Lawmakers in New Jersey has decided that if you are going to eat fast food, you are going to pay more for it. They are suggesting a tax on fast food to help struggling hospitals. Yeah, you read that right: The thought of taxing a Big Mac or a Wendy’s burger came up at a New Jersey Hospital Association meeting where Gov. Jon S. Corzine was asked if it could be an option to help fund struggling hospitals. At the meeting, he reportedly called it a “constructive suggestion.” This is the typical government reaction to a problem. I wonder how many of these lawmakers considered organizing a fund-raiser or charity auction for the hospital problem. My instinct tells me that “charity” is a foreign concept to these folks. I'm working shifts at the moment so time is a bit limited for blogging. However I was pleased to read this report on the failed attempt to ban junk food adverts. I've always believed that there aren't any "Bad" foods, it's how much and how often you eat certain foods that can cause problems. Fat kids don't eat loads of junk food because they want to, it's because their parents can't be arsed to cook. If the credit crunch does come, we may see a reverse in obesity when parents can't afford to shove fatty take-aways down their kids throats. Until then, all the government should be doing is giving advice, nothing more nothing less.

Seems that diners in the Motor City are not smart enough to choose to eat in a restaurant that offers a non-smoking environment. It seems that employees in Grand Rapids cannot comprehend that they don’t have to work in a place that allows smoking. That has to be the case, that people in Michigan are just stupid and helpless. That’s why the state government feels it needs to tell businesses what they can and can’t do in their establishment: Smoking in Michigan workplaces, including bars and restaurants, would be banned under legislation passed by the Democratic-led state House. The vote is a victory for supporters, who have been pushing the measure for a decade. Isn’t smoking legal? I think it is, right? So why is it that so many governments think they have to ban it in so many places?

The author of "Nanny State" is saying that we are making life too safe for our children. How is that possible you ask? A couple of excellent examples are how schools in Colorado and Massachusetts have outlawed 'tag' and 'dodge ball' as being too harmful for the kids. What?! Well, I agree with David Harsanyi that it is really bad for our youth to protect them from every possible vector of harm. As is said in the video having children wear seatbelts in cars is reasonable but not allowing them to climb a tree is just over protective. ~RJH
