SAY NO TO NEXT NANDIGRAM
2008-03-07 14:16:00
Two important Bills pending in Parliament seek to amend the Land Acquisition (LA) Act, and to give statutory authority for the first time to the rehabilitation and resettlement (RR) policy, itself revised on the basis of experience since the first RR policy of 2004. Will these twin Bills succeed in staving off further Nandigrams by securing greater justice for farmers and other displaced persons, while expediting at the same time the land acquisition of land for development projects? The two Bills contain several far-reaching improvements. They broaden the definition of persons whose rights must be considered when land is being acquired, to include tenants, formal and informal, and to tribals with traditional rights over forest land. They require social impact assessments to be carried out according to procedures laid down in the new RR Act, which provides for consultation with the project affected families themselves, leading to the preparation of a transparent, pu...

Opinion: SEZs - The Nandigram Massacre
2008-01-04 14:23:00
One of the headlining events of the Indian political scenario this year, I'd say. Nandigram was a burning example of how policies and concepts take indefinite time in a democracy like ours to fully see the light of the day.CPI(M) cadres kidnapped, killed, raped and did what not in order to ensure that the SEZ isn't deemed, well, a SEZ. It goes to show how much the Left has at stake in West Bengal. Beware BJP. Beware Congress. They already swept the government off it's hinges regarding the nuclear deal. Something that wasn't appreciated by the nation as such. The deal's for civilian good. With inflation on the rise, an alternative source is needed sooner rather than later.Happy New Year to readers.....

Sarkar Raj Based on the Nandigram Issue
2007-11-26 09:43:00
Sarkar Raj may just redeem RGV as a director after the abomination that was RGV’s Sholay. The movie not only is a sequel to his brilliant Sarkar but also stars the Holy Bachchan Trinity. Now the rumor mill is abuzz that Sarkar Raj is based on the SEZ issue in Nandigram.Says a source:“Sarkar Raj is basically the story of a conflict between a father and son played by Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan respectively. However, the film also has an integral portion where Aishwarya Rai (who plays a businesswoman) wants to build a dam… which raises a storm just like it has done in Nandigram now.”“However Ramuji has made sure that there is no direct reference to the issue and has only used it as one of the significant parts in the film. The major part of the story is obviously based on the conflict of emotions between Amitabh and Abhishek. The film is scheduled to release early next year,” adds the source.
Nandigram: The Beating of Medha Patkar
2007-11-22 20:59:00
by Satya Sagar On 8 November when a mob of Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporters in West Bengal beat Medha Patkar, after dragging her out from a convoy headed to the troubled area of Nandigram, they bestowed a rare honour upon this brave woman. In that instant, she achieved the distinction of becoming India’s only well known social activist to be physically assaulted by thugs from both the right and left wing of the mainstream Indian political spectrum. In April 2002 Medha, had been similarly attacked by the cadre of the Hindu fundamentalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ahmedabad while on a peace mission to the city, after the infamous pogrom carried out by Hindu fundamentalists killing over 2500 Muslim men, women and children . Medha was a target of the right wing for long because of her opposition to the Narmada dam project, that has displaced thousands of tribal families. The CPM men who hit Medha and her fellow activists in turn were angry with her attempt t...

Kolkata violence: Irresponsible Jamiat playing with fire
2007-11-22 14:17:00
Kolkata was in flames on Wednesday. Mercifully the violence didn’t spill out of control. As TV channels started flashing the ‘alert’ about Army called in Kolkata and later the images of All India Muslim Forum activists, I really got worried. If it was a protest over just Nandigam, I could understand. But the way Jamiat brought ...
