24 14:57:00 The Namesake By CricketguruStarring Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Kal Penn, Jacinda BarrettDirected by Mira NairRating: ****Sometimes an absence is also a kind of presence. Take The Namesake. Irrfan Khan as Prof Ashoke Ganguly suddenly dies on his wife, leaving what looks like stretches of aching silences in the bereft Ashima's life. And yet, look at life's ironies.the death of the patriarch in this malfunctional Bengali family in New York triggers off a stretch of mending and nurturing that culminates in a kind of healing that signifies a beginning born out of an end.Mira Nair's new film is so tender at heart you often forget these are actors enacting scenes from a well-known Pultizer-prize winning novel. The actors lose their plumes so completely, we don't even get the chance to be astonished by the subtle craft that underlines almost every moment in this mellow migratory drama. The cross-generational conflict between a first-generation Bengali family in the US and their cult...

Namesake's Kal Penn Unplugged!
2007-03-14 10:22:00 Here is a recent interview of American Indian Kal Penn who plays the protagonists in Mira Nair's Namesake. ComingSoon.net: When I talked to Mira, she mentioned that you were a big fan ofKal Penn: Yes, I was a huge fan of her stuff. I saw one of her films, "Mississippi Masala" in 7th or 8th grade, and that kind of motivated me to be an actor. I loved the film, and she was a role model of mine ever since then. I was following her career and how she got into it and all that stuff.CS: How did you find out about the project? Had you read the book and knew she was adapting it?Penn: No, I read the book. John Cho, who plays Harold in "Harold & Kumar," recommended the book, and we were both big fans of Jhumpa's first book. John kind of ridiculed me for not having heard about "The Namesake," because somehow I missed its release entirely. So he insisted I go out and buy it, so I bought it and read it almost in one sitting, and bawled my eyes out. It wa...

Mira Nair's Namesake Review
2007-03-09 16:31:00 Rediff reviews Mira Nair's The Namesake and here is what they say:When a book is made into a film, especially one that is penned by a Pulitzer-Prize winning author, there's more scope for potential disaster. Will the characters, locations, plots and sub-plots pan out as effectively on celluloid as they do in the reader's imagination? Mira Nair's The Namesake, adapted from Jhumpa Lahiri's book by the same name (she won the Pullitzer Prize in 2000 for Interpreter of Maladies), does not disappoint. In fact, it surpasses one's expectations. The story begins in 1971 Kolkata, a time when foreign products dazzled us and visits by expatriate relatives were pretty much the event of the year. A young Bengali settled in the US, Ashoke Ganguli (Irrfan) marries a local girl Ashima (Tabu) and they migrate to the US. Some years down the line, Ashima gives birth to a son (Kal Penn). The basic premise of the film is this: How will this child survive in American society with a ...

Mira Nair's Namesake Premieres In New York
2007-03-08 16:36:00 Mira Nair's Namesake was premiered in New York on Tuesday and one saw celebrities like Donna Karan, director Sofia Coppola ,Patricia Clarkson, actors William Dafoe and Steve Buscemi in attendance."The Namesake is a piece of my heart, dil ka tukda. It's a film that just, when I read the book, possessed me like a fever and I dropped everything. Nine months later I was shooting. And I feel very pleased that at the end of the film, I love every frame, every piece of music, every sound,” said Mira. The author of The Namesake, Jhumpa Lahiri, was there with her family for the premiere. “The only thing I would change is that when I was on the set one day, is that my daughter appears quite prominently. My son was in my lap and he was asleep so he didn't quite make it into the camera. So just for my own familial harmony over the years, it would have been nice to have a little shot of my son. But I'm sure he'll understand when he gets older why he wasn't ...
